  1. "All" that anyone says? No. But definitely the first thing that anyone says.

Bottom line: His record was not impressive at Oregon State. At all. Dude is 61 years old. You and I both know that the #1 attribute that brought him to Lincoln was that he is the anti-Bo in the personality department. The rationale is that he will be a class act, will be a good role model for the kids, and help heal the wounds in the program.

I totally get and support that logic, but if the predominant reason you hire Riley as the head coach is not his Xs and Os but his personality, then by that same logic, you have to surround him with elite coaches. I find it very hard to believe that Banker is, coincidentally, the best defensive coordinator for the Nebraska job. I find it even more unlikely given that we have actual data on Banker and it is not bowling anyone over.

I don't give a flying F that it's natural/unremarkable/typical/routine/normal/understandable for coaches to hire guys they are comfortable with. For once in 12 years, can we have a head coach that goes out of his g'damn comfort zone and brings in top-flight coordinators instead of defaulting to the guys he's "comfortable" with? Is that too much to freaking ask?

If Eichorst is a Moneyball guy, I doubt Mike Riley's personality was the #1 thing on his mind. It's a nice thing to have, though, when you're trying to lift a noxious culture like the one enshrouding Lincoln at the moment.

I agree with the second bolded part. I do not care––at all––that it's common practice to keep old faithfuls around; the question is will it work at Nebraska, right now, today? Thing about Banker is he's qualified. Riley was given this job and a part of it is to make these decisions.

  2.

Could it be that some of you are so anti Bo Pelini and his crew that ANYONE who comes in here is an automatic upgrade.

DING DING DING...we have a winner. There are folks so anti-Bo that when a potentially s****y hire is staring them in the face, they choose not to see it.

I was willing to give the Riley hire a chance, provided the right coordinators and staff showed up under him--again, our AD said money wasn't a concern.

But when Riley is bringing his defensive buddies from OSU with him...the same ones that choked against Eastern Washington, NOT Wisky, and the same ones the OSU fans wanted run out on a rail for incompetence...it's becoming clear this is quickly becoming a s****y hire and the mistake to end all mistakes with this progam.

Yes, I am more excited about anyone's first year than I would be for a Bo Pelini eighth. And that would hold if the entire OSU staff came to Lincoln and brought their entire recruiting class with them.

Bo Pelini was judged on his performace as the Nebraska Coach. Riley is being judged on speculation, since he's only been the HC here for two days. The two things are totally different.

Also, before you Bo Pelini supporters get too critical of Riley's staff, let's remember who was on Bo's staff:

    • His brother
    • A golf coach
    • An intern
    • Another intern

You may not like Riley bringing coaches from OSU, but at least they are experienced coaches.

    +1

You can add a couple bullet points. First-time offensive coordinator, first-time defensive coordinator.

Whatever people want to make of Riley's staff choices, they cannot say––at least at this point––that he is hiring under-qualified candidates. These people have years of experience doing the things they'll be doing here. They'll be inheriting enough talent to challenge for the B1G West. Eichorst hired a guy who he firmly believes knows how to run an organization.

I want to see what the final roster looks like, and hear more on what Riley intends to implement offensively and defensively.

  3. Buffet and Perlman share a love for atheism so don't look for any buyout- fun tidbit- Perlman (admin) told Coach Bo that he could not have his priest on the sideline while he wore his collar- Bo told admin- if he can't wear the collar, I won't wear the red.

    Score one for the Crusades

I know it's Silly Season on Huskerboard, but this is one of the most nonsensical things I've read. In every aspect.

  4. I don't understand a lot of the consternation in this thread. OF COURSE Riley is going to bring in at least a few of his assistants. So far I counted four, and all but one of them are only rumored. If I remember right, NCAA rules allow 9 assistant coaches in addition to Riley. How is bringing four of your guys and going outside for the rest "bringing his entire staff"? Looks to me like he's bringing half his staff––at most.

  5. I think it's more about fit and managing benefits and deficits than finding the "best" coach. Could a coach that's used to spending all of his time recruiting in fertile SEC territory really be a guaranteed success at a place like Nebraska? Or do we need someone who is experienced in dealing with natural disadvantages? To a certain extent I think it all depends on the person. I don't have a better answer to the question.

  6.

I wouldn't tattoo "lock" on my arm over a rumor like this, but as rumors go, it's either really creative, or really close to the decision-making process.

So purely hypothetical question for ya Husker_x. It's for a buddy I know. More like a coworker I ran into...

