Not sure if this is being discussed anywhere else but wouldn't Foster be in line for a medical redshirt right now? Can they still play him for a couple of games at the end of the season and still get this done?

I thought that was the story but according to Sean Callahan last week you have to show that you've missed TWO seasons due to injury to get a medical hardship.

That's incorrect. Foster could still play and be eligible for the redshirt.

How does a player obtain a medical redshirt?

A player obtains a medical redshirt by applying for one through the NCAA following a season when they meet each of the following requirements:

    • The player must have suffered an injury during their senior year of high school, or during one of their four eligible seasons for college competition. (This does not provide for players who are already redshirting a season and are injured in practice.)
    • The injury suffered must be "incapacitating", meaning it must be a season-ending injury.
    • The injury must occur during the first half of the season.
    • The player must have competed in no more than 30% of the season or four games, whichever is greater.

    The article also says this:

Can this get a player a sixth season of eligibility?

A player who has already had a redshirt season and then qualifies for a medical redshirt in a subsequent season can be approved for a sixth year of eligibility. However, those cases are tougher to win, as the player is supposed to have missed two seasons for "circumstances beyond their control", where taking a redshirt as a true freshman would not typically meet that criteria.

Foster already redshirted as freshman. Also, his injury clearly isn't season-ending if he's coming back, so I don't see how he would qualify.

  2. This is purely anecdotal, but I was knocked unconscious in a similar way and was cleared to practice/compete 72 hours later. Although there's probably a much higher level of scrutiny now when it comes to post-concussion clearances, and doctors are probably much more cautious now versus then, I wouldn't be shocked if he played on Saturday.

    Don't forget about Pitt!

"From our standpoint it's been a fabulous relationship," said Pittsburgh Athletic Director Steve Pederson. "I couldn't ask for a better situation. They do exactly what they say they're going to do and deliver exactly what they say they're going to deliver. The exciting thing about it is they listen to our student athletes to find out what it is that they want to wear."

One of these two things is not protected under the 1st Amendment and is not allowed in our country as 'free speech'.

I'd have to see where you get this. Making terroristic threats or inciting riots are the only two "speech crimes" of which I am aware.

I just looked up some Supreme Court cases before this post, but feel free to double check.

"It requires specificity, it requires intent, and it requires a sense of imminence." is how one law professor makes the distinction.

Again, can't we just get football with our football? If not, then I guess the floodgates are opened. :dunno

    28-311.01. Terroristic threats; penalty.

    (1) A person commits terroristic threats if he or she threatens to commit any crime of violence:

    (a) With the intent to terrorize another;

    (b) With the intent of causing the evacuation of a building, place of assembly, or facility of public transportation; or

© In reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror or evacuation.

    (2) Terroristic threats is a Class IIIA felony.

    http://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=28-311.01

In State v. Schmailzl, supra, we stated that § 28-311.01(1)(a) prohibits a threat to commit a violent crime when the threat is made with the intention of causing "a state of intense fear in another." State v. Schmailzl, 243 Neb. at 741, 502 N.W.2d at 467. In the same opinion, we also equated the intent to terrorize another with the "production of anxiety in another." Id. at 742, 502 N.W.2d at 468. Thus, the intent to terrorize another is an intent to produce intense fear or anxiety in another. However, a critical feature of the statute for purposes of our analysis here is that it merely requires the intent to terrorize another. It does not require that the recipient of the threat be actually terrorized, and it does not require an intent to execute the threats made. See State v. Saltzman, 235 Neb. 964, 458 N.W.2d 239 (1990).

    State v. Smith, 267 Neb. 917, 678 N.W.2d 733 (2004).

One party is making a peaceful protest for an injustice they sense, hurting no one. The other is trying to chill the speech of the former through threats of violence. Whether you agree or disagree with MRI's actions, it's clear that the acts of those making threats should be thoroughly deplored.

Q: What is it about Ryan Field’s grass that wreaks such havoc on opposing teams?

ZP: I’ve never quite understood this notion, but I think the biggest thing is that perhaps the grass is on the longer side. This year, a lot of the fans have complained that the field just doesn’t look that great. I’d agree that after a relatively dry summer it’s not in the best condition right now, but it looked a lot better last week than the two weeks before.

  7. I would suggest that everyone should download this onto their PC

    https://justgetflux.com/

It blocks out the blue light based on time of day. Definitely helps to wind down in the evenings (as opposed to staring into the constant glow of the screen).

