Well, since we play Wisconsin on Saturday... does anyone believe Riley might pull the redshirt off of a certain freshman running back?

If Stevenson wasn't good enough to get reps against the first 5 opponents, I doubt he puts him in against the #14 rushing defense.

Mike Riley, if you are reading my posts... pulling the redshirt off of Jordan was sarcasm!! LOL

However, I guess it was the logical progression as outlined in the original post. Twilight zone stuff.

I hate to burn his shirt, but I do understand it. We rank 107th in kick return yardage so were trying to boost that. If we want to win this year it may be necessary. Think about how much having DPE helped in the punt return game last year. He sparked the comeback win against Iowa and almost Mich st. DPE didn't really start helping on offense till about mid season last year. Maybe stevenson can help the offense later in the year. Just my two cents.

  2. As far as Wilbon, I thought the coaches said that when he got his off the field issues settled he'd be on the field. Maybe I misunderstood that. Anyway the problem with putting him in just for running plays is opposing teams will pickup on that quick. In other words when Wilbon is in it's a run, then the running game would be less effective.

  3. At what point to do we consider parting ways with Bo? I am one of the bigger Bo supporters you will find, but I feel like we are stuck in first gear. I know the "but TO didnt win a NC until X #years" crowd will voice their opinion, but I think if we have another 4 loss season, Nebraska does need to consider their options.

This isn't 1980 anymore -- take a look at the number of years each head coach has been at their school, for the past few NC title winners. I do not see a better product on the field now, then I did in 2008, and I do think that is a problem.

I think the only way you part ways with Bo is if you open up your check book and get a coach that has proven he can win championships as a head coach. If we let Bo go that would be 3 coaches in 10 years we've run out of town. The next one better be a Grandslam homerun or we're Notre Dame.

  4. I have been a longtime follower of this board, but decided to start posting. I am a former offensive lineman that played football for 14 years, culminating with a career at a division II school. After years of looking up to players like Rimington, Aaron Graham, and Dominic Raiola, I was extremely impressed with Justin Jackson in his first start on Saturday. They used him out in space often and he was quick, physical, and always finishes plays in a dominant position. I noticed him early, and couldn't stop watching his great effort and intensity throughout the game. I know center was a concern coming into the year, but i thought Jackson played great as well as the rest of the group up front.

I apologize for the long post, just wanted to put in my 2 cents and give some love for the big guys up front.

    Thanks for listening.

Couldn't agree more. I thought that was the most dominate our O-line has looked since 2000. I've got a question for you since you played the O-line. On the plays where Jackson pulls and leads the outside run he was actually behind the RB a couple times. I noticed that when he pulled he would sag a couple yards behind the LOS, where as when the guards pulled they would go right down the LOS. Is this by design or was that an error on his part. Also did he not get out in front of the play fast enough, or did the running back not wait for his blocking? BTW this is not a criticism. Jackson played outstanding.

  5. .

Much has been made of Nebraska only giving up 260 yards to the Golden Eagles. While that number is respectably low (Charlie McBride's benchmark was 250 yards made for a good performance), what should give us some pause is the manner in which they got those 260 yards.

I heard McBride say either last year or the year before that in todays game you would be doing great to hold a team to 300 yards.
  6. This has been mentioned in previous threads before, but it really isn't so much that our schemes are complicated, it just goes back to the scheme in general that we are running on defense. Defensive Coordinators can generally use one of two different schemes: either a One-Gap Defense or a Two-Gap Defense. Under Bo Pelini Nebraska is a 2-Gap defense.

There was a great interview recently by HailVarsity.com with former Nebraska Defensive Coordinator Charlie McBride where he talks about the differences between the One-Gap and Two-Gap Defense. Here is a small quote explaining the role of a two gap defender:

"The two-gap system asks a defender to stand his blocker up, read where the play is going, and handle one of two spots, the A-gap or the guard-tackle gap (B-gap)."

Another great quote from Charlie McBride towards the end of the article was: "If you don't have a defensive line, you can go home."

It's a fantastic read that really does a nice job of explaining what Nebraska's general defensive scheme is, and I would highly encourage any Husker fan or football fan for that matter to check it out: http://hailvarsity.c...-talks-two-gap/

Another great blog post brophyfootball.blogspot.com or "Cripes! Get back to fundamentals" has some very in-depth X's & O's information on Bo Pelini's defense from the last few years. This is another great read for those that enjoy this type of thing: http://brophyfootbal...bel/Bo%20Pelini

My personal opinion is that I am not a big fan of the 2-gap defense. I think it causes our defensive lineman to be too passive. When the ball is snapped they have to think too much instead of just playing and plowing off the ball. Asking a defensive lineman to be in charge of two-gaps is a lot of responsibility to put on one player.

