Someone advocating that a contract be reneged upon should not be preaching accountability. 

I am unable to adequately express my confusion regarding the willful misunderstanding of the consequences of such behavior. 

Is it Las Vegas or offshore betting site? People don't seem to understand the job of line setters and prop bet oddsmakers isn't really to predict an outcome as close as possible, they are tasked with manipulating gamblers to bet on either side of a contest or create payoffs that spread money around to all the choices. There is a lot of psychology that goes into the point spreads. With only one choice of Scott Frost to NU, I don't understand the point of a wager being offered. Maybe they can make enough interest on the monies wagered before an announcement is made to still come out ahead if Coach Frost accepts an offer from Nebraska. Other than that, I don't see why this wager would even be offered.

I love the "if players(that I don't know, I haven't known and will never know) don't do what I think is best for them, then THEY don't see the big picture, can't deal with change and are general slackers that will never succeed" hypocritical point of view. Change can be dealt with in an infinite number of ways, one is welcome to disagree with choices made, but credibility could suffer. If you still have the same job that you started with out of college, your criticism is consistent, if you've changed jobs once in your life, STFU. 

LOL. Announcer Mark Followill is local Dallas Mavericks announcer. I did not know he announced football at all. I can't hear in the bar, but he's good at basketball.

I wouldn't find any joy in watching any games if I was pessimistic about the season. I would use "cautiously optimistic". You can put me down for that every year.

I just couldn't do that to Flips, the local watering hole where the North Texas Nebraskans basically take half the establishment over on gamedays. If I get BTN, their revenue would dip, sharply.

I just listened to the radio broadcast, don't have Big10 network. It did not sound good. I don't understand the regression of certain players on defense. I question the experience of the current staff. Experience at what? Did he throw Tommy under the bus in the post game press conference? It cost a lot of money to regress.

DLIII makes an appearance, even. My game has never been more Tiger-like. I just can't muster any extra interest for Fed-Ex Cup. I doesn't affect viewership in any way. Football will always rule autumn. Oh well. I'm going to keep an eye out for a similar thread next year. I think I can offer some insight.

DJ needs to lay off the cola and quit, ummmm, getting too friendly with other players' wives. Wayne's liable to cross check him. To be fair, DJ has really played well for the most part this year. He has a lot of mental scars in majors, though.

Speaking of banned posters, there are several members that were very prominent that I don't see anymore. I usually get really busy in the spring and don't get a chance to follow the 'board during that time of year. Did something happen after the regime change? I've heard mention of "the purge". Were there a lot of casualties? Off the top of my head NUPolo-something or other, and... dammit, I seem to know posters more by their avatar than by their name. Oh well, it doesn't really matter, just curious.

Nate Gerry- I think he will need to have a good game, patrolling the air and helping with the run will be important.

Tommy Armstrong- I think there will be a lot of guys open, he just needs to make the right type of throw, use some touch at times. It wouldn't surprise me to see some screen passes getting big plays.

No but it's a much more accurate predictor of future success than initial struggles. Off of this years top 10 in the coaches poll, each of these coaches improved on the previous years record.

5. Oregon - Mark Helfrich

7 out of 10 had better records than their predecessor, 1 was a tie (Rich) and Helfrich and Sark each had 1 less win. While year one success isn't the be all, end all, it's a pretty good indicator.

 

That's an erroneous conclusion based on a sample of teams that are, by being in the top ten, successful. Try the same exercise with teams currently ranked in the bottom ten and see how their most-recent coaching changes went. I'm guessing the picture won't look so rosy.

 

I would think, we're closer to the top 10 than the bottom ten. Plus, isn't that what we're aiming for? Look at what the formula is for success, then try to replicate it?

 

We have resources that the bottom feeders do not, and even Bo out recruited our divisional peers by a fair margin. We have facilities, fan support, and more money than we need. Riley and the staff are showing that Bo's whining about recruiting wasn't as big of a deal as he made it out to be.

