  1. Recruiting is a numbers game. Sure, half of them didn't pan out (that's normal) - but that means with this class we still got 16 solid contributors, 6-7 were great. Bo's classes of 17-19 and consistently undersigning meant if he hit 50% of his targets (which he didn't) we still only got 8-9 contributors. Bo's classes usually included about a 40% transfer rate, a 30% hit rate, and a 30% miss rate - leaving us with 6-7 guys contributing. Look at that 2011 class we all thought was so great at the time. Out of the 11 4* recruits that made that class promising, 5 transferred, 1 never showed, 2 never managed to really contribute. On down that list you've got Pirman, Carter, Davie, Price, Allen and Bondi that never really got into the starting rotation. That leaves what, 6 out of 20 that held their own...out of what was supposed to be the anchor class for Pelini. This class is the standard of the era.

Stars correlate to potential, anyone that argues against that is being ridiculous. But ultimately it's about the numbers. You have to sign to the limit, we can't have 7 walk-ons earning scholly's in a given year.

Bo liked stars but he liked his hunches better. Callahan was the best recruiter we have had after Tom left. We shall have to wait and see on Riley, but the pantry was ultimately bare for him.

  2. Poor talent in the O-line has been a problem for several years, . Riley is working to fix that and I think Cav can get the most out of the young guys we have.

It all starts with the O line. Frank let it drift off into never land and it hasnt come back.

So I keep getting into the debate of what ZD's actual status is. I have been on both sides of the fence at one point. Some say he is cleared to play and others say he is still technically not cleared for any contact.

I know he was green shirt for 2014 spring game but the green shirt came off during fall camp and he had no issues with contact according to the article I read. In 2015 he was playing in spring game, no green shirt and he was listed on the depth chart.

So whered does he stand? I was still under the impression that we were honoring his scholarship and allowing him to contribute in practice, but had no real intentions of actually putting him on the field due to concerns over his concussion history.

Any real information would be appreciated.

He was in the spring game...

Yes, I stated as much in my second paragraph.

I underlined a sentence, it did not come out.. how did he play if he was not cleared. He must have been cleared to play at that point in time.

Wish we could of kept Cally for 1 more year...he was in the process of signing a top 5 class that ended up producing stupid amounts of NFL guys on OL and QB spot.

No. He basically had "his team/guys" by year 4. And he failed miserably.

I thought Bo did really well with Callahoot recruits. When he ran out of them is when he started the down hill spiral on run defense.

  6. I really have no idea if Coach Frost will ever return to Nebraska. He has to win to even have a chance. He is in a hot bed of recruiting, if he wins there, the Florida schools and the SEC will want him. Leaving that area for the Midwest and trying to recruit to it, might just be a little much.

No one knows. Might end up being, no chance at all. Coach Riley might start winning and we all fall in love with him. I sure hope that happens. Nebraska needs to return to winning, and not a better guy out there to see become a winner at a past their prime blue blood.

I say we forget about it, until it even becomes a slight possibility. Now it is so far over the horizon it is not funny.

Ding ding ding we have a winner. Do not forget that UCF went 0-12, plenty of work there

  7.

4.29: Yards per carry allowed by UCLA’s defense, which ranks 70th nationally. In conference games, it was worse — 4.46 yards per carry. Again, Nebraska will have an opportunity to prove it wants to run the ball. The Bruins have one of the best pass defenses in the nation, in a league that knows how to pass the ball. NU needs to run the ball.

He still has a game, cant say much more, has to ride the horse that brought him there

There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out in this game.

I think that UCLA will have no problem piling up points against NU's D. I think Rosen picks Banker's D apart. The only way NU keeps it close is if the offense keeps scoring with them, like NU did against Michigan State.
There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out. Thinking we'll lose, yes.

Right. No basis whatsoever to think the Huskers will get blown out. Just like back in August when there was no basis whatsoever to think the Huskers would have a losing season.

How do you figure? We hadn't played a game yet with the new staff.

We haven't been blown out this year. We could get blown out by UCLA but nothing that has happened this season indicates that will happen.

The Miami game was a blowout for 3 quarters, and then they went brain dead, and let NU back in it.

Purdue was also a blowout, until NU put up some late points in the 4th quarter. It's a fallacy to say that NU wasn't blown out in any games this year.

That shows spunk and desire,,fighting back

  9. There was plenty of room for improvement in Bill Callahan's offense. And in Bo Pelini's offense. And now in Mike Riley's.

But it is utter madness to ignore the huge, historic drop off in the Nebraska defense during most of this stretch.

The defense went out and earned the right to be criticized. No idea why some here take much more comfort blaming the offense.

(I'll save you the time: I understand how offensive turnovers and stalled drives make it tougher on a defense. But that excuses next to nothing in terms of the actual problem)

Pelini couldnt stop the run after Crick and Suh left. Case closed.

Did you really wonder why a stable of mules didn't work when trying to win the Kentucky Derby?

Didn't Callahan V.1 show that a pass happy, West coast style offense not fit I Lincoln?

Looks like Callahan V.2 is doubling down on the stupid.

It wasn't Callahan's offense that got him fired.
One of the great fallacies is that Callahan ran an effective offense. More times than not, it was offensive failures that led to defensive blow ups. Sound familiar? Look at the Purdue game this year.