If it were my choice we would go back to running an aggressive 1-gap Cover 1 defense with Robber Coverages like we did under Charlie McBride. That way the defense is dictating to the offense what it can and cannot do, and not the other way around. It should be noted that this type of defensive scheme is also heavily used by Nick Saban at Alabama. (Pictured below is a sample of a 4-3 Cover 1 Robber Defense)

    mich_cover1.gif

I agree, a two gap system requires your D-lineman to be animals to engage blockers and get off the block as oppose to a 1 gap where you just attack your gap. At least thats how I understand it. I'm really trying to learn this stuff . You don't tend to see alot of 2 gap in the NFL either except for some 3-4 teams.

  7. Interesting quote from the S.Miss coach:

“When we subbed quarterbacks and switched a little bit of our game plan — let’s face it, we weren’t going to win the football game in the third quarter,” the Golden Eagles’ first-year coach said. “It was more about trying to improve our football team.”

Weren't they very much in it in the 3rd quarter?

I thought the same thing during the game. If I were and USM fan I would be a little worried if my new head coach was throwing in the towel when he was down 34-17 in the 3rd qt, and his offense was moving the ball.

  8. looked a lot like last years defense...did anyone notice how easily the zone read and option worked against our weakside and strongside lb'ers...we have some serious work to do on the defensive line and linebackers..dont forget..we have an extremely strong running qb and rb coming up next weekend...hope we can fill these holes

RB yes very good, QB is not that good of runner. I watched the UCLA game last thursday night, and there QB runs about like Cody Green. Maybe a half step faster but that's it. Noting like the guy we seen this week, nor Robinson, or Miller.

  9. The guy is a bruiser. I was in section 20 and I heard the pads pop all the way up when he ran that guy over.

Do you think that this program could help make him a little faster??

I think so. The think I noticed is that he didn't follow his blocks real well a couple times. That said it's his first CFB game and I'm sure things were moving pretty fast for him. I think he has a great future, and for a freshman in his first game he averaged almost 6 ypg which is pretty good. Abdullah looks faster to me this year than last, and I think you'll see the same with Cross after a year in the program.

  10. lo,

It should be noted that DeMorrio was initally a safety who was moved to LB. I think that to get the fastest, most athletic defense possible on the field that Nebraska needs to switch players to other positions as soon as they arrive on campus and then keep them there.

For example, DE Greg McMullen to DT and let him grow into a 320-330 pound run stuffing DT. Taking safeties Cooper and Stafford and making them LBs. Converting guys like Ciante and Andrew to safety.

The whole point is to make the defense as fast and athletic as possible and clearly Bo isn't maximizing the potential--I think.

I agree 100%. I like what Bo did with Haag and Gomes. How about SJB to that role? He is a big dude. I saw another person speak of Fish bulked up to a DE with the height. For some reason, at least IMO, Bo will do that with the DB's, but appears reluctant to move any one else.

Seems like we need to get faster on the DL. Regardless of schemes shown from MSU we still look slow up front (same as last year) and save David, slow in the LB's last year as well. I was hoping to see more of the younger guys play on the DL and the LB position. When the guys were in a position to make a play they whiffed, arm tackled or over pursued. I hope we saw a lot on film that we can correct. I am worried that the same issues we faced last year, appear to be the same we have seen (at least for me) on Sat.

You gotta think as the year goes and the younger guys start to figure it out a little more that they will see the field more. I thought the series that Moss and Curry got to play that they looked pretty stout and didn't get pushed off the LOS as much, but it was late in the game and the USM Oline may have been gased.

  11. With all the talk about what Southern Miss did and the natural concerns about facing Braxton Miller, Dennard Robinson, Cain Colter, etc I've been thinking about how I would defend these guys if I was NU's DC.

Here's what I would do: I'd run a variation of Buddy Ryan's 46 defense. I'd run a scheme with 3 DTs, two DEs, one or two LBs, and four or five (depending on the down/distance/scenario).

The three DTs would be placed head up, or a zero technique, over both guards and the center.

The two DEs would be widened out to set the containment edge.

The LBs would be charged with running sideline to sideline to defend the running game.

The four or five DBs would have one responsibility-to cover their guy and do not let him get open

In summary, the front six or seven would stuff the run and apply pressure in passing situations and the back four or five would cover.

And oh, my DBs would be up on line playing tight press coverage. None of this off playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage crap.

    Thoughts?

The biggest problem I see with this is that most teams run the spread out of 10 and 11 personal (3 and 4 WR sets), so you're in nickel and dime most of the time.

