  1. Playing Iowa is like playing that one apathetic guy in fantasy football... you know, the one who has given up and no longer checks his line up for byes and injuries. It's hard to care if you win because you know that he doesn't care if he loses.

For the same reason, a loss stings particularly badly because you know they were just going through the motions and are satisfied with any win and any season outcome.

We are upset that we are 8-3 going into the game. They are happy to have beaten Michigan to get to 7-4.

When we played OU, the stakes were always high. Both cared A LOT.

If you won, you went to the Orange Bowl and possibly to the National Title Game. If you lost, you lemented what might have been and it took a while for you to shake off the notion that the season was ruined by that defeat.

Coming off a 4-8 season, why wouldn't we be happy to get to 7-4 and continuing to get closer to back on track? We're okay with any season outcome? Umm...Yes, that's why so many Iowa fans are fed up with Ferentz, want him out, etc; because they're content with whatever each season brings us... People want 8 or more wins every year. It's not easy to do with some of the inherent disadvantages, and quite honestly we were spoiled during the 2000s because of how good we became. When things started to slip a bit, and 7 win seasons started happing, people in Hawkeye Nation are getting antsy because they demand more. To think that Iowa fans are content with average, 7 win seasons, on a consistent basis is absurd. This year, though, coming off 4-8 with what was seemingly a much tougher schedule, I think in August, many would've been content with 7 wins. Now? People want 8, and they want it bad. A likely trip to the Outback Bowl after a 4-8 season would make this one a pretty darn good one for Iowa fans. Iowa fans want this one Friday because it is a perfect opportunity to start turning this into a rivalry that could be pretty good someday.

I came across a stat today..Since 1998 Nebraska has 64 losses. From 1962-1997 they had only 69. Nebraska Football will never be what it was; be mad at 8-3, especially with a weak schedule, but additionally, understand that you're not a program that will win 10+ every year anymore. The national recruiting that made Nebraska so good is not near what it was, and their defense just isn't close to that true 90's blackshirt d.

I understand this is a Husker forum, and it may not be my place to make this post, but I thought I'd give my take from an Iowa perspective.

Go eat an Iowa dick, you'll find noone here that's your type.

Maybe most Iowa fans have a more realistic expectation for where their program is at this point. Maybe Nebraska fans shouldn't be so upset at an 8-3 record? Seeing as that has been and will be the norm for Nebraska football for quite some time it might be a good idea to not set the bar too high. The college football landscape is vastly different than it was when Nebraska was a power. This makes it very difficult for a program like Nebraska or Iowa to compete for National titles on a consistent basis ("...but you're an Iowa fan what do you know about winning titles?" Please save it.) I do think it's fair for the both of our programs to expect 8-10 win seasons on a regular basis with the occasional 11 when things fall into place and 6-7 when it's time to rebuild. Both of our programs simply don't have the recruiting resources to do that. I mean lets face it both fan bases come from boring states to a 5 star athlete from Florida. My main point is that I don't believe that Nebraska is what it once was and most likely never will be. I'm not even trying to start a flame war by saying that, Nebraska has great history and it's hard to match that in the mid-west.

What is more likely to happen is Nebraska consistently being a tough team that is enjoyable for their fans to watch. As for me from an Iowa perspective, I truly believe that Iowa is getting better from being in the toilet last season and could be ready to make this series something special over the years. Friday's game should be great as both teams are very even and have strengths and weaknesses that will create interesting matchups. Iowa is not Colorado, but it's hard for me to say that given the recent results. For Iowa's sake I hope that they show some passion that was lacking the past two years to show that they are even with Nebraska. Here's to a great game on Friday :thumbs

I'm sure there's a Nebraska joke thread on an Iowa board somewhere. Steal one of these, change the "Iowa" to "Nebraska" and go type it there. Laugh with your kind. Now here's to kicking your collective teeth in AGAIN.

