I am not an apologist for Coach. We need to learn patience. 5 years was not unreasonable. Coach has shown he is willing to make hard choices with staff.  We have a couple of top 5 position/recruiting coaches in the country.   Coach knows this team better than us, and this will/would take time to correct.  However; pitchforks, rope and fire are in the fan's hands, and Riley's fate is sealed by weeks end. We are writing a lot of checks for exes.  Kinda sad.

    Yes yes you are.

The alignment of the defense simply was wrong. They also had 21 and 12 personnel a lot, which gives them 7 blockers for our 7 guys in the box. It's going to be very hard to stop a team like Wisconsin if you let them go hat on hat, because that's exactly what they want. The teams that beat them make them PASS the ball. Banker, for all his flaws, made Wisky do that last year, and Gerry got 2 picks.

When Gordon went for 408, Pelini did basically the same thing that Diaco did last night. I don't get when a guy is paid as much as he is doesn't understand simple football math.

If they're going to go old school and run it 30 times in a row, we should go old school and break out the 52 eagle and put the strong safety in the box, too. It isn't rocket science - you aren't going to stop the run if they have a blocker for every defender.

    yep

I think most people would be happy with Frost as our head coach but are suggesting we tamp down the hype somewhat. Regardless of his resume he is still inexperienced as a head coach and that warrants some caution. Not to say he won't do great here but you can't expect everyone to think his success will automatically translate to Nebraska. He would likely do a great job here but it would also come with its fair share of unexpected bumps, so it's best we don't give him too much credit before he's earned it.

well alot of people her give mike credit and he hasn't earned jack

I think you're the guy who said Nebraska is millions of light years from contention with no warp drive, so surely you understand it will take several Earth lifetimes before anything good can happen.

Hey Guy long time no pontificate, we are currently that far but the right person just might bring a hyper drive with him

No offense to you but I didn't really comprehend your post very well at all.

As far as my question I was just thinking if we wanted Frost so bad and he was staying put for 2018 it may be prudent to keep Riley so we can try and hire Frost at the end of 2018. In that scenario if we fire Riley at the end of this year, Frost may never come to Nebraska. Not that that is necessarily a problem if we hire a home run, but if the home run isn't out there it puts us in a bit of a predicament.

so you are advocating another yr of hopelessness

Tom Osborne was a confident man that spoke with confidence, calmness, assertiveness, he had his players attention and they bought in.

When you watch Scott Frost's pressers, his pregame speeches, etc, you can see a lot of similarities. Coach Frost believes in his system. He has confidence that what he does in practice and game prep will work and his players feed off of it. He has his team bought in already and they are play some amazing football. They are sound. They play hard, They play with passion. They continue to work hard to keep improvement. Every week you can see the improvement in that team. Against Cincinnati the offense scored on every drive and had over 500 yards of offense and they didn't play a 4th quarter.

I am a strong believer that Scott Frost would bring Nebraska back to it's glory. I'm not saying the will be a run like the 90's, but a contender for the B1G West every year is a realistic thing that Coach Frost can accomplish.

Coach Frost doesn't recruit just to get elite talent, he recruits players that will fit his scheme. He is a scheme coach. Belichick is a scheme coach. When he gets new talent for his team he looks at what they can do for his team and if they meet a need, not just getting the big name on the market to make a splash on the team. Coach Frost is like that. He recruited a speedy running back that is undersized but when you see him on the football field, there is no way that kid wasn't good enough for an offer from bigger schools.

Coach Frost leads the nation in scoring per game and he also has one of the biggest point differentials of the season.

Nebraska would be stupid not to hire Coach Frost at the end of this season. If Nebraska doesn't hire him at the end of the season, there will be other P5 programs that will come calling and that will likely mean he would be gone for forever and winning big at other schools. The time is now to offer Coach Frost the Nebraska job (at season end).

    Wisconsin rushing performances this year:

    Utah State - 234 yards, 5.2 ypc

    Florida Atlantic - 357 yards, 6.6 ypc

    BYU - 235 yards, 4.8 ypc

    Northwestern - 109 yards, 2.9 ypc

    Nebraska - 353 yards, 7.2 ypc

very very telling I said from the get go the O line  and defense were marginal but as usual I was berated

And this is one of those "there is zero way we should win this game" moments that Riley seems to be famous for throughout his career. You watch we'll beat either OSU or Penn State and we'll all be like "WTF?!"

    uhhhhhh no

I'm sick and tired of everyone pissing and moaning because we suck so bad. There are positives if you choose to seek them out and watching the huskers is still very enjoyable. Being on this site has almost become insufferable. Everyone wants to win but I'm not going to be in a state of hysteria over losing because there isn't jack s#!t I can do about it. Yall can be mad and sick and tired all you want, I'll keep rooting for the greatest program in college football win lose or draw and I'll have a great time doing it. When we are back on top I'll be happy to say I never left.

    define greatest please

Because for 25 years Osborne figured it out. We CAN'T consistently recruit top players that's why the walk on program was so strong it obtained the very best they could get. The weather in Lincoln is not so favorable for a pro style offense to sling it 35-40 times. Callahan failed at it, Riley is failing at it. Throwing the ball around like that ensures one thing, INT's or an incomplete pass on 2nd and 5 or 3rd and freaking 2. We went from recruiting fast and slim players on defense to stop spread offenses in the Big XII to the Big 10. We have no identity under Mike Riley. We haven't had an identity since probably 1999-2001. Solich was an awful recruiter, that was his downfall. The same can be said for Pelini.

