  1. seaofred you are talking about all the things they do poorly but I haven't seen any credit to the things they do well. You couldn't complain about how we should have beaten Ohio State or Kansas if we didn't compete in those games to begin with which a lot of teams in the country can't say they have. Do I think Miles is the best coach out there? No, not by a long shot, but I think he deserves the chance to see how this season plays out and what he can build from that as this season has had huge sparks that look like something we can be proud of. Every coach has head scratching decisions and certain Achilles heel type tendencies but not many coaches have gotten Nebraska basketball to where Miles has previously and could this year.

I'm an eternal optimist and while I don't want the losing seasons we have had, we have to give and take a little and hope what we are seeing now with current players and this season can move the curve to the winning side continuously. Late season losing streak this year though and the chances are over...

  2. First week with fan fest was awesome and unfortunately/thankfully (as it got cancelled and had some crazy storms) I had my two young girls with me so had to leave early and didn't see much of FNL. Free pizza, chicken sandwiches, sub sandwiches, hot dogs, snow cones, face painting, balloon animals, games, then go watch some high caliber talent light up the practice after.

  3. I am not saying anything of the such. But some Nebraska fans seem to think that this is the only program that wants to improve.

If you lived in Minnesota, 4* athlete, being recruited by your home team and Nebraska, what would be the draw to Nebraska? Most of them were not alive the last time we won anything of importance.

Yes Minnesota may be improving their commitment to football with the revenue but that doesn't mean they are jumping ahead of us in recruiting rankings just because they are closer to some higher talent. We have a few more down years and they keep improving, then yes this could change, but the fact of the argument is, it hasn't.

  4. My wife and I are bringing our 2 year old and baby out tonight and we'll watch some of the FNL stuff after the fan fest. We came to FNL last year and just enjoyed getting out of the house and sitting in the stadium but this seems like it will be a lot of fun. Anyone have a guess on how many people they might get each week? I'm guessing a lot more of the hardcore fans will come next week as the list of attendees has multiple stars compared to a few this week.

  5. It's been too long in coming as we brought a national television appeal unlike most programs, including a majority of the then existing Big Ten schools. We may not be the top box office draw we were a couple decades ago but we're still in the top twenty surely.

The interesting question is how much more the Big Ten got from us than we got from them? Hopefully, over the next decade, the tide turns toward NU and we really do benefit. The change in conferences was a net benefit to Nebraska as compared to the Big 12 and perhaps any other options (if any) that may have been had otherwise. But we have been given a rough iniation and a guantlet of disadvantageous scheduling as part of our 'entry fee' and dues to join. Overall, I am glad we made the change but that opinion could change if we don't see our 'full membership' standing begin to rebalance the scales going forward so that after another 5 years we should have an honest equality in terms of home vs away matchups with all conference schools. And, hopefully the television coverage will be fair and balanced as well. We likely deserve some extra helpings for a while to make up for the short stick we have had in some ways.

Maybe I'm not looking at this from the same perspective as you are but I'm not seeing how we haven't been treated fairly with our initiation and scheduling compared to any of the other schools. Yeah, not getting full funding until now kind of sucked but we knew that coming in and agreed to it as we eased into the Big 10. Our television coverage has been decent, not great, but that's also because other schools have played better than us and you put better teams on better coverage.

    A few things

    • I think that Erstad and company need to get on the recruiting trail a bit more far flung. Two California kids, most are from Big Ten country. While there are talented baseball players around the region I think we need to compete more for the national targets if we want to compete on the national stage.
    • Coaching staff, we need to spend some money to get some experienced coaches from teams with post season pedigree. The athletic department makes more than enough money and have already infested in the facilities. Let's steal a coach or two from some teams with consistent CWS experience.
    • Preparation. Something is wrong when there is this consistent lackluster performance in the post season. They need to examine how they get ready, maybe bring in an outside perspective.

This is a big point that stuck out to me for two reasons: 1) ever since Will Bolt left, we have yet to find a quality replacement and our hitting has suffered since then, and 2) IIRC, Erstad is taking base minimum as a coach, which is why we're able to pay top dollar and keep Silva on.

We have the money to go get a quality, proven coach that's going to work with Erstad and improve the cache of this program. It just requires Eichorst actually getting off his sorry *** and helping to do something about it.

How does Eichorst go out and find us a good assistant coach? Isn't that supposed to be Erstad's job which should be a bit easier taking the pay cut to offer a bit more than other schools? The investment Nebraska (Eichorst indirectly) has in baseball is much more than many schools who perform well in post season games and don't go 1-2, 0-2 BBQ.

  7. Nothing against anyone here doing the old switcheroo with season tickets as I would be doing the same thing, but based on what I'm hearing with ticket policies won't there be a lot of season tickets coming available in the next 10-15 years? People will be unfortunately passing away and the ticket office will get wise to John Smith who has been alive with season tickets for 70 years and start charging everyone donations and a lot won't want/be able to pay the high costs.

