  1. Relatedly, anyone have a theory as to why our team has had such a great run of kickers? Luck? Did Boyd Epley create some secret quad machine? Just curious...

All I know is that we've been really lucky to have such great kickers. If only we would have had one in 1993, we might be talking about a three-peat.

  2. Want another random trivial question?

This one is fairly recent (and I thought fairly easy to get -- so I won't be surprised if someone gets it right away). Who was the opponent for the largest home Husker game? :)

    Louisiana-Lafayette?

Haha yes. Can't believe how many people guess Texas/USC/Va Tech/Oklahoma. But since you are in band... should have been even easier.

  3.

Even though I don't agree with the way Dirk wrote the article, I don't see how it could not be considered opinion based on fact at least to some extent. After all - it is a column. It's not a hard news story. You're allowed to be subjective to an extent, and it's not like Dirk doesn't have an editor who's making sure his article isn't full of complete BS. However, Dirk used experiences and facts from the last year or so to put together his opinion. His delivery and method of expressing those opinions is why he's getting the flak, coupled with the fact that Dirk tends to write critical articles in the same manner [...]

Enhance89 - I think we are on the same page for the most part. I do agree that it was "opinion based on fact" but it was not opinion passed as fact.

  4. [And I still don't quite understand how many took Dirk's opinion story as being that out of line.

Is it really that hard to understand? Dozens of people here. Dozens of people commenting on his stories. Dozens of people calling in to radio shows, writing emails, etc. All denouncing the article as unnecessary.

The kicker, though, is that his own peers have written articles denouncing him. The nail in the coffin is that Bo was applauded by journalists as he left the presser after dressing Dirk down publicly. That never happens.

It's harder to understand how people who root for this team don't understand why what Dirk did was out of line.

Okay. Well, I just don't believe it was 'opinion passed as fact' or anything that many people are accusing of it being. As Dirk has put it (in his "Revisiting critiques of quarterback Martinez", it may have had a tone "too personal for a college athlete." But his opinions, "themes" and "details" appear as Dirk intended. And I agree that the perceived tone may be too much when it comes to critically analyzing college athletes. But IMHO, it isn't as unnecessary as many would have me believe.

And here is the link to the Dirk reaction: http://www.omaha.com/article/20111012/BIGRED/710129793/-1#chatelain-revisiting-critiques-of-quarterback-martinez

  5. Everyone in this whole situation just needs to take a breath...

[...] But when columnists blend what is fact & what is fiction, when they write articles thatimply that someone said something when they really didn't, and when they stoop below the expected level of their profession then it is a cause for concern for the general public.

Just curious... what part of Dirk's (or even Lee's) story was flat out fiction? I don't want to stir the pot too much, but as far as I recall, Bo has told more flat out lies than these critical columns...

There is no way to prove that an anonymous former athletic dept employee had a conversation with Lee unless he reveals

his source. They used to teach that type of thing in J-School as a no-no. (Bach of Journalism, NU 01)

That's just the most glaring one. Both articles are rife with specualtion masquerading as fact.

Okay -- the anonymous source is one. But what exactly was said in Dirk's article that was portrayed as fact and not just

    opinion based on facts?

Several speculative statements that he styles and passes as fact. The line about Taylor "being better suited somewhere else" for example.

I understand that it was an opinion piece, but he was arguing that last weeks game was a watershed, and used the above statement as evidence. That is falsey inflating an opinion as fact. Also a no-no.

The "being better suited somewhere else"? What part are you exactly talking about? If you want to read the article again, here it is: http://www.omaha.com/article/20111006/BIGRED/710069730

And I still don't quite understand how many took Dirk's opinion story as being that out of line. Because of the current circumstances... we don't have many options at quarterback beyond Taylor. And if Taylor continued to struggle as he did against Wisconsin (and at other points in his career), a quarterback change might make sense -- we just don't have the options. (Ie - with Taylor, we might do well or might end up poorly playing. But without him, we don't have much of a chance either.

  8. Dirk insinuated that if Martinez fails, Bo should suffer the consequences. "The stakes are high Saturday night for the coach and his quarterback. Pelini hitched his program to Martinez." This is what I'm on about - the article was written in an unnecessary manner.

While this statement may be pretty critical, I don't think it crossed a line or was unfair. After all, if Taylor started to really play poorly, our team (and therefore Pelini) would be in poor shape. Our depth at quarterback is weaker than it could be and while that's just how things shake out sometimes, the way Bo has stuck with Taylor through all last year didn't help the matter.

