Early Commits from the state of Texas

NUance

Assistant Coach
Every year Mack Brown gathers up twenty or so commitments before the first day of spring ball. My question is: Does this hurt UT and help NU (and aTm, OU, TT, etc), when it comes to recruiting the state of Texas? I wonder if it actually works out to our advantage that we get to see many of our Texas hs recruits in summer camps and sometimes on the field their senior year before they commit? Meanwhile UT is basically signing their whole class based on their junior/soph year performances.

I think so, but perhaps not by as much as we might first imagine. You'll get a few kids every year that blow up in their senior season - but then you have to ask why it's taken until their senior season for that. Did they mature late? Did they put forth the effort for just the senior year in hopes of a scholarship (or a better one)? Was it a freak occurrance?

And I would imagine that those that do shine for just the senior year are not significantly better than the ones that gave an early committment to Texas. So, while I think that Texas' policy bites them at times, I don't think it's that often or that badly.

they tend to keep a few open through the season and can usually fit someone late if they decide to. overall though, i don't see it as a negative for UT at all. it is definitely a positive for NU though, as it gets most of the kids that would end up going to texas anyway out of our way so we can recruit what's left.

I’ve thought this for a while now——that UT shoots themselves in the foot by filling up their class so early. I wonder if it's starting to catch up with them this year. Perhaps that’s why UT pretty much sucks right now.

My thoughts exactly. It would be much worse for us if UT took the top 8 or 10 recruits early, then waited around to see how the rest panned out.

You're also leaving out the kids that have been riding the pine due to talent in front of them. Otherwise I totally agree.

This from the shaggybevo meltdown following Muschamp's departure to Florida:

Word around the campfire re: Boom, Major, mack, recruits, etc Here's what Im hearing:

Major was told that he'd be a "Co-Offensive Coordinator", but that he would not be calling the plays. This pissed him off, and rightfully so, and he accepted Muschamp's offer to come to Florida. However, within about an hour, after cooling off, he decided that he didn't want to burn all of his bridges here at UT, and he is probably gonna stick around, and have much more influence on the offense. Another thing that ticked off Major and Boom was that Mack told them he was not going to make the recruiting changes they wanted. They wanted top offering so many juniors so early, and they also wanted to stop telling guys that if they commit that we'd stop recruiting their position. Mack said no to those ideas.

These things made it a no brainer for Muschamp when Florida came calling. I've also been told that Muschamp talked to the recruits, especially the defensive recruits, and told them to stay committed to Texas, that they made the right choice. He said that going to Florida was like going home for him, as he spent around a decade living there as a child, and that there's nowhere else he'd leave Texas for. he told them that they'd be in good hands at Texas.

Also hearing that yes, Randy Shannon will be announced as the new DC shortly, which will help keep the recruits. Akina is also expected to stick around. Basically, the things I'm hearing make me feel much more optimistic than what I was hearing last night, although there's still a lot of damage control that needs to be done, and a lot of changes that need to be made asap. So for now, that's the word. LINK
I wonder if Muschamp will be able to maintain his Texas recruiting pipeline from gator central. And I wonder how much his departure will hurt the Whorns recruiting.

With the Florida talent pool, will he need to?

You wouldn't think so. But Whorns fans are all up in arms over it. Shoot, they're all up in arms over everything. Their little Whorn world just imploded.

This stategy to recruit early can work but telling kids they won't recruit for that position is a big mistake. If Malcolm Brown wants to jump ship, NU will take both. When you recruit that early you really miss the breakout stars from this year. Kids that may or may not be on the recruiting radar just yet. Plus, if those recruits get hurt, you are stuck with a recruit that may not be as good as pre-injury.
