  1. Looking more like a Monday 11am to 1pm window announcement with the NFL lawyers being involved.  Also better to announce something big on a Monday which does not have a lot of other sports news to compete with.

IMO the only other hire that would be better than Matt would of been Luke Fickell, but he is not going to leave his home state of Ohio.

I don't want Campbell here, but he'd be a better hire than Rhule.

12 years and never broke into double digit wins Matt Campbell??  Currently last place in the Big 12 Iowa State Matt Campbell?? Talk about Mike Riley 2.0.

I bet there are a lot of Iowa State fans that would LOVE for literally any program to take Matt Campbell off their hands right about now.  I recall Oregon State fans coming onto our boards when we hired Riley and telling us how happy they were that he left.

  3. For those saying Mickey should be given the HC job at Nebraska (still can't believe they are out there) consider the following:

No experience being HC at any major level.

Questionable leadership ability allowing Whipple to remain on staff after several games blundered away by our offense.

Questionable end of game management skills and game time management skills.

Has no idea that on a windy day you want the wind at your back in the 4th quarter.

Allowed Whipple to keep Purdy in when it was clear he is not an FBS level QB which lost us games.

Mickey is an amazing WR coach and recruiter.  Any HC would love to have him around and hopefully he is retained by Matt.  But to make him the HC would be a monumental blunder and one we can ill afford given our predicament.

  4. Rhule is a home run hire.  He rebuilt two FBS dumpster fires into 10+ win conference contenders in just two years each.  We currently are a dumpster fire looking to just win the ultra pathetic Big West.  We just beat a team that was set to win the division IN THEIR HOUSE....let that sink in.  The Big West is so terrible, that Bret 'can't win in the SEC' Bielema may win the division in his second year at Illinois with an 8 win team.  Matt does not have to do much to turn this floating flaming turd around.

  5. For the record I hope Mickey is retained as the WR coach and chief recruiter and given a higher pay rate than would be expected along with a nice hefty end of year bonus for being interim of such a hot mess.

Also for the record, if Rhule brings all of his Carolina coaching staff along to fill the assistant spots and not fill each spot with the best of the best available in the nation, I am going to lose my sh**.

  6. For those comparing Rhule to Riley (which is just laughable) consider this:  In 17 years of being a college football head coach, Riley had ONE 10 win season.  Rhule on the other hand had three 10+ wins seasons in just 7 years.  Rhule has a lot of college losses because both programs that he took over were complete dumpster fires when he arrived (sound familiar??).  The first year he was at Temple he was 2-10 and the first year he was at Baylor he was 1-11.  Two seasons later both teams were 10+ win juggernauts.  For anyone to do this once is hard enough, but twice landed him a gig in the NFL.  If you think hiring an NFL reject is a problem, then Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh and many others would like to have a word or two with you!

There is nobody on this earth who is currently looking for work as a football head coach more qualified to turn this turdsicle of a Nebraska football program around than Matt Rhule.  If he leaves after making us a 10+ win team again in a few years, then fine.  We will pay well for another big name who will not have to build from the ground up.

  7. Nobody wants to beat iowa more than me.  Do I think it will happen this year?  No.  This team is a mess with no identity and the coaching staff is looking to have the same play calling and game management ability as Scott.

  8. For the record, I knew that I knew Scott was a bust right after the second loss to Colorado.  At the time I verbalize this online and got lambasted by fans "who know better".  Even that early on I could see the writing on the wall and it was not difficult to read.

  9. Stop making it an honor.  You cannot create a team environment when special (visible) status is given to certain players.  Everyone on the Husker D is a blackshirt.  Everyone on the Husker D wears a blackshirt in practice, just how it was when it all started.  I do say we need to get rid of the skull and bones.  We are a collegiate football team, not a biker gang.

The teams on their schedule.  Wins are wins and they win more games than they lose.  We simply don't anymore. Your comment tells me everything I need to know about what version of reality you live in.  You can hope for stuff to happen, but ya might wanna accept reality first.

Beating a bunch of cupcakes and non bowling teams is something to hang your hat on?  And I need the reality check?

Speaking of reality checks, iowa is about to get another one when they get a 40-50 point drudging from OSU for the B1G champ game. "But hey, they won enough games to limp to a bowl and barely beat a 3 win Nebraska, so its all ok."  Even hard-core Iowa fans would tell you they are not that good.

Yeah. All that winning they do over there makes that a certainty! Poor fans.

    Winning against who?

I look forward to the day that Husker fans stop using iowa as a bench mark for our football program.  Iowa is barely by the skin of thier teeth beating us when we are our worst in 60 years.  That tells you everything you need to know about iowa.

Can't really agree with a lot of this.

While Callahan did take them to the 2002 SB, the 2003 season was an unmitigated disaster. He lost the locker room which was ready to mutiny against him and ended up being fired. The "dumbest team in America" comment will never be forgotten. He was a desperation hire by Pederson after every other coach he contacted turned us down.

Bo was a hot commodity as a DC but had zero HC experience. And even though it ended up working out pretty well I wouldn't consider him a top pick when compared to others coaches with previous HC experience.

Was not saying Bill was a good coach.  Was just pointing out that he was a top candidate at the time of his hire.

I should add..a top candidate in the world of football..not necessarily in the minds of Husker fans.

  13. Does the next HC have to care about Nebraska?.....NO.  If we hire a coach who is already rich and just wants to win to feed their ego and get launched back into the NFL, he will win games and plenty of them.  It's more about the career for the truely professional coaches.  Come here and lose like Frost and your career is over.  If Rhule comes here and wins double digits for 2 years after a mulligan first year and leaves for the NFL, we will be the better for it and will be a much more attractive destination for we will not be a complete rebuild for the next HC. We need a coach that can get us back into being relevant.

Rhule is a very proud football coach with pride.  I don't know if MIckey is retained or if he should be.  We need to have a coach who has the whole rooms ear.  CAn't be having players turning to Mickey and going against Rhule.  I don't see it working with MIckey staying.  I don't think we need MIckey to stay either.  We need to have a clean slate going forward.  My only thing with Rhule is whether he will have the committment to stay here 4 plus years.........that seems to be his style.

If its Rhule, he should have his staff in line coming into the announcment.  I am skeptical if its Rhule, but I think we could do alot worse and maybe we could do better.  Sounds like Leipold is gettng more money and years to stay at KU..........what does this all say about the process?  I think we are being told no by some sitting coaches who don't want this job.......we can keep saying we are a Top 10 destination job, but in all reality, we are no longer.   This is why we keep hiring coaches every 5 years and not getting a name to come here.

We got one of the top picks of the lot every time except for Riley which should of never happened.  Callahan coming off a superbowl.  Bo coming off a natty at LSU.  Scott coming off an undefeated season.  We are still going to get one of the top picks and still a top destination in money, facilities, and fan support.  If the money is there, they will come.

  15. https://www.outkick.com/matt-rhule-nebraska-cornhuskers-football-contract-hiring-speculation/

"According to multiple reports, Rhule and Nebraska could be racing towards a contract agreement. On3.com reported Rhule is “back in play” for the Cornhuskers, HuskersCorner.com reported the announcement could come as soon as Friday and the Lincoln Journal Star claimed university employees have been told to prepare to host high profile boosters and Nebraska officials on as little as a 24-hour warning."
