  1. What happened to these guys? Did they stay retired from football. These two were great O-line coaches. I was reading a 1994 clinic speech last night by Coach Young. It was interesting. Coach Dan gave some interesting numbers.

    For the option gurus...

In 1993-94 season, Nebraska ran the power, traps, leads and sweeps, 442 times, while running the option 141 times. He said contrary to popular belief the option is only 20% of Nebraska's offense.

He also said that almost every great athlete that TO brought in was put on defense. He said the offensive line usually got the leftovers. He was exaggerating some, but there was a lot of truth to it. Cally is doing the opposite and it shows.

I just thought these tidbits were interesting and was wondering if anyone knew what these coaches were doing now.

  2. Jeff Tedford, NFL coaches, and especially Terry Bowden, are not answers. If Neberaska goes after another left coast, panty waist, pass happy, no defense, guru, I'll puke. I'm sick of no defense in college football. Nebraska needs a defensive minded coach. It could be an offensive guy with a defensive mentality like Paul Johnson. (before you say the wishbone won't work, he wouldn't run it at Nebraska, and he was an OC with Hawaii for a time) or even Jim Grobe. I think Bo Pelini might be a good choice, however, has he had any head coaching experience.

  3. Callahan is in a no-win situation here; his entire staff is under fire, and all they can do is circle the wagons. His players have sounded as if they stand in defense of the coaching staff, by and large, and this makes the entire team feel under seige.

Well, that is the only defense they have played.

  4. Nice reporting, I Bleed Red. Congrats Nebraska. Looks like you've moving in the right direction. Don't forget about power football. If Nebraska starts looking at Tedford at CAL, I'll be on here screaming NO NO NO NO NO. DEFENSE wins championships. It is time for Nebraska to go back to the old ways. The Tide is rising !!!! Roll Tide and Go Big Red !!!

  5. The option play isn't dead. It's used quite frequently bymany teams at all levels outside the pros, but usually at most a couple times a game. The bulk of the offense is generally something else.

Offenses that relly heavily on this play continue to be common in high school and some divisions of cfb. But it's become nearly extinct at the 1-A (bowl subdivision?) level.

The biggest knocks i've heard on these so called "option" offenses is that they are hard to recruit to, they are relatively easy for a speedy defense to counter (which speed has become a major priority to teams around the country) and that your own defense doesn't get much preparation for the opponent as they are facing an option attack all week during practice.

Like I said before. Florida's base play is the zone read option. They won an NCAA championship in D1. Illinois didn't run the option a "couple times" Saturday. They ran it (including the triple option from shotgun) throughout most of the game. The option is not only alive and well, it is thriving. SPEED DOES NOT COUNTER THE OPTION !!! IT IS DESIGNED TO NEUTRALIZE SPEED!!!! Facing an option attack forces your defense to play assignment football and tackle well. It helps your defense. Besides, teams don't practice against their own offense all week, they practice against what the team they play will run.

  6. The power running game has been dead ever since Columbus stepped off that ship in 1492, but somehow Nebraska managed to win 5 national championships and contend for several others using this archaic formula.

One reason for this is because they were using zone blocking schemes before everyone else was. That was a very good post by the way.

  7. The option is a dead offense. It doesn't work anymore. Get over it.

Dumbest post I have ever seen on this forum!! If you think the option is dead, you obviously know very little about football. Also, Nebraska's offense of old was not a true option offense. They ran the option, sure, but it was power football at its best. Read the "Assembly Line" ! As for offenses being based on the option? Well, the zone read is an option play. The zone read is the base play for Florida, West Virginia, Illinois, and others spread running teams. So you could say their offenses are based on the option. The option is far from dead. You probably won't see teams running the bone, except for the service academies, who do well with what they have by the way. However, the option is still the single best play in football. Callahan's offense is not that bad, although it looked it Saturday night. The problem with him is that he is a west coast guy and that equals no defense. As long as he is in charge the defense will be weak no matter who the DC is because he will put the best players on offense because that is his side of the ball.

Nebraska's old power running game was one of the reason's the Black Shirts were so good. You go up against smashmouth football with option in practice every day, especially in the Spring, you are going to be good on defense. It is ridiculous to think the option is dead. Speed does not kill the option. The option is designed to neutralize speed, so saying defenses are too fast for the option is also ridiculous. Like someone posted earlier, all offenses have their good points and can be effective but their are consequences. For example see Texas Tech's defense. Before posting something like "the option is dead", please research, watch a few games, read some clinic books, and learn football.

  8. Agreed. And anyone with a pulse knows that Cally is an offensive-minded coach--naturally, the offense is flourishing under his guidance. Add to that the fact that we've actually got the special teams being...well...'special' again (unlike during the end of the Solich regime), and anyone asking for a housecleaning really hasn't got a clue.

See head. See sand. See you sticking head in the sand.

  9. When he talks about playing defense and running the ball, I don't think the Bama fan means the option, just being a physical run-first team who can still throw if they need to. The Huskers at this point are a run-first-then-realize-we-cant-so-let's-throw-it-60-times team.

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant. I don't think the option is dead though. The spread option is alive and well. I see Nebraska running somehting like West Virginia's power spread with a little more I formation built in. I never saw Nebraska as an option team anyway, I saw them as a power football team.

  10. Its me again, the Bama fan. I just wanted to comment on how similar this forum is compared to Bama forums during the Mike Shula era. You have the ones that want the head coach gone, the ones that want assistant coaches gone, and then you have the apologists that have accepted mediocrity. Its not going to get any better until Nebraska finds a new head coach that embraces the Nebraska tradition of running the ball and playing great defense.