I had thought everyone paid these donation prices as my parents were never big live game people so they never had season tickets but hearing that (a lot?) of people are grandfathered in scares me a bit for the donation levels and if the University can keep up the sales?

  8.

I heard rumblings from players last year that Armstrong wasn't well liked. Can't speak to chemistry and how it played out on the field but I'm sure it didn't help anything.

There are one heck of a lot of very good QBs that aren't well liked by their team. That includes some of our most prized alumni.

I would agree with that but I would also say there are different reasons why you might not be liked by your team. Some of those reasons could actually be beneficial to winning and some of them would be a hindrance.

  9. "And it's interesting how quickly the excuses have gone from "Miles has to be given a chance to develop that great sophomore class he recruited" to "it's good they're gone because we're better without them." "

For me personally it has never been about a specific class or recruit and I didn't like the transfers but if it's what ends up working then I suppose it's for the best. I've said the past few months that Miles should have one more year to try to put the puzzle together however that is because on paper he has continued to bring in great pieces even if some have left. With the recent transfers and rumblings of more I got nervous about that thought, but we keep trekking forward. Miles is who we have and even if it hasn't worked out how it should have so far, it looks like it could with the right formula, maybe we find that next year and get our first tourney win, maybe not.

  10. I like this. Whether they are just going in and saying hi to the coaches or actually talking to specific kids they want I think it's great to check in on your local schools periodically (should do this a few times a year). If they have the talent at the time or not, just like a business client, you have to show them you care. Our opponents that are working hard will always be knocking on doors and if we aren't working as hard or harder then when that talent is there they will be paying attention to the ones who have shown them love.

  11. After watching state basketball, I feel compelled to passive aggressively complain about the inability (or lack of effort) to get local kids. It would take an awful lot to convince me that Patton, Tre-Deon, Tre'Shawn, Hahn, and Khryi wouldn't be huge in Lincoln.

I'm definitely out of the loop about the extenuating circumstances that may have prevented them from coming (eligibility, etc.). I also understand that different settings produce different results.

However, as I watched the tournament, I couldn't help but feel confused about letting a kid like Strom go to UC Davis (I'd prefer to not read about his shortcomings for those of you ready to tear apart an 18 year old kid). I also feel like Chang will be another that slips through and does well somewhere else.

Maybe they aren't D1 material straight out of high school, but I'd love to see these local kids be the ones to take this team into national relevance.

If they were bringing in kids similar in talent to the instate kids then I would agree with you. On paper though, the kids we have recruited are rated much higher than any in Nebraska other than the few TOP talent kids that aren't coming to Nebraska anyway. I loved seeing Strom dominate at state and in no way do I want to tear him apart, but do you think Nebraska is worse than UC Davis in basketball and the players we are bringing in are worse than Strom?

The results on the court aren't showing us much with this approach right now for whatever reason but who's to say it won't next year or that it would work with lesser talented (on paper and all scouting metrics) Nebraska kids?

I want a good basketball team. Nebraska has sucked at basketball for most of it's existence. If we are going to suck, I would rather suck with Nebraska kids.

I would definitely agree with this, but I don't want to suck so we should get the best players we can get to try to not suck.

  12. Is Akenten a possible producer early next year?

If you have seen some of his highlight reel I would say so. Maybe depends on how he transitions to playing with the big boys and maybe not a starter but someone we can count on for a few minutes and some energy.

  13. Could we?

Here is how our path looks...

Penn State - W 82-66. This game shouldn't be a game if we get back to playing the game.

Michigan State - L by 9, by 16. This is probably our toughest challenge in the entire conference.

Minnesota - L by 15. You must understand we were playing terrible, and kept it "relatively" competitive.

Purdue - W by 3. Yes, it seemed like a fluky win, but it was a win nonetheless. We can play with them.

Wisconsin- L by 1. Let this one slip through our fingers.

Honestly, if we play as well as we did to start the conference slate, so get back to playing Nebrasketball. Do you think we could make a run in this thing? Wash away the memories of this past 4 games, and most of the games where Morrow didn't play. What do you think?

A week or two ago I would have said of course but now I don't think the team has it in them to win all of these together. I don't think they have quit but 2nd guessing and everything else swirling around the program is enough to do us in for an extended stretch of games you need to be fresh for.

  14. This team is young and has had moments. NCAA Tourney next year or you show Miles the door.

Not saying Miles is the guy but I want to give him a chance with next years team.

Gotta go with this as well. One more year to give him credit for the major upswing in recruiting (results on the court be damned) and see what happens. No NCAA tourney and it's time to look at someone different because maybe Miles could do it eventually but it wouldn't be consistent.

  15. I think coaches should hire teenage kids who play Madden all day to assist them in clock management, going for 2 decisions, and when to go for it on 4th down. I always see coaches make so many mistakes in these instances, including our very own Mike Riley.

When I was younger I always went for it on fourth down in NCAA Football. My mistake was thinking I had my friends fooled (note, I always went for it and DID NOT have them fooled) and I also tried things like fake punts on 4th and 10 which are pretty much never converted.
