My eyes saw this staff guide the team to getting blown out 42-13 in the 3rd quarter to Purdue.

 

That didn't pass they eyeball test, no matter how much Pedeyshine you try to rub in my eyes.

I just read a lot of whining about our team. Whoever said this team was closer to competing for a conference crown this year than any of the previous 10 years hit the nail on the head.

Losing SEVEN games by a combined point total less than a single game against Wisconsin in 3 out of the 4 times we've played them since joining the league. Nobody expected Tommy to throw 4 more interceptions than last year in 2 less games to date. Nobody expected Nebraska's defense to struggle against the pass while changing their defensive philosophy to finish 8th nationally in stopping the run.

Stop whining. This staff and team will win. You sound like five year olds on a long car ride.

Nebraska ranks 41st in the FPI with a 5-6 record above 33 teams with a better record.

Go small but have scorers on the court. Watson, White, Shields, Marrow, and McVeigh. Bring Fuller, Jacobsen and Hammond in off the bench. Let that group build cohesion against the next slate of nobodies. After these next 3 games, they're gonna have 4 out of 5 games against quality opponents that are all played in the state of Nebraska. They have to sweep that stretch if they want to be successful in conference play.

How does everyone ignore that there was nothing that indicated Nebraska "should" win at Purdue?

The starting talent and experience was considerably in Purdue's favor.

Nebraska had no starting veteran QB, starting RB, starting SS, and biggest potential playmaker at WR.

A walk-on, 1st time starting QB that threw 4 picks is about par for the course.

A running game without arguably their best offensive lineman (Nick Gates) blocking out to injury and the best pass protection running back out.

A defensive front seven that has been hodgepodged from the beginning of the season due to suspension or nagging injury.

and a secondary that has proven incapable to handle man coverage and a free safety that has progressively gotten worse every single week.

Hindsight is 20/20 sure, but anyone that thought Nebraska "should" win this game, wasn't paying very close attention.

Those stats should be enough to have Banker and Stewart gone at the end of the year. Dead last in FBS in pass defense and 33% of their #1 receivers on 3rd or 4th down. This scheme is a joke. We let their QB sit back, we lose. Plain and simple. Id' bring the house every down. Play pressure at the LOS. We are no better with a safety over the top than in man. Go for broke and get to their QB every down.

Lol. Scheme? Or the sh**ty personnel? Sorry, but the corners have steadily gotten better while the safety play has been poor and steadily gotten worse.

Iowa's best two wins were against NW and Wiscy. Both of them managed to hold on and beat us at home but they were close.I think now that things are starting to click, we can control the game against them being at home. If we don't let them dictate the pace and control the clock we will beat them. Rythym will be everything.

I know you are an optimist, but the "starting to click" idea is based off one game, in which it really took a miracle for NU to win.

But it was no accident that we were hanging right with them the whole game. I would have been happy with game if we hadn't scored at the end. I'm a glass half full person though.

So fans would have been even happier with another loss, making NU 3-7, just as long as it wasn't a blowout? That's loser talk.

MSU was 8-0. That wasn't 1-6 Purdue. We led, hung with and ultimately beat #7. If that isn't a sign that things are starting to click I don't know what is. We will know for sure after Rutgers.

 

My point is that it was ONE GAME!!! We all thought "things were starting to click" when NU rolled over Minnesota. NU proceeded to crap the bed against Northwestern and Purdue. I understand the want for optimism, but I need to see it for more than one game.

 

I think it's a testament to the injury bug. Nebraska's front seven on the defensive side of the ball was the original starting lineup and the first time this season it was fully intact. It showed on the field. Outside of MSU straight out illegally blocking downfield with their TE, Nebraska played a solid game on the defensive side of the ball going against a veteran offensive line anchored by an All American center. Two of Burrbridge's touchdowns came off of illegal pick plays. OBVIOUS pick plays that were ILLEGAL by rule definition. The entire MSU receiving corps got away with it all game long. Nebraska could learn a few things by doing some of that if they're not going to call it.

But, NU is a "win" for a lot of the teams it played while Iowa was a "loss" for all the teams it played.

that's pretty much my point. Iowa has won, Nebraska has not. They have to play each other still.

During the four years I went to OSU, we had 5 wins in total. That was before Riley. The fan who wrote the letter is obviously a younger fan who has no idea of OSU's football history. Riley turned it around and got close to 2 Rose Bowl appearances. That's a big deal for a school with a terrible history in football.

 

Thinking DONU has 10 win talent is delusional. The D is devoid of any talent except for the a few. Even our All World Safety can't tackle very well. On O, the line is terrible as are the backs. Newby goes down easier than a 2 dollar hooker.

 

Considering they won 9 games last year with many of the same guys it really isn't even close to being delusional.

 

They'd be the same guys if Ameer, Kenny Bell, Josh Mitchell, and Randy Gregory was on the team. They're not and all four of those players had a massive impact and won games single handidly keeping Nebraska from a 6-6 record last year.

