  1. This was posted on the Rivals board and I thought some here might be interested in it:

There's a big military hospital (Womack) at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, which is about 100 miles from Winston-Salem. A large number of GIs wounded in Iraq are treated or rehab there. They also have a "Warrior Transition Battalion" for wounded who are no longer in-patients but who will not be returning to regular duty and will eventually be discharged from the army.

When I received my season tickets, I noticed that their second home game is Army and thought maybe those soldiers would like to have the tickets. I called Womack this morning and they said yes, please send them. They asked how many they might receive and I told them they would be coming from Husker fans who bought season tickets, I didn't know how many there were, but pulled the number 40 tickets out of the air. I sure hope we can come up with that many.

Here's the mailing address (use all CAPS):

    DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY

    WAMC A ATTN: PAO OFFICE

    2817 REILLY ROAD

    MCXC PR

    FT. BRAGG, NC 28310.

They did say they'd be happy to receive all the tickets we won't be using, not just the Army game. I asked about transportation and said I was certain we could spring for a good tour bus but they indicated that they could provide transportation and also that many of the troops in the Warrior Transition Battalion had their own cars.

So, before it slips your mind, unless you have a better use for them, please get those tickets in the mail to Womack. Thanks.

  2. I posted this elsewhere and I thought I'd see if this joggged a few memories here. A station in Chicago that carries "The Best Damn Sports Show" had a "50 Most Devastating Sports Hits" segment last night. It may have seen show before so maybe some of you have seen it. I remember in hit in an OU game (1978) by John Rudd (last name sound familiar) that I thought was as good or better than some in the countdown. It knocked the OU punt receiver out cold and separated him from the ball--but the ref called "no fumble." Anyone else see the segment or remember the hit?

  3. maybe so, but speculate for a moment, how Callahan might have been feeling when that call came through from Keller's father. Beck had just bolted, gone was a promising prospect. Freeman had bolted for KSU, he wanted to play right away and he got the chance (maybe even a promise from Ron Prince to play right away?).

the phone rings and now cally has a chance to save 2007 by taking Keller, but he also knew Stoops was hot on his ass as well. very good chance (cally's last chance to get a highly touted qb) that he told Sam's father the kid was a lock to play after Taylor graduated.

no different than a sweethart deal in the business world, best price, best product may not win the bid, when there are personal ties between the owner and the guy selling the product. nothing wrong with getting a "guarantee" if you can negotiate one. deal or no deal? i think cally said, DEAL and was damn happy to do so!

The key words in your post, for me, are "speculate" and "I think Cally said". That is a far cry, IMO, from being certain Keller was promised a starting spot. It wouldn't be hard for Keller (or his father) to look at our situation and think he has an excellent chance of playing. On top of that the history between Callahan and Keller's father would probably mean he would trust Callahan to do what's best for his son. You're entitled to your inferences just as everyone else is. Not sharing your inference isn't a measure of someone's intelligence.

  4. ForRealBigRedFan (I couldn't get quotes to work!)

My recollection of the Beck situation is that it was Beck who said he was told he would be the only QB in the class--and I believe it was HS QB at that. Sort of interesting that Beck bolts when he doesn't get the starting job making me (at least) wonder if he couldn't handle having to earn the position.

I don't see the connection between Lucky and Bowman allegedly being promised a starting job and leaving after an average year. If anything having an average year would tell the kid he needs to work harder. Again, thinking about going somewhere else makes me wonder about being willing to compete. Things aren't going to get any easier for a kid at the next level if they don't want to face competition at this one.

Disagree with the "intelligence" statement. While I don't question someone's intelligence who looks at things and believed Keller was promised a position, I conclude there is less evidence to believe that than to believe he was not. Concluding Keller was promised the job requires more speculation than concluding he wasn't. I think Keller WINS the position so we all end up in the same place.

  5. This coaching staff has really never promised anything to anyone, be it right or wrong.

really? do you KNOW that for a fact? How would YOU know that??

There is more "fact" to conclude nothing was promised than the opposite. The players are saying they have to earn it, Callahan is saying he won't name a starter, etc. I don't disagree that Keller would look at our situation and figure it gave him one of the best chances of starting and getting to the NFL. I post on different boards and before now the only fans I have heard saying Keller was promised he would start were OU fans. First time for everything I guess. <_<

  6. My wife thinks I'm obsessed with NU football just because I'm excited about spring football!

I told her there are about a million others with me... :bonez

Did you marry an out of stater? They never understand. My last serious girlfriend hated the screaming at the TV , jumping up and down with joy , and broken remote controls. Not to mention that game days were spent at home until the game was over. She loved making plans on Saturdays only to see me break those plans.