    :boxosoap

  11. Google "record against top 10 teams"

You only get negative results. You know why? Because thats a bullsh#t way to measure the worth of a team. Top ten teams rarely play each other and when they do, one of them loses. Does that mean they suck? No! Otherwise, they wouldnt have been in the top ten to begin with.

    great post !!!

  12. i think cally realizes Coz is a liability to his own longevity here, but at this point he doesn't quite know what to do about it. i think he is hoping the NFL comes calling for Coz again in the off season and he can gracefully slip out of town.

that would be the most painless scenario for all involved, then the search for a new D coordinator, hopefully with an open check book from Pud.

Every thing that has been said in this thread is exactly the same things that were said for 4 years on Bama's forums about Mike Shula.

  13.

LSU's schedule tougher than USC's? The past couple years, yes. This year, I don't think so. And quite frankly, this looks like a down year for the rest of the SEC West, Auburn looks terrible, Arkansas has dropped off from last year, and although Alabama seems to be on the rise, Saban's only got so much to work with. I think the East is better than the West across the board, but still not as good as everyone anticipated. I think Florida still has it easier than USC. Plus, USC already gets to boast dismantling a #14 on the road in their second game of the year.

    LSU didn't dismantle Virginia Tech?

  14. Agreed with all post so-far except the "our coaches can't recruit talent"........

Yes, I think that Coz needs to re-evaluate who he has on the field.....I mentioned something close to that in the original post, but not maybe that "in-depth"..... Thenarse, Dillard, Culbert (back on D).... should see the field more !!!!!!!

Remember, I didn't say that the Coach's didn't need to shoulder some of the responsibility, but am just pointing out the talent gap also played into this type of game.....

As far as recruiting talent..... I said pre-season that this year should NOT BE A DEFINING YEAR FOR BC.... he has talent, but "young" talent and we do not have QUALITY-TALENTED DEPTH....

I am sorry to spoil it for a few of you guys, but 2-3 pretty good recruiting classes does not make you an immediate "power"..... it takes time....... some guys pan-out, some don't, some leave, injuries...... relax, give recruiting time to build quality depth !!!!!!!

I am glad someone mentioned the OWH article this morning...look at the missed tackles.....over-powered.....missed assignments..... all that can't be pinned DIRECTLY ON COZ..... but, yes, the coach needs to address these issues and take the responsibility to fix it.....

missed tackles are a direct reflection of coaching. Fundamentals have to be practiced every day. Getting the kid into position is only part of it. You have to teach him to break down and bring his hands.

  15. LOL!!!!

Nobody likes hearing the truth from people outside of the state. It is plainly obvious to non NU kool aid lovers what the truth about Clownahan and our team but you will never get them to see without their rosey RED glasses.

    FAN try this : pleasefirecallahan.com

It will be updated later today also. But it will be with a Cosgrove emphasis.

    try this...

    62xc5sj.jpg

use it and go away. Seriously, why do you even bother? You are a 'convenience fan'. You are only a fan when everything is going good. One loss, and you want to fire everyone. You don't know what you want, except change. You offer no explanation, no suggestions, no reasoning, no nothing. Go run your hate website and disappear. Since I'm used to disappointment, I'm sure you won't and will continue to lurk and flame.

For "I Bleed Red". Trust me Jeff Teford is not the answer. You will be in the same boat as you are now. No defense.

  16. If we were an option team...the score would have been 49-0 Saturday. Defenses are bigger and faster than they used to be. The option is dead. WVU mixes it in occasionally, but they use Slaton and White in a whole bunch of creative formations that make the option effective the few times they go to it. If you're going to beat a top 10 defense, you need balance.

The whole "defenses are bigger, stronger, faster" thing is dumb. So are the offenses!!!

Balance is a myth. Was USC balanced Saturday night?

LMAO !! The option is dead? Tell that to the TCU horned frogs. The zone read is an option play. The National Champions last year uses the zone read as their base play. Speed does not kill the option. The whole entire point of the option is to neutralize speed. Defenses can not play "flying to the football". They have to play assignment football. NFL teams don't run the option because they can't afford getting their QB's hit every other play. QBs cost money in the NFL. One last thing. Back in the day Nebraska ran the inside and outside zone run plays. They ran option only about 30% of the time according to Milt Tenopir. (sp?) The option is dead? Wow !!! Football 101 folks, football 101 !

  17. Because 4 yrs later we're not ONE BIT BETTER than when Solich was here.

So your saying that option left and option right would of tourched the Trojan defense? I don't think so.

i saw a USC fan walking back to the car after the game and he was wearing a T-shirt that said on the back:

    SEE RED RUN

    SEE RED RUN

    SEE RED RUN

    SEE RED PUNT

    NU VS USC 2007

that is exactly what would have happened

as opposed too what actually happened???

    SEE USC RUN

    SEE USC RUN

SEE USC RUN A TOUCHDOWN AGAIN AND AGAIN.

  18. I will say this...I hope your Alabama team does well. Good luck in the season. Beyond that, your opinions suck.

    Go Alabama!

    That's kinda what I thought.

What about my opinons sucked? Please elaborate. I recieved the same reaction from many, many Bama fans when I said the same type things about Mike Shula. It took everyone else four years to realize what I already knew.

    Go Huskers !!!
