This is what you said.  The new bar is a coach that can get A team to A bowl game.

That means you think fan's new expectations is A coach that can A team to a bowl game. There isn't anything in this statement claiming anything about this team....where they were when Joseph took over and where fan's long term expectations are.

You just stated that you think fan's expectations are just any coach that can get any team to a bowl game.

Now, your back peddling on that?

Well....you wouldn't be happy with just making it to a bowl for Joseph.....so, then what's the next step that you would be happy with?

Honestly, I'd be very happy as a fan just to make it to a bowl this year given the circumstances. That does not mean I'd be happy long term with MJ as our coach. Would be a somewhat similar situation to Luke Fickell and Ohio State in 2011. He did a fine job patching that season together as an interim and guess what...he even took them to a bowl. Ohio State was smart enough to know that didn't just automatically qualify him to get the full time gig going forward as there were other, much more qualified options out there and tOSU had a higher bar than "just get us to a bowl and you're our guy"

(and yes I know Ohio State wasn't in as bad a shape when Fickell took over as Nebraska when Mickey took over)

It isn't crazy at all.  Wins are the measuring stick by which all coaches are evaluated.  Last year is a great example imo.  Nebraska was actually a pretty dang good team last year.  It didn't matter in the end that we had a bunch of close losses and looked like the better team against eventual top 10 opponents because at the end of the day, we lost those games.  If MJ can figure out how to win 4 of the next 7 to get us to a bowl game, he deserves a shot to build on that in 2023.

Why? Because he's already here? If he was coaching anywhere else and won 4 of the next 7 in a similar situation, he wouldn't even be on anyone's radar. I'm not saying I want him or don't want him. Of course, I'll get behind him if he ends up getting the permanent gig. I just think it's absurd of fans, after one sloppy win against a pretty bad Indiana team to be ready to hand him the reins of a blue blood football program as long as he can scrape together 4 more wins. But, knee-jerk, week-to-week reactions from fans is the way these things go I guess.

Oh boy.  So, you're only going to be satisfied this year if Joseph wins the conference?  Dude, this team was a mess with already two bad losses under their belts.  Georgia Southern beat us and they are sitting at 5th in their division....in the Sun Belt.  Let that sink in.  Joseph then took over the team with only one week to prepare for a tough rivalry game.  Then, won the next game.  Now, he can try to build on that.  Winning 5 more games would be a massive turnaround for this team and Joseph.

    Where did I say I wouldn't be satisfied? It's 4 BTW.

I get so tired of "oh boy have we lowered our expectations".  It's stupid to expect anything else.  Absolutely nobody is saying just making it to a bowl game is the long term goal that the coach needs to strive for.  But, fans have realistic goals for the rest of the season when compared to what the team was when he took over.

Again, being satisfied with making a bowl this year and having that be the bar to hire or not hire MJ as the next head coach are not the same thing.

I would agree that this team has more talent on it than just making it to a bowl game.  But, that's not the only thing affecting the outcome of this season.  5 of our last 7 games are against programs that have beat us regularly recently.  If he turns around and wins 4-5 of those.....that should be looked at as impressive.

It would be looked at as impressive. But, see above.

Getting this current Nebraska squad to a bowl game isn't the same as getting any ole team to a bowl game though. You really think over half the coaches in FBS could take over the program after GS and still take us bowling? Really? Because if you do you may be...well lets just leave it at that.

Maybe not over half the coaches, but with our roster and schedule, a large portion of them absolutely would. Or are we not allowed to use the same arguments as to why Frost was under-achieving to point out how ridiculously low that expectation is? I know I'm being extreme for affect, but winning 4 of the next 7 isn't exactly lighting the world on fire. And I also don't think that not winning 4 of the next 7 necessarily makes MJ disqualified as a candidate. I just think it's crazy to say, if he gets us to a bowl, he should be our coach...or if he doesn't, he shouldn't be our coach.

    Meyer

    Petersen

    Gundy

    Aranda

    Kiffen

    B. Stoops

All would be home runs and give Nebraska national credibility.

After these guys I’d say Fickell is a triple and probably Rhule too.  I think Fickell will end up in the B1G at some point.

Sanders is a unique wild card. He’s like stealing home. Something you don’t see very often.

To me Campbell and Leipold are two of the weaker candidates, single or double material. M. Stoops, Dykes, Patterson, and Mullen are somewhere In this category too.

I probably missed some.  Mickey’s throwing relief right now and it remains to be seen if he can close these guys out or if he gets knocked around the yard.  Too many baseball analogies!

Pretty solid analogies all the way around. I wouldn't put Gundy, Aranda, or Kiffen in the home run category though. If Rhule and Fickell are triples, Gundy, Aranda, and Kiffen are too. To me, home run would have to at least include having been to the CFP. That's not to say that's the only criteria, but it should be one of them.

Well 3 “people” laughed at your post and none of the 3 was me. Maybe you think it’s because it was funny? I think the reactions were for the idiotic take on the game. I’ll help out your rep and go make it 4.

okay dude, you may also need to google “laughing emojis”

1- I didn’t quote your post, I made a standalone statement. No goalpost to move.

