  1. The only thing I gleaned from today's rumor stew is that everyone who posts them fundamentally disagrees with everyone else, and there is a blanket of silence over the press and the administration. Doesn't inspire much confidence in any predictions.

  2.

Difficult to believe that something hasn't leaked one way or another by now

Not if you're dealing with pros.

Coaching changes are the worst kept secrets in sports. Someone always leaks it.

Our AD is routinely compared to a groundhog. This might be an exception. It also might not be. Time will tell, and very soon at that.

  3.

I mean the clock is running on this not-a-source's value to the Huskerboard community. But like Hedley said, these situations are fluid, involve a lot of people with sway, and depend (possibly) on factors outside of anyone's control. And to be fair, the guy did say on the last page:

Things will be changing soon. Bo will be fired this weekend, most likely tomorrow

It's Saturday afternoon. If Monday noon comes around and there's nothing more concrete and no word from the AD's office, we'll have compiled a lot of unpleasant information. That this thread turned out to be click-bait would, in those circumstances, be the least of our worries.

After last seasons Iowa game, Ive learned to take the people who claim to be "insiders" words with a grain of salt. This sock puppet guy needs an alias for his alias. Just in case hes wrong, his real alias wont lose credibility.

The only person I trusted with inside information on this board was skers. His information was usually correct 60-70% of the time. But he is not here at the moment, so I guess we have to deal with the sock puppet and hedley...

I learned my lesson back in the day, and have very little confidence in anyone claiming "insider" status (I think very few people know anyone high enough up the chain to speak with any kind of certainty). However, "By their fruits you shall know them." If the dude turns out to be plugged into the right sources, the facts will establish it. If not, they won't. He did us a favor by self-imposing a very reasonable timetable on his credibility. I respect that.

The Sock ain't takin' no credit if things turn out to be right. The Sock knows nothin', he's just repeatin' what he's told by folks kind enuf to share. Don't go elevatin' The Sock as somethin' important. He ain't.

Dont worry, Im not. I knew u were full of sh#t when you said Harbough was a top choice.

And now the presser moved from today til tom. And then if not tom, the next day. And then if not the next day, the next day and so on...

    Tick tock.

I dont know what this is alluding to, but Im not saying there wont be a press conference. But you dont have to act like youre some kind of "insider" to make predictions like this. First he said it would be today, now he says tom. Hell, I could say the same thing and tell all you I got it from someone "in the know"

  6. The only statement that will be made by keeping Bo is that the bar has definitely been lowered. Shawn Eichorst and the powers that be simply are happy if the seats are filled and not in restoring some respect to once was a pretty mighty/great program.

    +1

I hope that's how they see it, because it's exactly how it is. It's outrageous to expect hardworking people to pay money––or worse, spend their time––on this product. Supporting the status quo is not an option. If Bo hadn't already blown his coordinator hires, he would have an out here. Unfortunately he's given no indication that he's able or willing to seriously examine the staff or his philosophy, or make intelligent choices when the chance comes around, so that's most likely a dead end. That leaves one option.

We're rapidly reaching Callahan-esque levels of word watching. Nothing any of these coaches say is going to be taken well for the foreseeable future.

Is that due to an irrational fanbase, or that words no longer carry weight with the fanbase given the track record?

    A combination of both.

I'm in a weird place where I can see the rationality of all sides here. Barney's right - this is an accomplishment and it's not the worst thing in the world. But those who want his head are right - the bumblery which led us to this particular place cannot go on. The levels of wrong are heavily nuanced.

I agree, except the #9wins crowd is downright superstitious about the number and how they use it. The team played just as poorly for most of the game yesterday as they have for the past four seasons. If we are truly down to "it's not the worst thing in the world" thinking, we're already entering Apathyville. And that's a problem.

The bolded part, to me, is synonymous with coaching change. It doesn't make any sense to expect the same cast of characters to fix systemic problems that go on year after year, regardless of who's playing or how talented they are.

Nine wins is better than eight, and a lot better than seven. But in our specific situation, it's not the real issue, and shouldn't be elevated to the Trump Card status it's perceived to have.

  8. “Going to a bowl! Nine wins! What do you think of that s---!?” Nebraska co-offensive line coach Barney Cotton crowed Friday as he jogged to the elevator after the Huskers’ 37-34 overtime victory against Iowa.

Cotton said it just loud enough for those around him to hear, although to no one in particular. Of course, he was clearly aware of reporters in his presence.

Two other coaches, Ross Els and Tim Beck, kept their focus ahead, not making eye contact, on their way to the elevator.

    Link.

  9. I've defended Sipple and can sort of empathize with the guy, but this column is just silly.

He starts off by saying you won't hear much Bo speculation from him; the discussion "gets old." Yet a few paragraphs later he does return to it.

By the way, Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst hasn't tipped his hand on the Pelini matter, according to a source close to the situation.

He brings it up again further down. Pelini's future is the single biggest issue facing Nebraska athletics. Period. There's a decision to be made and the athletic director has not made it. But the discussion is old? After the last game of the regular season? Right when most schools would announce the new direction the program is about to take should there be one?

    It gets worse.

Congrats on the Heroes Trophy and good luck in the Holiday Bowl. Yippee!

I've come to disdain the snark. Yeah, of course, I think Pelini's program needs to win a conference championship soon. Who doesn't think so? But I can appreciate the chase. I can appreciate a group of coaches and players who this week — yes, this week — had their best week of practice of the season, according to junior cornerback Daniel Davie.

