You are making a lot of assumptions in that post, but the main assumption still goes unaddressed. Again, you are assuming A) he wants to coach. B) He'd be good at coaching at a high profile Div I school. C) He'd want to coach at NU. Just because someone was a good player in a sport doesn't mean he or she will be able to coach it. Not only be able to coach, but be a head coach at a high profile university right out of the gate. All the coaches you mentioned didn't start out as head coaches at some huge college without some king of coaching at that level or higher. Hell Pelini hasn't and, if you ask me, won't be a head coach. That's all I am saying. I will never understand how some people automatically know that person A will be a good coach with no more evidence than "he was a good player". There will not be another Osborne. There won't be another Devaney. Period. Tom does want to coach at NU. And I wasnt saying bring him in to be HC now....originally i mentioned him being a running backs coach, slash, OC.....

Your referring to "us husker fans" as if you aren't part of "this fanbase" and I may speak for a few people when I say that the whole "Pelini for HC" was a heat of the moment passion, and not of rational thought. I think he just gave away that he is a troll................ My point Exactly, heat of the moment thought....thats how we will be selecting our next head coach when Callahan departs to the promise land of pro football. Tom Rathman has recruiting potiential Callahan can only dream of, talent will flock to NU. To learn the west coast offense from someone who won a superbowl surrounded by the greatest players ever in the game of pro football? Tom would have his choice in offensive coordinators, imagine Ronnie Lott putting on a clinic for our defensive backs? The best part is Rathman would be happy being the head football coach for NU for the rest of his life. No offense, but unless God is coaching at NU talent will never "flock" to NU. Talent didn't just "flock" to NU when TO was coaching and we were winning 3 NC in 4 years. How many 18 year old kids graduating high school even remember Rathman playing much less who he is? I think you might be tooting his horn just a little loud. Just because Rathman won a Superbowl under a coach who founded the West Coast offense doesn't mean much. Look at Dave Wanstadt. He was tutored under Jimmie Johnson, yet he doesn't even hold a candle to Jimmie. Notre Dame didn't hire Tim Brown as their HC even though he's done a lot for the school in terms of helping get kids to look at them. I don't believe Rathman has done this for NU. I don't doubt Rathman would be happy at NU for the rest of his life, but so would several other potential coaches. Why aren't you tooting Scott Frosts horn? He was under Walsh's watchful eye at QB for two seasons at Stanford and has some coaching background. He won a NC here at NU. Or, you could toot Tommie's horn also except for the fact that he was a flop in his first HC job. Why Rathman over some of these other guys? Yes talent did flock to NU when we were winning NCs, just before T.O. retired NU had the highest recruiting class EVER in the history of college football. i will step back and let you jump on the Calahan wagon stay there my friend....be prepared to become a browns fan. Why does everyone involve other people and use them as references? Dave Wandstat, Tim Brown, completely different and unrelated. Rathman has a longer stint with working with pro players than the afore mentioned Huskers, tons more exp. never mind im sure im dealing with someone who depends on sportscenter and the big red page for information.

thats funny....you think you could coach the HUSKERS
  4. it absolutely true, i live in tempe az, big article in the local paper. lets hope that doesnt happen! Carpenter is awful, there is nothing Erickson can do to improve his ability. So if Keller and Carpenter are playing each other that would mean NU is playing in the $#%&@*BOWL!

My thoughts exactly. I have not seen a single press clipping from anywhere (and I try to follow them as much as possible) about Callahan even mentioning a whim that he might one day return to the pros. Again, I don't doubt the possibility, but you can build your legend in a state that doesn't forget, or go to the ESPN mill where the wind blows worse than in DC. If it were me, with what they're paying me, I'd take the Huskers any day and twice on Sunday. Especially with kids. Who wants to end up in Chicago, New York, or the West Coast with kids? And USC must be razed to the ground. just so you are aware....by the time news hits the press, its too late, oh and by the way, anyone, anywhere who is usually looking for a new job, tends to not let the current employer know. coaching is a STRESSFULL job at this level. You my friend would not be able to comprehend it. In the Pros a coach does not have to wait for players to develop. They can insert ability where they need it and spend more time on the Xs and Os which is the fun part of coaching. lets see...less work more money...thats my ultimate goal in life, how about you? Okay so you just deconstructed your whole argument. Now you say Rathman is better off staying in the pros. Rathman wants to be in Nebraska, he has publicly made that clear. his passion for HUSKER football will bring and keep him here because HE IS A HUSKER!!!!!!! Tom Rathman has WON A SUPERBOWL!!!!!!!!!!!! he has nothing left to prove in the NFL. Tom enjoys coaching and developing players, Hmmmmmmm.

