Big Ten Blackshirts

This isn't a debate on NC games but a discussion on NU having one of the top defenses in the Big Ten this upcoming season. I believe they'll be at the top however we won't know for sure until the games are played and were we all stand at this point next year. Right now is pure speculation seeing as how most of these teams haven't played each other in years or even at all. NU's defense is going to have to adapt to a whole different brand of football this year and we'll see how things shake up after the first 3 conference games are over with and we can truly assess how good this defense is in this conference
Do you guys play with a round ball instead? Is the field longer/shorter? Can you not use the forward pass? 12 men on the field for each team? The only brand that is changing is the Big10 brand...logo and all. Football is football.
Round ball? Like shooty hoops? No no no don't be silly, we still use the pigskin but it's still squeals when you carry it. Of course can use the forward pass! You just have to explain it to the other team first since they may not be sure why it's flying above their heads.

Yes football is football but I guess I should have said style instead of brand but we all know that the Big Ten gets poked fun at for being more of a power running conference which isn't exactly unfounded. If your defense is really the top defense in the Big Ten in just it's first year of going through the new opponents then I'll be quite surprised but on paper then absolutely I put them in the top 2-3 spots and IMO those are quite interchangable
You tell us we have the #1 defense coming in, and we will tell you we have the #10 offense coming in as well. Deal? ;)

touche' hahahaha

Just to add to coqui, we have our mantra that Ohio State doesn't rebuild, we reload.
Yeah, whatever. We were saying that a decade ago. Except we reloaded and captured a couple more MNCs. Not just top-10 finishes.
Which BCS game did you win the national championship in again? I forgot.
And I suppose you’re going to brag about tOSU’s only BCS title win? The 2002 MNC where the refs gave you the game on that bogus pass interference play? Ha ha! What a joke. I absolutely hate Miami. But even I had to admit they got jobbed in that game.

As for your other so-called national championships, the list has some HIGHLY suspect entries. Like 1970. tOSU fans claim a national title that year, and yet you lost the Rose Bowl. Please explain to me how that works. You lose your bowl game and yet win the MNC?? Face it. The last legit title you won was in 1968. So really--except for the 2002 MNC handed to you by the refs or 1970 where you lost the bowl but won the MNC--tOSU hasn’t done much in about half a century.
He started the trash talking. I was just mentioning, if he was going to trash talk, he should at least be remotely accurate, because a decade ago, we were already in the BCS era.

And you're right. It wasn't passing interference. It was defensive holding or illegal hands to the face. End result? Exact same result as a PI penalty. Either way, how convenient you neglect to remember the obvious passing interference that wasn't called that even allowed Miami to go into overtime to begin with.
And a blown out of bounds call on Michael Jenkins who was clearly in the field of play that lead to the end of regulation. Get it right and the game ends and tOSU wins.

Not to mention that Miami had 4 cracks at getting it into the endzone in the 2nd overtime and failed each time.

Okay, enough MNC smack. I was just joshin ya. All your championship trophies are well deserved. (:rolleyes) Let’s talk about tOSU “reloading.” You had a great defense this year. This PAST year. But you lose a lot of that talent to graduation. Or at least you lose guys because their eligibility is done. I don’t know how many will actually get a sheepskin from tOSU.

tOSU's DL will be about the same. You lose a guy, an All Big 10 DT, but got 3/4 back for another year. OTOH, you guys are going to miss a lot of DBs and LBs next year from this past squad. You lose two LBs, both CBs and a pair of safeties, right? Of these, four were All Big 10. (You had 5 All B10 defensive players.)

LB: tOSU had one of the best LB corps in the nation this year. Sweat is back for another yr. But you lose Homan and Rolle—both All Big 10—to be replaced by Klein and Bell. Bell will be the better of the two. Eventually. But he’s a soph wi hardly any game experience. Klein is okay, he saw some PT this year, but he is no Homan. And never will be.

CB: You lose All Big 10 CB Chimichanga and Devin Torrance. In comes Corey Brown and Travis Howard. Both nice sized. Both blazing fast. But neither wi much game experience. I’d be a bit worried starting two new CBs. There will be a break-in period.