 

I can continue going through the top 25, and document it, but by looking over that list, very few coaches in the top 25 regressed in year one over their predecessor. Obviously, our threshold is higher than most of those teams, but it statistically, if the new guys match or exceed the win total, the chances of them being successful is greater.

 

A couple things here: How many of these coaches needed to win 9+ to match or exceed their predecessor?

I think a lack of success, in terms of win total, in the first year of Nebraska's particular situation would be... difficult. The firing of Solich to bring in someone that was perceived to be better is what split the fan base in the first place. I feel that a drop in wins this year would bring something of a deja-vu for a lot of fans. If Mr. Riley isn't successful early, the pressure will be on and he will be made keenly aware of what is expected at N.U. Oregon State we are not. If he is not successful, we have once again fired a relatively successful coach because we think we deserve better. I think it would behoove us to remain patient, but, we have difficulties with patience. So I think first season success is very important. The talent is there to win at least 9, it's been proven several times by an inferior coach. I don't think Mr. Riley was hired because he has a nice smile. He was hired, at the very least, to maintain current measurable standards and maintain them with a nice smile. I'm sorry, but progress means different things to different people, so I will find it difficult to find progress with 7 or 8 wins, regardless of the amount of Whitestrips applied to his chicklets, or how well the team sings kumbaya.

I want Mike Riley to be successful. I wanted Pelini to be successful and I wanted Callahan to be successful. I was actually one of the last holdouts on Callahan. I'm stubbornly optimistic. It's just I know most Nebraska fans are not that patient and at least half seem to think that they know more than any given coach. I don't care what scheme we run, as long as it fits our personnel and works. I would think for a scheme to work, it needs to fit what we have, so stating the obvious there, but there are many(you know who you are) that want to win a certain way. Mention the WCO and suddenly I find myself dodging piles of vomit. I, for one, don't care how we do it, as long as it gets done. I appreciate football innovation, as well as proven tradition. It's a very good spectator sport.

Blowouts gonna blowout, sometimes. Like haters gonna hate. It happens to the best of them. Do I want to see my beloved Huskers on the wrong end of one? Hell, no! But they will happen. So I don't necessarily think if we get blownout once that all is lost and we need to start looking again, but if N.U. avoids the wrong end of one and wins 8 with a smile and a tip of the cap, I'm not sure I can call that progress, either.

I guess I think it will be difficult to keep firing 9 win coaches and remain successful as a program. Not that I think Pelini should have been retained, necessarily, it's that we are in a unique situation that could set the football program back to the Callahan era. When I say unique, I mean it in several different ways. Recruiting, expectations, history and tradition, location relative to major football populations, fan interest and general fan acumen, gameday experience and emphasis on academics are just a few things that I believe sets Nebraska apart from any other program. I feel Osborne spoiled us. He was so effing good!

I guess no one has shot 70 one day and then 85 the next, on the same course from the same tees... It would be fun to always shoot 72, but human performance doesn't work that way. If a few key players have off days or even a few off plays in any given game, a "blowout" could occur. In a retrospective hypothetical, I would keep the 408 if we beat Minnesota.

As far as OP, I believe we need to win at least as much. If nothing else, to validate Mr. Riley as a competent coach that will use the tools available to maximize results. I've been told that is one of his strengths, versatility. "Making progress" is a pretty nebulous term that can be spun in infinite ways. "Yes, we only won 3 games, but we didn't get blown out.... Progress was made, IMHO"

I actually like Adidas' golf apparel as well as most of their shoes. I'd be interested to know the opinions of people if the labels on the designs from Nike and Adidas were switched if they'd be singing the same song.

Well.. the Under Armor stuff is hard to keep in stock in our Pro Shop. Kinda skewed, as we are in a DFW suburb and Jordan Spieth is beyond popular. Everything U/A, shoes, shirts, socks, I would imagine their underwear would be selling as well, if available.

As far as Nebraska's choices, any company can give us our traditional look, which seems to be desired by a majority of fans. I don't see our base look changing much. How much is a better looking alternate uniform worth?

