He has the speed and athleticism, the key that coaches will need to figure out is the ability to consistently put forth max effort every play. Since he is currently bigger, faster and stronger than the players facing him, he tends to slack off pretty often when on plays designed to get someone else the ball. I suspect his college coaching staff will pull the max effort out of him or he will not see the field very much.

All that said, he has some amazing potential at this stage in his life.

    Enjoyed your thoughts and contribution.

If you look at this last video that you see him blocking, I see a good TE type blocking there.  He also seemed to have been "all IN" on that blocking.  It's just my eye, but I can see him at TE, OLB [because he doesn't have that great speed in my opinion, it takes him a while to get up to speed] or at DE.  He would of course get slower at DE with another 40 pounds on him, but I think he would be able to keep a bit of quickness.

In it all ... yes, as you said, he will need good coaching and a mentality to be IN on every play.  Love to have him ... just not sure at this stage if he is a WR that gets open or could stretch the field.  He has a lot of growth in route running as I see it.

  2. My hope would be that we secure Malachi.  The more and more I watch his WR vids I just don't see the type of separation from what is perceived as inferior that would be needed/necessary at the next level.  Presently, it just seems to be his size that gets him a "window of opportunity".  Ya, we see that he for his size he is fast.  Yet, I don't really see the necessary speed to get open.  He may be fast in the 100 but he seems to lack the speed to really manufacture the opening [even at the high school level].

If it sounds critical, okay.  Yet, my thought is he might seem better suited at TE in college or as a DE or OLB.  I just don't think he is ever gonna have the quickness or speed to really create the space as a WR.  I think he could be a possession receiver type but again, I just don' t know if he could ever get open enough for the smaller window he would have in college.

I don't want to lose him as a prospect but for me he's got to be at another position other than WR if he is really gonna be productive.  By the way, I don't just think that would be true at Nebraska.  Really, wherever he commits I think it will be the same thing.  You can look at these past two videos, the prior one he's got a little guy on him and he throws a few moves on that kid and it's pretty obvious that he doesn't shake away that inferior kid at all.  He has the height and arm length to try to make the catch, yes, but he really doesn't create any sort of space.  In this last video he is just wide open and it isn't until after he gets running where you see how he might get a bit dangerous in open space.

Scott Frost fumbled. He struck out.

We can argue and debate about what he did and didn't do. "On and off the field".  Nothing would come as a surprise to me. The important thing is that he's been relieved of his responsibilities. And now,  I'm moving on to the next chapter in Nebraska football. No matter what the emotional investment is, he's in the past. History.

I don't have any reason to not trust Trev Alberts. In my opinion he did what was necessary. It's in his hands who he selects to lead our football team. He seems measured in his response and will be thorough in his search. He's got a sound set of characteristics he's seeking in the next Husker coach.

Mickey Joseph has experienced hardship and triumph. He's earned everything. He's principled, symbolizes maturity and has grit. He won't squander the opportunity and will do everything in his power for the team to experience successes.

Go Big Red! Full throttle ahead.

It really is amazing how 2 out of last 3 coaches at NU did all these horrible public things...but yet...not one picture.

Bigfoot should think about coaching at NU...no one would ever report seeing him again.

    This was grand.

Having gone through a divorce, it's amazing what "stuff" gets spewed.  I've got all the anniversary cards and Facebook posts saved of what a great Husband and Dad I was.

5 years later I'm a narcissist and my sons express it was a living hell to live under me and still don't talk to me.

It's fascinating to see how and what others see/remember.

Good luck to Scott. Enjoy your life.

Chinander doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of being on this staff next year.  But Mickey has his plate absolutely full at the moment with what he's just been thrust into I'm not sure that firing your defensive coordinator 5 days before the OU game is the right move.  And to think you're going to fire your DC and expect to do a 180 in the middle of the season is next to impossible.  I just hope he can make these guys play to the correct gap and get to the right zone, that would be a start.

    Yep.

It would be very unfair for MJ to be judged, weighed and measured by Chins inadequacy.  Still, he will.

He is there because it's tough to replace him this week.  Like Scott, it's probably best to get from out and underneath Chins ASAP.  I hope that happens after the OU game.  I don't even care if we win that game ... Chins is not the guy to move forward with after his 4.5 years of work.

