  1. This year is a pretty good indication of just how bad a coach Doc Sadler was. It's absolutely amazing that Tom extended that moron.

For any coach in any situation you either extend them or fire them. Coaches very rarely run to the end of a contract, it would hamper recruiting too much.

And he should have fired him.

  2. come on Gumbo, Its very noticeable that the cupboard was pretty bare when Erstad took over. Don't start the Bad coach thing again... This team will get better next year and the year after as well as Erstad will improve as a recruiter and an all around head coach.

We're ranked 7th, in one of the worst conferences in the country. We played in front of 300 people today, and lost twice. Yeah, we don't have a TON of talent. You can't tell me our talent level is THIS bad. Like I said, Erstad needs to make significant improvements next year. We lost A LOT of games we had no business losing.

  3. what a crock... seems like this team had it going fairly well for the first half of the season... now just crumbling. tired? fatigued? or the bottom line is we just lack much talent.

Or our head coach isn't very good. This team just tends to not show up at times. That's on the head coach. In fact, we've lost an amazing amount of games we had no business losing this season. At the beginning of the year, all the way through to now. Darin better right this ship next year, because people are going to stop caring altogether.

  4. Well....wow, as completely unconvinced I am of MIles being "the one" him turning us down would be incredibly embarassing.

    From the Journal Star "

Tim Miles, the men's basketball coach at Colorado State, flew back home from Lincoln on Friday, and told The Coloradoan he plans to speak with CSU administrators about an offer from Nebraska

Could he just be using us as a way to get a raise?

  5. I do like this hire alot, he is very media saavy and has been loved by every community he has coached in. Good job TO.

Hooray! Media saavy! That will win us a ton of games!!!!

Would you rather have some douche bag sit in front of the press and piss them off, and not be liked by everyone? Media can make or break a coach, its the sad truth. Why don't you settle down and realize we are not going to get a "big name" coach.

I'd rather hire someone who has good enough credentials that "media saavy" isn't one of the best things you can say about him. Doc Sadler was LOVED by the media. It didn't help us in the least.

  6. Some twitter chatter today saying Illinois is in hot pursuit of Brad Stevens and that there might be a chance.

Sigh. I knew we were on a different level than Illinois before......but they're going to get a guy who has back to back final four appearances to his name. We're getting a guy who's never won a conference tournament.

Illinois also made a National Championship apperance a couple of years ago, is in a basketball recruiting hot bed, and has more tradition than our basketball program. We are not going to get a coach like Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, or anyone like that right now. We have to accept that our basketball program is some kind of a joke on the national scene. But it doesn't have to be that way, a guy like Tim Miles can help turn us around. He has won at every program he has been at, give him a chance.

Like I said, I knew we weren't on Illinois' level, it's just depressing to be reminded of it. I'll give Miles every chance, doesn't mean I'm going to get excited and pretend like this is "of course" the best hire simply because Tom made it. Tom's decisions when it comes to hiring people has left me skeptical in general, I was hoping he could turn that around with this one. Instead he underlined it. I'll be rooting for Miles. I'll be happier if this stud recruiting assistant can be "persuaded" to come.

  7. If the Groce thing is true, then the Nebraska basketball program is in a truly awful state. MAC coaches are turning us down? REALLY? This athletic department needs a change in leadership and wholesale changes in staffing in the worst way.

Miles is a nice story...this year, but if you look at his career in whole, he's the Doc Sadler of Colorado Springs. He basically got this job, because the NCAA Tournament selection committee decided a 3rd MWC team was a slightly better choice than a 2nd Pac-12 school

And as for "if they don't want to come here, then they just don't have vision" guy? I suppose you also thought every girl who turned you down for a date was a lesbian. The fact of the matter is, it is incredibly concerning that a dude who had enough vision to build a winner at Ohio has zero interest in this school. It's incredibly concerning that so many high caliber coaches have no interest in us at all. It's BEYOND concerning that this dude's assistant isn't even all that excited about Nebraska.

So does that equate to an equally poor state of the Illinois program when a CAA coach is turning them down?

Not if their second choice is a dude who was in the National Championship game last year.

  10. I guess the thing I don't get about this particular search is the need to find someone who has ties to Nebraska. It's not like Nebraska is like some former great that has fallen on hard times. We've been bad FOREVER. What exactly would be so wrong about getting someone who has no ties to that? I mean, it was hysterical to read the writeup in the paper on Jeter and go "ok at least there isn't some obvious Nebraska tie that is a reason he's in the mix" and then read on to see that his uncle played football here. This isn't six degrees of Kevin Bacon. We can hire a dude who's oblivious to how bad we've been and still have success.

  11. Well, it's nice to pound a team we're supposed to pound. Here's hoping the split (and a run away from taking 3 of 4) of the 18th ranked team in the country has given this team some confidence and swagger. We're what? 5-2 on the homestand now? I think I predicted 12-5 overall so it's looking like that's still possible.
