Early expectations for this year.

:bigredn: ebraska close? Ya, I think so. Sadly, I've seen many talented teams in many sports over the years that just never seem to jump the hurdle of fixing the mistakes, penalties, drops, fumbles ... etc. For whatever ever reason ... being discipline or just bad luck ... we have not crossed the bridge to get that done ... making us an average to good team at best.

Mistakes are a part of football. Throwing accurate passes, making blocks, holding on to the football, carrying out your assignments, everything that we failed at last year is a football skill. It isn't "We're a great great team that just makes mistakes" because that statement is an oxymoron. Great teams do not make mistakes. We were decent to good last year. We were not anywhere close to great. Sorry. Maybe we'll fix some of those problems this year.

Part of being grounded in reality is having a rough familiarity with basic math.
Edit: Maybe this is why saunders45 is convinced that Nebraska is so close . . . because he doesn't clearly remember the last season.

Nebraska has great chance at making the conference title game this year. I think it's a race between Michigan and Nebraska. Michigan State squeaked out a few close victories last year. By losing virtually their entire offense, they'll be on the other side of those close games. There's a strong possibility Michigan will start their season 2-2. If that happens, can they keep their composure or will they begin to crumble? It's hard to take anyone else in the division seriously.

We made team-wide mistakes on both sides of the ball in those games, didn't make the necessary mental or strategic adjustments at halftime, and in the case of South Carolina, came out and played much worse. Northwestern simply looked like a better team than Nebraska. They outplayed and outcoached us at home. With the Big 10 Division still in play.
Not wanting it is a pretty big concern, as "wanting it" is the glue that often turns a bunch of lower tier recruits into giant killers. Mistakes in big games are no longer just mistakes, they reflect on how well the coaches have prepared the team.
Bo needs to figure out his chemistry, and some players need to step up as leaders. Martinez is the most obvious. I don't think it's his style to be vocal, but if his performance shows confidence I think good things will follow. The defense needs a couple arm flailing madmen to jack it up.

Last year was a small class, and ended on a down note (Peat). We got some good athlete's, and if we had landed Peat, it would have been a great (#15 or so) class.

Tom Dienhart from BTN ranks Nebraska's secondary third in the Big Ten.
He has our Linebackers seventh in the Big Ten.
Finally, our front four are fourth in the Big Ten.
He has Ohio State ranked ahead of us in all three categories.

Nebraska's ranked higher than both of them for secondary and defensive line. Lower than them at linebacker.
Sounds about right. I don't understand why you'd possibly think Michigan's defensive line will be better than Nebraska's. Pretty big leap of faith to deduce that.
