Deontre Thomas on the White team is a bit of a surprise considering he outplayed Peyton Newell last year for playing time

Damian Jackson on the White team over Daishon Neal worries me that Riley battled a bit too hard for Neal's services during recruiting

    I wouldn't be too quick to speculate that Red is 1st & 2nd team.  It looks more like a 1 & 3 versus 2 & 4 split to me.

Most interesting thing is how light we are at CB.. 5 listed CB... Heck even light at DB all around.

    I see it as

    Martinez 1a

    Gebbia 1b

    Bunch 2

    Vedral ?

Coaches said they would put a majority of guys sticking out on 1 side to see who can play.  Not sure if they applies to QBs too though

Or, maybe they are actually splitting 1s and 2s to separate teams.  Makes sense from the RB split and what has been reported from camp.

    Red                                         White

    1st team                                2nd team

    QB Gebbia                            QB Bunch

    RB Bell                                  RB Bradley

    3rd team                                4th team

    QB Martinez                          QB Vedral

    RB Wilbon                              RB Ozigbo

What I'm saying is that the sold ticket number is the same for every game (if we sell them all out, right?), and the number of non-ticketed people there (media, players, team staff, etc.) does not vary by 1,000+ from game to game.

I don't venture to say if the Northwestern game did or didn't have 90k people, but per this picture and this video I don't have any reason to doubt that the attendance reported was an accurate count of people present:

    northwestern-v-nebraska-09a768c2579a81da

Well, per the OWH article by Sam in Feb. there were around 9,000 less scanned tickets for the NW game in comparison to the Wisconsin game, however both of the reported attendances were around 89,000.  So, I don't think the amount of non-ticketed attendance varies by 9,000.

Sir,, the competition he is up against at OSU to be the starter is tougher than here right now. That may not be the case in a couple of years as Frost builds his own roster, but as of today it is harder to be the starter at OSU. Let's keep it real.

I don't know.  I'm not ready to anoint Haskins as some great QB just yet (or Tua from Alabama for that matter) based off of results from playing part of a game.  I've seen that scene play out way too many times where the backup QB with a different skill set looks like the second coming because the defense doesn't know how to react and gets "brain freeze" because they game planned to handle the starting QB and his weaknesses.  I'll let them start for a season first before I see how they rate.

Also, right now it appears that the QB room has great chemistry.  I don't know if you want to take the risk of messing that up by bringing in a grad transfer.

I'll admit saying something like "it's up to you guys to piece that together" is somewhat of an odd statement to make but, then again, I think Verduzco is... sort of a weird dude.

From Walter's perspective, I think what he's saying is 'look, I've got a team to coach and it's not my place to say why a player was or wasn't there today. That's Scott's job.'

I think it was a timing (or mistiming) issue.  I think Verduzco thought the press release about Patrick asking for and being granted his release was supposed to happen before practice was over.  The first thing he said was something to the effect that I'm guessing you guys have heard about Patrick.  When the reporters said no, he then had to backtrack a little and say that POB wasn't at practice and he'll leave it up to the reporters to figure out why.

I don’t want to pee in anyone’s Cheerios, and I’ll be listening to Greg Austin today during small group sessions at the Clinic, but, is it not ironic that one of the players included in the last decades “weakest” area of the team is now leading our OL?

disclaimer: I really believe in this whole staff including Austin. I just thought it was funny. Obviously great coaches didn’t have to be great players

I don't know. I thought Callahan presided over some fairly decent O-line play, especially 2006 when Austin was a senior.  I seem to remember a lack of O-Line depth and injuries (guys playing at 75% or so) being the main O-line bugaboo during Callahan's short stint at Nebraska.

Does this imply that we can go back and serve crow to anyone who is wrong about a starter this coming season?

I know.  Do we really need "nana nana boo boo" posts?  What are we a bunch of second graders?

Stay healthy and infuse Woodyard, jones, and watt Into that group and I think we will find some depth.   I think all of those guys have a chance to play early.

