  1. I have no doubt MR did the best he could. I can't throw enough nice words his way. I find it sad that some people are celebrating his firing. I think about all the people that have to relocate and their kids that have to start at new schools etc etc....Guess I wouldn't make AD. Good luck MR.

  2. I hate the fact Bohl's name is even in the hat. Nebraska wants and deserves SF. I think Bohl could turn around the program but would eventually get ran out of town in under 5 years due to the expectations of Husker football.

I could see Bohl riding off into the sunset at WYO. I could also see him coming to Nebraska for his assistants who would like to be on a bigger stage but at this point Bohl has to be about 7th or 8th on Nebraska's list. We all know how fast those names can get crossed off the list so anything is possible.

All signs point to SF which is a great. WYO would keep their coach who they are absolutely tickled with and grateful for and SF would come home. SF would get NU to a few top tier bowls and leave at the first sign of adversity or when something better came along. SF is about SF and nobody else and if you don't already know that, you will. It might take a month and a half or 5 years but you'll see.

All the while Nebraska could have had Gary Patterson??? SMH....

  3. Good article, and I agree with you. Even if Riley doesn't attain the level we want to see, he will have the program headed in the right direction. I do not believe that was the case with Pelini or Callahan. Callahan drove it into the ground and Pelini brought it back slightly but then stagnated with the thought that 9 wins was good enough so screw everybody outside the football room. Riley may not get the championships but he most definitely is laying the groundwork for them to be possible again. Some may disagree but that simply wasn't ever going to be the situation with the previous 2 coaches.

The first sign of the demise was 11-23-2001. That's when the first crack appeared. Callahan was a good defensive coordinator away from a lengthy tenure at NU until the pros called again. He doesnt deserve credit for running the program into the ground. The cupboard was FAR from dry when Pelini arrived but it was pretty bare when Callahan got to NU. Frankie didn't do us any favors except maintaining the identity that NU was still a power house for a few years.

  4. I would hope they would use a good share of the new funds on paying down their debts. IIRC, they owe on stadium and arena and other long term improvements, etc. The department has invested in facilities, etc. on a major level. If there are any real competitive 'shortcomings' they ought to address them but I believe our facilities are top notch and we are not suffering serious recruiting disadvantages at this point. Memorial stadium is as good as we could hope for realistically.

Personally, back in the late 90s, as "America's team" (that was what I felt Nebraska was in many ways - we were enormously popular nationally), I would have loved to see them spend the really big bucks and build the "Husker Dome" and start our own national 'invitational' preseason bowl game in which our annual first game opponent would be the prior year's national champs or the next highest rated one if we were the champs). I also thought we could host a season end bowl game as well instead of always going far away to play on a given oppoent's local 'home' field.

Instead, we spent considerable sums upgrading the old stadium and, not that it was bad or anthing, it is still an 'all kinds of weather' facility. Imagine all the tremendous games we could play indoors! Ticket holders would pay more for the indoor comfort controlled environment. Plus lots of other events could be utilizijng such a wonderful facility. Not many teams could match that and Nebraskans would love it.

I loved the many many seasons of fun and the 'weather' factors but as times change, we have to be forward thinking. I also thought Warren Buffet could afford to write the check and pay for the entire thing from petty cash. He could surely give that much back to the State of Nebraska, couldn't he?

The thought of the Huskers in the dome makes me sick. Football should be played outside in the elements especially in a blue collar state like Nebraska.

Warren Buffett doesn't owe NU Jack $hit. He has a bachelor's from NU and probably paid his own way.

    Football in a dome...in Nebraska.....yuck.

Sure its late and all but dude it's Wyoming...

Later in the season Wyoming may have beat Nebraska not to mention they put up a decent fight for 3 quarters in Lincoln. Josh Allen is the real deal and will only get better and has big time NFL potential. The "dude it's Wyoming" days are over. Much like Nebraska they made an attempt to fix their defense by hiring a new DC in Scottie Hazelton from the Jacksonville Jaguars. From Wyoming's standpoint that's a splash hire.

This kid would be a project for Nebraska. As for Wyoming, they would find a spot for him to contribute sooner rather then later.