Osborne figured it out, he had to commit to the run and be the most physical team there was and recruit speed on defense. Of course today, there's scholarship limitations and the elimination of the Proposition 48 rule. This killed Nebraska football.

We are limited, geographically, it is easier to find, recruit, and teach OL to run block than pass block as well. Why fix something that wasn't even broken to begin with??? The Pederson era and everything he did to destroy the program has to be undone. Perlman being gone as I've said in the past, is the best thing that's happened to the football program in a long, long time.

Green and Bounds made it clear, they'd like to return our football program to the consistency and level of success that everyone saw in the 90's. Sure, we won national championships but by God people were sh***ng in their pants to play us. This is what we need to get back. Our identity, toughness, brutality, hard work. We have a head coach who has no accountability or disciplinary skills. We have had nothing but coaches who coddle the players like they're babies since Frank Solich.

The players will hold themselves accountable and begin to compete at a high level when they have a coach that exudes these qualities. We don't have it and we have to get it.

Teams in the Pac-12 can execute what they do well because of, again geographical area, weather, environment, etc. most Californians aren't going to come play for Nebraska, no, they'll play for USC, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and others. The same can be said for Texas now. They can go to OU, Texas, or hell, the SEC and play for A&M. These teams do what they do well because of where they're located and how much easier it is to recruit there.

Wisconsin has been the Nebraska of the Big 10 like Nebraska was for the Big 8. Because of Barry Alvarez who is... Ding ding ding a Nebraska alum! Wow, look at that. A former Nebraska player who tries everything he can to emulate his program just like his Alma mater, walk on program, recruit the best OL they can find, a physical running attack and continuity on defense without changing much.

Nebraska used to be able to run 10-15 plays to perfection during our winning tradition days. Our practices were, like Mark Banker said about Iowa's practices, "a bloodbath."

These things worked for Nebraska in the past and again, why change something that wasn't broken to begin with? Nebraska used to have the best offensive and defensive lines in the country. We've paid the price for firing a 9-3 head coach in 2003. We lost our way. We've seen some of the worst defeats in our programs history since. We've had losing seasons including one under the current regime, and a poor start to this one. We've lost our way and now it's time to get it back for good.

    here here!

Wisconsin and Iowa are the definition of vanilla. Yes, they are good at what they do, but there is no guessing involved. Just line it up and be the bigger man. They don't have better athletes than us according to recruiting analysts. Let's go kick some ass in the back alley and stop talking about Wisky and Iowa already.

they are just way more physical

We can all keep saying that all we want but winning multiple conference titles and having consistent top 15 finishes over a decade span would be perfectly acceptable in my eyes.

UCF would beat Nebraska 100-0 right now on a neutral field.

Scott Frost would immediately be transported to Lincoln on a cloud of magical corn husks wrapped in transcendent glory, cherubim and seraphim flying about his glorious golden locks. Trev Alberts would meet him at the door of the stadium, go to one knee, and give him the keys of the program. The statue of Brook Berringer would wink as Scott walked by.

Mike Riley and Bob Diaco would offer themselves as human sacrifices in Scott's honor, but in his munificence he would grant them pardon, and they would live out their days telling stories in hushed voices of how they were the coaches who preceded Frost's triumphant return to Nebraska. Danny Langsdorf would never be seen alive again. Some say he took one look at Scott's playbook and vaporized in a puff of jealousy.

The Huskers would once again be the greatest team ever.  Tanner Lee would, under Scott's tutelage, transform into a Pure Option quarterback, and would lower his shoulder to deliver the blow on every play - even on handoffs.  Nebraska would end every game with the entire team looking straight into the camera, saying, "We want 'Bama," and they would mean it.  At the end of the season we would dominate the playoffs, and when it came time to play 'Bama, they would politely decline, claiming they had to wash their hair - but we would all know they were just scared of Scott's team.

Frost would win the Big Ten Championship an unprecedented 17 straight years.  Conference headquarters would move to Omaha (because it wouldn't be fair if it was in Lincoln).  All future Husker games would start at 1:05pm Central Time like God & Bob Devaney intended.

Scott will not retire, but at the end of his life he will voluntarily lay himself down at the 50 yard line, where his soul will gently depart his body, which will never decay.

knapp you have finally seen the light lol

I learned that we can beat weak opponents but we can't beat better teams...that is of course if you consider Oregon and Norther Illinois better teams than us because last I checked, Arizona state beat Oregon.

I also learned that we will not be able to compete against teams like Wisconsin, Penn State, Ohio State, and Iowa. If we played Michigan, they would also beat us. In other words, we are not anywhere near where we should have been by now. Mike Riley is a very nice man and he is probably a wonderful person but he will not be able to get us back to Nebraska glory days. We have become insignificant and no one expects us to compete for conference championships. National championships are light years away at this point.

millions of light yrs away with no warp drive.