I'm with another poster, his brother would be an intriguing choice if MJ secures the head coach position long term.

It's all before him and us.  I'll be more than curious how and when our beloved Huskers get out from under this train wreck.

I was surprised to hear the things he said, and it also explains a lot.  After the disorganized clusterf#&% I watched on Saturdays the last 4+ years it checks out that the program he ran was a disorganized clusterf#&%.

I almost feel vindicated for calling some of the nonsense into question, but it's not time to gloat.  It's time for all of us to rally around coach Mickey and hope for the best.

    I so relate.

So much of life and football are "all the small things" that can add up to more negative then you think.  In the end, like myself, you thought the "things" weren't big but to others they were.  The "kicker" is that you also knew they were important but because of your own selfishness and self-centeredness you be/do what you want and then when your stuff hits the fan it's someone else's fault.

As a fan, all I can with is all the times I was given the "coachspeak" where Scott said all the right things but then in games the person most inept or missing on the details was him.  And yet, as in in Shawshank Redemption, "he's innocent [a lawyer screwed me]".

We were always one play away, one recruit away ... and everyone was always improving and getting better.  4.5 years later he has all his guys in the right coaching spots, all his players of choice, the easiest of schedules ... and all the same culture issues.

Scott abused me as a fan.  I don't really care to bash him ... but I also have no need to enable or protect him.  He was 16-31 and got a two-year extension at 8-13 [what coach deserves that or gets enabled by a fan base in that way?].  He should feel grateful as one given all the entitlement from his past accomplishments from Husker Nation.  The "greatest fans" will still welcome him and receive him as a son, regardless of his shenanigans.  He's very fortunate ... and got paid top dollar for doing only a portion of what was expected from his character as our coach.

    He will be just fine.

    Go Mickey and Big Red!

There was a fairly reliable poster on another site that had eluded to some of this quite some time ago but it seemed to get blown off.  There's a lot going around now and I hate to even keep repeating it because honestly it's a moot point and it makes me want to puke.  You can point to a lot of things that were red flags honestly.

It didn't matter that after going 8-13, Scott was given a two-year extension ... so regardless of what we hear, it really shouldn't matter.  Scott was privileged and given every opportunity.  That same entitlement will not be given to MJ.  Scott is very fortunate indeed regardless of what story ever comes to light.

Scott would go on to an 8-18 completion to his career after that "necessary" extension.  I won't really "ditch" on him ... God help the soul that feels any need to protect him.  He always abused me with his coachspeak.  I'll choose to remember him by his playing days ... all the rest of it can die and leave my memory.  :-)

I'm not sure what Mickey could have done at this point to impress anyone as a head coach. Recruiter, sure. I think a lot of us are hopeful and prisoners of the moment. Rightfully so, I mean this an exciting time.

Bringing Frost back just to fire him gives Mickey a great chance to provide a sample size and Trev a great chance to evaluate him. It's foolish to use his record this year to measure his success but he has a pretty high bar if he wants consideration as an actual head coach

... I bolded this ... as it should be.

Yet again, the standard for MJ can't be anything higher than what Frost was under.

So, allow me to play the devil's advocate.  There is really absolutely no reason whatsoever that Nebraska should not be 3-0.  None.

Indulge me for a moment ... if Scott were our coach presently and we were 3-0, then went on to go 6-3 or 7-2 ... and we were 10-2 or 9-3 ... everyone in the world would say that we had our coach going forward.

So, to then [or now] state that if MJ doesn't go 6-3 or 7-2 after taking over a 1-2 team who is horrid on D and has obvious issues in the OL, it just doesn't seem like a fair "bar" or "standard" for MJ to have to go 8-4 or 7-5 to be the coach.  If so, I'd be all ears to hear who thinks could come in today and starting on Tuesday could take this current team under these circumstances and go do that?  If Scott can get five years and contract extensions amidst such poor performance ... how is it fair to MJ [another Nebraska player/coach] to get such a strict/difficult/high bar?