  9.

Thank you thank you thank you. Because of this post I was able to enjoy a game on CBS like never before. Finally I have a way to tune out Phil f'ing Simms. Dear lord I hate that guy, just the sound of his voice makes me want to beat puppies.

Please PM me your name, address, and DOB so I can send you appropriate man presents on your birthday going forward.

BTW it's pretty amazing the other things you catch, trash talk, sounds of hits, etc when you have the announcers turned off. It also essentially mutes commercials that utilize 5.1 as well. What a great way to watch the game.

Haha, glad to here you enjoyed the 5.1 broadcast. Now, just don't get frustrated if you switch back to the BTN (and I think FSN does it too). :)

  10. To all of those who are interested in the "B" being red... What did you think of Texas adding the "Texas" to the script part of the Big 12 logo? (Every school had the option to do it, but I think Texas was the school that did it the most often?) Not trying to stir the pot here, just curious. :)

  11.

Another nice thing, and maybe this is why you like it, is that if they isolate the announcers in the center (like FSN does/did), you can unhook the center channel and just get game sound (or turn off the center amp if you have separates-- just setting "Center" to "none" won't work). The channels that do that are my favorite. I pay closer attention to the game and spend less time irritated with the broadcast if i don't have anyone telling me what I'm seeing. I had a lot of fun watching games with only the ambient sound from the stadium coming in in (essentially) 4.1 :)

    +1

  12. And if you are into the younger "party" atmosphere, the Nebraska pep band (the one from the Nebraska marching band) plays at Grandmother's (70th and A) on Friday night (as well as the Havelock Misty's -- but that's more relaxed/older crowd). Sets are at 10p and 11p -- and this tends to be more packed/fun the Friday's before the bigger games, so no clue how packed it will be this week... (but it's worth checking out if you don't have any other plans than the O Street Friday night plan).

  13. Count me in on liking BTN. And not to drag ESPN/politics into this thread, but I am all for some competition to ESPN. :)

And the nerd in me gets annoyed that the BTN's 5.1 Dolby Digital signal puts the main audio on the L/R channels instead of the center channel. (I used to think I didn't need 5.1 sound for football, but I've been spoiled with ESPN's audio.)

  14. I went to last year's game between us and I had a great time. You're right that they're crazy about the Wildcats. Their student section is pretty fun to watch. While watching a couple of rows of students do the 'forward and backward' thing on T.V. is kind of dumb, it's actually really impressive and fun to watch the whole student section do the cheer in person.

Tailgating is really fun since it's pretty open around the stadium. There is plenty of space to set up a grill/cooler/games etc. I hit up Aggieville after the game and had trouble getting served beverages, but I don't think you'll encounter the same problem if you decide to go that direction.

+1 -- and with K-State starting well, the crowd should be better than usual. Of my trips to other "close" schools (Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, K-State), my favorite probably was Kansas State when it comes to the fans and stadium.

  15. I really like the idea of trying to kick Texas out of the Big 12 (though I have no idea if it is even possible). But not trying to get back Colorado/Nebraska/A&M.

Ideally, the Big 12 could have done this before A&M decided to leave... (leaving the Big 12 with top football teams Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Baylor) But yes, I think the Big 12 should be more proactive and kicking out Texas would be very fun to see happen. :) Just don't think it ever was a possibility.

  16. Yeah -- sometimes media outlets do really have a jaded view about a team/conference/idea/etc. But occasionally I do think that sometimes it offers an "outsiders"/national view of something that we have a different perspective on.

Until this becomes a reoccurring problem (which I'm not sure it has?), I'd say it just means the conference needs to overcome a certain perception. Granted, I do think that the SEC has benefited from an impressively good perception. -- Have you watched that video about "what if a spelling bee was run like the BCS"? The SEC is just a more 'established' neighborhood. :)

  17. Great stuff. Welcome to the age of social media UNL

I somewhat agree with this, but I don't think they're terribly behind the times. I'm not super familiar with other schools but how many consistently film and put out high-quality product like this? And for free to boot.

Edit: Unless you didn't actually intend for that to be condescending towards the university and you were legitimately "welcoming them".

Yeah, I'm surprised it is actually online and free -- but really, who is going to enjoy it if it isn't online/free? And I'm not surprised they are using a larger watermark -- while there are plenty of cool user-made videos, I would find it frustrating for your shots to be used in not-so-good user videos. :)

Won't stop me from using them!

haha, yeah -- but there are tons of bad videos out there. I'm sure you do better than most.
