Yeah, Nebraska tried Gerry at LB...he's not tough, or physical, enough to play LB.

    He's Charmin. A soft, weak, half-speed, player.

Sorry fellow Nebraska fans, I'm just not a Nate Gerry fan. I think he embodied and carried forward for two years, every thing wrong about the former coach.

If he excels with the Eagles, terrific, I'll congratulate him. But I'll never root for, or like, him as person or player.

Where did you get the impression he "embodied...every thing wrong about the former coach"? I'm asking seriously because I never saw anything like that mentioned by other players or media. And the team voted him as a captain last year, something I doubt would have been done if he personified all the negative of the former regime.

  2. May not be percentage rate but it would seem that the entire Big Ten has fabulous numbers if there is the indication that 970 out of 1000 (97% roughly?) are completing their college years successfully, whether or not graduating, that has got to be far above the same number of the student body in general or as compared to non-athletes.

All things considered, the student athletes have significant advantages over the non athletes and should do better (free or dirt cheap cost means less work demands), typical 5 years to get a 4 year degree, many assistance and tutoring, etc programs and so on. But, it is quite remarkable nonetheless.

I would suspect that NU numbers may be somewhat lower due to the abnormally high numbers of transfers which may follow with a coaching change so it might be interesting to compare NU to other programs with a similar coaching change as opposed to just all schools. I assume that players leaving for another school will be a negative impact on the 'score' calculations. However, all those things being considered, I would of course like to think the number should return to a near the top of the country range in the next couple years, IF the department is putting its full efforts into academic and athletic success as has been the historical norm for NU.

The APR is not percentage, but point, based. The multi-year average score for all FBS football programs is currently at 966, according to the NCAA. All the B1G schools earned higher marks than the average, though footfall on the whole is the lowest graded sport in terms of APR in both men's and women's sports.

A transfer student counts as -1 if they were academically eligible at the time of transfer, or -2 if they were academically ineligible.

  3. I think if you take Tanner Lee's numbers at Tulane, Riley's history at Oregon State, the last two seasons at Nebraska and the returning talent for 2017, you could end up with the same numbers as a guy who just makes sh#t up.

I think you're right. We should all take a recess until the end of December and pretend like half of this board's discussion isn't speculative nonsense meant to wile away the hours of our ever sadder existence...

Or we could have fun trying to predict how our QB will fare this upcoming season in a new and unfamiliar system, based on what we know and hope to have happen, while engaging in friendly conversation with other fans of our shared team...

    Whichever you prefer.

  4. I think Riley has the cool grandpa vibe going, whereas Harbaugh mostly comes across as the dad who tries too hard to relate to his kids, yet still somehow pulls it off (even if it rubs outsiders the wrong way). What is appealing about them is vastly different, but both of them know exactly who they are, what they are doing, and what persona connects to the kids they are trying to bring to their campus. Each of them are capable and willing when it comes to spanning the generational gap, just with different styles.

  5. Typically, guys that break 3000 are either really good or playing from behind, so an over on that could be seen as good or bad.

The 64% completion would be over two points higher than the top QB from the B1G last year. But maybe that speaks more to the lack of quality QBs in the league?

  6. Saw some predictions cropping up in a recruiting thread regarding Tanner Lee's passing stats, so I decided to start a separate thread here. After doing some (light) research, I came up with over/under numbers for the 2017 season using ESPN stats, assuming Tanner Lee stays healthy:

    2700 pass yards

    59% completion

    23.5 TD

    11.5 INT

    For reference:

The pass yards, completion percentage, and touchdowns would have ranked fourth among 2016 B1G quarterbacks. The interceptions would be fourth most among the same group.

Nebraska's 2017 opponents' defenses averaged 12.33 interceptions on the season, or roughly one per game.

The most pass yards by any B1G QB: 3614

    Best qualifying completion rate: 61.9%

    Most touchdowns: 29

Personally, I land on the optimistic side of the numbers, but I'm curious where everyone else would put their money.

Putting all our eggs in the Grant Gunnell basket.

Risky, but you have to believe GG will feel awfully flattered. Hopefully it's enough.