It's main derivative is a water-pipe and aroma therapy. Now that Nebraska has gone to the west coast offense, the logical choice is Tom Rathman, a pioneer in the offense. Callahan has great ability...i just know he wants to be in the NFL, and he will go there when given the right situation trust me. We did not hire Callahan from Wisconson, or Baylor. He came from the Raiders not far removed from a super bowl appearence. Pro football personel are watching Callahan at NU, if he turns the program around with moderate success he is going to be on the HOT list and the money will be FAT! especially if Cleveland comes calling. it would be kind of like you instantly becoming the owner of the company you work for. could you win the lottery and give half of it back? Tom Rathman wants to be a part of the Husker coaching staff...with his exp and credentials in the west coast offense NU could only benefit.

this is why intelligent people dont mess with message boards, they are solving real problems in real life or accomplishing real goals. someone on here please tell me where Callahan got his first coaching gig? where did Bo Pelini get his first head coaching job? and who in thier right mind broke down and gave Jimmy Johnson a head coaching position? how did these people become proven? not long ago half of you "brainiac" HUSKER fans wanted Bo Pelini to be the next head coach at NU..... where was his proven record? 97% of you people didnt know who Pelini was. Had it not Been for Monte Kiffin He would still be drying towels in some training room in the NFL. give me a break....80% of you people were calling for Tom Osbornes head in the early 90s, he had only one head coaching job in his life, who gave him the shot? back off with the proven record stuff. Experience is the best teacher, Rathman has been to the mountain top in pro football. He is a man who can teach pro quality technique to young pro quality players.

Husker Football should never be put into a situation where we have to take the best possible choice available. Our coaching and system should lead the way in college football much like the option of old. Other universities should be looking @ our assistants to possibly be head coaches. Pete Carroll is set lets discontinue using him an an example, what pro jobs has been offerd to him that is better than where he is @? Callahan is going to leave, that im certian, being GOD in Nebraska is only appealing to....a nebraskan? Whats wrong with securing our future with the best possible choice now? not only is Tom a Cornhusker, he knows the west coast from a championship field level. Tom wants to come to Nebraska, Callahan wants the Cleveland Browns Job. P.S. as long as Cozgrove is defensive coordinator...NCs will not be coming to Lincoln.

Tom Rathman has played with the greatest players the west coast offense has ever seen, not to mention the man who created it. Bo Pelini had no head coaching exp when he came here....half of you would make him a head coach now. Bill will leave! he has tasted the superbowl and that is ultimately his greatest challange. I live in Arizona, born and raised in Omaha till 3 years ago. Callahan has loads of talent and a few pro teams are watching his development at Nebraska. Money talks my friends, Sam Keller will allow Callahan to open up his EXTREMELY complicated pro playbook and both will showcase thier talents to the pros this season. Callahan has no emotional ties to NU $$$$$$$$. Now on the Tom Rathman angle lets look @ his accomplishments. Won a superbowl in the west coast offense, his pro dreams are complete, with the best in the game. Must have learned a couple things about football since leaving NU. Has emotional ties to the state, which could be said for Tom Osborne. Tom Rathman will give the program a solid foundation. Just think of the people Rathman has been associated with, and the recruiting potiential he has, not to mention assistant coaching candidates. Callahan was not very well trusted after the Raider gig, he jumped @ NU to save his career and showcase his ability. Rathman is a Husker and would bleed for the BIG RED once again. Rathman knows the west coast offense, he knows what it takes to play at a championship level....the respect he would command from high school kids would be tremendous, imagine Joe Montana helping Tom recruit a QB. He loves NEBRASKA and is very intrested in becoming a member of the coaching staff. Husker fans, try not to let sipple and studder boy warp your thoughts with the big red page. there is more going on than what you read in the hearld.

I understand how much everyone in husker nation is celebrating the arrival of the west coast offense and the excitement of the forward pass. We as fans need the assurance of the Big Red to survive into the next ERA of college football. Dead is the option, recruiting would have continued to fall without the legend Tom Osborne holding the clip board. Callaham has done a remarkable job with Zac Taylor and winning the North this last year, Sam will give Callahan an opprotunity to showcase his play calling skills to the pro coaching scouts, which will put Bill on some pro prospect lists. This means when the opprotunity arrises and the conditions are right Callahan will bolt to the NFL.......his home. So, Im pushing the Tom Rathman future head coach @ Nebraska campaign. For Steve Pederson to hire Tom Rathman as a running backs coach/offensive coordinator until Bill leaves us. I assure you there is no better fit for Nebraska Football and a long future than Tom Rathman.
