TBH it sure feels like Riley is coaching to save his job right now. Finishing with 7 wins probably saves his job, as long as he fires Cav and probably DL.
If they win 8, it might be just cav.
If they win 9, no one is packing.
you can sure tell it has been a couple of weeks since NIU how quickly we forget

OK, i missed the game and Illy isn't any power house, but the D obviously showed up and did a great job.
Let's assume we lose 2 or 3 more games, but we are close and the D plays really tough. If we "can" Riley, there goes Diaco, as the new AD picks a new coach and he gets his own guys.
Could it be Diaco and his defense play well enough to give Riley another year or two? Thoughts?
no and what would accomplish what?
Also that defense looks decent against the run but that is all

If Riley does survive this season (hey, it could happen), I'd almost bet the farm next year is a crash and burn with that schedule unless there is a miraculous turnaround in pretty much everything we do this year.
this.

Survives the season. Like the guy. My gut says he'll be gone after the season. I don't see them winning enough.
- They can't score 40-50+ points like so many teams do easily. Why is this so hard to do at Nebraska anymore?
- They invite defenders into the box with their bunch sets. And then attack the box. Ohhh, that's why.
- They don't dominate games. They play to stay in games. That benefits the other team.
- Special teams isn't so special.
- They don't create turnovers.
- Many other teams use spread formations to gain an advantage, and it works. It works against us, and we don't use it.
Hate to admit this but... Riley, Langs and Cavanaugh have turned us into Nebraska State.
yep

3 years ago: Any monkey could win 9 games at NU...9 wins are pretty much built into the schedule!
Current times: The Big Ten is a meat grinder, winning 8 games is tough enough, if Riley gets to 7 wins I say he should get another year...maybe even 6-6
my my my how the goalposts have moved

5) They don't want to give POB even a chance because they want to play Lee and if POB even went in for one series and played well, they'd be screwed.
could very well be.

Our offense in general is too predictable. We throw no wrinkles at the defense. Every team we've played seems to have a really good idea what we're doing, sometimes based solely on alignment. We can't seem to self-scout well enough to realize that and it's frustrating.
hmmmm I wonder who is responsible for that.

I agree. 3 games we saw no press (or blitzes/stunts) at all and it cost us games. Unsure if what we saw Sat is the actual way Diaco will run the D or what was the first 3 games. IMO, its odd we saw so many different things when we were missing several starters on D.
Regardless, if Riley goes (and I think he will be gone) this entire staff is probably gone as well. From the performance thus far, not a bad idea. I like the ability to recruit, but the classes are not much better than Bo's and for all the talent, there is no development...
absolutely agree

I am still undecided on Diaco, but hard to not see improvement. Regardless of quality of opponents, the D has shown improvement since the 2nd half vs Oregon. When you have your QB spotting teams points, it hurts. When your play calling puts you right back on the field, it hurts. One thing I like is the continued evolution of getting pressure. Today, although Rutgers, we saw a lot of stunts and blitzes. I also witnessed CB's playing press coverage! I really like the fact he is playing a lot of guys. Some due to injuries and some by design. He is building depth. Something Cav seems completely unable to or simply chooses not to......
Hearing/reading all the pre-season hype I thought the O would have to cover the D to keep us in games. Score often and a lot. 4 games in, I realize that the D will have to carry this team if we want to continue to win.
you finally saw that after the usual give em 10yards any time they want approach which will continue to cost us games
this guys D philosophy is garbage and how much are wepaying for this again$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I don't think that is in Diaco's defensive DNA.
He is zone coverage all the way...unfortunately.

While we lost a very ugly, disappointing game, I feel the Defensive performance got a bit overlooked. I know they gave up a touchdown at the very worst time, but giving up one touchdown and taking heat is like when people dog on the guy who missed the last shot in basketball that would have won the game. Yes, it is good to make every shot, but everyone had chances earlier in the game to make that last shot moot.
7 points in the last six quarters is pretty salty in my opinion, regardless of the competition.
Please don't try to convince me otherwise.....this is all I have to hang on to!
let go Grandpa just let go.

TO didn't win NCs every year.
In fact, your last paragraph pretty much sums up the first 20+ years of his HCing here.
I don't believe he mentioned NC lets start with a div

I say stick to the plan. Should be able to beat Rutgers with our base offense and defense, Whenever we play the big boys Penn State, Ohio State etc i say we pull out all the stops, go for broke, and give everyone a chance .Give a quick hook to anyone not playing well. Riley has a history of losing to crappy teams, and upsetting good ones . If we could upset a top ten team it might put this season in a whole new light.
He was brought in to win championships
would it make that possible?

I think this officially signifies that we are no longer in the upper tier of college football. We are completely irrelevant, a program with great tradition but no longer a powerhouse of any sort. We are Iowa, we are Minnesota, we are nobody. Time for a change, or this will be our future

A soft coaching staff. Remember when Gerry Dinardo was alarmed at how lazy our practices were?
That's the culture of this team. There's no accountability.
