  1. Huskers!

Its a new year, a new beginning, and the same old Big Red enthusiasm. I had forgotten my password for several months now, and have not been able to respond to your blogs and put my two cents worth in. So if I say something that you've discussed over and over please forgive me.

I haven't seen Foppa on the board lately. I liked him. What happened?

My analysis of this year's Nebraska football team: (Keep in mind I only saw one complete game last year, the USC game)

Marlon Lucky is a talent. Last year he seemed in a funk and not comfortable. But this guy has the goods. I hope for him and the team his senior year is a great one.

Zach Potter really impressed me last year. Tremendous pursuit. He was going against a three time All-American, Sam Baker, and he did well I thought. On at least one occasion I saw Sam frustrated that Zac used his quickness to get away from a block.

Armando Marillo appeared to be your best cover safety. He covered our guys well. Little did he know our wide outs couldn't catch the ball however!

Slauson (Sp?) is a fine offensive lineman. His maturity should make him one of the Big 12's top OLmen.

Swift is an excellent receiver. He performed much better than our receivers. Want to trade?

Dixon. I personally think your are better off without him. He reminded me of a typical Big 10 lineman: big and strong but no quickness and poor footwork.

Linebackers: the good news is last years starters are gone. There were two subs in last year's game who did well I thought, but I can't remember their names. Sorry.

Coach: You have a good one, maybe a great one, time will tell. Speaking of time, give this team some time. Don't expect a lot out of them for the first half of the year. But by the second half of the year I think you will be please with the way they play, not necessarily their record.

I just came back from LA this AM and spent the last two weeks at SC's practices. I am pumped for the season to start. Remember, I am pulling for you guys. Go Big Red.

    Fight On!

PS I see you are playing Western Michigan. I didn't know that was a team? I thought it was the left side of the Big House! You will kill those bleachers!

  2. So...

Any idea what the offseason workouts will be like?

    Building Strength vs. speed???

It has to be both if you want to compete on the highest level. That's what you're going to see. I would be interested in seeing your new strength coach's drills. Fortunately this is the one thing you can work on immediately without waiting for spring and little NCAA restrictions. You can get a lot of "voluntary" work in by the players.

  3. Henry Ford once said, "You can paint my cars any color you want as long as it is black" With that in mind, from my "outsider" point of view, your uniforms can be any color you want as long as they are white.

  4. The Omaha World Herald also had a pretty good article in a similar vein: link

Reading this article you can see how Bo can relate to the Nebraska tradition. Its basically what he has known all his life, just transferring the same values he learned from the steel valley to the great plains.

Dog Pack Attacks Gator In TEXAS

At times nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.

The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the "apex predator", can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and "survival of the pack mentality" bred into the canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine. Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third dog attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

    Not for the squeamish...

I have a 90 lb big breed German Shepherd. She wouldn't stand a chance against this vicious pack. Although symbolic, I can't help but wonder if this is a sign of Florida's season next year?

  6. For all you who serve, risk your lives, go through hard times, cold, hunger, fear, loneliness, heat, being dirty, eating what you can scrounge, THANKS!

I spent two Thanksgivings, one Christmas, and 15 months away from my family and friends in my tour of duty, I know what you are going through.

Welcome into family of those who served. We have a comradeship that few can share.

I hope you return to those who love you, and appreciate them more than ever before.

I hope you have a great football season to come home to.

    I salute YOU.

    Keep up the fire!

  7. Its been great knowing you guys/gals this year. Too bad it had to be so tough. Thanks for welcoming me even though we didn't see eye to eye all the time. At least you have a new start for next year with BO, so celebrate the the true meaning of Christmas with your friends and especially your family. GBR/Fight On!

  8. This debate happens all the time on messageboards. Makes me laugh.

Turns out, it's entirely dependent on where you live as to what is "the best". Not to mention arguing about personal preferences is, well, pointless. ;)

    Yeah, Dave, but its fun!

  9. No wonder LSU and SC's defense are so sim, didn't know that Pelini was an assistant LB coach for Pete Carroll in NE.

I made a post on another thread that was sent to "rumorville" where I mentioned Pete Carroll mentored Bo earlier in his career.

