What's Simple About It?

Perhaps I was reading a different article than you guys. Here's the article I read:

  • The article says Callahan’s offense was overly complex. Even shows a pic of Bill Callahan on the sidelines (which is odd, this being an article about Beck).
  • When Watson took over as the O.C. the offense got simplified from Callahan's offense, but was still a West Coast offense. Beck is running the same thing.
  • By contrast, T.O. only had about 15 or 16 formations in his playbook. And iconic BYU Coach Lavell Edwards called plays using no more than two words.
  • Beck's version of the offense this year probably won't look a lot different than last year, other than being faster to the line and getting the snap off sooner.

So, where's the sunshine? Like I said earlier, we haven't even reached the spring game and this jacka$$ Ryan is already starting in. I say maybe we should give Beck a season or so to see how his offense is working out. Or at least wait until mid-October before we start picking him apart. But I guess that's just me.
Either you're a massive troll, or you are f'ing clueless.
I hope we can meet face to face someday. So we can discuss this.

Cool story.

There really isn't any sunshine. I don't think we're really going know how much retooling this is going to need until we play Wisconsin. UT-Chattanooga or Wyoming isn't going to provide any decisive conclusions to whether this has a chance, or it's gonna fall on its a$$. I know it's still going to be a learning process the first season, especially from game to game, but until we meet, "competition", we're not going to know what it's going to look like.

We can all speculate until the cows come home, and thats fine. All thats going to do is cause the internet tough guys to say how wrong each other are.

Heh, it's understandable though. We're all dying a horrible death to see what Beck's cooking. Patience my a$$....

I got was that with Callahan, came an overly complex offense with lots and lots of long winded names. Also came every off season the talk of "simplifying" the offense. So this is just one writer guessing what "simplifying" might mean in regards to Beck. Not inherently bad or good.

I know exactly what you mean, it's over 5 months, and we're all going a bit stir crazy
Hopefully a bit less. We're going to see some of this new offense in the Spring Game. They're not going to practice this stuff for weeks, then trot out last year's offense. They'll do what Callahan did - first play of Spring, 2004, he had about five guys go in motion. The crowd went crazy because everyone had been bitching that Solich didn't pass enough, and the Callahan Era was off on a nice honeymoon......

----which promptly ended at Waco. But hopefully we don't have a game like that this year.

Save it for the Iowa fans, you guys. Don't let the offseason get you down!
I just dont' appreciate people trashing others that they know nothing about, especially making sh#t up that isn't true. Steve's a good guy, and works his butt off. Dude bleeds husker red.

I know we are all feeling a little bit of anxiety about the offense...what it might be or what it might not be. Take solace in this fact....it can't be any worse than what Watson dreamed up, which was painful to watch in every respect. And I take it on faith that the new offense will be one that jives more with Husker traditions pre-Cally. I am perfectly OK with both of those concepts. And those are enough to keep me sane as we wait to see what Mr. Beck has in store. GBR!

It’s fine and nice that you’re a pal of the guy. But when I read the article it seems like he is starting in on Beck’s offense before Beck has even shown us anything. Did I miss something in my post above, explaining my position? And so what if I don’t like what some hack writer has to say, and I criticize the writer. Does that make me a troll? Is that what a troll is—the guy who sticks up for our new OC who has been on the job for all of one month? You’ll have to explain this to me. Due to me being f’ing clueless and all.

especially making sh#t up that isn't true.
What is it in my post above, explaining my position, that is untrue?

Well, considering that not one other person that has read that story is seeing what you are, I think the problem is you. In no way is he criticizing Beck's offense, and that's where you are making sh#t up. It's quite simple to understand. Everyone is expecting a completely different offense, but in his opinion, it's going to look more familiar than different, i.e. similar formations and plays. We aren't coming out in the flexbone. The difference lies in how the offense is taught, the terminology used, and the ability to audible and use option routes.

One thing Bill Callahan took issue with was the assumption that this huge playbook of his was what he went into every game with. It wasn't. What that eight-pound juggernaut was, was his playbook. It was all his stuff. Out of film review of the upcoming opponent, they found the stuff that they felt would work the best. So, maybe eight pounds becomes four pounds. Heck, maybe it's a pound and a half. But it wasn't the entire thing.
However, the players still had to know the whole thing.

I would guess the "whole thing" is what will get chopped, hacked and diced to the point that even if you feel you have to have the entire playbook out there for the week of practice as you prepare for the next opponent, it's not going to be something the players will find overwhelming. It's not so simple that everyone will be able to figure it out with just a couple of game films to review. But it's not so complex that you have to go away from what you normally do in order for college kids to get it one week to the next.
You call steve a Husker Hater and a douchebag. Based on what? Your inability to read? He's stated that he thinks Beck will do well as an OC. I'm not a friend of steve, but I visit and post on scout quite often. He does a good job. Your nonsensical accusations make as much sense as accusing Sean Callahan of being a husker hater.

I'm not trying to start anything here or get in the middle of anything, but I would like to say one thing:

A beat writer's job is not to be a sunshine pumper or even a fan, it's to write articles about the state of the program and get people to read it. Personally I didn't take it as him attacking Beck, but even if he did that's not trolling, it's called journalism. He based everything on fact and observation, and when he was predicting he made it clear that's all it was - his prediction. Calling a guy a d-bag for writing an article that you didn't like is closer to trolling than Steve Ryan was.

saunders45/Nuance;

Easy there my friends. Your "both" posters that have good and intelligent things to say on a consistent basis. We're all just a little edgy with forever to wait until we see what happens with our offense.

You can bet the ranch you'll both gladly buy each aother a cold one when the BigRedMachine starts steamrolling the Big10. We're on the same side....hang in there!
