  1. After the spring game ZD was the QB I was most excited about. Looked poised in the pocket and made smart decisions. Granted he was going against the C team Defense, but looked like a real quarterback. One would think if there were concussion issues he would already be on a med hard ship scholly. Therefore, I believe he is fair game and wouldn't be surprised if he bridges the gap between TA and POB and does a great job.

My patience with Riley is going to be (unfairly) short unfortunately.

I don't think this is unfair. That's why I'll give him two seasons to win me over. Not that my opinion really matters, LOL!
Just curious what its going to take for Riley to "win you over".

I am already impressed with his professionalism, and I like the staff he brought in, but I really want a championship. Somebody else said this earlier in the thread.....If we win all of the games we should, maybe upset a team we aren't supposed to beat, play tough sound football in our losses and not get blown out, that would be a great start to me. BUT......ultimately I need a conference championship in 2-3 years to be "won over".

Given our unlimited resources, weeker division, rich history, I believe that's doable.

Bo seemed on the cusp, but couldn't get over the hump.

It seems a lot of people on here are quick to choose a side. I think most people are optimistic and already have jumped on his bandwagon, but there are a few who seem to think it was a bad hire and don't think MR will succeed.

Where do you stand? How many seasons does he get?

I am cautious. I am still in a wait and see approach.

I definitely like the culture he is building as well as his staff.

Ultimately though, he better compete for a conference title within 2 years. Just my humble opinion.

    What say you?

First of all, you quit bashing the new coach...give him some time.

My question would be, if he has great success yet due to his age, how long would he stick around to try and keep winning? Similarly, if he can't move is forward w/in the first 2-3 yrs would he decide to hang it up, citing age/family/fatigue?

I think this is all great stuff to think about. I guess this is my biggest hesitation with Riley, he hasn't really won anything yet and he is in the upper age bracket for coaches. Maybe everything will finally all come together for him here. I guess it's wait and see. Wait and see.

  5. Hey guys-

Husker vision contacted my brother and asked for an MP3 of his rock song "Throw the Bones". It sounds like they are going to play parts of it after a big defensive play or when the blackshirts come on to the field. Pretty freakin awesome!!

The chorus lyrics are basically the saying on the outside of the stadium "In the deed….the Glory"

I was at the Miami game and the place was rocking!! So great to see the fans get feisty.

    Go Big Red!

I'd go with that or Turner...guess we'll find out in a few months. I'm more concerned with developing a strategy that actually incorporates blocking for whoever is back there, so, you know...the returner might actually be able to run for a yard or two.

This. I mean if we don't block for a return, let's at least try punt block. Sheesh.

  7. I really think the offense takes the next step next year. Having TA at QB is going to help a lot.

I am a Tommy Armstrong fan, however, I hear Stanton is the real deal. Tim Tebow, but faster and can pass.

Spring and fall QB battle will be very interesting.

Still think Armstrong right now isn't near as good as a healthy TMart IMHO.

  8. I try not to let play calling get to me too often. Sometimes, a great play call turns into an awful play call because one player messed up an assignment. That said, I think play calling has a lot to do with the feel of a game and timing. There were a few times this year where I certainly thought the timing of a play was bad, or that we didn't have the right personnel in for a play that we probably should have. But, for the most part, I didn't think the play calls were a problem.

There is a big difference between being totally disgusted with the play calling and claiming we need a change or that our OC doesn't have a clue to......Meh....I would have called a different play there. Sometimes I think fans get so caught up in a certain situation that doesn't work and claim the OC is an idiot when really, the players didn't execute or just hey....it didn't work.

For the most part, I have been happy with our offensive production. We are top 20 in rushing and still have a decent passing attack that can only get better with a QB in his second year.

This post reminded me of how frustrated I was when Watson was here. I was really ready for him to be gone. I have been a bit disappointed with Beck at times, but still have hope that his best years are ahead of him. Bo does a great job of keeping consistent staff, I don't see it discussed much, but I think it's a good thing. Longer tenured staff will pay dividends.........someday.........I hope.

  9. I fully believe we recruited 1 or 2 guys to specifically handle punt returns. We'll see how they do when they get here.

It would be nice, if not only do they hold on to the ball, but if they get some decent returns as well. Maybe take a couple to the house!

I believe we're 10-15 less turnovers and solid special teams play away from a championship baby! Change those things and see you in the playoffs!

  10. What is it that our opponents look at our offense and say, "this is Nebraska, this is what they do..."

    Ha Ha! Awesome!

I guess my case in point is games such as UCLA, Minn, if we start getting beat, all hell breaks lose and we have no identity to get us back on track. I do wonder if we start to eliminate turnovers what kind if effect that might have on us.

I fully believe we best MSU this year if we have even half the turnovers.

  11. Give Cross more Carries. Give the tight ends more catches. Get the fullbacks the ball. That covers it right?????

Still will be curious as to where these extra plays during a game will come from, or who people think should get less to get these positions addressed

No. No spiel needed. You saw the topic of the thread. It's not complicated. Cross more, Abdullah less. Maybe develop Newby a bit while we are at it. Not a complicated deal really. No, not because someone doesn't like Abduallah or thinks he's a bad guy. Don't try to turn this into some sort of "hate" thing like a lot of you clowns try to do with everything Martinez related. Nope, I'd say everyone loved Abduallah. The kids a beast and sounds like he does everything the right way. No, this could benefit Abdullah's future and the future of Nebraska football. Running back by committee, it's the new "in" thing. Let's make it an "N" thing.

Wasn't implying Abdullah less. Just use cross more. Also use him smarter.

Why run 4-5 plays up the gut then 2-3 pass plays?

I have really enjoyed reading this discussion. Lots of great points and some awesome statistics here. Glad to be a part of Husker Nation!

  12. What is it that our opponents look at our offense and say, "this is Nebraska, this is what they do..."

My personal feeling is that under Beck, we have no true offensive Identity. What is the guy trying to do? It's frustrating for me because we have so many weapons.

I would like us to be able to say we can do this...stop us.

    What are your thoughts? Discuss....
