I think some are reading too much in to a quote without context. The entire article is about the emotions surrounding the last meeting with Texas in the Big 12. Crick said "Our mindset stays the same," meaning they're not getting caught up in the emotion of the last meeting with Texas, because "[f]or me and a lot of the guys, it's the last time we're playing anyway."

 

Obviously, he doesn't literally mean this is the last game they're playing ever. He's saying this game is the last time any of the JUNIORS or SENIORS expected to play Texas anyway. It's an ever other year rivalry remember.

Texas wasn't on the schedule last year either. I'm sure Crick remembers having played them though.

I'm not going to try and translate what he said. I read it as a clear cut. I wasn't trying to twist my own views onto his comments when I titled this thread. I read it and said "oh, well, I guess Crick has made up his mind after all"..

Obviously others disagree and that's fine. I just want to make it clear my intentions were not to misrepresent his words.

Believe what you want to believe but I expect Crick to be in the NFL next year.

Do me a favor and don't stop by the 49ers message board. There is a few hundred die hard fans wallowing in the misery of an 0-5 start with their only glimmer of cheer coming from getting Andrew Luck next year in the draft.

I think there was a quote from Crick over the summer saying something similar . . . I'm taking it at face value. Believe what you want to believe but I expect Crick to be in the NFL next year.

Exactly. I guess I'm confused as to how others are dismissing it. Seems fairly cut and dry to me. If it was a quote from someone (say an actual senior like Pierre Allen) and mistankingly credited to Crick, then okay.

But otherwise, it was Crick saying this is his last season as a Husker. I'm not going to speculate on why he would say it, but he did.

I don't think I'm reading too much into it.. Sounds pretty clear that he's playing this season fully believing it's his last one anyways. Doesn't it?

If we play a clean game TX will not win. They have lost to teams worse than us and are vulneralble, this is a case of talent not resulting in victory. We play the game for a reason but this is the year that we should we. Last year does not matter but to be simple we are much better and they are much worse than last year.

 

 

Nebraska has had some nice wins but to me this is the "Contender or Pretender Game" I think we are the real deal.

I'm may be the chicken little type. But I've watched most every snap out of Texas this year and I'm not convinced they are not still a very good football team. Perhaps even top 10-15..

They just keep killing themselves. Penalties when they get a stop that keeps a drive going. Dropped passes by wide open receivers..

A few things cleaned up here or there and they could have won both the games they lost..

It wouldn't suprise me in the least to see a bye week "re-birth" of Texas on Saturday. I think we beat Texas regardless as we're the better team even if they're not killing themselves with stupid mistakes. But, imo, it would be as wrong to look at Texas's losses any differently than our losses to VT and Iowa st. last year. 1 game vs. a very good opponent where we should have won. And one clunker vs. a bad team we bumbled away.

HOld onto the ball. That's it for me. We do that we win. I can see Taylor taking some big shots and coughing it up. I really think we should use Taylor as a decoy to begin the game and let the backs take the hits and do the early pounding. Hopefully by the middle of the 2nd quarter we'll have gotten a turnover or flipped the field from their offense and can get up on points then just keep pounding. This is a game I want to see Rex handle early and often.

Considering the rate we are turning the ball over, this game scares me. I've seen nothing from Texas that worries me. We can grind them down and eventually put them away. But if we turn the ball over, we got problems.

Thanks to all the Husker fans that showed us so much hospitality over the weekend! It was truly a great experience! We'll never have a stadium like that, but I hope it really opened up the eyes of some of our big donors to get our new renovations done to our own facilities and keep propelling our program through D1! U of Mn, and Iowa State pale in comparison to the overall gameday experience.

I was glad to see so many Husker fans cheering the Jackrabbits as they walked off the field. They deserved it. They played a heck of a game.

Anyone who has played ball knows- the best position is the under dog position. We got SDSUs best last night and that only got them a 17-3 loss(with a nice paycheck). In my mind, we were not lucky it was SDSU, but unlucky that they were even on the schedule. Anyone who has been on a good team knows how hard it is to get up for a game that has no real implications/below average opponent. Don't get me wrong SDSU fans, your team has my respect.

 

I have to admit- I am a little surprised that the kids came out with no intensity at home and as my old ball coach used to say, "you guys were just going through the motions out there- Your playing with them!". It is especially surprising from this staff, that usually always has the kids focused. The announcers on TV were saying the coaching staff made the game plan especially complex this week to try and get the kids to focus a little harder. Perhaps this was our downfall. I think everyone understands that we had to try some different passing looks, but I think a lot of us thought we would be doing this after a 28-0 lead.

I hope you're right. I've watched the game twice (and rewound certain plays numerous times) and to me, it wasn't a case of a team just over looking someone, as a team that was confused at times and manhandled at others.

Not sure what overlooking has to do with a qb locking on and telegraphing every throw, or skipping balls, or an offensive linemen getting blown off the line.

