Funny thing is I'm not sure Kiffin is better than Rhule and I'm guessing at least a decent percentage of the fan base was against bringing urban.

I agree Urban was a stretch but I think Trev could have Kiffin if he wanted him and the boosters were willing to pay for him.

As far as the rest of your comment, grow up man.

Yeah I went a bit overboard but you've gotta admit the fans are wayyy over their heads for a program thats hasn't won anything in 23 years along with 6 straight losing seasons. If this was 2019 or 2020, we would never think Rhule would even bother coming here.

As far as I'm aware, TC flat out refused to allow even contacting  Kiffin or Urban, not that they'd even bother picking the call. They don't want fiesty guys who'd publicly call them out for meddling. For a long time, Leipold was the favorite because TC leaders like Dr. Tom favor "fiscal responsibility"  aka coaches who do reasonably well on a lesser budget. Thank God the Omaha boosters stepped in and threatened to cut their funding to the program if the upper management went the cheaper route.

So on the condition the Omaha guys would foot the majority of the bill, top tier candidates were contacted.  Fickell flat out said "thanks but not interested". Negotiations with Rhule broke down twice or thrice but finally Trev won.

  2. Per Greg Smith and Zack Carpenter:

“Dominoes are falling quickly in the college coaching world. Three coaches who have been mentioned as candidates for the Nebraska job – Mark Stoops (Kentucky), Kalen DeBoer (Washington) and Lance Leipold (Kansas) – all signed long-term extensions to stay at their current spots this week, with the news breaking on the latter two Tuesday night.

The moves are all pieces to a convoluted puzzle that Inside Nebraska has been putting together this week. The following is a report that we have compiled over the last three days, checking with several sources to get an accurate update on the latest developments in the Huskers’ search:

There has been a lot of talk over the last week about whether or not former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule is still in the running for the Nebraska job. Talking with multiple sources, we can first confirm that Rhule has been a serious candidate and the lead candidate for the Nebraska job. There is confirmed interest on both sides.

We are told by multiple sources Rhule has not turned down the Nebraska job. We can also confirm that no deal has been made with Rhule or any other candidate. In regard to Rhule: A snag was hit recently during negotiations, but that setback was not due to Rhule turning down the Huskers, according to multiple sources. That delay was caused by contractual issues centered around his buyout with the Panthers. Inside Nebraska is not ready to eliminate him as a candidate to become the next coach at Nebraska, but it would take more negotiations to make it happen.

We are nearing the goal line of the coach search, but there remains time to close the gap on any potential buyout settlements or salary offset language with Rhule.”

Meanwhile, Rhule, fired last month by the Carolina Panthers after a 1-4 start, has a history of success with reclamation projects (Temple, Baylor). Those were difficult jobs. He has to know Nebraska wouldn’t be an easy project. He must be intrigued.

I’ve said this before: I like the 47-year-old Rhule’s background coaching in the trenches. To wit: His assistant-coaching history includes three separate stints as a collegiate defensive line coach (Buffalo, UCLA, and Temple). In 2012, he was an assistant offensive line coach with the New York Giants.

Keep in mind, before he took the Baylor head-coaching job in 2017, Rhule was Oregon’s top candidate.

Although it’s gone quiet on the Rhule-Nebraska front, these situations often are fluid. Stay tuned.

Turn that frown upside down if your believing that Matt Rhule is out it's all pure speculation bc nobody has a clue who is in or out. I would like other coaches other then Matt Rhule to come here but I can understand why people would want him.

    I want him because

    - He's primarily an O-line coach (our biggest weakness).

    - Excellent at player development (confirmed from numerous Baylor fans)

    - Has great relationship with Texas HS coaches.

    - Solid record of turning around struggling programs.

He ticks all boxes in what we need.

Who were the 5-star recruits which Tom Osborne recruited to NU?  Give me names.  I think you are over-estimating the number of 5-stars that TO brought in.  I honestly don't think there was such a thing as star ratings until the 90s.

Yeah there was no such thing as star rating which I believe began in 2001 or 2002.

Tommie Frazier was the #3 QB in the nation when he arrived so a consensus 5 star, in today's terms.

Steve Taylor pushing hard for his guy on Facebook.  I have cooled a bit on Mickey after watching the way he/Whipple manage the clock-  I would agree- if it was Mickey- we should have announced it by now.

    "Dear Nebraska ,
If you do not adapt & embrace change you will be extinct ! Mickey J is solely qualified on his resume alone ... being a person of color + former player is just an added bonus an intangible that could make a huge difference . He has earned the right to succeed or fail on is on merit just like all the previous Head Coaches !! It was totally embarrassing as the announcers repeatedly mention that NU has not had a minority Head Coach In any sport at the University Of Nebraska ! So….70% of our athletes are black and 99% of our coaches & Administrators are white. Be Better Big Red
    Sincerely & Respectfully,
    Steven L. Taylor #9".

Mickey himself confirmed that Trev didn't bother interviewing him so we can rhule him out completely. Thank Goodness.

I really hope Trev talks to Bielema. I know many on this board hate the guy but what he has done with Illinois is really special. They competed today and refs gifted the game to Michigan for TV ratings next week. Bielema will have the Huskers competing for the conference title every year. He has excellent coordinators, especially his defensive coordinator. I would take Bielema in a heartbeat. He has a proven record in the big ten and knows what it takes to win. Rhule will struggle in this conference.

80-35 as B1G coach. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

If he gets fired after this year, and it kinda seems like he will, I would be super stoked if he was brought in by the new HC as an OC. What he likes to do is severely limited by the NFL rules. I think if he comes back to the right situation in college again he can do really well.

Bro, as a Steelers fan, stay far, far away from this jacka$$.

He's by far the worst OC we've ever had..and we've had some real stinkers.

fortunately for me I’ve had 5 beers and it’s well past midnight. So I won’t embarrass my self any more that to suggest Tom Sawyer by Rush, Edge of the Ocean by StickFigure, and Paradise by 311.

see you Monday morning, ya stinkfist (by tool)

5 beers? Those are rookie numbers.
