  1. One thing I wonder about with the idea of potentially hiring all of these A-list assistants is whether Riley can ride the reins over them. Most of these guys being considered either have been HC's or are considered ready to be one. Bo wasn't the only guy in CFB with an ego and can any "dream team" staff work past their own ambitions and for how long? Bo obviously wasn't looking to hire anyone he thought might potentially be his replacement...

Florida State situation a few years ago when Bowden was looking to go got me thinking about it. Hope Riley doesn't get caught for whatever reason in a pool of sharks looking to be "next".

I wouldn't be worried about this plentg of great college programs and every NFL team gets their assistants poached for a bigger better job, that's part of the coaching game. Can't fear someone will leave after xx years, if so it means you built a winning program

Again, I don't think Riley is a terrible hire. But when we knew this was coming for at least one year and probably several, were certain that's what we were doing for about a month then settle on a guy who's main selling point is other schools wanted him 12 years ago, he had some good seasons 8-10 years ago, he SHOULD do better at a bigger school and he's a nice guy, I'm not sure why we had to go for that four days after we fired our previous coach.

Solid take on the situation, Mav.

I'd say the four days was simply due diligence on our Administration's part.

I agree that hiring a 61-year-old coach is odd, and there were seemingly better candidates out there. Perhaps hiring a man in the waning years of his career is part of a long-term plan?Af

Yeah, I've been thinking about the timing also. But really, even with everything lined up ahead of time I don't think SE would've wanted to make an announcement much faster than four days. Remember the initial outbursts on Sunday? The team was in shock, and fans were bewildered and grumbling. It took a couple of days of twisting in the wind to get everyone on board with wanting a name to be announced. The timing of yesterday's announcement was almost perfect. Was it by design, or dumb luck? It's likely that no one will know for sure. I think the NU admin has said about all they're going to say on the search topic.

I actually intended to convey that I thought four days was pretty short to end up with a coach who basically no one was expecting to get a job somewhere else. Again, I'm not saying it was a bad choice or that it won't work out. But we were in no danger of him taking a job somewhere else and us losing out. He wasn't high on many people's list. In fact, he wasn't on anyone's list at all. There was no reason to hire him that fast other than to make things look to go smoothly. Unless he was absolutely the only guy we were looking at and I think that would be unfortunate.

Well I would agree with you, no we were not going to lose Riley if we dont sign him in 4 day's time BUT it must be done that quickly to calm down huskerboard. All joking aside doing this quickly is of extreme importance to 1. Start building his assistant coaching staff 2. Hit recruiting trail while there is still time..recruits and current players don't wany to wait 40 days to find an answer 3. Allows current staff who won't be kept on to find work on other teams. And my two cents on Bert-there is NO way he was offered! that rumor totally came out for him to get a raise.

  3. Being the backup QB is the greatest job in the world, haven't you guys seen Blue Mountain State? No but seriously though,I would absolutely LOVE to see the skers w a legit qb. Tired of having a rb for a qb who can't throw.

  4. I was surprised as anyone else. I did like that SE said in his statement that he expects Riley to win BIG championships and compete for national championships. Both plural by the way. That is probably my main concern with Riley is does he know expectations because in the Pac 12 he had the reputation of playing spoiler against some of the consistently higher ranked teams and he pulled it off at times. But now he is the big dog and wondering if he is ready for that? Sure play your spoiler role but you have to win all the rest of the games you are supposed to. I sure hope he is ready to get after it. I'd say he needs to win a BIG championship in next 3 years.

Well recently huskers haven't been able to play spoiler OR win the games we're supposed to win. In fact we've won some games by the skin of our teeth against opponents we should have handily taken care of ie Kellogg's hail mary to tha 'Stache against NW...ameer grinding outt hat TD agaist McNeese. Looking.forward to SOUND fundamental football and Riley WILL bring it

  5. I remain 100% more interested in Mike Riley's first season at Nebraska than Bo Pelini's eighth.

I'm with you Chamberlain. Holy Devaney you guys, let this stuff play out. It's still 20FOURTEEN!! Did you naysayers forgetgetting our asses handed to usby wisky this year??? Gordon put an NCAA record on us in THREE quarters! I'm sure Coach Riles will be great and from I saw on the news tonight, the players instantly dell in love with the guy. I'm looking forward to team chemistry I'm 2015. Bo was poison

I'll try. Riley has done yeoman's work in bringing any talent to Corvallis, so he knows how to recruit despite geographic disadvantages. He gets good results despite a talent and resource disadvantage (albeit with a drop-off over the past couple of years). He's widely known to be one of the nicest, most genuine guys in all of college football, which would definitely be a atmosphere change after Bo.

From Reddit. UCLA Fan saying this. I found this very encouraging

Do you think Oregon has more or less geographic disadvantages than Nebraska?
Corvallis has so many more it's laughable.
With the exception of proximity to the ocean, mountains, west coast talent, and playing in a better conference you are correct.
    LOL

Ok dude, they get outspent 50-1 by their closest competitor, have facilities that some Texas High schools laugh at, were 1-3 win team at most before him, and he still gets talent comparable to our last coach.

How about you let the man at least have a press conference before you jettison the guy.

So, money spent and facilities. How about the weather? Proximity to talent?

The last i checked, Riley's recruiting consisted of mostly 2* and low 3* recruits, which isn't as good as our previous staff.

The bright side is at least that level of recruiting can keep us competitive in our current division.

So if he can beat top 10 teams with 2* and 3* talent imagine what he can do with better talent, facilities, and resources

  7. This is downtown Corvalis. I'm sure recruits everywhere are jumping to get in on some of this action!

    AllPictures097.jpg

BRUTAL. Although Lincoln is no peach of a town to recruit to either. Sounds like Riley has heavy ties to Cali and Texas recruiting=KICKASS!!!

  8. He truly is the Ginga Ninja pulling some crazy $#*# like this outta his @$$. Well let's keep this thread going for the next four years when we fire Riley and shell out another $10mill to send him packing and we can all speculate the rumors about hiring 2018 Iowa Western Community College head coach Bran O'Malley

  9. took me an hour to read through this thread but it was all worth it! Hope whoever it is will be announced tomorrow to end all of the speculation.

I DONT WANT IT TO EVER END. this thread can last forever to fuel speculation throughout all eternitypost-12838-0-41940100-1417698415_thumb.jpg

Well The Sock don't know up from down today. The Sock thinkin' that The Ginger Assassin done playin' us like, well, puppets.

The Source sayin' that The Ginger Assassin may have pulled the wool over the eyes of some Husker $ugar Daddies, (some big'uns) since they was expectin' the Tressel/Frost thing to happen today and if it ain't, then it maybe won't happen at all.

The Source thinkin' that Bielema was a smoke screen maybe even from The Ginger Assassin hisself to distract us from what's happenin'.

So, The Sock startin' to feel like we's chasin' our tails and The Ginger Assassin keepin' us a spinnin' until a real announcement come Sunday (The Source say Sunday, not The Sock, The Sock don't know nuthin' on his own).

All The Source agrees that The Ginger Assassin is a smooth operator. The Sock hopin' that The Ginger Assassin is as good at hirin' football coaches as he is at messin' with us.

When The Sock hears, The Sock talks.

Since we have till Sunday, should we begin trolling mizzou fans and Pinkel... ie. "Pending the outcome of the SEC Championship Game this Sat, Ginger Assassin will meet with GP on Sunday to discuss the vacancy left by Pelini. The salary negotiations would appear to be in line with Saban's yearly earning..."

Eichhorst and Pinkel!!! PINKEL AND EICHHORST!!!!