2- Your post implied the only reason we won was because we were the taller midget. Wait, my bad, you didn’t “imply” that, you clearly said it directly and also said that anybody that couldn’t see that might be the shorter midget.

    Talk about moving goal posts:facepalm:
If/When you post bad takes around here, people will notice, call you out on it and laugh at them. Somehow that’s now my fault?

    1) you might want to google “moving the goalpost”

    2) you literally just tried to say you weren’t responding to me then when on to admit you were responding to me in the same post

    3) “people” didn’t call me out, you did…so I guess you need to google “people” too

Anybody that couldn’t see or admit that the team improved in multiple areas and ways might be a mental midget.

Did I say there wasn’t improvement? You sure like moving the goal posts to fit your argument don’t you?

You will be another one b!^@hing because the media never tells you the full story. Well this is the story. He has been ruled out at Nebraska by Matt’s choice. But heck …..wait for the official announcement if you want. Just giving you heads up so you can stop speculating on him but heck do it if you want.

Heck, I mean…he just lost to Kansas. So, heck…Iowa St can keep him.

He’ll go somewhere and tear it up again.  And we’ll all be here arguing about why we didn’t consider him.  I can see it now.  If it plays out that e, Hopefully it leaks that Trev did approach him, but he wasn’t interested.

What’s worse in that scenario…A) we are so dumb, we passed on the obvious top choice, or B) we are so s#!tty, he passed on us?

Rhule is definitely more likely. As far as what team he chooses, it very well may come down to the highest bidder.

Maybe. Can’t imagine that was the case when he chose Baylor over Oregon but you never know I guess.

I guess. I love Matt Campbell. I get the reservations, but when other teams desperately want a coach (USC, the NFL) I think it's a great sign

Are we sure either of those are actually true? Or is that just like, message board chatter and stuff? I remember his name being mentioned for USC about how it’s being mentioned for Nebraska now. And I don’t remember him ever being rumored for a head NFL job. Regardless, I’d hardly call either one “desperately wanting him”

  13. 1 hour ago, The Scarlet Pimpernel said:

Both Aranda and Rhule are high on my list.

Question is, which one is more likely? Aranda may think he’s set up just fine at Baylor. And they can/will pay to keep him if he continues to succeed.

I think Rhule is likely coaching college next year. But would he come to NU? Normally I’d say we’re likely to be the best college job available. However, when he went to Baylor, he turned down Oregon to do it. On the surface, everyone thought that was the dumbest move ever. Baylor was a complete s#!t show and Oregon was in really good shape. Can’t imagine Baylor offered thaaaat much more than Oregon (numbers were never disclosed). Rhule just said he felt Baylor was a better fit for him and his family. It was a head scratcher for sure. So, even if on the surface Nebraska seems like the obvious choice for him, he’s already shown he may not necessarily agree with popular opinion on those things.

That's how quickly a candidate's luster can fade. Once KU starts losing games Leipold's name will start to sink.

Boy you're not kidding. We've already seen it. Lots of people all in on Campbell a few weeks ago. Loses to Baylor, huge shift toward Aranda. As I sarcastically said a few pages back, people have a really hard time not being short-sighted and getting out of their comfort zones with these things. Let's just hope Trev's not one of those people.

If the want to keep the sellout streak at Memorial the should offer $1 beers for rest of the season

I'm thinking free 'til you pee. Could do it by section. Free beer until someone in your section pees. Keeps the sellout streak going plus keeps people in their seats longer and gives fans something else to think about besides the product on the field.

Living in the heart of SEC country, the name I've heard being tossed around as the most underrated coordinator in the SEC is Todd Monken.

Underrated coordinator? Or next big up-and-coming coordinator to watch out for as a head coach? Pretty big difference.

Someone call up Saban and find out who the next Kirby Smart is and hire him.

Hahaha, Saban doesn't strike me as the type to try to help other programs out. He'll either tell you Deion Sanders so Auburn doesn't get him or Bill O'Brien just to get rid of his sorry a$$.

Kirby is a Georgia alum and was the heir apparent there for some time. Saban didn't do anything to help orchestrate that.

I'm really hoping that Aranda is our top target at present.

    I thought you wanted Urban?

I got no big issue with Aranda, he might be fine. But he's not even the better of the two possible Baylor coaches. Matt Rhule is responsible for a lot of Aranda's success. What Rhule did at Baylor in the situation they were in when he got there was borderline miraculous. Not sure most people around Nebraska realize the gravity of how bad that thing was when Rhule got there. There was a reason he became one of the hottest NFL targets after just 3 years at Baylor. He and Aranda are the same age, but Rhule has FAR more experience, on both sides of the ball, in NCAA and NFL. And he's arguably got more possible B1G ties than Aranda. Outside of Aranda's 3 years as a coordinator at Wisconsin, Aranda hasn't sniffed B1G country. Rhule went to Penn State and spent most of his career coaching in B1G country. When comparing resumes, it's not even close if you have to pick one of those two.
