Rivals has an update about Mitchell's visit, and Charles put his chances of ending up at NU at 70% - we was blown away by the visit. Evidently he camped at LSU and was already very familiar with Bo. He mom wants him to attend an in-state school, and he's still considering Southern Miss, Miss St. and Ole Miss, but sounds like he was really impressed with NU.

not good.... you have to win over the mom. maybe the coaches can talk to her

You don't always have to win over the mom, allthough it certainly helps. There comes a time in a young mans lives where he completly starts to make decisions on his own, regardless of how big of a decision it is. I know my parent's had 0 say in where I went.

True but being underage a parent does have to sign the Scholarship with the student athlete. If my memory is correct we lost a highly rated QB prospect (name) several years ago to USC because his Mother would not sign and allow him to come to NU.

This was before Pete Carrol and when Pete came in and moved him to DB he transferred to UNLV to play for Coach Robinson.

  2. I just don't think it would be wise for Lucky to go pro this year. The draft will be stocked with better RBs than he is...now if he stays one more year, he will be in the top. I am not too worried about the QB situation either. We have some young guys that do have time left to play. I think bringing in one or two more top notch WRs will be very beneficial, but with Paul and Holt, etc... it should be just fine. I agree with Hanc about the O-line. The young guys are going to be pushing the vets for spots and I hope the vets step up to the plate. It would be nice to see Murtha finally live up to the hype he had in high school!

I hope Lucky doesn't leave for the Pro's, but considering he's basically an A-Typical NFL style running back after Callahan's tenure, I'm wondering if pro teams will show him a little more interest.

mm depends on which team takes him IMO. Can you imagine him with the Patriots? Doesn't need to carry 30 times to make an impact there.

I don't know his background if he needs the money but he did have a stellar year IMO with this NU team. NFL teams will look at his pass recieving as well.

IMO he goes PRO. Becomes a late 2nd or 3rd round pick to a team that needs a great contributor not a star.

  3. I know its part of a needed coaching change. but it still sucks. moler is gone and it seems like hoch, givens, compton and williams wont be around to much longer....

I think everyone is really looking at the worst case scenario for our recruiting. I think things will turn out much better than most people think. I have read updates from rivals on all those guys and i think we have a great shot at all of them.

Hoch i think wants to play for NU and and not just at NU, he had a great relationship with coach Wagner and i dont think he liked the fact that he wasnt retained. However i think once Hoch gets a chance to build a relationship with Barney Cotton him will firm up his committment.

Givens might be the most likely out of all these guys to go somewhere else. He is down to NU, Texas, and CU. He will be visting CU this week and then decide before the 1st of the year. He had a visit to Texas a few weeks ago and he said he loved it, so Texas is probably the biggest competition for Givens, but i am a little encouraged because of his relationship with Williams and Compton.

Compton is the recruit i am probably least worried about. It seemed like ever since the whole coaching thing happened Compton has been just trying to convince himself that NU was not the best fit for him, and i think he could not fully come to that conclusion, and that is why he is still a NU commit. Blaine Gabbert has been trying to pull Compton over to the Tigers ever since Gabbert committed there, but to no avail so far. Compton had a great visit with Pelini and one of those new coaches from LSU about a week ago and it seemed like Compton was very impressed with with Pelini. I think the fact that we hired a defensive minded coach gives us a huge advantage with Compton. Compton is visiting Missouri this weekend and then has a visit set for Nebraska Jan. 11, He shouldnt be blown away by Mizzou because i am sure he has seen that place before considering it is in-state, so when he comes to NU i think he will decide that is the place for him and solidify his commitment.

William was visited by 3 NU coaches(Bo and Carl Pelini, and Marvin Sanders) a few days ago and i think it really set well with him. He even admitted that it would be very hard for a school to top Nebraska, so i think he will end up at NU after it is all said and done. He is visiting CU this weekend with Givens and said he also wants to set up an unofficial visit to NU the same weekend Compton is visiting. So look for Williams to become solid soon after the 1st of the year, if not sooner.