  3. Michigan didn't see it, nor did Northwestern. Every time I see it I cringe a little. I think MSU will go for the ball when they see our option coming, hopefully Tommy is wise to that possibility, but roughly half of his pitches are flat out scary looking. Nobody has really stopped our option, so I think we are ripe for the picking and them picking off a pitch or us fumbling one and Sparty taking one to the house could be a huge momentum changer. Bad feelings about today, but then again I felt the same way last week! GO BIG RED!! :bigredn:

At least they didn't take it to the house on that play

  4. We've seen TA fake the pitch and take it up field on multiple occasions. He does a great job of forcing defenders to either commit to him, or the RB. Not worried about Tommy's ability to run the option at all.

Only 1 of 5 turnovers, but it was early and it changed the game. Only quoting you because it fit best, but here's a big fat TOLD YA SO. After I posted it, even the BTN guys were talking about the "pitch relationship" WTF Newby was out there then, and why the pitch went to him instead of Abdullah I will never know

  6. Wow! Really thought there would be a little more buzz about the game this AM. Maybe it's just too early? I was really impressed with the athleticism shown by this team. Shields is a stud! Petteway is a beast! Webster flashed SOOO much potential! Pitchford! Are you kidding me?! An athletic big man!! OMG I'm sooo fired up about this season after last night!!! And WITHOUT Gallegos and Biggs! How can Husker Nation not be ampped about this team? I've officially climbed back on the band wagon! Lookin' forward to stayin' for awhile!

Oh...and...sorry for all the exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with you! What a transformation in a couple of short years. Miles has done a hell of a job, and the university committing to basketball is a very important key to his success. Gulf Coast looked shell shocked all night, lots of energy in that arena. I wasn't there but holy cow did it sound loud in there!!

  7. Most people fear change, but that is a topic in itself.

What I do know is that Wisconsin looks a lot closer to our preferred identity than we do--and they do it with recruiting classes that are nowhere near the rating of our classes. If we could get a similar return from our recruits, the Big Ten title would be ours to lose. That is on the coaches. There's another thread talking about what has happened to Imani Cross and who is responsible for it. Just imagine if Imani was playing for the Badgers......you know them. They're that team that has recruiting classes ranked somewhere around 50 and look more like Nebraska than Nebraska. That's making the most out of your personnel, and THAT is coaching.

    Couldn't agree more. +1 because I can't +2.

  8. We so badly need a QB coach. Elite programs have them. Why does Bo not see the value?

You mean like having our OC as a QB coach plus a GA who works mostly with the QBs?

Not at all. I mean like a real, dedicated, paid to coach quarterbacks. not call plays.

I looked around, seems I was wrong, dedicated QB coaches mostly exist in the NFL. Just wonder why Taylor had to go to California to change anything about his game.

  9. See Crewe we agree about everything you said except that part about there not being that sentiment when Taylor was younger. I disagree. Matter of fact, not only was/is he beloved by many many Husker fans but his freshman and sophomore years I believe he was discussed nationally in the Heisman race. I actually remember exactly how nuts people went about his speed. He made Washington and Kansas State shart their purple panties with his speed.

I won't derail this thread either, but TM has/has gotten massive respect not only from this fan base, but also nationally for a good portion of his career. He was far more successful in his initial games an TA has been as well if I remember correctly. The love affair with TM has been long lived. His senior year was supposed to be golden, sadly his injuries have taken that away from him.

Well said. It is terribly sad and I'm sure this plagues the staff as well, they have been together most of their careers. I do hope Taylor has a great career after he earns his degree.

  10. TA I think kind of predetermines sometimes where he is headed with the ball. From what he sees from the defense he believes a route will become open. By the time he sees the play develop he let's it go and it's too late. He has just been fooled that's all. He will learn. It's just a mental thing. Anyone who doesn't expect some mental things from a freshman QB in Div. 1 college football doesn't have realistic expectations. Give him time. As I said above, as long as we are winning games, let's let the kid take some lumps and learn from it. Keep rotating RK in and if we need to play RK more we know we have him ready to go. It's working so far pretty darn well.

But....but....what about Jamise Winston? Why isn't our QB as good as him? We're Nebraska!!! :sarcasm

  11. It looks to me like most of Tommy's picks and incompletions are due to misreads or miscommunication with the receivers. I'm no football coach so someone who has more than just an opinion about it (facts) please tell me that Tommy is not just a slow, athletic pick machine. I've been going round with guys at work for 2 weeks now that think he's just another miss at QB. I think he will be great in time, still just a bit green right now.