One of Pete's mentor's was then NC State coach Monte Kiffen, thus his son's,Lane Kiffen, connection to SC as OC until this year when he went to Oakland as head coach. App State's coach, Jerry Moore, was mentored by Dr. Tom. There are a lot of coaches out there who learned or were influenced by another coach that most of us are just unaware of.

  10. With all the "woe is me recruiting talk," I thought I would point out how our recruiting losses this season will not effect the '08 season. The future of NU's recruiting will be contingent upon our '08 season and beyond. if we win next season, the recruiting will take care of itself. Our '08 class will mean very little on the field.

QB- Ganz, Lee or Witt - fine here

RB- Lucky (if he stays), Castille, Helu, Glenn, Wilson, Mendoza - fine here

    LT- Burkes

    RT- Murtha

    LG- Slauson, Huff

    RG- Hickman or Huff

    C- Christensen, Hickman, Henry

    O-line is fine!!

    TE- Teafatiller, Young, Hetzer

WR, Swift, Peterson, Holt, Paul, Gillelyen, Henry

    DE- Potter, Allen

    DT- Dixon, Moore

    NG- Suh, Barfield

    DE- Kuli( if he signs)(turner)

OLB- Larry Asante- I believe Pelini will move him to his natural position, Stafford

    ILB- Dillard, Covey

    OLB- Lawrence, Washington

CB- Anthony Blue (Future All-big 12), West

    CB- Armando Murillo, Shawn Sullivan

    SS- Thenarse, Amukamara

    FS, Major Culbert, Hagg

My point is the only position that will be effected by the '08 recruiting class is D-End. I think Simi Kuli could come in and start. Other than that, our recruits will make very little difference in '08.

That means, the real recruiting heats up for '09. Our results on the field or perceived improvement will greatly effect the '09 class. If Simi goes elsewhere, that's reason to fret. Otherwise, the '08 class won't be that bad overall. We were much worse off in '04.

I think your offensive back field is clearly the strength of this team next year, with or without Lucky. I think you will have an outstanding backfield either way. O-Line looks solid, and really had some success this year.

The D-line was your big question mark going into last year, and unfortunately the answer wasn't very good. The entire defense will need a major overhaul. Those guys will have to quickly get over being shell shocked this season.

    Good luck next year.

  12. Ah, the age-old fast food debate. I'll settle this here and now:

    Culver's > everywhere else > Wendy's.

Nope. In and Out in Calli! :box

Lived in TX and CA. Whataburger wins. :horns2

  13. USC coach Carroll talks up staff members

    By Scott Wolf, Staff Writer

Article Last Updated: 12/04/2007 10:45:31 PM PST

USC coach Pete Carroll is recruiting this week but he's also trying to help members of his staff get better jobs.

Carroll has recommended secondary coach Demetrice Martin, who is a graduate assistant and several other staff members for potential openings at Nebraska with new coach Bo Pelini.

Carroll was a mentor to Pelini and hired him as an assistant with the New England Patriots.

"I'm trying to help some guys that deserve it and are good coaches," Carroll said.

  14. Those guys hate people in "fly over country". Especially those of us in the "southern end of that" aka Alabama. They think nobody matters outside of the east and west coast.

I have to reiterate this as well. This is something that I still can't get over. People are always talking about the SEC and east coast this and west coast that, but what they fail to realize is that nearly all the top 10 winningest programs come from the central states. The only coastal team that comes close would probably be USC and they are probably around 10th on that list. When I think of college football, programs like Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Alabama, Ohio St., Oklahoma, and Penn St. come to mind!

I'm not sure, but off the top of my head, I think USC is just behind Nebraska in all time wins.

  15. ...It takes time to fall and it takes time to rise....

    skers?!?!?

Seriously...wasn't it just a year ago we were all excited about going to the Big XII CCG? It only took a year to tear it down...

Why can't we turn it around just as fast? Take a look at what Arizona State did this year...

ASU is a good example "SkerMin8r",get a good coach: you will get an immediate turn around. As far has playing with Callahan's players, Pete Carroll inherited Hacket's players who were unheralded but one was Carson Palmer whom Norm Chow and PC made into a Heisman. If you get a great coach, you will know it the first year. It may not translate into the "W" column that first year but it will in the second. ASU and USC are just recent examples. I think using Win/Lose as your yardstick doesn't tell whole the story.