-Givens even talked about the possibility of him and Williams being a packaged deal, and Williams is no longer looking at Texas, so that leaves it with CU and NU if these two want to play together. I think we will see Compton become solid after his Missouri visit, then Compton will help pull Williams back on board, and the pull of Williams and Compton i think will help a lot with getting Givens to NU over Texas.

So i think there is a great chance to see all four of these gives sign with NU in Feb. and the worst case scenario i think we sign only 2 of the 4, so things are looking pretty good i think.

Good post and good information. I'm hoping we retain all of them. Givens would be the icing on the cake for our offensive line and we all know we need Linebackers.

Since Givens teammate (Nolan Brewster)is a Texas recruit I'm most worried he will go there. Would be spectacular if their relationship would cause Nolan to renenge on his Texas commitment and decide to come to NU and then Pelini could go after Jon Major!

    Won't happen but hey I can dream can't I?

  4. FWI

It's nice to sew up all the instate recruits that have potential, but I agree with some who wouldn't be

that upset if TR went elsewhere. Going back to last year, I've never been sold on him as far as speed,

quickness, overall physique and aggressive football attitude. However, it's possible he could improve

in these areas and prove us wrong--but in the meantime I wouldn't consider him a big loss at all.

NUs recruiting efforts are better spent elsewhere as he projects to be a player that more precisely fits the mold of a Big 10/ND lineman. We need to recruit speed and explosiveness off the ball.

I don't think our old Coaches or new Coaches plus Notre Dames or Michigans would of spent the time and effort recruiting him if he wasn't a player.

A line of Steinkhuler, Hoch, Robinson and Givens would be a great bonus for NU in the next few years. Micx them with Burkes, Thompson or Henry and you may have a line any Runnigback would love to run behind.

  5. Does anyone else feel the days of NU looking for quick fix Junior College players coming to an end or at least will be greatly decreased?

I know the Pellini will need to win immediatedly but I'm also seeing with the rebuilding of the walkon program there will be more scholarships spent on 4th year Juniors and 5th year Seniors.

    Any thoughts on this?

  6. Latest linky:

    http://recruiting.scout.com/2/708109.html

He appears gone. Perhaps Bo will give him a look but I have heard nothing about trying to get him back on board. I say we upgrade to Thompson! :)

I am sure TO loves this guy's attitude. :sarcasm

not a big loss in my book. We need defensive lineman who WANT to play for Nebraska. Any defensive lineman who saw us this year should be licking their lips for a chance to come play at NU. At least one who thinks much of himself can see the opportunity, such as Kuli!

  7. This is gonna sound silly, but what about Marcus Allen, or as much as I hate to admit it, Billy Sims...

Billy Sims isn't silly at all. He was a damned good player. I was pretty young when he was playing at Oklahoma and I still remember getting this sick feeling in my stomach whenever they handed him the ball.

I agree with your Billy Sims statement. He was awesome. More than awesome. He deserves his ranking for sure. Others I can think of..Steve Young over Vince Young anyday. Single handedly led BYU over Michigan and his Pro career proves this right.

Dave Rimington and Rich Glover might also be there. Gino Marchetti from the replays I've seen of him was awesome, the 420 man himself wasn't so bad ( Ricky Williams), Archie Grigffin should be higher.

Someone said earlier that Vince Young could/should be higher on the list than Tommie Frazier because he could pass, but they're apparently forgetting the option-pass to the tight end. I can't tell you how many times Tommie ran that option, stopped behind the impenetrable wall of his O-Line, then calmly threw a 20-yard pass to a tight end alone in the secondary. The TE was alone because they HAD TO bring the safety up to help stop the option, and it was an absolutely beautiful play.

Nobody is ever going to mistake Tommie Frazier for a passing QB, but he most certainly could pass when he needed to, and did so with devestating results.

  8. How about the "catch" at Missouri in '97 that pretty much sealed the deal for a national championship that year.

    :yeah

Without that one single play, we do not have a NC in 97.

I agree. It kept us alive for the Championship. I also agree with the choices for each decade EXCEPT what about Defense and Special Teams?

