Let’s say Wisconsin is currently looking for a coach and all of the likely candidates are the same ones we’re debating.   As a Huskers fan, which one coach would “worry “ you most if they were hired by Wisky?

    Anyone not picking Urban Meyer?

Yeah, Jim Leonhard will assume that program in the next 2-3 years and elevate it. Guy is going to be an absolute star there.

I just wish we could get Chris Petersen out of retirement. The guy is one year younger than Urban.

Talk about an amazing fit in Lincoln.

Same. Washington and Boise have both come open since he's retired and he didn't bite at either so he must be at peace with his pace of life.

Only way I see him coming back to coaching is at the FCS level up in the PNW. Guy's big on pace and family.

Yes but a lot of Husker fans would say no bc thats too much or high risk high reward. If you were going to pay that much then what you speak of would have to be guaranteed results.

Nobody would say no to a guaranteed 10-2 in two years. The issue is that there is absolutely no way that can be guaranteed. Nick Saban couldn't guarantee it.

Simple. Anybody that is not named Urban.

Since Trev explicitly stated character as #1 in what he was looking for in the new coach that automatically rules out Meyer from the get go. And he is the only coach on the planet capable of turning this ship around.

The Meyer mob knows exactly who Trev is considering and are none too happy with the choices he has made since anybody not named Urban less than or equal to Mike Riley by default. Regardless of their record or the programs they may have rebuilt through the years.

In their eyes Trev is now on the hot seat and may not make it to Thanksgiving in which case their approved replacement can then name Urban as head coach (regardless if wants to come here or coach again at all).

Dude I am on board that Urban could do it but its hyperbole like this that makes the whole notion sound ridiculous. There are dozens of coaches out there that could do it over a longer timeline than Urban. Could he do it faster than most? Sure, if he's at the gear he was at in 2016. Is he? You and I have no idea. Does he even want to coach? If he does, why here instead of ASU or Auburn? Both easier recruiting jobs. You guys are assuming a ton with no real basis in reality.

In whose eyes is trev getting fired before thanksgiving?? Lol this is qanon-level fake insider nonsense.

Fickell's 2011 season as HC is somewhat similar to Mickey Joseph's 2022 season with the exception that Fickell was handed the keys to a ferrari and Joseph was handed the keys to a Ford Pinto.  Cincinnati was doing relatively well with the exception of the last year before Fickell was named HC.  Sounds similar to UCF don't you think?

No, it doesn't. Fickell has been there for six years and has steadily improved their depth. Frost was at UCF long enough to bring in a single recruiting class, essentially.

Fickell has had total command of the program for six years, or six classes, or two classes start-to-finish. His second, or this past year's made the playoff and hung with bama about as well as anyone did last year. They lost a ton of pieces to the draft and will take a step back this year, but every program goes through that cycle unless you're Georgia/Alabama/Ohio State and constantly reloading. Honestly, it's healthy cause it means your guys are developing.

Do you not think that we can beat Indiana, Iowa and Rutgers at least?

This team has significant mental and emotional hurdles they have to overcome before they can beat anyone. None of those games are as winnable as you think.

It's beginning to feel like getting Frost back was just an excuse for all the former Husker greats and former big timers to get together and have a huge party and not do anything remotely responsible or mature. It feels like they got back to their 20 year high school reunion dinner and just all agreed to stay and hang out for 5 years.

Well, this program HAS been run like a high school for the better part of a decade so that's not a bad read in hindsight.

It has to happen or Trev loses his job next year. It falls on him so if it’s an underwhelming hire Trev seat gets hotter then the pit of a volcano

There is absolutely no way Trev is losing his job next year unless he commits a crime on the job or there's a massive NCAA violation.

I’m thinking there has to be an announcement sometime before the Iowa game. We need all the time in the world to get a some what decent class put together for early signing period

Unless it's Matt Rhule no coach would leave his team prior to the end of the regular season.

We are already there. Fans might not want a slow build up but that might be what it takes.

I'm pretty positive we have an AD that understands that and doesn't care about short-term popularity. Guy talked non-stop about process improvement in his presser. It's definitely the direction he's going and it's probably the first time that's actually happening around here.

It's not about the defense getting better. It's about removing people that are poisoning the culture of the program.

If Mickey's firing someone, it's because keeping them on board would do more damage than letting them go.

Well said. At this point it's not about this year.

