How many media types and coaches said Mike Riley was a good hire as well?

Edit to add:  "If it's done...great hire by @Huskers getting Mike Riley from Oregon State!!"-- Kirk Herbstreit.

I was as lukewarm as anyone on Riley but Herbie's comments aren't necessarily wrong.  He spent a lot of years punching above his weight as OSU, and Riley's name was attached to a lot of jobs over the years including USC and Bama.  How many other "great" hires over the years have been disasters and how many "terrible" hires have worked out really well?  Sweeney and Orgeron are pretty much the poster boys for that.

If we're still seeing the same stuff after a full class under Frost, then I'll fully agree in the need to make some changes.  But there's been a lot of positives this year too, and a lot of what is going on really can't just be placed on the coaching staff.

I'm assuming that was Bo's last game. And if so, it stands to reason, plenty of valid criticisms and frustrations with Bo's accomplishments aside, we didn't know how good we had it winning close ones under Pelini, especially after he got settled in. Look at the W-L record in all these games decided by a score or less or where we were trailing any time in the 4th (from memory):

    L Va Tech 30-35

    L Texas Tech 31-37 OT

    W Colorado 40-31

    W Clemson 26-21

    L Va Tech 15-16

    W Missouri 27-12

    L Iowa State 7-9

    W Oklahoma 10-3

    W Colorado 28-20

    L Texas 12-13

    L Texas 13-20

    W Iowa State 31-30 OT

    L Texas A&M 6-9

    L Oklahoma 20-23

    W Ohio State 34-27

    L Northwestern 25-28

    W Penn State 17-14

    L UCLA 30-36

    W Wisconsin 30-27

    W Northwestern 29-28

    W Michigan State 28-24

    W Penn State 32-23

    W Iowa 13-7

    W Wyoming 37-34

    W Northwestern 27-24

    W Michigan 17-13

    W Penn State 23-20 OT

    W Georgia 24-19

    W McNeese State 31-24

    L Michigan State 22-27

    L Minnesota 24-28

    W Iowa 37-34 OT

The issue is most don't remember the close ones.  That Georgia game, for instance, was a really well played and hard fought win.  They remember the times OSU, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc were able to hang 40+ points and broke school and NCAA records doing.  And I've never been able to figure out why they happen.

It's as if the program freezes up in big games.

  3. Honestly this season still has a lot up in the air.  Wisconsin and Iowa are still unknowns until they start conference play.  Northwestern seems down but they always cause trouble.  Purdue has a solid win this weekend after blowing it against Wisconsin.  We'll see how good Maryland really is in the next few weeks but we have to go there and that's going to be a challenge.  I think what will be most important for this season is staying competitive in every game and not getting blown out.  There have been far, far too many of those over the last few years.

I don't really want to put a number of wins on the board but I think 6-6 or 7-6 and a bowl at a minimum is still a realistic goal for the team.

There is no Bo Pelini curse. It really started with losing Texas at home in 2006. Next year it was getting crushed by USC.

15 years of "Nebraska is back"  talk.  At some point, you are what you are.

And really, Nebraska hasn't had a big win since getting crushed at Colorado in 2001.

The media is part of the problem.

So while I don't want to call it a course per se, I would say there was a marked change in the program under Pelini after the A&M fiasco.  But you're dead on with the rest.  The program has become a lot like how a lot of folks mock Notre Dame- especially before Brian Kelly really turned things around.  There's a lot of hype due to the name but not so much on field success.