That being said, if Nebraska needs these to beat Wyoming...they might have bigger problems than blue light!

That's what I use too. I used to have problems falling asleep after studying or writing papers late into the night and I think it helped.

Mav posted something earlier about how one of the first things Coach Riley asked Bill Devany to do was to figure out ways to get the players less lethargic during 11 am games. I'm wondering if this is something he came up with.

  8. It's supposed to increase melatonin if I'm not mistaken. I have an app on my laptop that does something similar. Helps your body fall asleep by preventing your body from confusing the light from your computer, smartphone, etc. as daylight.

So, you're pretty much inventing everything off of the top of your head.

Or creating false equivalencies like expecting better than 7-5 meant that a top 10 ranking was expected.

    Got it.

And I've explained and linked to (and others have links to) the evidence about NU's talent relative to its opponents.

We've been through this before. I take the time to go back and find the posts where you say exactly what I've claimed, then you find something irrelevant and distracting to say. Let's save us both the time.

If you're actually hanging your hat on a poster or two suggesting a 7-5 season might not be so bad....whatever.

This team is as deep as 90 to95% of teams in the country. So it should be able to finish in the top 5% to 10% and no worse than top 20% this season, even with injuries.

Name a season where the previous HC's who won at least 9 games didn't lose a key contributor or more to injury.

    Like this?

The top 20% of the 128 FBS teams is a #26 ranking.

During the past several years, the 25th team in the nation (AP poll) has finished with an average of a 9-4 record.

So, yes, I stick to the contention that this team should finish no worse than the top 20% of CFB this year against this schedule.

I also think that it has the POTENTIAL to have an even better record (i.e., 11-2 or better) if it can beat all the teams it "should" beat and one or two that it "shouldn't."

Do you even disagree with me? Or do you just not like that I don't have a strong faith in a .500 staff with 0 championships suddenly "figuring it out"?

I agree that the team should go 9-4 and finish ranked around 25.

I don't agree that this team is top 13 in talent and should finish in the top 13. You stated above that this 2017 class should end up where Nebraska has the past few years: somewhere between 20-25. I think that's probably a fair assessment of where the talent ranks right now, but that's just my opinion.

I don't agree that there are only two teams we "shouldn't" beat (i.e., I think there will be more than two games where we aren't favored). However, it's hard to say now because we're simply guessing as to how good Oregon, Iowa and Wisconsin are compared to Nebraska.

I'm not bitter about your lack of faith in this coaching staff, and I'm not going to argue that they're going to figure it out this year, because I don't know. Our biggest disconnect is regarding talent.

Just my two cents. Regardless, I'm excited for the projections to stop and for the playing to begin.

What teams do you think we beat and lose to this year?

  12.

Big 12 and SEC schools are already getting $30mm+ for TV. Texas is getting approximately $45mm. B1G schools are not going to be making substantially more than other Big 12 and SEC schools.

I think that the 31 million number we keep hearing about is only first tier money, and doesn't include BTN revenue.

I think it was first and second tier (FOX and ESPN) but you're correct that it did not included BTN and other conference revenue (bowls, playoffs, etc.).

Right, first and second tier and not BTN money. But BTN only paid out $1mm per school, right? I'm not sure how much the conference brings in for other TV revenue, but I'm assuming it is a small amount relative to the first, second and third tier rights.

$1 M&Ms??? Is that for one or one bag?

    Dad...stop.

I'm referring to fans who dismiss a guy who goes to Iowa or Minnesota or even the good fcs schools as not being worth an offer because no "powerhouse" came after them. And that dismissive attitude shows up a lot, including in this thread.

Is stating a fact that he has 1 P5 offer dismissive? (And that offer is at a different position than we were looking at him?)

    .

    Yes. Yes it is.

When someone says "who cares if we don't recruit xyz player because he only has an offer from a 'lesser' school" that is exactly the dismissive attitude that demonstrates a lack of understanding around how real world recruiting works.

Probably 2/3 of the NE kids who played during the championship years wouldn't have been recruited by the "powerhouses" because they wouldn't have even been on those schools radars due to location.

Probably true, but a lot of those guys walked on. Scott Shanle comes to mind. Recruiting has changed a lot since then with Hudl, camps, etc. Top programs will notice if you're legit in this day and age.