I would rather not rely on the flattery a 16 year old kid feels in regards to how to operate a collegiate football team.

Dude, You and I have no clue how to operate a collegiate football team. But, I do know that part of recruiting is making a recruit feel WANTED. Nothing says we want you more than, Hey, we aren't taking a QB in 2018 and you are the only offer we have out for 2019. Enough said.

Tell that to Nick Saban that started a RS freshman at QB in the National Championship and still signed 2 4 star QB's in 2017. This type of flattery will bite teams. Only the best teams know that and sign QB's every year.

Ohio St has 4 QB's ahead of their 2018 5 star QB. Didn't stop them.

Clemson signed a 5 star QB in 2017 and has a commitment from another in 2018

I could list more but you get the point. You don't skip on QB's in any class anymore.

I'm not saying we should skip one, but I trust coach riley more than I do your advice.

It's not advice. It's an opinion based on the fact that much better teams than Nebraska don't skip on QB's.

We offered a kicker a scholarship but he's going to wait until 2019 for a QB? Sorry. That's not a solid plan.

See how you feel when we need a 47 yard kick to win the game against Wisconsin or something like that.

See how you feel when your QB gets you in range for a 17 yard kick to win the game.

Not trying to be a prick, but is a 17 yard kick even possible?

No, but a 17 yard punt is. Just ask Caleb Lightbourn.

It's gotta be a DT that committed. McShane used the X blackshirt X emoji, which represents our D-line. He posted the same thing on Deontre Thomas' twitter last night about signees and recruits buying into the program.

Regardless of who it ends up being, I'm glad the momentum continues. The faster this class fills up, the more pressure on recruits to pull the trigger.

    So, Avery, Perkins, Thompson, Carson?

Avery. Others project as OLBs/DEs, and have said they will wait on decisions (either after their season or NSD). I feel like Avery has been a Nebraska lean for awhile. But it's speculation on my part, so take it with a grain of salt.

  10. Just a joke. The only way I would watch that game again is if I was forced...

I'm on your side in this argument, but looking at Lee's history it's tough to see how much of a " threat" he can actually be as a runner, even with a solid passing attack to assist him.

  11. Didn't we play a team in the past five years that had a non running QB have 2 carries that went for like 125 yards against us - with either one or both being TD's. If you don't think the pass can setup the QB run then go watch that game

    Ready to watch

Gebbia isn't anymore of a runner than Lee is and they called his number in the spring game and he had a beautiful sprint out for his first TD in front of our fans. Great to keep the D on their toes .

There were also no blitzes in the spring game against a pretty soft looking defense. These guys are both very average QB's running wise at best. Also with Gebbia's frame the thought if him running around against even a decent defense is frightening.

Good thing they won't be running it every play. That's the whole point. They aren't scramblers so a QB run in the right place can catch the D off guard. Lighten up man, just because the spring game defense was vanilla doesn't mean that play can't be used as an example to show where we may use the QB run game and how it can still be effective without a RB playing QB

I agree with you that it can be used effectively near the goal line, especially when the defense isn't ready for it. We saw that a couple times during the spring game, and defensive scheme aside, it's a good indication of how the coaches are willing to utilize every weapon available to them on offense. That said, when you have a gun in one hand and a sponge in the other, you can't throw the sponge and count on the element of surprise to compensate the damage.

  13.

Lee has one game in his career finishing with positive rush yards, to go along with zero rush tds. Not sure how threatened opposing d's will feel about qb runs.

I'd say, that's exactly where we want them. :)
agreed! I'll bet we see at least 1 qb run fool the defense this season

It will fool their defense, our offense, our coaches, everyone, even Lee. No one will see it coming.

Seriously though, he did have a touchdown pass in the spring game where he kept the defense off balance by rolling out and threatening to run it in. For now, I'll stick with blaming Tulane's ineptitude for his lack of production on the ground until we have evidence of what he can do here.

    Whose this for

Probably Petit-Frere, OT out of Tampa (813 area code). Petit-Frere translates as little brother in French, which, coincidentally, it looks like coach Cav is smuggling his little brother under his shirt in that pic... must be practicing ways to work his way around the new clear bag policy.
