I have a problem with this

There was a quote from huskers extra from Shawn Watson

"It’s one of those games that it’s important to win on normal downs. We’ve got to do a great job on normal downs and stay in a manageable third-down situation.”

There was also a good thread about "multiple offenses" on the board, a good read if you can get through it.

What I am getting at is, this bs has to go by the wayside.

This is not an NFL team or league.

If I hear "manageable" or "manage" or "multiple" again, I think I'm going to puke.

I believe this is what Jason Peter meant when he said this offensive style breeds softness/weakness.

You go into a game to lay it all out on the field, and you go into it to win.

You do NOT go into games to just "manage" them..

This is the difference in mindset that he was talking about.

You go into games to win them and kick some ***

Maybe I am taking this nuance too far, but hopefully I have made my point.

you are a coach, little league, high school, college, whatever...

do you tell your quarterback:

A ) just go manage the game

or

B ) just go win the game

It's that simple of a mind shift that I'm talking about.

That's exactly what I thought when I read this. We need to come out and play to win! Not get "managable third downs". WTH. This sounds so Callahan-like.

What did Phil Jackson say to Kobe or MJ? What did Dungy say to Peyton, what did Lombardi say to Star? What did Osborne say to Frost?

"Just go out there and win it."

What did Pete Carrol say to Barkley? "Manage my offense, we don't need your big plays, just a manager"

...look where they are this season, worst season since Carrol's first year.

manageable third downs? how about never seeing third down because you are moving the ball so effectively. thats the offense we need.

 
If you have a problem with the word manageable then you would have a problem with the 95 Husker DVD set. T.O. says "manageable" quite a few times when referring to the offense in the coach speak after each game.

T.O.'s offenses did not manage games, especially during the '95 season. They flat out dominated them.

 
I know exactly what you are getting at, and it drives me nuts not to hear a more confident approach about how we are going to DICTATE the game....

HOWEVER....

If you think of what he said in the context of an interview he was giving after practice and what the question is, I think it actually is a pretty reasonable response...Look, we have a true freshman making his second start against the preseason #2 team in the country on national TV; some things in this game are simply NOT going to go like we want them. So I think it is reasonable to have our OC talk about what it takes to get into manageable, working situations on certain downs.

The simple fact is our offense stinks this year, and to win a game like this, we need to play great field position battles, not turn the ball over, and not get into obvious blitzing downs like 3 & 13, etc...

Personally, this particular answer this time doesn't bother me that bad. He has surely watched hours of film and knows what it will take on 1st and 2nd down to make us competitive on 3rd down and such.

My only point is going on a tirade about a coaches use of the word "manage" or "manageable" is borderline...well...insane.

Coaches say this word all the time. It's not like you would go out and say "Man if I hear the coach say the word "the" one more time I'm going to blow a gasket! We have no use for the word "the" in our program!"

But, I digress, because I understand your point OP. The offense is soft, average, and frustrating.

I think some of you are reading way too much into this. What should he say “We aren’t ever going to have a 3rd down because we are going to score on every play we run” or “There is no way that the defense will be able to handle our offense so we can go out and run whatever we want to because no matter what it is going to work”. People wouldn’t be blasting him for saying stuff like that either. <_<

How dare the coach talk about winning 1st and 2nd down and making 3rd downs manageable? At least he didn’t come out and say “We take what we want” because we all know that was a terrible thing to say as well. :ahhhhhhhh

 
dude, it wasn't so much about what the coach said, it's about attitude.

I think that is the point that might have been lost.

What you want is athletes out there being playmakers and not thinking too much.

Green said it best during his press conference. Analyze all the stuff during the week, then on game day, just go out and play and forget all that other stuff. Forget about being graded, forget about every little thing the coaches will pick apart. Just be an athlete and let your instincts take over.

I hope you understand the point of it all.

Finally, I'll add this... do you think Bo or Carl asks the defense to just "manage" the game? Imagine that, Bo saying, hey guys, just manage it...

If you don't understand the point, I can't help you anymore.
