Week 1 Coverage Map

Is this the same Southern Miss team who lost to Marshall and UAB last year? Yeah, they're going to get their teeth kicked it.
By the team that lost to Northwestern last year?
Pretty sure that Northwestern was better than Marshall and UAB.

And we were better than Northwestern. Didn't stop us from losing to them, did it?

;P

I do say. All these predictions of an easy win, in the face of the way this team played last year, make no sense.

BTW, Southern Miss ended last season ranked 20th. Northwestern was unranked. Nebraska was 24th.

They played in CUSA ....

Southern Miss lost a 4 year starter at QB, a boatload on defense (4 returning starters?), has a whole new coaching staff, a guy in his first head coaching gig ever. Whoever they trot out at QB will be taking their first live snap, ever. Only the true frosh QB is considered a running threat.

If they score more than 17, I'll be sorely disappointed. If we don't win by 3+ scores, we should pack it in, because it's going to be a loooong season.

Agreed, saunders. All of that is true. But, this is still the same Nebraska team. There's no rational way to predict an easy victory.

I certainly won't be surprised by 35-10, but I wouldn't bet money on it. I wouldn't be your money on it.

True, hopefully we get over the mental hump this year.

Except for the fact that we have a much better team.

thread title is a bit confusing considering the conversation....... Anyways, all I can say about predictions and comparisons to recent history and comparisons to any of our opponents and how we did last year against some of them, is that it's ok to believe! Believe we have busted a$$ in the off season to become more cohesive. Believe that Taylor may not have developed Dan Marion's release in the summer, but the fact that he was willing to work on it so it's serviceable and on his own dime no less, is all we can ask for from our starting QB.... Effort and sacrifice shows me that he cares a great deal.
Believe that even with the loss of some stars on defense, as a unit we can be better because maybe we weren't a good fit personnel wise last year!

Believe that someone like Rex Burkheads actions on and off the field are infectious! If everyone approaches their craft like Rex, even if the results aren't quite the same, this team will be fine!

Believe that Bo is getting closer! We need to remember that this is only year 5 as HC for Bo..............ever! And to take over THIS program when he did with no HCing experience and change as much as he needed to while learning how to be THE guy, was damn near impossible.

Believe that maybe this year we can have a few breaks go our way! Nobody can put a price tag on a little luck! Couple that with a relatively injury free season, we could do great things!

In summation, I'm drunk! Koolaid gone! I drank it all! Doesn't mean I'm not realistic about this team. But the start of a new season is suppose to be the time when we fans believe that our beloved team can do what we all hope they will do! Win a championship! GBR!! :thumbs

There's no rational way to predict an easy victory.

2009 Iowa State

2010 Texas

2011 Northwestern
You'll never be able to predict the outcome of a game with 100% accuracy, but predicting that the better team will win is the only rational thing to do. Of course there will be surprise upsets, but saying we SHOULD win because we have the better team is a completely legitimate prediction.

And we SHOULD win this game by 3 scores at least, yes.

That's not a good reason to stop making realistic predictions.

2008 Western Michigan, San Jose State, New Mexico State, Iowa State, Kansas State

2009 Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State, Louisiana Lafayette, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona

2010 Western Kentucky, Idaho, Washington, Missouri, Kansas

So on and so forth. Almost every team struggles with inferior opponents almost every year. The types of games you bring up are, in fact, few and far between.

This Southern Miss team is likely better than any team listed from 2008, any team listed from 2009, and Western Kentucky and Idaho from 2010. Thus, the prediction of a blowout becomes less realistic.