You get a kid who likes the outdoors and Wyoming is a pretty attractive place. Your 30 minutes away from awesome camping fishing,ATV and dirt bike riding.

I hope this kid sticks with WYO but I'll be happy either way

    Longmire is a great show.....

Yes it is but it's filmed in New Mexico. Scenery is much the same as WYO.

I just stated some facts but thanks for the the concern about my sleep.

Nebraska won't open up the checkbook and pay the new DC 1 million plus so let's just stop that. We have never done that and never will. It will be a DC from a smaller school with a good track record or a NFL assistant. This is a little piece of reality for you dreamers out there.

I'm not sold on Riley except for the fact he's a nice guy however he is proving that he may indeed have a set of brass balls.

We gave Tim Beck his first big boy offensive coordinator job and got his pay up close to a million - why would we not pay that much for someone established with high pedigree?

Beck was getting around $700,000. I expect the new DC to get about the same. I can't figure out why they don't do clauses to make the job make attractive for coordinators. $700,000 plus $200,000 for a top 10 defense. $100,000 for a conference championship etc etc. Riley has them if I'm not mistaken so why not do this for the DC and OC also? Maybe there written in the contract we know nothing about them. Be good motivation for coordinators to recruit studs also.

Are people really sending "snarky emails" to the leader of the states largest multi million dollar university athletics department? If so, what the hell is society coming to? Stuff would have to rise to a pretty bad level before I would actually email him.

    Email has made people a$$hole$
to push your point further, social media in general has made people a$$hole$
Those people were always arseholes. Social media just makes them visible now and it makes it seem like there's more of them. I enjoy being off the $hit.

    They hired Luke Fickle.

Great hire by the Bearcats. Maybe the best hire they could have made.

    *Fickell

    Umm

Ha ha! He has tons of Ohio connections. Should be able to pick up the scraps leftover from tOSU. Plus HC experience at one of the top programs in the nation.

But I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

OSU's 3 star scraps they don't want go to play for Wisconsin,Michigan State and others not YSU.
Pretty sure Bo was not part of the above discussion. Re-read what you are quoting
Thanks for getting me straightened out there big shooter.DC

  13. Welcome back, who ever you are. Maybe if you would have spent more time around here your post may have some bearing in reality. Pretty much everything you said was not true.

And anyone that believes we need to fire the staff over 3 losses need to figure out just where you want our program to go.

Hmmm. Maybe you should pass this info off to a couple of guys who are or were our athletic directors.

Changing coaches evey few years DOES NOT WORK.

At least this point is relevant.

There's been quite a few troll posts around here lately. What's up with that?

Stop. Pelini dug his own hole and Frankie was twiddling around a hole he shouldn't have been. They set up their own guillotines.

  14. Constantly referencing how good of a guy Riley is seems reminiscent of Tebow. Every pundit always had to say "He's a heckuva guy" before they go in on how terrible of a QB he was.

I'm not one way or another yet about Riley. My biggest hope is that he shores up the recruiting to consistent top 15 classes. If he doesn't do that and continues with 9-4 or 10-3 seasons then he can beat feet just like Frank, Bill and Bo.

Your referring to the pro Tim Tebow correct? I would give my left nut for a QB that completed 67 percent of his passes with a 6/1 touchdown to interception ratio in college. Maybe both nuts if he could run for 6-800 yards a season also. Lol

All jokes aside Eichorst went out and got opposite of Pelini went it comes to sideline etiquette and dealing with the media. It's great HCMR is a "good guy" but frankly I don't care. Away from the media and off the TV screen Pelini was a good guy also. 4 maybe 5 years....that's what I give HCMR. Like i said things seems to be trending up with this year. I love the direction recruiting is going and we did meet expectations with the W/L ratio.

  15. Little FYI...Darrian recorded the 5th best SPARQ score at The Opening this year with a 138.38. The only other RB to beat him was 5* Cam Akers who scored a 140.13.

This kid is very athletic. Ran a laser-timed 4.48 40.

Good info. Seems he might be underrated. Nice offer list. I like the height and weight numbers also.

