  1. I was watching some 90s Husker games on YouTube and I really miss the bigger shoulder pads. They just made players look more intimidating, especially with the jerseys that were not skin tight. I understand the reasons for smaller pads and tight fitting jerseys, but Mackovicka looked pretty scary running through the line with big pads (and the neck role). Lineman look funny to me with the huge bodies and teeny little shoulder pads.

  2. Gates leaving is good for the program. This is the type of player that can be a cancer to the team. It can also destroy the morale of players behind him who busted their butts in the weight room and at practice to move up the depth chart, only to see this guy slack off and get smoked during the games. This is not hate, it is reality.

  3. After watching Gate’s sometimes pathetic efforts during games this year, I am shocked anyone would draft him.

  4. Once again, I am on board with Depressed Husker (hopefully can change his board name toHappy Husker now we have Frost). The physiques of our offensive lineman do not demonstrate lots of hours in the weight room. I am not talking bulging biceps. But, there is a certain shape and size to arms that powerlifters and athletes who lift heavy have. Photos of not only the arms, but the overall physiques i.e. chest size, back width, thigh size of our lineman demonstrate something is seriously lacking in our strength program. Look at the photo Depressed Husker posted of the Pipeline compared to photos of our veteran lineman and it will tell you all you need to know. And no, you don’t need steroids to develop this type of physique that has true explosive power ready to be forced upon your opponent.

  5. I watched a certain offensive lineman give a piss poor effort most of the Northwestern game. More than 5 times a play was still in action and he just stood there and watched our running backs get tackled. He should have been pulled out of the game and had his helmet taken away. Give the next guy a chance to block. Freakin pathetic

  6. You are absolutely correct and come across as very knowledgeable. I am a retired power lifter and I have seen first hand how a simple and effective program of squats, deadlifts, and benching along with maintaining flexibility can create strong physiques that have the power behind them. Our lineman to not pass the eye test when it comes to these 2 things. Something is not right.

  7. Thank you Depressed Husker for this topic. I post maybe once a year and started a post last year on the same topic about Nebraska’s poor strength program. I was ridiculed by other posters that said to “cue the Rocky movie motif” and how stupid old school powerlifting is in today’s day and age. Well, here we are with our offensive lineman getting blown up again and again 1 year later. Go figure.

I feel like this is another excuse to help the fans feel better about another poor season

This is gonna come across as harsh, and I mean it that way. You're a sorry excuse for a fan or a human if you don't understand how 18 year old kids can be impacted by tragedy and keep playing at a high level, plus go to college.
    Go kick rocks
Don't dare say anything NM11046 disagrees with. He has a tendency to be overly dramatic.

  9. Weak, out of shape, not solid - fat. I think in the thread it was comments like "Look at their arms - they aren't defined" "How many bellies do you see hanging over the belts of the 95' OL/DL vs. today's OL/DL" etc. The talk was all about how they're soft, don't care about being in shape and that the coaches are ok with that.

Do you ever try providing coherent replays instead of weak smarmy sarcasm? Or really offer anything constructive to a thread you disagree with? Or just not capable?

  10. I'd like to add the following that I've seen here recently:

    • We aren't tough enough
    • Our locker room is too showy
    • We need old rusty weights and a dirt floor in the S&C area
    • We aren't big enough
    • Our lineman are jelly
    • We are not quick enough
    • We waste our time on home visits if a recruit doesn't commit

Give it up with the dirt floor and try opening your mind to what is being said. Keep trying

  11. I feel things are getting off track on this thread. The main point of starting this thread is that NU is soft as far as strength training and it is obvious when watching the games as well as when the coaches are also saying the same thing. There are no narratives that are trying to be "fit" here.