It would be cool to hit teams with the bigger "M" package of Morgan, McQuitty, McGriff for the body blows and then roll out 4 wide "super fast" set with Spielman, Lindsey, Mike Williams, and Woodyard for the knockout uppercuts.

Yes, he can go to a B1G school.  I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I know the Big 12 had a rule that you had to sit out 2 years if you transferred from another school in conference.  I don't know if the B1G has a similar rule, but I don't think it does.  If you look at a list of schools that fit his style, a lot of B1G would be on it:  Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin.

I will also add that Wisconsin has recruited some damn good RB over the last few years.  They weren't just some .8000 low 3 star "system" guys.

I know it is higher than Thomas Grayson is currently ranked, but 3-star Jonathan Taylor was only the 44th ranked rb (by 247 sports) in May of 2016 when he was committed to Rutgers and Wisconsin offered.  His only offers from "big time" programs were from Wisconsin and Va Tech in May of 2016.  He did not decommit from Rutgers until October of 2016 and committed to Wisconsin a few days later in November of 2016.  It wasn't like a ton of teams were beating down the door for this guy as no one else offered after those two May offers and his rankings kept increasing at Rivals and 247.  So, just because he ended up being a damn good RB and fairly highly ranked by the services in the end doesn't mean everyone thought so at the time of his recruitment.

POB needing to go to a class was the first thing I thought of. If it was late afternoon practice, and Fall, I would let myself run away with everyone’s imagination. At this point and given the newness of the offense, I don’t think Frost has depthed the QB’s, at least nothing concrete. He’ll probably tell them where they sit toward the end of spring ball but will encourage them all to work through summer and see how things go in fall. I think they all do enough good things that the coaches have not decided one of them will definitely not play.

Although he did say that 2 have started separating themselves and that they would need to get those guys more reps to get the team prepared to play football, which they did start doing a little bit today.  QBs are usually a pretty smart lot, so, they probably see the writing on the wall after today's practice.

I wonder if Frost gets us more competitive we’ll see us scheduled less frequently as a crossover matchup against some of the East’s top teams. It would kind of make sense to give the favored West team less tough crossover games against the East’s favored teams to avoid a rematch in the CCG. Lately I’d say Wisconsin is a good bet to be the West champion.  We’ve been just another average West team on the schedule for OSU, Michigan, PSU. That kind of scheduling is a bit self fulfilling prophecy but to avoid a rematch it could make sense.

Right now it seems like they are trying to develop a cross rivalry with Nebraska and Ohio State.  For all of the currently released B1G schedules, NU plays tOSU every year.

Coaches exist. Some are better than others. Some coaches can do more with less talent. Some do less with more.

Gary Anderson and Brett Bielema?  You staking your reputation on those two guys?

No idea, but Nebraska had more talent than Wisconsin many/most of those years.

Really?  A team that has superior talent doesn't go 1-6, getting blown out multiple times and never blowing out the other team.

Exactly my point.  Nebraska has "out-recruited" every team in the Big 10 West by a wide margin and yet they've been getting trounced by Wisconsin and Iowa.  They've also been beaten regularly by teams like Northwestern and Minnesota.  Not to mention the absolutely embarrassing 55 points Purdue put on us in Riley's first year.

Note I am not saying recruiting isn't important.  I am also not saying Nebraska shouldn't go after the best possible players.  What I am saying is that recruiting great players is only the starting point.  What our coaches do with these players, how they take to the coaching, their commitment to working/getting better, coaching continuity, staying relatively injury free--all these factors combine to give us a perception of "talent" level.

My over-arching point is: Nebraska has recruited great players all along.  We've lacked great coaching, player development, and individual player "want" for several seasons.  The net result is the tired, low-hanging fruit of the we have no (or little) talent and can't compete mantra-and it's a load of malarky.

I don't think recruiting rankings are the end all of analysis, but from my previous link.

    OSU  - 955.51

    UM - 874.89

    PSU - 779.49

    NU - 693.46

    MSU - 680.94

    Wisky - 639.76

    NW - 627.54

    Iowa - 593.93

We are much closer in talent to Michigan State, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Iowa than we are to Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.  And, that is exactly how the games have played out since we have been in the Big 10.
