Iowa State is literally in the cellar in the Big XII.

And I realize Iowa State is not an easy place to recruit to but I'm not sure what your basis is for the recruiting comment.  He has averaged one four-star recruit per year for the last six years - most of whom are from Iowa - and struggles to sign classes in the Top 50.

Mickey I'd buy.  Campbell not so much.

What has Mickey ever done other than catch lightning in a bottle with Ja'marr Chase and Justin Jefferson?

    He sucks.

One bad season doesn't make Campbell a bad coach considering his two best players left last year. He's made 6 bowls in a row. You want to know how many bowls ISU made before him? 11 in their entire history.

Yes they could be playing all the media.  Now if Franklin would go to Auburn I can see Rhule going to Penn State where he played ball.

It would complete idiocy to leave Penn State for Auburn who have the most meddlesome boosters in America (even worse than Texas) .

As you all know Deboer has been my top choice since last year. We can only hope...

Nah I'm happy Deboer has proven his worth at UDub.

If we hired him from Fresno, loads of fans would have whined and b!^@hed about his resume.

DeBoer is basically a 10 year younger version of Leipold.

Won like crazy at a lower division.  Won at a Group of 5 school.  Hasn't fully proved himself at a P5 job, but early returns look good.

8-2 in his first season at Washington.

    Just beat #8 Oregon.

He is everything people claim Matt Rhule to be.

So if her husband had to mansplain who it was, then he saw him too? And if so, why not just say my brother in law saw him? Sorry but your story has a lot of holes in it.

He didn't say the SIL's husband saw him. It could be the wife just said Trev was talking to some middle aged dude named Matt. The husband could have shown her a picture of Rhule and the wife must have said yeah..this guy.

Then the husband could have 'mansplained' who Matt was.

I have a lot of free time today lol.

Alternative take: This is actually a part of the problem.

I don't see why guaranteed money became such a huge part of the contract; it should be performance-based, contractually.

Performance based contracts will be the norm in 5-7 years. Mark my words.

    Lol, me either.

They were both there on a stadium tour that they gave my nephew for his birthday.  They were by the meeting room area, saw Trev, Matt, and a few other assistants walk out of a meeting room and when they saw the tour group, went right back in the room.

What's with the secrecy? Its not like we're poaching him from another team or we're in playoff hunt and coaching change might discourage the players.

He's unemployed, we're a perennially losing program in the need for a HC. Simple as that.

Throw out the covid year because several players didn't play, no fans and all the other nonsense that went on. HC that many don't like but has done well recently...take a guess.

    11-2

    9-4

    7-3 (currently)

    Fleck?

  9. Let's be real, the Rhule rumors were started by the 'Platinum Board', a forum notorious for karma whoring and bulls#!tting to get subscriptions.

We all got carried away with it. We actually believed it because 'the stadium lights were on' with Rhule and his wife getting a tour lol.

Jeeesus, how dumb could be we?

I'm going to laugh when Bret Bielema is in front of our podium after Illinois' regular season ends.

Considering the crap we're in, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Proven winner in the B1G, has an undertalented Illini ranked, amazing player developer, has had loads of players drafted in the first two rounds.

I don't believe it will be Rhule, so prepare yourself.

Why would Trev Alberts fire a coach 3 games into the season, while Matt Rhule is still coaching in the NFL, if he was his #1 target?

Point is, You don't dump a chick if you don't have one lined up right away (wisdom).

So when he fired Frost after 3 games, he had to know who his replacement was at that time, while keeping it under wraps.

We might be circling back to Matt Campbell.  I still feel Bill O'Brien might have been the guy who was considered (he's an OC and can talk about HC jobs during season, no biggie).

I seriously doubt it is Rhule, no matter how much steam is picking up.

Lane would be amazing, but we all know that.  And a home run hire.  Part of me wants to wish it's him so badly.  Otherwise, we got to be honest here.

After the first 2 weeks of the NFL season, everyone and their dog knew Rhule was getting canned.

If its BoB, Saban will drive him to Lincoln and dump him outside Trev's office himself.

A few things Mickey's wife has put on twitter recently leads me to believe it won't be Mickey. She's cryptic to be sure, but it's obvious she isn't happy about something that's happened in the last couple days.

With all due to respect to her, they was no way in hell Trev would offer the HC to Mickey.

Why the hell would he risk his own job if Mickey failed?

  14. The 'no wins against ranked team' and ' we can do better' argument makes my blood boil.

    1. Urban already said his wife was pissed they had to leave Columbus for florida (jags tenure). You think his family would be happy to move to Lincoln?

    2. Kiffin won't leave the SEC (most fertile recruiting area) for the big10 West. Plus, Ole Miss (a very wealthy program) will match anything Nebraska offers in $.

    3. Mickey inexperienced and got rejected from Southern University. Trev won't risk his own job to see Mickey fail.

If the Rhulemors (see what I did there ;)) are true, we can't be surprised considering Trev's criteria.  He wanted an experienced coach that can develop players.  From what I've heard, the criticisms on Rhule don't have any drama to them, they're just folks complaining they didn't get the coach they wanted despite them having zero control over the process.

The criticisms are from those who think Kiffin and Urban are duelling over the job. As if Trev hasn't offered them the job lol

Or those of the 'just promote Mickey', ffs hes never been a coordinator, let alone a HC plus he got rejected from Southern University lmao. Trev knows he'll be sent packing if the hire is a bust.

So lets say they announce tomorrow is it disrespectful to the players and coaches bc they do have 2 games left. The season is technically over bc they aren't making a bowl game so would that be a plus to start on recruiting or a staff? ColoradoHusk made some great points as to why you should wait till the end of the season after the coaches are finished.

Do it quick so they can get a good start in recruitment. I don't want a honeymoon season for the new coach next year. A 6 win season should be the goal for 2023.