Anyway, let's say someone was at the tattoo parlor all day getting full-back ink. In Old English letters, shoulder to shoulder was "OC Frost HC" and below that, again full-back ink, was a really sweet black ink outline of Frost's head shot. Vertically along the left side it said "Husker" and vertically on the right side "Power" (both black outline, red fill).

Would that be something you would think is reasonable over this rumor?!?!? Again just asking for a buddy. Appreciate your thoughts.

I think your friend may need to see somebody.

according to the patient I just took care of. She works at the AD dept and is friends with our AD's secretary.

I asked her specifics, and before you doubt, let me just say, she's like me; she knows her sports and football. She wasn't the type to be more interested in non relevant crap. She is a Husker football fan through and through.

I asked her, "Is Scott Frost coming to NU as our new OC?"

She said, "Yes, BUT it depends on IF Frost accepts the offer tonight or early Sat. that is what i've heard from people in the AD dept. It's part of the Riley hire and will be announced Sat. so Frost can play tonight's Pac 12 Championship Game without any distraction."

I asked her IF Frost accepts, "how long will Riley be HC before handing the reigns over to Frost?"

She said, "the word is about 5 years, but I don't know if that is in stone or not."

I asked her, "how much will Frost be offered?"

She said, "something close to Beck's, maybe more."

I said, "I've heard 7 figures, is that accurate?"

She said, "yea, that certainly could be the plan."

I asked her about Orgeron and if he's been brought as a DL or DC by Riley.

She said, "I have not heard that yet, but I do know who he is and could be a possibility."

I said, "Have you met Coach Riley yet?"

She said, "Yes, he's a very nice guy and everyone was impressed."

I asked her what she thought of Bo.

She said, "He was always pleasant to me and I have no issues with him personally. I know that's not the perception of many NU fans."

That's all I got but felt it was from an accurate source. She was nice to share this with me and I promised her I wouldn't text her every day to get new info.

I guess we'll see how this plays out.

    GO DUCKS!

Not to be a Debbie downer about the rumor, but the post could've been taken down due to the fact that it may be violating HIPAA....he did state that he helped a patient that worked in the Admin Dept. At Neb...should've never stated that...

    Just a thought...

No worries. I was never up to begin with. It would be a very nice Christmas present, but I don't know of any really solid info that indicates it will happen.

  8.

He'll probably keep most of his staff from OSU.

He's a small town down home loyal guy.

This is how it works in CFB...a HC gets his "guys" who follow him and then the HC feels the need to reward their loyalty.

If there is any truth to the rumors that Eichorst told Bo to can his staff or walk, then I think it's quite likely the Nebraska job came with the caveat that Reilly would not just shoehorn his buddies in at Nebraska, but would instead scour the country for the very best we can get. Everybody seems to agree that this hire has the potential to go from "meh" to "sweet!" if and only if Reilly brings top assistants in to help him run the day to day. Everything Reilly has said suggests he understands that responsibility.

I don't think it would have been a "this is our guy" interview if Riley's answer to questions about staff choices was: "Well . . . I plan on working with the people I've always worked with because that's the way I've always done it."

Staff is the key here. He's got a chance to do things he could have never done at Oregon State. Seize this opportunity.

  10.

“I’m glad to know that, I suppose,” Riley said with a smile. That’s pretty neat.”

Riley and Orgeron were on the same staff at USC from 1996-98 – Riley as offensive coordinator, Orgeron as defensive line coach. Riley said his relationship with Orgeron is “good, no doubt about that.”

Riley said he likes his staff at Oregon State, but that he wasn’t sure who would follow him to Lincoln, and who wouldn’t.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen at all in that regard," Riley said. "But I’m going to try to open the door a little bit of possibilities, and that (Orgeron) is a good idea.”

    Get ready, recruiting geeks.

  12. So I'm assuming he's not coming here:

Mike Riley on @SiriusXMCollege says he would highly recommend defensive coordinator Mark Banker for the head coaching job at Oregon State.

With what we're paying Mike, we need to go out and knock the coordinator search into the stratosphere on both sides of the ball. Mike seems plenty clever to have figured out that with the resources at his disposal, and the scope of the operation he's inherited, he has the right––and frankly, the obligation––to delegate responsibilities to the best possible people.

Along those lines, I love the part in his presser where he committed to a special teams coach. Phenomenal idea.

  13. Given he's no spring chicken... doesn't this seem like a logical path ? (ie Frost as assistant head coach/OC)

The thing is he's a health enthusiast. He does yoga, cycles, eats well. There was a national reporter (name escapes me) on Severe's podcast. She's personal friends with the family. I'm not so sure the agism argument is going to hold up long.