 

 

When he was the DC with the Cowboys, they ranked #9 in total defense. I think he may know what he is doing.

I am not trying to say he isn't qualified, but when he was DC for the Cowboys, he wasn't the guy running the defense. Wade Phillips was the HC and real defensive coordinator, while Jason Garret ran the offense.

 

I think this is a good hire overall. I am not worried about his numerous stops in his past. That's life as an assistant coach in football.

Pretty much what I was saying. He also wasn't "running" the defense in Houston. the only worry is that he likes the 3-4 and we aren't running that. Shouldn't be too big of a concern though.

 

He was the guy teaching the fundamentals and schemes directly to the players while under Wade. Phillips was a good designer and schemer, but not real good at player interaction, I kind of thought Stewart was great at communicating with players at Dallas. Someone pointed out Mike Riley had Stewart on his staff at San Diego Chargers, so he knows what to expect. Pretty synchronistic, if you ask me.

Watson and/or Beck may have been shortchanged by the fan base but it is hard to tell since they worked under meglamaniac Bo. I follow the gist of your OP until you start to lump Pelini in with those OC's. I think it's been pretty well exhibited that problems number 1 through 45 began directly with Bo. Whether or not Watson or Beck were a little better than generally considered is sort of beside the point at this juncture. We'll never know what they might've been able to do at Nebraska. All we know is it sure didn't seem real special while they were here.

I guess I'm trying to illustrate the validity or lack thereof, of the majority opinion of the Husker fanbase and how that could affect future hires. Again, I don't think it was all Bo's fault. 70% was his, but he sure went persona non grata in a heartbeat. Embarrassing losses will do that. I really did not like the screaming down of players on the sideline. This year's Wisconsin game was the final nail in the coffinbed, I think. I'm not sure what was more embarrassing, either, the game or the sideline antics.

I always thought Beck could be outstanding. From what I see though is Beck has to allow his great players to make him look great. It appeared there was some tunnel vision going on though. I always thought he did a great job of having a plan laid out, but just wasn't able to adjust it as he went. For instance the thing that drove me nuts was situations where they got a lead or it felt like the team was just on the verge of putting the other team away and the last thing we need is a quick 3 and out. Same thing when the D gave up long tiring drive, last thing needed is a quick 3 and out. Then bang, 3 quick in-completions and the defense is right back on the field and the other team swings the momentum their way. It was almost like there was a plan we're sticking to it no matter what, no matter the game situation. Was frustrating to watch.

This is a little confusing. A lot of the complaints centered on "imposing our will on the other team", "pound the rock", and then the inevitable comparison to the mid 90s teams that did just that. We had the Jimmys and Joes to do that. Now, more teams have the Jimmys and Joes. I feel a diverse offense is preferable to running a system that is dependent on superior talent. I get that Bo and Watson were oil and water. The offense was the one(only?) thing from Callahan that did not need fixing. Bo "fixed" something that wasn't broken.

I guess I was trying to illustrate that as a fan base, I feel we are starting to become a hurdle, as opposed to an asset, for future coaching hires. I don't live in NE anymore, so I'm not as privy to the local perception, but I do get feedback from fans of many other teams. The perception of most of those fans(admittedly a small sample) is that Husker fans live in the past. Expectations are way too high. That is not to say expecting a championship is wrong, it's just that expecting things in x amount of time might be unrealistic. It took T.O. 20+ years before he won a National Championship. Many Big 8 titles, and played in many big bowl games, but times have changed. We need to beat more than just Oklahoma to get where we want. I think that in the current climate, we would have fired Tom Osborne after 5 years. Times change and if gratification isn't instant than it's irrelevant.

Bo made his own bed, and it was nails. We sharpened the points and the Athletic Department provided the wood to pound the nails through. I don't think our current state of affairs comes down to just a few people.