That is just crazy to me.  If anyone deserves a dose of mercy and a bit of grace ... I would think it is MJ.  Scott got "grace upon grace" ... and really just wet the bed the whole time.  People actually believe there is injustice in how he was treated and let go.  Baffling.  I think I'm willing to now give MJ just a little bit of space to give it a go.

Honest question for you.  If Frost were fired last year, would you have put Mickey Joseph in your list of candidates to hire last winter?  I would love for Mickey to have a great rest of the season, but he still would bring a lot of unknowns as a head coach.  I think people wanting him as the full time coach are going off emotion.  The good thing is that Mickey will have a chance to prove himself over the next 9 games, but IMO he would need to go 6-3 or 7-2 over the rest of the season for him to be a solid hire for the full-time job.  I just don't like limiting ourselves to one candidate when we actually have a choice of 10-20 potential candidates across the country (which hasn't been true over the recent hires by NU).

I can't say that MJ would had been on my list last winter [he is now].  MJ seems to have a tough mindset and doesn't bloviate really any coachspeak as I see it.  It's a real big difference between him and Frost.  Frost was "just words".

I agree with you, MJ brings some unknowns.  For me, I'd take the "unknowns" over these next nine games and let him have a full audition, before I'd be willing to select another.  There is a reason TA brought him in with his particular title.  He now auditions to be considered.

I don't like or agree with your view that MJ has to go 6-3 or 7-2.  That is absolutely crazy to my mind.  If Frost gets five years and to establish all his coaches and players, how is that MJ has to take all of Frost's "best" and produce twice what Frost would do?  It's crazy!  Plus, Frost has to put up with Chins and all of him and his creation.

TA will be looking at MJ's intangibles, leadership and coaching decisions, amidst the fire he brings and the kids response.  He could very well win 4-5 games despite the "Frost Effect".  That would be amazing to me.  But to say he has to go 6-3 ?means he can only lost to OU, Michigan and one of Wisky, Minni and Iowa ... crazy.

In the end, I think TA will know what he has with Mickey in the time he needs to.  He will also be in full search mode.  FYI, I didn't say or imply "limiting ourselves to one candidate".  TA will do his full-out search for the best candidate and amidst it all he has MJ with all the full resources at MJ's disposal ... as it should be.  I feel sorry that MJ has to deal with Chins.  He probably has to keep him but there is so much he has to pinch his nose and stomach.  Chins could ruin any coach working toward being our next coach.

I am sure he will be talking to his brother, sure would be fun to be a fly on the wall.  Maybe even folks like Suh chime in and help with something substantial.  I see "the faithful" coming in to really try to redeem and rescue :bigredn:.  This year just got very exciting.

I'll close my thought by expressing that MJ has impressed me.  So, I'm allowing him to be the possible coach who is already on staff who can be "the man".  We have a Nebraska man at the top who I will be in full support and hopeful that he will do what Frost never did.  Let's not "pass" on him unless he proves unworthy and another substantial coach surfaces.

I'm not going to dig through the thread but has anyone talked about Shawn Clark the HC at App State?  I know he's at his alma mater but App State is one of the gold standards in terms of how to build a program at the G5 level.  They've churned out a couple of solid P5 coaches in the Louisville coach and the Mizzou guy.  App State is always extremely well coached and because App State can't recruit at a super high level, they are dynamite in terms of developing and identifying talent.  He's been the HC since 2019 and has gone 9-3, 10-4 and is currently 1-1 this year after knocking off A&M.

The highlights in various articles are his production in developing the OL.

    https://appstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/shawn-clark/1145

"Overseeing talented, hard-working offensive lines, he followed a December 2018 coaching change involving college teammate Scott Satterfield’s departure for Louisville by excelling as an aggressive offensive play-caller in a 45-13 bowl victory against Middle Tennessee. With valuable experience at his disposal, Clark was promoted to assistant head coach before the 2019 season with Eliah Drinkwitz in his first year as a college head coach.

In each of Clark’s four seasons coaching App State’s offensive line, with the Mountaineers earning four straight Sun Belt Conference titles while compiling a 43-10 record in that span, the line ranked in the top 25 nationally in both rushing yards per game and fewest sacks allowed. The unit was recognized by the Joe Moore Award as one of the nation’s top 15 offensive lines in 2018 and 2019, and all five starters on the 2019 line received All-Sun Belt Conference recognition."