I'm sure there is some of that, but I wouldn't discount this all as an overlook. Remember, the offensive line was horribble last year and Martinez has not yet proven he can be a good thrower. So to chalk it up as a fluke and not notice there are some real concerns STILL with the offense, is short sighted imo.

I think it's a little funny that none of us remembered Steven Sheffield.

What's probably funniest about that, and referencing McShay, is that Sheffield's game is clearly the aberration in this mix, yet I'm sure McShay would point to it as the "correct" example, while the others were aberrations were he to take part in this conversation.

 

I was just thinking about the Tech game the other day. Remember those crazy circus catches those WRs made? Three or four of them, the once-a-year-kind-of-catch catches that they made just in the first half alone. After Tech's first drive the DEF noticeably sagged, and it was a bad day from there.

 

 

My greatest regret in conference expansion is that we won't get a chance to rectify things with Tech before we move on.

Hey Knapplc, I didn't mention Sheffield because he's not on any future or current NFL radars that I've heard of. (could be wrong) In fact, he's not even the starter this year. And wasn't the suppossed to be the starter vs. us last year..

He had a much better game then most have had, but if I recall correctly, we still held them to the least amount of yards of any team last year. The score was so lopsided because of the turnovers and special teams play..

Definently had the most success of anyone against us last year. But like you say, I'd love another shot against them with an offense capable of eating some clock nad giving our defense a rest.

I'm not a big fan of Watson, but I think he's a decent OC. What amazes me is how people completely blame Watson for last year's offense even though both he and Bo have said repeatedly that Bo shut things down. Bo has even said he pulled the reins in a little too much. Why doesn't Bo, the HC who made the decision to hamstring the offense, take any of the blame? And why do Cotton and Watson not get more credit for what has happened so far this season? I think people's biases for and against various coaches is showing through here.

I agree he's decent, but I'm not sure I'm willing to settle for decent. If he can look like a mastermind when a guy like Martinez is playing and look like a pop warner coach when Lee is playing, there's going to be far too many extreme highs and lows in his tenure here.

I understand there will always be some fluctuation based on talent, but not to the extremes of the last few years.

I think you can still have issues with what happened last year and praise him for this year.. (if this offense turns out to be as good as it looks this year)

My issue was injuries and talent completely shut this offense down last year. It came to an unacceptable level of ineptness..

A great OC would have figured out how to generate some offense last year. I can accept there will be years where the offense will be up or down. But, we should never be falling down to the 100's nationally in offensive production.. If we do, he's to blame. Just as he's to be credited when we're good.

I should also mention in those 6 games. Those qb's have thrown the same amount of touchdown passes *2* to their team as they have thrown touchdown passes to our defense!

We ran three INTs back in the last two games, so I think that's just a little bit off. Two vs. Enderle and one vs. Locker.

Was at a dinner tonight, will spare you the details but T.O. was the speaker.. He touched on so many different issues from Tony Blair, Al Qaeda (sp?)to Lou Holtz to Scott Frost, but the one thing that stuck out to me was..

 

 

If you didn't know better, you'd think he was anti capitalaism- a communist-socialist- slash whatever you people call Democrats these days.

 

 

The vast majority of his speech was about how he grew up believing a mans worth was valued in his character, not in his clothes, or the size of his house, or the car he drove. But how a man's life was valued in the way he treated the poor. The steps they took to share their wealth with the less fortunate etc.etc..

 

 

It was a great speech from a legend. I was honored to hear it. But it got me thinking. If anyone, lets say, the President, made this exact same speech, it would be all over the internet as proof he was trying to destroy America.. Just saying.

Exactly. Much of our politics is dominated by strong personal feelings about the PERSON . . . and not so much about their beliefs. I know people from English classes years ago who would object to George W. Bush saying that we shouldn't let babies starve to death. My own father admits that he is angered just by the sight of Barack Obama. Neither reaction is rational. Unfortunately, rational thought looks more rare each and every day.

It just hit me as I was listening to him talk that if I had a cell phone camera and recorded it, then picked out the soundbytes I wanted to and posted them on here under the heading "Obama supporter talks about what's wrong with America" there would be a ton of "pinko liberal, socialist, marxist," type comments..

 

 

Of course now that we know it was Osborne talking, it's just a great man being lead by a higher calling trying to teach accountability to our fellow man..

I think the big difference is Obama has made statements that show he favors wealth redistribution and social programs, TO on the other hand, voted, and speaks more towards hard work, and helping your fellow man through charities, Church and volunteerism. These statements are not made in a vacuum, so their political and social views would rightly be applied. I think both Obama and TO are right about greed affecting our country, how we solve the issue is where they differ. Obama favors taking the money from people he thinks have to "much" (how much is to much by the way) and giving it to the poor, while TO seems to think you should willing give it to help others, through local services etc.

 

Your post isn't entirely accurate. You make it seem like Obama is exceptional in his politics . . . and I hate to break it to people but he is largely left-center. He is not a radical by any means.