Do you carry a little red mao book too? Go back and look at the stats from the Callahan years and early Bo years. It was the defense stupid....

Incorrect. Everything was wrong with Callahan V.1. Remember USC?

    CM is 100% correct.

It's funny how those that militantly defend Callahan V.2 also seem to wax nostalgic about Billy C.V.1.

Guess you arent interested in facts. shrugs. All you have to do is look.

  11.

I see this as a 10 win season.

way too much sh#t to fix......7-5 would be about right.

So if Nebraska had C.J. Beathard this year at QB what do you think NU's record is? I'm saying we are playing the the B1G championship game instead of Iowa

Fix the QB and you fix this team

YEAH that is the truth. chuckleshuffle

  13. A true frosh becoming a starting QB is very rare. Has to be something real special. The only frosh QB I can recall taking over the starting role @ NU in 50+ years was Touchdown Tommie(may have been a RSFrosh), and we was special. I doubt POB is that special.

OMG,,,does anyone think RIley is an idiot. Double or triple down, get some Juco's. Tommy talks a great talk but his 36 picks in 31 speaks volumes.

  14.

Not sure what article you guys read, but that actually eroded even more of my confidence in Riley. This says it all:

It doesnt mean Riley, when reviewing the 2015 season, is satisfied. When asked if he thought Nebraska would finish 5-7, Riley said, Probably not.

"Probably not"?!?! How about, "Hell f'ing no!" Jesus, this guy went into the 2015 season thinking 5-7 was a real possibility. Nebraska is going to go anywhere until Charmin pulls his head out of his ass, starts benching malcontents, and shifts to a power-run offense that relies on the run to setup the pass, not the other way around.

Nebraska doesn't have a ton of depth. A 5-7 season for a team with very little depth is ALWAYS a possibility if key players get hurt. Teams with little depth are similar to NFL teams. Look what's happened to the Patriots since Gronkowski got injured.

Nebraska's depth is as good or better than almost every team in the conference.

MSU had 3 true freshmen playing DB a lot of this year. People are flat wrong if they think NU wasn't talented enough to continue winning 9 or 10 games, at least, per year.

If the players would have bought in before Michigan St, we likely would have won 10. It was a transition year ya know.

Bad luck more than buying in

  15.

Where is the game where we gave up 400+ rushing yards to one player through 3 quarters? Or 60+ points? Or a 20+ point blowout?

We're really grasping for silver linings here if we're pointing at zero blowouts as a success when this team lost to Pur-f******-due.

And it was 42-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The whole 4th quarter was garbage time.

    You're right.

Through three quarters our defense gave up 6 touchdowns, on drives starting on their 23, our own 16, our own 22, their 20, their 16, and our 19.

21 of those 42 points came on turnovers with 22 or less yards to the endzone.

New QB on the road, never started a game before had nothing to do with it, nor did his 4 turnovers. Right?

  16. I have seen a lot of posts from people giving A LOT of credit to Mark Banker for making adjustments and improving the D. Yes, the Blackshirts did play well against Rutgers and Iowa, to me, 2 games isn't a trend. If it is, why did it take 10 games for Banker to finally make necessary adjustments with this defense.

Below is a chart (sorry for the formatting, I guess it's impossible to paste a picture in from Excel) that shows the points and yards given up by opponent this year. It also shows the average PPG and YPG for that opponent and their national ranking. The season started out like a dumpster fire against BYU, Miami, and So Miss, when NU played the best offenses it would face all year. Even when NU got into conference play, teams didn't have much of a problem moving the ball on NU. I can give credit to Banker for allowing fewer points than the yards would imply, but the defense constantly came up short this year. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, given the team's record. The big thing to take out of this is how bad the Big Ten West offenses are. Wow!!!

Points Avg. Points Ranking Yards Avg. Yards Ranking

    BYU 33 34.2 39 511 428 46

    S. Alabama 9 24.8 95 332 360 102

    Miami 36 28.9 65 511 401 65

    So Miss 28 41.7 9 458 535 8

    Illinois 14 22.7 102 382 373 89

    Wisconsin 23 27.1 80 469 377 82

    Minnesota 25 22.6 103 366 357 103

    Northwestern 30 20.7 111 333 333 115

    Purdue 55 25.1 93 457 369 94

    Michigan State 38 33.4 44 491 399 68

    Rutgers 14 27.1 80 259 377 83

    Iowa 28 33.7 41 250 404 63

    Total 27.8 401.6

psssss....the offense put the defense in bad field position many times. It is not as simple as adding up numbers. The defense played much better in the second half.

  17.

Not discouraged tbh. Play like we did the last 3 games, minus the TOs of course, and we can compete for the conference right now. Hopefully upgrade the talent at some positions and we got stew going.

As disappointing as this season was as a whole we were much closer to competing with the top of the league this year than in recent years.

There really is no truth to the bolded, see Purdue and Illinois.

If wonder boy does what the coach says, you could cross off the Illinois issue and if TA had been well enough to play,we would have only had two picks instead of four..cough cough..

  18. To me the worst part is that NU has the better players but the worse staff

OMG,,KF was on the hotseat after last season. Their success is due to casting off a very average QB and replacing him. The difference between us and them is ball protection by the QB. One more pick and Tommy is tied for the most picks in football. Guess that game off helped out in that category.
