Cody Green Never Will Start?

Here is the "writers" bio per the website:

I joined the bleacher creatures at the request of a friend and have found it to be very enjoyable. My writing skills still need a lot of work, but this a great place to learn. Its also a great place for passionate sports fans like me to let their opinions be heard! Thanks for the opportunity and I hope you enjoy my articles.

Figures.... I wonder if he crapped himself (or someother function, you know what I mean) when he realized that he has a 3 page thread on one of his topics.

I dont think that green is going to be very good I see him sitting the bench for many years to come but hey thats my opinion. I think that hes going to be one of those qbs that can run the ball well that cant throw the ball.. reminds me of jammal lord.. but jamal lord was a better runner and he isnt nearly sa fast as jammal was. Martinez is alot faster then green and I would start martinez over green any day also our option attack would be amazing with martinez, helu and rex

Well, again, we have to take Cody's 2009 season with a grain of salt. I continue to be the middle-man here: Cody was neither as good nor as bad as people are making him out to be. He did a decent job playing unexpectedly as a true Freshman, and with the disaster that was our O-Line, it is hard to expect the kid to have developed much from in-game experience.

I will wait and see what he does in game situations this year before making any kind of decision on him, I guess. TMart really impressed me in the Spring Game, but Cody didn't look to bad, either.
Agree with this. We tend to point out his poor throws (Like that sad out route in the Holiday bowl) but we need to give him some cred for the good plays he made, like the long run against FAU and the deep ball to Niles against Baylor. As a QB, I thought he was just as impressive as Martinez in the spring game.

As a sophomore, I'll give Cody the innocent until proven guilty treatment
cody does not seem to be able to make the touch throws, but his strength is throwing on the run. In fairness to him, NU keeps trying to make him a dropback passer, which he is not.
I don't know if Jow Ganz could make the touch throws as a true freshman either (although not a great example because it took Joe halfway through his RS junior season to get there). He needs some time to develop. Not everyone is going to get a top QB prospect out of a freshman as seems to be happening more around us lately

^ yep, and it's not like Cody wasn't a top QB either, out of HS. He was. It's just that we recruited a raw QB. Those of us who are drooling at the thought of just recruiting dual threat QBs, this is what we get if we do. Guys who come in raw and need development. That's why we recruit both styles of quarterback.

Of course Cody's not a great touch passer...I think we all knew that when he was coming in. Specifically, the coaches took him on as a project to develop his throwing. If Turner stays at the position, it'll be the same story. It's also the same story with Taylor Martinez.

That thought fires me up too!

Oh gawd.....is it Sept yet??

Green is still young, and will still develop more. Whether he starts or not, who knows. Anyone can make any prediction at this point and have a slim chance of looking like a genius, but a better chance of looking the fool. We are lucky in the fact that there is a lot of raw talent in our future when it comes to QB's. Hopefully they will be able to pick one that will stand out above the others, and take us somewhere with him.

Why doesn't anyone understand that we don't run an option offense? :ahhhhhhhh

I know what offense we run... we run a spread offense with a twist of west coast in it. I really wish that we could run the option though =(

Martinez is more elusive than Green, but not straight line faster. Green tied the record for the 10 yard dash at QB this past spring (Steve Taylor), ahead of Martinez. People keep saying Taylor is faster, but the truth is Cody has more straight line speed. Now I do think Martinez is more elusive do to Cody's long strides and upright running style, but if you line them up in a race, my $ would be on Cody.

I think Green's acceleration is underrated too. When we did get to see him run last year with some vertical space he hit top speed pretty quick.

if he is "straight line faster" its only for the first 10 yards because martinez runs a 4.48 and green runs a 4.6 40

And that is how we determine who is faster than whom. :)

Honestly I don't really care about straightline speed. If a player ever gets the opportunity to run for 4 seconds straight downfield, then he could run a 5.0 40 and still make a big play. It's the quarterback's job to create those opportunities for our McNeils and Pauls and Helus. As GMoose said - we do not run an option! And it's not like we just flip a switch and say "OK, let's become a power option offense." We don't have the personnel. We've run it a few times in recent years with Ganz, Lee, etc. And we saw how ugly it was.

As far as fitness tests go, Lee tested out as one of the most athletic players on the team last spring, so why some people seem to treat Lee as a stone-footed pocket passer next to Green and Martinez is beyond me. Lee makes Joe Ganz look like Zac Taylor, and none of us had any complaints about Ganz's speed. And Martinez makes Lee look like Sam Bradford, so...I'm sorry, I know you guys love you some Tay-mart, but if he ever starts at QB for us this year get ready for a lot of "He's just a freshman" excuses...

Ganz wasn't that bad on the run, in his limited run in 07 he averaged 4.7 YPC and had the teams second longest run of 28 yards and 3 total TD's. He didn't have a great YPC in 09 due to stats, but did get us 5 TD's. But he and Lee were not option QB's obviously.

The biggest point is personnel though, you could give us Tommie Frazier and LP\Green back and we still probably couldn't field an effective option attack with our line and WR's, thteam just isn't built for that.

Self reported Rivals times mean nothing compared to staff measured times after time in the strength program.

Well Im putting my bet on martinez but..I guess we will have to wait till we get some electronic times