The team sacks against Miami for the National Championship in 94? Including the sack for the safety. other grea plays the non called fumble by OU when a Nebraska decleated the return man (78 or 79) the grant Wistrom caused fumble and recovery of a OU fumble, where grant crawled like 10 yards for the recovery.

Another offensive play I'll never forget was "Sapp gettig Suckered" for the National Championship against Miami.

  9. 1. Was DC at a number of schools from 1991 to 2005, including coaching Brian Urlacher at New Mexico.

2.. Took over a reeling BYU program in 2005 as Head Coach, that had 3 straight losing seasons under Gary Crowton. Led team to bowl in first year, and was 10-2 last year. Currently 9-2, and will likely be 10-2 after this weekends make-up game with San Diego State. 17-2 in last 18 games.

    3. BYU is 9th in total defense this year, with an all-white LB corp and secondary.

    4. BYU last year crushed Oregon in its bowl, 38-8.

    5. When Mendenhall took over, he emphasized TRADITION and HONOR. He changed the uniform and helmets back to the traditional design. He brought Lavell Edwards back into the program. Despite being a man of few words, hee whipped the alumni into complete frenzy.

    6. Produced a quarterback drafted in the early 2nd round of the NFL.

    7. He is YOUNG and HUNGRY and ENERGETIC. During the off-season, in a race up a mountain, he beat the entire team.

    8. Mendenhall has maintained his role as DC, despite being the HC. He is HANDS-ON, not an in-the-background administrator.

    9. The man is a flat-out LEADER. He doesn't scream and yell. He leads.

I don't know if Mendenhall would ever be willing to leave BYU. He recently had his contract extended and his salary increased, from ~400k/yr to 900k/yr (pittance, but maybe enough to keep him happy). But in my mind, I can't think of another coach that would be able to LEVERAGE Husker tradition and spirit like Mendenhall. Please consider him at least as one of our darkhouse up-and-comer non-big-name candidates.

Oh yeah, one other minor point in his favor. Named his sons Cutter, Breaker and Raeder.

Good Coach. Left UNM to become Coach at BYU. That was in his contract at UNM...he could only leave for a BYU Coaching contract. You can also say he developed a young small town football player no one had heard of outside of New Mexico into one of the best Linebackers in football..Brian Urlacher.

Does well with the talent he gets and knows how to develope talent offensively and defensely.

BYU is his dream job and I don't think he'd leave for another school but Money does talk. I would expect BYU to match any reasonable offer and I don't think he commands mega millions.

Not the Name Nebraska is looking for, IMO

  10. I would like to see Frost coaching linebackers at NU.

I can remember two hits by Frost - one as a Husker, one when he was with the Jets - that just absolutely lit up the guy he was blocking.

If he could instill that into our Linebackers again, I'm all for it. :thumbs

When he played for the Jets, wasn't he on defense as a safety? Why exactly was he blocking anyone when he played for the Jets? Was it on special teams or something?

It's....It's....am....am......because he played here once! GOSH! ;)

    Like your pic

  11. That's an awful long post to provide nothing other than "he played here" as a reason to name him the head coach. I really wish some of you would put the blinders away.

It was a good post. It explained in detail why Turner would be a good Coach, ESPECIALLY at Nebraska. I put my blinders away many years ago. I also live in a realistic world where my ENTIRE life does not revolve around the Cornhuskers. In saying that I love the Cornhuskers..win or lose but I also enjoy what I have.

Turner Gill is the type of football Coach I want to lead my team. Pellini would also be a nice fit. I'd love to have them both back together which I don't really see happening.

I also respect Dr. Tom enough to do whats right. I'll let him choose and respect his decision. If you call that blinders than IMO it show sthat your a new comer to Nebraska football and don't really understand what it means to be a Husker.

Ask any former Husker athlete of the last 25 years ..Defensive or Offensive what Turner Gill means to them and this program. I'll bet you won't get many complaints about him becoming Head Coach.