  12. I wonder how we ever won the Colorado game last year?

Alex Henery?? Why didn't we punt there? Again?

I have never seen a fourth and goal punt!

    :yeah:yeah:yeah

We were back near the 40yd line. What else was there to do? We shot ourselves in the foot during that series. The players know it, coaches know and we know it. Could Henery have made that kick? Perhaps. But second guessing does no good. I do know this though. Our defense was playing absolutely phenomonal the 2nd half. So why not punt and force VaTech to score? And on that particular series, they didn't. They punted.

Are you serious? The CU game was a totally different situation. Less than 2 min left in the game. Yesterday we had 4th and goal from the 40, but it was in the 3rd quarter. This thread reminds me why I quit checking message boards last year. This is the first time I've checked this year. Screw it, see you all next year.

I am not saying we shouldn't have punted and totally agree. However, I don't think I have ever seen a 4th and goal where a team had to punt. :wtf

    '

Ah ok...I gotcha. I agree...I don't think I've ever seen that situation either. My apologies if I sounded harsh. This board seems to still be in complete nuclear meltdown right now.

  13. Just finished it up. Check it out, enjoy and feel free to comment. I'm planning a Dan Alexander/Correll Buckhalter one next and then might do a We-Backs one, or start doing national championship years. Haven't decided yet.

Mike is my favorite husker of all time, and I'm 38 so i've seen some good one's. Everytime somebody asks me the question "if you could have one player back for this season who would it be"? my answer is Mike Brown everytime. I heard an interview with Charlie McBride last year and he was asked the question "If you were starting a defense today and you could pick any on guy you coached to start that defense who would it be"? He said Mike Brown. that says it all for me.

  14. The guy who originally posted this on another board has since added to it, and Sam Keller is in the clear on this deal. " My friend has clarified that the comments SK made were more mocking the general perception of the team -- not as a threat or him saying something derogatory about his teammates. I want to make that clear."

The part about CM, on the other hand, is what it is.

One thing I'll say about Keller is that he wants to win badly, and he's very upset about how the season's going. At least he cares. The other guy? Not so sure.

  15. This was posted on another board, and has been confirmed by several people:

I feel as if I should tell you what I witnessed tonight. Corey McKeon was at the Brass Rail trashed as usual and grabbing girls, talking s**t, etc. Someone asked if anybody said anything to him who was from the '97 team and he held his arms out as if to say bring it and said, "tell them to step into my territory." He also said, and I quote, "Fu** Tom Osborne." Also, Sam Keller said "we're f***ed!" Honestly, that made my blood boil and I couldn't resist, so I asked him why he'd say that and he replied, "because our offensive line fu**in' sucks, Nebraska fans f**kin' suck, and you fu**in' suck...want your ass kicked???"

  16. All I ever hear from Callahan supporters is "Look at our recruits"

Well Ron Zook recruited very well and it took Urban Meyer 2 years to make them champions. It's still about coaching and Callahan has never shown that he can win big games....EVER!

By the way....we should try and get some defense also. My only question is how long will you give Callahan to go to a BCS game?

I'll take this over the crap that frank put on the field any day of the week.

  17. This ain't California, brother. You're heading to Lincoln, Nebraska to play in one of the toughest placest in college football with the greatest fans in all of sports.

    Nebraska - 31

    USC - 28

Nebraska won't score more than 10 points, and SC won't score 40. I think it will be SC 31 - Nebraska 10 with Nebraska possibly in the lead at the end of the 1st quarter. As far as conditioning is concerned, Nebraska will be slowed in the 4th quarter unable to keep up with SC's speed and Trojan conditioning asserting itself. These guys are in shape. Their talent in matched only by their physical condition. We have 12 non starters who started at least four games last year. Even if we got tired, we have the depth to make up for it. It ain't California, but we don't play all our games in California. We win in Alabama (Auburn), Maryland (Va. Tech), Arkansas, and Indiana with high grass. Unlike the SEC, we don't play 8 home games. The conditions and location doesn't matter. The team does.

Wrong. We scored 10 last year in Cali. This year the offense is better, and we're at home.

  18. what good teams has chase gone against and performed well? keller on the other hand has done well against teams like USC and LSU. Huh?

The difference is that Chase would beat Wake and USC hands down. They are lucky they dont have to play us this season. Mizzou will finish the season in the top 10 and quite possibly the top 5 in the polls. Pinkel is an all around better coach than ole Slash ever could be.

O.K. buddy listen carefully. Put the crack pipe down. Missouri in the top 5?

What would you like to put on that? I'll bet you my house for your house straight up that MU doesn't end up in the top 5