By all accounts, if you're on this team you haven't been practicing as much as you've been scrimmaging. The teaching style of this staff prior to letting Frost's guys go was "here's your technique, let's try it at full speed and correct it." I've been around a lot of great coaches and that's not how they operate because that's how you form bad habits. It shows up pretty evidently in tackling, footwork (think QBs and OL), hand placement (think DL/OL), alignment and assignment (LB's overpursing, Dismuke tossing DB's around pre-snap, guy's chasing motion men, being out of position on a 60-yard QB run, OL getting beat on stunts)

Firing Chins, Frost, Austin, Mario, and anyone else who's trusted these kids to out-talent the big ten sends them a message that their effort in relearning how to learn is appreciated for the rest of the season and going forward. It's not about this year. These guys understand that. This is a culture-first move. When Trev gets up there and says it's 'about the players' that's what he's talking about. It's not about keeping kids competitive this season, it's about wiping the slate clean and letting someone with championship habits start fresh instead of having to do this in spring ball.

I've said from the start that we have two options: 1) get a big name hire who can lure elite talent to Lincoln; or 2) switch back to an offensive philosophy (option) that makes Nebraska a unique brand and makes us the destination for kids who play a similar style in high school

When was the last time a big ten team had success with the option? Honest question, because it makes absolutely zero sense that those are our only two ways back to competitive football.

Talented kids don’t want to play for an option offense, they want to play in the NFL.

Yeah, the timing might be bad for this year in the MAC.  Probably should have thought of it sooner.  Urban Meyer was in his first year at Utah and was one year out of the MAC when they fired Solich.  Likely would have been able to land him then.   He hadn't become the 'it' coach yet.  That happened a year later, and then everyone wanted him.

I don't want the guy cause he's got a ton to prove still but he's the only rising star over there. I've heard a lot of good reviews about his work and teaching habits.

Sun Belt has kinda become the coaching cradle conference the MAC was when I was working in football. MAC's really been a victim of recruiting exposure and camp circuits. Used to get some sick QBs that played at small HSes. Big Ben was one of a few dozen.

Then why are you even here? You must be a previous player post 97. Never say never. I hope one day someone quotes this post right here. I think a cinderella season is possible considering in a few years the playoffs will come to 12 teams. You think Neb would have not have a shot at it by pulling off an upset in the conf championship game finishing 11-2? I think its possible. It’s gonna take the right head coach and staff to pull it off.

    LSU had a Cinderella season.

It only took 8 first round picks grown in their backyard and the most incredible QB development job in history.

Auburn also had a Cinderella season. Only took the greatest athlete in CFB history.

Nebraska isn’t going to have a Cinderella season. Those don’t exist for us.

None of the name brand coaches at major programs being thrown around here are coming.  This is post-Solich deja vu.

Trev needs to find another lesser known hire who can succeed, like Alvarez or Ferentz, and his best bet is to go to the MAC.  Urban Meyer (Bowling Green), PJ Fleck (Western Michigan), and Nick Saban (Toledo), just to name some recent ones, were successful coaches there and moved on to the top of the profession.  Go to the MAC (or maybe the Sunbelt.)

Get off this star struck business.  Find the guy who will become the next star.

Theres one guy in the MAC right now (Sean Lewis) that would fit your criteria but I don’t think you need to go that far. Your larger point is correct though

I didn't say he was going to come here I said Nebraska should aim for a coach like him. He is a established head coach who has Utah ranked in the top 25. It hurts not to try to go get someone like him.

Curious who some guys ‘like’ Kyle Whittingham are

Kliff Kingsbury might be available soon

Nothing about Kingsbury makes me believe he’s cut out to be a HC. OC? sure.

On Rhule, guy is 5-16 in one-possession games since the start of 2020. Seems like he needs a year at the Saban Coaching academy to get his juice back.

Not sure who I would task to fix this situation but Mark Stoops, Chadwell, Rhule. 2 of those seem pretty unrealistic gets but who knows what big money can get us. Im sure there are other quality candidates

Don’t understand the love for Chadwell. Can someone enlighten me? The win/loss seems generous to his skills as a coach and his success seems least likely to translate among anyone that’s been mentioned.

It's three programs. Rhule did it once and then did it again

Not arguing against Rhule, I’m a believer.

My point was that Iowa State is a far more difficult place to take to that high gear than Baylor. Temple is even easier since every program in the AAC is at risk of losing their coach as soon as they show progress. I see both guys as proven program builders.