FS: You lose Jermale Hines, the other All Big 10 defensive player. His replacement, Jamie Wood, is another guy who will be great. Someday. But again, he’s gonna be a new starter this year.

I just don’t think you can say tOSU is gonna be great because they’ve always been great in the past. I’m betting the Buckies will be good, probably in the top three or four of the Big 10. Maybe even the top two. But you lose so much talent this year there’s just no way you dominate again like you did last season. /jmho

Anyone have the offensive ranks of the Big 10 in comparison to the offensive ranks of the teams our defense has played the last few years?

I'd be curious to see how comparable they are/who's SOS was higher.

I'm going to take Nebraska's defense out of bias, simply because Nebraska is known for it. College football fans talk about Nebraska's defense with reverence. Not about Ohio State's.

Our DL was deep this past year (not as deep as the year before). We were able to rotate between players without any dropoff. Most of the backups were not seniors.

LB, We lose a lot of proven ability there, but we also get Tyler Moeller (ballhawk and leading tackler in the team) back from season ending injury.

Secondary, you do realize we had basically all our starters out to injuries for more than 5 games right? We will also have CJ Barnett back and prior to his injury, he was almost equal to chimichanga (as you put it lol)

The time that all the people who will be here had to start adjusting? The Wisconsin game. After that, adjustments were made. The line itself which as you mentioned, only loses one player out of the 10 in rotation, can compensate for a lackluster secondary. This was proven against Arkansas.

I'm still far from convinced our defense will be the top unit in the Big10. Ohio State lost 9 starters, so I'll say we probably top them. But they still were the #3 scoring defense last year, they won't fall too far. Cassidy != Gomes/Hagg, Evans != Amukamara. The question is will Crick, Stein, Meredith, and David be "that" much better to compesate for the losses. Our line should be extremely dominant next year - I am hopefully it's enough to make up for our losses in the secondary. Only time will tell.
2010 - Ohio State ranked 5th in scoring defense

2009 - Ohio State ranked 5th in scoring defense

2008 - Ohio State ranked 6th in scoring defense

2007 - Ohio State ranked 1st in scoring defense (This was the season we lost a large amount of people on defense)

2006 - Ohio State ranked 5th in scoring defense

2005 - Ohio State ranked 5th in scoring defense

Yes there's a dropoff when you lose people, but the good defensive teams pick up right where they left off after a couple of games. Also a lot of our backups received playtime this season due to injuries.
Just to add to coqui, we have our mantra that Ohio State doesn't rebuild, we reload.
you mean 'we don't rebuild, we get more free tattoos.'
There it is.

The only problem with comparing offensive ranks, is you have to take defensive ranks into the equation as well. Almost every year in the BCS era, there have been 3 Big 10 teams in the Top 10 of offensive scoring. Expand that out to Top 20, and you almost always double that amount. (accounting for half the conference itself) Likewise, offensive production can also be skewed. Was the offense that bad or was the defense that good? Was the defense that bad, or was the offense that good? That's what makes stats hard to base these off of. There's enough factors that you can make them do whatever you want them to do.

Regarding history of SOS, I honestly don't know where I could find that.

People don't talk about Ohio State's defense? The Silver Bullets? The Real Lineback U? Just because you haven't heard these phrases doesn't mean others haven't. Ohio State is known for its defense and special teams. So when either of these fail, it's a shock to the people calling the game.

Does OSU actually claim the 1970 MNC? I thought that was more of a "thanks for the honor but no thanks" kind of thing. Kind of how some lists have Nebraska with 11 "national championships" but we only claim five of them, because the other six have no foundation in reality.

If so, it would make a great trivia question: What college football team was so awesome that they won the national championship despite losing their bowl game?

Texas also claims a national title in 1970, even though they lost their bowl game. The only unbeaten, untied team to claim a MNC in 1970 is....

Anyone know? Anyone?

Alabama :D

I'm not going to get into the OSU/NU defensive debate, BUT if you're going to compare the two over the past two years, you have to take into account how terrible of an offense NU had. OSU had an offense that sustained drives and didn't continuously hand the opposing offense tremendous field position. Just sayin.