I married an "out of stater", of course I was living in Illinois when I did it and my wife is from Illinois. I can identify with screaming at the TV and jumping up and down with joy. It scared the dog a couple of times but I think my wife understands now. We've been married 25 years so she has seen New Year's Days at my family's house in Omaha and "been through" the championship years (and down years). My kids are Husker fans so she would have to conclude that the rest of the family is nuts if she did say I was obsessed. I wouldn't say you're obssessed but I'm not entirely objective.

  7. he was promised, make no mistake about that, his dad knows cally well and he is a proven commodity, unlike Beck or Freeman. like i said, done deal unless something really odd happens.

Oh, sorry. I'm relatively new to this board and didn't realize that you are omniscient. <_<

if you followed the story from last fall, it is not too hard to understand

I did follow the story. I don't have any problem believing Keller (and his father) strongly believed he would be the starter. Too much at stake for them to not go some place where he could improve his stock for the NFL. Just don't think anyone can say with certainty that Bill Callahan said, "Sam, if you come to Nebraska, you will be the starter regardless of who you are competing against" (or words to that effect). What motivation is there to improve yourself if you know the job is yours? Why would Callahan remove that motivation and risk having something less than Keller's best?

  8. Anyone can think about it as much as they want but unless there is a injury Keller is the QB. He wouldnt have even come here if he wasnt promised to be the QB, sad but true. He had every school in the country after him you think he would come here without knowing he will start. BC is saying all the right things but we all know its for show.

I would be surprised if he was promised he would start. I think Callahan has learned some things from the situations with Beck and Freeman and truly believes competition will produce better players all around. That said, I think Keller's game experience, skills, and year to learn the system (even if it was on the scout team) gives him an edge. I think he wins out.

  9. Im not, im just sick of it popping up at the top of my unreads list. If you guys wanna rehash a topic where no new information could possibly shed any more light on what happened, go ahead. Its your time to waste. The facts which are that TO did retire, we did hire Frank Solich, we did fire frank solich, and we did hire Bill Callahan, arent gonna change, so you might as well get used to it, or start building a time machine, your choice.

I don't care to hear every little thing about Anna Nichole Smith or the stupid Head On commercials so I don't pay attention to them. I guess we all respond to this question in a different way. After reading a posts on this theme here and on other boards I thought I'd try confuse people with some facts (Osborne's own words).

  10. Coyeote, thanks for the post-I agree with your sentiments. As I said in a post earlier in this thread I think Osborne realizes the shadow he casts and is careful and sometimes keeps his distance to allow Coach Callahan (and when was coaching, Coach Solich) to put their own stamp on the program. The quotes I've seen and read from Osborne seem to be quite neutral (even when Solich was coaching) and the "commentary" provided by bloggers and media need to be separated from the words Coach Osborne actually uses. Anyone who has read "Faith in the Game" (pp. 145-146) should be able to appreciate why Coach Osborne is careful to no interject himself into NU athletics (especially football). If someone argues otherwise it seems to me they would be questioning Coach Osborne's truthfulness.

  11. This is an old thread so I don't know that it will be read or not but having a sense of Osborne's character and views on leadership his "distance" isn't dissing but giving current coaches a chance to put their stamp on the program without having to deal with his "shadow". He was not all that overtly present when Solich was coaching either. For some people the perceived approval/disapproval of Osborne on who ever is coaching would carry a lot of weight.

  12. Okay, I know that we have had this opinion thread many times, but it is fun and I am bored, stuck at home in the snow for the 3rd consecutive day.....

I want to know who is your all-time FAVORITE, not the best.. Offensive Player, Defensive Player......... and to make it interesting (current and historical), I want to know pre- Callahan and during Callahan era...

LIMIT 1 PLAYER ON OFFENSE AND DEFENSE.....NO NAMING 2-3.....GET OFF OF THE FENCE :)

    Here are mine:

    Pre-BC offense: Tommie Frazier...no contest

    Pre-BC defense: Mike Brown

    BC era offense: Zac Taylor

    BC era defense: Barry Turner

    * remember, this is your favorite, so there is no right or wrong, but I am sure that we will all find a way to turn this into a debate some how or another :)