If you're naive enough to believe it's backfired on him, you have an obvious agenda and it's a pretty sad one. Get real. He's not going anywhere and the more you think he is, the more you put a stain on the fanbase as a whole.

The sample size is large enough to know that they're not beating bottom dwellers but as it stands all their losses have been to teams with no fewer than 3 losses and they've only played one team with a losing record.

Fact of the matter: Great teams and coaches don't come up on the short end in those close games.

Did you think this was a great team? What evidence did you have to support this squad was a great team?

No offense OP, but I'm so damn tired of seeing this thrown out there. The teams we've lost to were the gimme teams that we didn't even consider losing to. What was the magin of defeat for Miami last year, or for Illinois the last two years? How bad do you think Michigan State and Iowa scores will be. My guess, we'll have lost 7 games by a total of 93 points this year, with Iowa (yeah friggin Iowa who needed our 3rd string team to play two years ago to get their first win against us in how long) and Michigan State (Bo always seemed to have their number) Dropping a margin of defeat of 40 points each on us.

 

I'm admittedly a Riley doubter, but I pray for him and the team to have success every single game and am giving him the same chance I gave Pelini and Callahan, but damn people, please quit trying to justify loosing to the worst Wisconsin team in a decade, a mediocre at best BYU team, a Miami team that FIRED their coach mid-season, Illinois (freaking Illinois with their INTERIM coach, and Northwestern (after Iowa and Michigan destroyed them) by saying it was "ONLY by 13 points" if losing to those teams is being "really close," then every team that manhandled them like we should have is still that much farther ahead of us.

 

This has been a terrible season, at least 3 of the losses are on the staff, and that doesn't leave me much room for optimism. WE ARE NOT CLOSE right now, and I don't know that this staff will get us there, but pray every game for a single sign they can. I got stupid and hopeful after Minny. Stupid me.

 

Oh and what the heck happened to the QB guru O.C. that was supposed to fix Tommy. He has played worse every single game. What happened to not pounding a square peg into a round hole. We're doing it on both offense and defense. Sorry for finally spouting off my frustration, and thanks for not crucifying me.

2. 26 and both years their starting QB and RB either didn't start or missed most of the game to injury.

3. They beat Nebraska's "3rd string" by 21 points on our own field.

4. It's "losing". I'm going to correct every person from here on out that cannot come to terms with spelling it correctly.

5. They've lost to two top 15 teams so far.

6. A 2-loss team with losses to top 25 teams and should be favored in all their remaining games.

7. Every single loss has been due to player execution and the defense being unable to stop the winning score. This is not debatable. All the play calls were the right calls. They have to execute the call. Ifs and buts candy and nuts.

8. Tommy is better. Lots better. He doesn't have the luxury of Ameer Abdullah anymore. He's the focus now and is performing above the fray considering how much he's had to learn and change. Could he be better? Of course, but stop selling the most competitive guy on the team, short.

9. Nobody said this was going to be a breeze. If you thought it was gonna be easy, then it's more of a you problem than a team problem.

The scheme is completely different and is necessary to compete with the teams currently winning championships. Look at the teams in the B1G that run the same pro-style scheme.

I think you're confusing pro-style with pro-set. Pro-style is a balance of run to pass. Utilizes the TE. Runs both single back sets and power I or offset I use of the fullback. Using multiple formations and motions. Maximizing multiple targets within the same formation and motion set.

I'll agree that they do run a number of spread option, but to say that's their entire scheme is false. Let's agree to say they're multiple, mostly because they can be.

I doubt many fans are overly gloomy about the staff because of the 3-5 record. Not sure but I doubt it. My guess is that most of the excessive negativity is coming from a small minority of vocal (vocal *now*) fans. Some of the small group are people who really don't understand analytics at all. 3-5 to them is dispositive. The end. Then there are some agenda folks anti mike, AD, or Perlman plus some pro Bo's. And last but not least are the complainers. They do it because it's what they do. 3-5 is good fodder.

I'm not anti-Mike (but am very anti-Pederson, I mean Eichorst, and his boss).

 

NU screwed up big time going against what TO thought was best for football. We'll suffer the penalty, and all the pretzeled "analytics" aside, this is a .500 staff doing what a .500 staff does.

 

Knute Rockne and Bob Devaney would have a hell of a chuckle over this nonsense.

 

And of course the bottom line is that NU didn't upgrade at all. At best we stayed the same, but have a super nice laid back senior citizen coaching the Huskers now.

He even referenced Knute Rockne and Bob Devaney, so that must make his opinion have more merit. Oregon, Georgia Tech may be diamonds in the rough, but Navy, Army, Air Force, and any other team running an outdated scheme is proof that it doesn't work and that's why you don't see it being run all over the country like it once was. Stop ignoring the game has changed an entire generation later since success has been had in this state.
