The point isn't that Nebraska is on the level of Alabama or Ohio State right now; we're not, and haven't been for many years. But wins and losses are the truest measure of any program's worth, and in that department, it's pretty clear that Iowa doesn't measure up to Nebraska-- now or ever. They'd be better off trying to prove their program's worth to Northwestern and Iowa State fans, not Husker fans.

  2.

They make fun of us for being mediocre since our dynasty run, then ritually celebrate a realistically mediocre season ever 4-5 years amidst not good seasons.

You can't make this stuff up, they are kinda like KSux fans.

I know people occasionally accuse me of being an Iowa homer on this board, which I most assuredly am not, but the only reason I get those accusations is because people aren't fair or rational in their assessments of Iowa's programs.

    Since 2001...

    Number of 11+ win seasons:

    Iowa - 3

    Nebraska - 0

    Number of top 10 finishes:

    Iowa - 4

    Nebraska - 0

Number of conference championships (yes, we are all aware that these were obtained differently than the Big XII):

    Iowa - 2

    Nebraska - 0

    Number of major bowl appearances:

    Iowa - 3

    Nebraska - 0

Their program operates quite differently than ours in the sense of having common 4-7 win seasons, but also has seasons sprinkled in that are better than anything we've accomplished in 15 years.

And we still have a better overall record than them during that same time span. But congratulations to Iowa: in their best ever era and our mediocrity since the dynasty years, they've managed to "almost" win as often as us. Quite an accomplishment for a program whose "tradition" is primarily based on moral victories and never winning anything at all of significance.

We can talk about the past, and Nebraska would win that discussion handily. We can talk about the present, and even if they manage to beat our 2nd or 3rd string quarterback tomorrow or our gimpy starter, they'll still have an awe inspiring (for them) 8 wins...which is only 1 win less than Nebraska (with a loss at home to an FCS team to boot). Past or present, Iowa football is inferior.

Little brother Iowa: always trying to compare themselves to the big boys, and always coming up just short. I'd talk about how their stirring Orange Bowl victory over Georgia Tech 7 years ago (the only major bowl win they've had in about 50 years) was the stuff of legends, but I wouldn't want to live in the past like their fans clearly do. :P

  3. I don't know if it can be narrowed down to either/or (scheme or players). What I do know is that this is the worst defense I have EVER seen at Nebraska, if not all of Division 1 .

The only reason we're not giving up 70 yet is because Purdue doesn't throw the ball as often as Texas Tech. The fact that the Boilers are nowhere near as talented as Tech is completely irrelevant.

  4. Mich St: 52

    Neb: 17

Thorson is not a good QB. At all. He may very well be the worst Northwestern quarterback since Gary Barnett first took over that program. And we just made him look like Randall Cunningham.

It's hard to decide if it's more scary or depressing to think about what Michigan State's offense will do to this team.

  5. The wide receivers were dropping balls today like they'd greased their hands with Crisco before the game. The o-line and secondary are far, far bigger problems, and there is no quick fix in sight.

If nothing else, Tommy played with heart--can we honestly say the same for the rest of the team?

  6. Just watch: Iowa will find a way to blow a game they shouldn't before heading to Lincoln. I'm guessing the Indiana game on the road. They already have significant injuries, including their best defensive player (Drew Ott) for the rest of the season.

Still, their coaching staff fairly deserves a lot of credit. This is not a particularly talented Iowa team, but they are well coached and fundamentally sound--things that had taken a holiday in Iowa's program since their Orange Bowl run a few years back. Wasn't it Phil Steele who said that this was the least talented Hawkeye team in all of Kirk Ferentz's years at the helm?

Their fans are thoroughly obnoxious, but you have to tip your hat to the work being done by a head coach that many had left for dead (including me).

  7. I really hate this defeatist crap. Can't we support the current coaching regime (and I do) without deciding that Nebraska fans should be grateful for Sun Bowl berths in the modern era?

Michigan relies heavily on other states for its recruiting. It has another major power (MSU) not only within its own state borders, but within its own conference. It loses in-state "diamonds in the rough" to Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Eastern Michigan all the time. If Michigan can rise from the ashes, Nebraska will be fine (just not this year).

  8. We all know that Nebraska hasn't been "Nebraska" for awhile now. But at least we've always been able to say that our program still wins 9 games every year, goes to bowl games, has the sellout streak, etc. We've been able to tread water while waiting for things to turn around.

    Well, they've turned around, alright.

I wasn't a fan of Bo's antics at ALL--just the fact that someone like Kaz could become a solid fixture on his staff speaks volumes about that regime. But even in the transitional first year of a coaching regime, THIS level of play is completely inexcusable. They aren't being outmatched--they're continually failing to make the kind of adjustments and play calls that win tight games. That's what is most disheartening.

  9. We could put some turnstiles in the secondary, and they'd be at least as effective as what we have back there right now. They can't stop...ANYBODY. Stave is the worst Wisconsin QB since...well, EVER, and there was NO chance he wasn't going to lead that team right down the field into FG range with 1 minute left to play. PATHETIC!