  11. I've compiled my list a good 4-5 times.  The more I mull it over, the more my list looks like this:

    1.  Mickey Joseph

    2.  Mickey Joseph

    3.  Mickey Joseph

    4.  Mickey Joseph

    5.  Mickey Joseph

Sure, do your "due diligence".  My hope will be that a former Husker QB great will bring us back to prominence ... it just wasn't "the Golden Child".  I'd be good with seeing what MJ can do over this season and the next before other options at this point.

I like the person of MJ and think that there is more "good" within his character and coaching that is worth exploring over any other current option.

Thankfully, we get another nine games to see what he can do.  As one who thought we could finish 5-7 all of it is still out in front of us and we can actually still have our best season yet ... with Frost out.

    I'm excited.

OU was always the first game of the season and even if 3-0, I felt we wouldn't know if Scott had accomplished anything.  It was always going to be what we did with those last four games.

So, MJ is my next coach and my guy moving forward.  In him I trust.  I'm just thankful I can now take the "K" out of Nebraska again.

One thing I don’t think people think about enough in regards to Chins defense philosophy is in regards to the opposing QB each week.

Chin plays things so soft and vanilla the first half, that QB’s are really able to get their rhythm/timing together.  And the more passes completed (however short they are) the more confidence a QB gets for later in the game.   I experienced this while playing in college and it’s a reason offensive coordinators usually get their QB a few nice easy throws early on.

If a QB gets pressure early on, sees some unique blitzes early on, then some doubt starts to enter in the mind and confidence can waiver a bit and that’s when you start to see some miss throws on completable passes.

Chin plays right into what the opposing team is hoping for, especially when they have an inferior QB.  That is so infuriating.

Yes, this is so "spot on", it's why I can't stomach Chins as any type of solution.  It's just his D.N.A.  Longer term, the best option is to get away from Chins.  He's like an assistant QB coach for the other team who builds up the opposite QB to his best version.  Chins does not strike any fear into any opponent/QB.

I think our starting O line has the talent to compete for west championships.

I didn’t say we were going to win the conference or playoff games. I simply said we have the talent to compete and win a west championship.

the D line is lighter in talent. But, there’s enough talent there for the front seven to be playing much better. Rewatching them, you will see that many of the breakdowns are players not doing the right thing. Such as an LB filling the wrong hole. That doesn’t mean that player doesn’t have talent to fill the hole. He just filled the wrong one.

You really need to get on staff.  If it's as easy as you state we should get you on staff as a GA and fix this.  It sounds like there is no reason to paying any big dollars to fix this, you've got the answer to get the player to either make a hole or fill it.

We were always told we were just one player away.  Now, it's just breakdowns that are all fixable.  These guys were all-world in the off-season, now they can't make any improvements against lessor opponents then they practiced  against for months.

Man, Scott really did get screwed.  Poor fella.  Wonder what the hell TA was doing getting rid of Frost now.  Geez.  It's just a gap thing.

This, moreso to the DL. I think there are things you can do on the OL that can pay immediate divdends...whereas our DL, you can't just magically learn half-man on a rush in the immediate term, of course they could just say to the ends "get up field" but unless you understand it, our guys will just get washed by. Additionally our hand fighting (getting half man, hitting arms, etc) is poor. Very robotic

It's not that I disagree ... it's just that the only OL I can point to worth anything only gave us one decent season before he moved on.

Scott got his OL coach, and we heard all sorts of new coachspeak about really firing off the ball finally.  Still, even with his choices for players and for coach, through the three easiest games we looked at a minimum adequate in the OL.  I don't think that the OL is fixed yet, but perhaps there are a few "tricks" to mask the deficiency.  We are all waiting.  If you've got "immediate dividends", please contact the coaches and get your expertise to them.  They could use that about now.

  16. Hell, I'm more than excited about the possibilities for this season now.  Even when it comes to this thought of "identity", if the mindset shifts to moving the guy in front of you then we might just find our way with MJ.

I don't think there are any excuses.  We can win this game with OU.  MJ is our guy.  We may lose ... but it won't be without MJ giving his best.
