Corey Raymond changing too much?

Sanders was a very good coach. He improved our technique greatly when he got here and coached up several players. Who ever said he wasn't a good technician is way off base. He just stressed a different type of play. And he was also a good recruiter. He had a very strong organizational back ground and was very very skilled at film breakdown.
I think all this rhetoric about Raymond being different, in the sense that he is a technician, does a lot of disservice to Sanders, then.

I guess Sanders didn't really hit the road much, but nonetheless played a big part in identifying recruits, if that's what you are saying.

Both former coaches were very good coaches.
This is what I was referring to, huzkerbob. Not sure Gilmore had a very good record here.
Who said Sanders didn't travel? That would be very incorrect.

And looking at only Gilmore's time at Nebraska to determine his ability to coach would be like looking at Sanders experience when he was at North Carolina.

Take a body of work as a whole. I'm not saying Ted was the best ever but he has had a good track record. You realize he coached the NCAA all time receptions leader and the Big 10 all time receptions leader throughout his career. He was actually thought of well enough as a recruiting coordinator he was promoted by Bo to Assistant Head Coach. He also could have stayed at NU but that's neither here nor there. For the style of offense that was being run his teachings and focus were exactly what they were supposed to be if you wanted to be successful in it. The WCO is a pro offense designed to "plug" players in to exact routes, with exact timing and that's what he was told to teach. Watson wanted those receiving elements in the offense last year even though he was trying to take it toward a spread option offense. They don't mesh well together
It seemed to me that Gilmore was reticent to put his best athletes on the field because either they weren't the best tacticians or best blockers and unlike with Sanders, Bo wasn't going to mess with personnel decisions in that position as it isn't his area of expertise. Obviously Watson wasn't as strong as Bo in identifying these types of weaknesses.

Regarding Sanders, I personally think his recruiting results were overall decent. That being said, he wasn't the strongest results getter. He did go get Cooper, which was a big win. However it seemed he wasn't near as active as others such as Beck and Papuchis in hitting the trail so to speak. If he was putting in full effort, he was really good in getting through to the kids. I am just not convinced he was always as focused as he should have been in this regard, which is why his performance from class to class was mixed.

I would agree to an extent Cave, the thing with Sanders that you have to understand is that he went into some tough areas. That Chicago area is getting easier to recruit from now though. But you bet Marvin would be in on Valentine if he were still here.

Overall, Sanders really did have a gift for recruiting. On the surface I would agree that it did not appear he used it as much as he should have.

Sanders was probably as lazy a recruiter as you could imagine. There was a recruit here and there that you could see him get inspired about, and you could see the results. Will not deny in the least he was a great recruiter, but he was only great when he wasn't lazy, and that was not very often.

Personally, I'd rather have Garrison in Illinois recruiting than I would Marvin. Garrison may have a bit harder time getting 'in' with players, that guy has shown to be relentless as a recruiter early on. Hope he doesn't turn into another Ekeler and just completely fade off in his recruiting.

BigWillie, what is the main reason these guys burn out? I understand the travel is boring but the $$ and prestige of coaching big time cfb would compensate I would think.

I think things change when it's actually your job.

Marvin never burned out, because he hated recruiting even in his early days. If he weren't such a fine position coach, no one would even have wasted their time with him.

With Ekeler, I wish I knew. I know I've heard stuff about him being unhappy due to Bo riding him hard in his time here, but I would hope that wasn't the reason he backed off the effort he displayed early. Besides Will Compton and Cody Green, Ekeler may as well have been invisible himself these last few years.

Heh, well that makes sense too. Thank you sir!

Ekler was headed down a slippery slope and thus we scaled back his recruiting so it could be monitored better. We didn't need NCAA sanctions against us. I'm sure he didn't like having a thumb on him all the time. I would guess he'll have to self report minor violations in the next 3 years if they leave him uncheck at Indy becuase he's too sloppy.

If there is any level of burnout from these coaches, I'd bet it has a lot to do with the phrase you hear about women: No matter how hot you think she is, someone somewhere is sick of putting up with her BS. This also boils down to "Familiarity breeds contempt."

While I agree with bshirt that this sounds like a fun job to most football fans, at some point some of these guys get so used to it, the magic wears off and something else sets in, whether that's complacency, boredom, whatever.

Being a coach takes away from your family as it is, being a recruiter does it even more. Missing your kids events will take a toll on you no matter what you are getting paid.

It's so good to have a coaching staff that pays attention to this sort of thing, you know?