 

Any politician who has voted yes on a federal budget in the last 50+ years is in favor of "wealth-redistribution." That's basically what a progressive tax structure is. Take more from those who have more . . . and the poor tend to benefit disproportionately from social programs.

 

It just annoys the hell out of me when people talk like this is a new or radical idea. It's not. Claiming otherwise is a damned lie.

 

I dont get where you are coming from. I pointed out that Obama and TO have different political and philosophical ideals. Obama has made many statements to show that, so has TO. I never said Obamas ideas where new, they are not. The op was stating if you were to credit TO's quotes to Obama people whould say he is a socialist or something, and I agree. Just as everything W said proved he was nothing more than a warmongering, ultra-conservative, illiterate jack hole, Obama has now been pigeon holed as a quasi Socialist.

Fair enough. Really, I was more trying to point out how the modern "sound byte" and as you say "pigeon holed" media can make anything look anti or pro American.

I'm not Obama groupie and didn't like Bush either. I just can't stand the way either side can take someones words and manipulate them totally out of context to favor their hate for the speaker...

I don't pretend to be an economics proffesor and really don't have any clue on the best way to tax-redistribute or generally help this economy. I've heard some really smart guys with some really serious degrees argue on both sides. Who am I to say who's right?

I do know though that neither "side" really has fixing the situation as a priority and are more than happy to watch us all burn if it means they can get elected by promosing to pee on us and put the fire out.

I'm looking at guys who are either already in the NFL or that I've read or have heard are on future NFL prospect lists.. I might be missing some so feel free to correct or add to it if I am...

I'm guessing they went in letting all 3 qb's know the competition was wide open but Martinez probably left little doubt early on who the QB would be.

 

 

I doubt he'd give away anything, but it would be nice to see someone ask Bo, now that it's all said and done and his choice was correct, if it really was a "battle to the end" like he said it was.

 

That's a good question I would love to know too. Not that it's important at all as it isn't but I'm curious. Just comments here and there that Tmart was lighting up Bo/Carl's defense in practice would make sense if true.

 

Like everyone else, I'd like to know why Lee is getting almost zero snaps despite our three blowouts so far? If he's in the doghouse, why? There's very little question that Tmart brings boatloads more to the offense but it would seem that his experience would be a great asset as a backup. Or is it because Green is just too much more talented for Lee to get close to and the coaches think they'll just ride with the top two qbs? Maybe getting as much experience as possible for Tmart/Green is the priority?

 

Well, we'll probably never know for sure. The results can't be argued with though.

My guess is your last question is the entire reason. Bo is looking ahead to the future and ZLee is a goner at the end of the season. Keep giving the new guys reps...

I'm not sure we should be looking too far to the future. We have, by most accounts, a National championship shot this year.

My guess is they honestly believe we're a better team with Green at QB than with Lee.. I doubt they'd risk blowing a game this season for the sake of getting him experience.

As good as we've looked, I can't help but wonder how we'll run against the Texas D, which looks every bit as fierce as ours, and which I believe is considered the best run D in the nation right now. I hope Martinez doesn't get beat to sh#t from all the hard hits.

Very true. I re-watched the game last night and noticed so many bad arm tackles we ran right through. And slow reacting linebackers we ran right by..

As terryfing as our running game may be, Taylor is going to have to beet people through the air at some point. Texas will have the talent at CB to play man to man and commit everyone else to stopping the run.

Few, if any, have three 100-yard rushers that are all threats to do it again on any week. Nebraska's defense looks on track to be as good as it was a year ago, and it will only get better as the season progresses. If the running game does the same, the Huskers will be a team in the national title picture. So far, the Huskers are the only team in the conference with three blowout wins, and their three includes a road blowout against a Pac-10 team. Taylor Martinez, Roy Helu Jr. and Rex Burkhead give this Huskers offense an edge that was missing in 2009 behind an offensive line that's turned in outstanding performances for the season's first three weeks.

Expecting a big 12 blogger to pick us, support us, applaud u much, whatever is probably unrealistic. In a few months, we're all gone and the rest of the big 12 fans will still be there. He's going to do his best to keep them happy and not care much of what we think.

Now the fun will be watching them try desperatley to downplay us to save face for their conference. I don't know about you, but I plan to really enjoy being "disrespected" by the Big 12 talking heads. It will make winning this thing and walking away that much sweeter.

They just took the "sure thing" number 1 qb in the country and exposed him perhaps worse than any number 1 prospect has ever been exposed in a single game as a fraud..

I drink as much of the kool-aid as the next Husker, and have visions of the Fiesta Bowl like a lot of people on the board.. Why are we (I'm REALLY nervous) sweating out a game against an unranked opponent as much as we are this week?

 

I know Locker is good, they have good recievers, our unknowns on defense and the inexperiance of Martinez are all valid reasons to give it a second look. That doesn't change the fact that our Top 10 Huskers are playing an unranked team. Any thoughts?

For me, it's simple. Freshman qb playing his first road game in a hostile enviroment. How can you not be nervous about that?