What do you think about someone like Bobby Knight? He won a lot, graduated a high % of his players, but was(is) a complete a-hole. I know his son, Tim. He has golf tournament at a course I worked at. I have chatted with both, at length, several times, so this is my personal opinion and not something developed from a distance based off of media portrayal.

Hypothetical: We win Big 10 in 2 years, play in BCS bowl but no N.C., our football graduation rate drops 15%. Should we keep Riley or fire Riley? Assuming that we have similar rates of underclassmen declaring for NFL. Do we want to be Alabama?

All apologies, I'm having difficulty expressing myself completely and coherently. I'm just .... confused. I guess I'm having issues with all of the dichotomies. Billions of dollars in amateur athletics. Student athletes carrying the expectations of millions of people, with the power to ruin days, weeks, or even a year of people that don't have a vested interest in the outcome of a game. Gamblers not withstanding.

Texas fans are the pinnacle of College Football knowledge, so I guess that settles that.

Bridgewater was a freshman in 2011, the same year Watson arrived. They arrived at the same time. He won Big east Rookie of the Year, as well a spot on the Freshman All American team.

OK... I just gotta say something about all the fervor over coaches, past and present.

Shawn Watson is viewed by most here as a terrible coach that had no business in the profession. Couldn't develop QBs and his offense was crap. Goes to Louisville, develops Teddy Bridgewater into an NFL first round draft pick, has some success as both QB coach and offensive coordinator and moves to Texas with Charlie Strong. Remains to be seen what will happen there. Sorry, he is a pretty good coach, respected among his peers. The majority of Husker fan opinions are questionable, at best, regarding the coaching aptitude of Shawn Watson. I won't even go into his time with Gary Barnett at Northwestern and Colorado. Generally considered successful on the field. Colorado really had some issues at the end there, off the field, but that can't be laid at Watson's feet. I don't think, anyway, I don't know too much about it. Please correct me if I'm wrong and it was all his fault.

Tim Beck is viewed as an even worse coach, it would appear. Yet, defending national champion Ohio St. thought well enough of him to hire him for their offensive coordinator position. Again, it remains to be seen how it will turn out, but I will have to defer to the expertise of freaking Urban Meyer over any of the posters that I have witnessed on this message board.

It's not easy to look in the mirror sometimes. I believe these are two very good and well respected coaches, that are viewed favorably everywhere else.

I fear for Mike Riley's first loss. I'm reserving judgment until I see something. I feel the credit for keeping the recruiting class together should be shared. It would seem to me that the former staff was actually selling the University of Nebraska to the recruits, as opposed to any particular promises or position coaches or whatever angle that one can think of.

I'm ambivalent to the new staff. Put me down for a "meh". We will see what shakes out. I have no reason to expect anything more than what we have accomplished the last few years. Pretty good seasons that didn't quite finish the way a fan would like, a championship of some sort. Came close a few times(got ShortTusked once) and in general there seemed to be turmoil.

I'm not saying we should have kept Bo. Things seemed to deteriorate to the point of no return. Personally, I think the spiral started with that aTm game, that was another ref job, and the resulting issues after the game. I'm sorry to offend any Aggies(not really), but you would be hard pressed to find a more "Good ole Boy" corrupt, college environment outside the states of Mississippi and Alabama. I mean, they assault people for walking in front of The Dog. They did everything they could to minimize the fallout for their lack of bonfire skills. Something was up there and Bo was chastised for not just taking it with a smile and an "aw, shucks". I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one pissed off after that game. Aggies aren't really known for their sportsmanship, they are known more for their in your face braggadocio. I bet Cotton's testicles are still misshapen.

Anyway, I don't post a lot, I don't really enjoy all the bickering and condescension about what is essentially an entertainment related endeavor. I do read a lot here, and this is the best Husker related message board available, pay or free. I would just ask those that are so sure of the quality of this coach or that coach try and look at things without the red tint. Way too much? I know, I know... It's a Nebraska message board, everyone picks up the red tinted glasses on their way into the theater, it's just that can blind one to other parts of the movie.