We're not in the chase. Or the hunt. We're not anywhere close. Our top conference rival has blown us off the field the last two times we played them, we drop winnable games every year, and a team can't plan on making a living being down 24-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter. After seven years of Pelini, we finished in the middle of the B1G West standings. Why wasn't that part included?

And why in God's name are you so enamored with a player saying the team had its best week of practice? Shouldn't it cause you alarm? You watched the game, right? We were a comedy of errors yet again. There's no snark in saying it. I'm happy we won, but for Sipple to sit there and pretend like this was some great achievement is belittling to the program and his readers.

Iowa loses games like this all the time in exactly this fashion. I picked them to win, then they turned the ball over four times in the first half and blew a gargantuan third-quarter lead at home. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a rally/overtime victory. But to gush over it and swallow the "we had our best week of practice line" (what the hell is Davie supposed to say under the circumstances?) is beneath you.

  10.

I really hope you guys realize I was being sarcastic. Firing Bo would be idiotic.

No, it would be the right decision for the program moving forward.

Nope. It will make us a joke, just like in 2003. And we'll get another sh**ty coach like Callahan. Live through 5-7 seasons, fire him, and get a coach like Bo that can take us to the promised land but because it takes longer than a few years we fire him after winning seasons. Then we get a sh**ty coach..... repeat ad infinitum.

A false analogy followed by an absurdity followed by an avalanche of defeatist nonsense.

It's about the money, Lebowski. There are plenty of confident, successful coaches who will be presented with several million reasons to take the reins of a program like Nebraska. They won't exactly be walking into a locker room empty of talent, and depending on the hire, we may gain as much as we lose from the current class––but that's a conversation for down the road. There is an element of risk. No ignoring that. But I think you may be underestimating the market on this one.

  11.

Absolutely not. The Iowa game changed nothing, and aside from the momentary elation of winning a game in overtime, what else about that game gave you any positive indications about our prospects next season?

We're about on par with Iowa under Pelini. Thanks to electric players like DPE, we are able to overcome typical Pelini team mistakes and eek out a victory. I want a team that just goes out and wins the games they should, and stays competitive against equal or better talent.

Not interested in seeing another year of this. As a program, we expect more. Clean house, reenergize the fanbase, and move forward.

Agree 100 percent. Next year's apathy will be at an all time high if he sticks around.

A coaching change would instantly fix that apathy (short-term, results-dependent, of course), and I'd add that with the talent we have coming back, with proper coaching we're right in the thick of the conference race. If this staff is retained as is, we're just screwing ourselves out of however much it takes to pay them for another year (plus extensions).

  12. Absolutely not. The Iowa game changed nothing, and aside from the momentary elation of winning a game in overtime, what else about that game gave you any positive indications about our prospects next season?

  13. Great fourth-quarter effort. Defense got dialed in and we fought all the way to the end. Definitely not a team I wanted to lose to. Hawk fans would be jawing until the end of time.

But we did not learn anything, because the picture has not changed. We played a very mediocre ball club and despite four takeaways, it took overtime to edge them out. All of the issues––every one––that have plagued the Pelni era were on full display. If Eichorst looks to this game as a benchmark, the program is in worse shape than we thought.

  14.

I remember the days when Nebraska would get beat, I would be in a bad mood until Wednesday. Now, I'm so apathetic about Nebraska football that by the time the postgame show is over, I've mainly forgotten about the loss.

Bo, his team, his coaches, his players - they have all taken so much of the joy and emotion out of Nebraska football for me. And I know I'm not alone in that feeling.

This is my 2nd year of feeling like this

There is some feeling left. It's rage at the idea that Pelni might be retained at the end of the season. If that were to happen, I do think I would lose my sh#t pretty bad.

  15. If Bos job is on the line for this game then our AD needs fired as well. Beating Iowa means nothing in the big picture of things.

Agree 100%. Of course I don't want to lose to Iowa. I think we will, for the same reasons I thought we would lose to Minnesota. But frankly it's irrelevant. I have no hope whatsoever for this program to succeed under Bo Pelini. The air has been too toxic for too long and when he's been handed opportunity after opportunity to fix things via meaningful staff changes, he has failed to capitalize.

This program needs a fresh start badly. If Eichorst is dumb enough to think a win at Kinnick changes the fundamental picture, add him to the chopping block for all I care.

  16. Even if all you get is a frosty smile in response, it's better than not sending anything. The fans need to pile on top of the newspapers, radio, and national press to create an unescapable vortex for Eichorst and the boosters.

Option A: Bring in a real coaching staff to run the football program.

Option B: There is no option B.

Hey, I'm all for stealing another Colorado State coach :-)

At this rate, Colorado State could become a farm school for Nebraska coaches...

Guys I live in Lafayette and I have been to enough UL-L games to know that we do not want Hudspeth. Good coach, not a good match.

    Try telling Hudspethy Lamarr that.

And the more I read on Jim McElwain, the more I want him in Lincoln yesterday. Though I would still be content for Bo to drawn down his ego a bit and make some quality position/coordinator changes.

I would be along with you except I don't think that's possible. When Bo hired Beck and Pap, I wrote then that these hires were on his head. We have the resources to get anyone; Pelini gets Beck and Pap. We're not playing little league here. Time is of the essence. I think Bo's had his chance and blown it.