I'd like to see graphs like this for each of the last say 10 years and compare it with final season results. I would guess 9 out of 10 NC teams are in the elite talent category

I'll hit you in 10 minutes.

Update: The talent analysis from the OP only contains data for the last two years, so the data isn't readily available :(

That said, the last two national champions (Ohio St and Bama) are both in the elite category in their respective year :D

Looking at the programs that won titles in the past 10 years it's safe to assume they were either in the elite or great category the year they won.

Something I can give you... Average Recruiting Ranking of National Champion 4 years prior to national championship year:

    2005 - Texas (8)

    2006 - Florida (5)

    2007 - LSU (7.5)

    2008 - Florida (5.25)

    2009 - Alabama (8.25)

    2010 - Auburn (15.75)

    2011 - Alabama (2.75)

    2012 - Alabama (2.25)

    2013 - Florida St. (5.75)

    2014 - Ohio St. (4.25)

    2015 - Alabama (1)

Clearly, talent is important. If you say "elite" is top 10 recruiting, only one anomaly (Auburn) in the last 10 years. And that was Cam Newton.

I have been saying this for years. It's going to take a great defense like the 2009 Huskers with a freak of a QB like Newton to get to the Mountain top. I'm not sure we can do it with Banker at the helm defensively. I'm ok with him right now due to the improvement this year's squad made.

I'm almost certain we can climb on graphs like these if we can keep the Williams boys around and HCMR doesn't get put on the hot seat. I don't think we'll do anything but trend up the next 2 months. Another boost would be to put on a good showing in the bowl game.

  17. According to a nate gerry interview on 1620 Lee is tearing it up on scout team.

If he was that good the grumblings would be more then just Nathan Gerry. I'm not going to trust some beat writer either who could just be looking for click bait.

After Curt Dukes I refuse to put hope in somebody who's never seen the field at NU. :-) This is especially true when it comes to QB's.

So statistically, this has been our best defense since 2010? And we need to fire Banker?
Boyd Epley flat out said the football team was about 3 years behind the "boy bigs" in college football talent wise. If his talent evaluation system works which I assume it does, then Banker did a decent job.

We are in a hole talent and depth wise due to the previous staff that I hope we can climb out of. The Ohio state game exposed it and the Iowa game confirmed it. Riley needs 2 more years. Took Ferentz 4 years to get the ball rolling and I'll give HCMR the same. 9-3 this year sure felt better then 9-3 with Blow Pelini. It's nice not to see a grown man acting like a juvenile delinquent on the side lines. And we're beat up.....we'll be a new team come bowl time.

based on his curved athletic performance index, wasnt it that only 2 football players last winter tested better than any of our volleyball players? or something along those lines. I know our volleyball team is Alabamaish on the volleyball side of things, but it shows how far behind football actually is

Again. we have talented players. But we're not an overly talented team.

Epley said seven football players scored in the 1,700s. Twenty were at 900 or below. Epley said that 900 figure is a good benchmark for walk-ons. NU has a significant number over 1,500.-OWH

I bet the cream puffs are in the trenches. Somewhat concerning 20 players are under 900. The article doesn't specify if they're scholarship players are not.

  20. IIRC Newby was the #1 rated RB out of Cali, and Adam Taylor was the #1 rated back out of Texas. I remember thinking that they were going to light the world on fire. Newby at least contributed some meaningful snaps, however I'd say his career was overall a letdown.

What happened to Taylor though? Injury bug? Transfer?

He broke his ankle in 2014. Maybe he never fully recovered mentally or physically from this. They also ran the hell out of this kid down in Katy Texas in high school his senior year. Maybe he has nothing left in the tank and is a "do what i have to get my degree and get the hell out" type of guy. I was super high on Adam also. His offer list was impressive.

  21. Some of you need to leave the fallout shelter and take off those gorgeous tin foil hats.

Agreed. We haven't beat anybody noteworthy or been horse stomping people so I don't know what some fans want. I'm very grateful we haven't dropped a game up to this point. I also like the fact we are flying under the radar. We get these next 2 games then $hit gets real. Media would love that and Nebraska would get all the attention they wanted.