Besides some of us need blinders so we don't read all the BS spread from people who have their Eyes Wide Shut! Mouth wide open..and Brain in Neutral.

IMO Nebraska is LUCKY to have at least 2 fine men wanting, willing and able to lead this team.

  12. I'm having a hard time understanding what he has done that is so great that would automatically give him the Husker job? I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but he better have really good assistants to get it done here. Also, most kids are going to say.......................who???

It all comes down in how you feel about Tom and his judgement. Tom spent more hours with Turner than his own wife during his Coaching career at Nebraska much less as a player.

If he chooses Turner it won't be because he shined during the interview process alone. It will be because he is the same person Tom has known for a long time.

IMO Turner is someone who knows Nebraska. Knows how to win. Knows how to recruit. Knows how to run a clean program.

AND has the experience around National Champion Teams to understand what it takes to become a Champion. He has been there through all of Toms Nebraska Champion games. As a player and a Coach...that experience should count for something.

If Pellini is chosen I feel it would be a good choice as well. BUT how LONG would he stay? If he doesn't have success immediately he is gone. If he does has success immediatedly I think a Pro team will take him. He is a very good Coach, even excellent, but do we want someone for just a few years.

People seem to want a NAME Coach. Perhaps we can get John Madden, Barry Switzer, Don Shula, Lou Holtz, LLoyd Carr, or heck why not Jimmy Johnson (hey he is alive)

I want someone who will MAKE his name at Nebraska! Will stay here because he wants to, dreams to, desires to. I want someone who EARNS his respect AT Nebraska not somewhere else.

Oh heck lets just get Tom back with Turner as his Assistant and some other people none else has ever heard of.

  13. Would someone tell me why Husker fans are the greatest fans in the country? I think after the last few years we seriously need to give up that notion. Maybe once people can quit cussing out the players and coaches and stop whining on the internet like a bunch of teenage myspace junkies, we can think of ourselves that way again. Until then, that notion is really more of a sham than people claim Bill Callahan to be.

Sorry to butt in to your anonymous internet CU hate-fest, but I've met plenty of CU fans that are just great. They come to Lincoln, spend their hard earned cash, sit next to us at the bars and chat us up like great college football fans. But I digress. You can go back to your screwed up priorities now.

    Ditto

  14. Oklahoma...undoubtedly Nebraska's biggest all time rival. We fought hard against those guys for sooo many years, and I respect them allot. now we have this lame rivalry with CU...which really isn't a rivalry. One big reason for me is that I have no respect for Colorado. They have no tradition, class, or style in their game. Their fans are trashy, their players are trashier, and their coaches are trashiest. They talk smack they can't back up, and recruit with strippers...

All in all, I just don't respect them like I respect OU. I just really hate the team so much...not in a healthy way at all. Anyone else feel that way or is it just me?

Thats sad. I've never been a fan of CU for sure but your hate seems to be something you should seek help for....you know Dr. Tom might be able to help you....seriously please seek help before you do something really crazy in the name of NU.

  15. I don't think it will happen BUT IF a new Coach is hired. What would your reaction be if Frank Solich was asked to return?

I haven't heard any specualation on him BUT he was Toms guy before. So lets not argue about the IF llets just say he will be named as the new Coach. What would be your reaction?

  16. ............wouldnt the HC take some time to choose his own assistants AFTER he is hired? ...........

The story I've been given is that certain people were agreed to by Bo and Tom. Many of the staff will be Bo's sole choice. Tom thinks Bo reminds him of Devaney in his early years and they seem to get along well. Anyway, they are working together to bring in a staff for Bo. Most of it will be decided after Bo is announced HC.

This isn't just another made up post. The information comes via an old friend with statewide influence and University connections. It could be a bunch of crap but I think my friend is well connected enough that it probably is factual. When the AD was cut lose he got word to me about it well before the press conference announcement.

Sorry, you'll have to wait at least 8 more days before you know for sure.

P.S. Don't judge me by my picture. I'm smarter than I look! :D

Will you still post if this doesn't come true? Not that I don't believe you since I'm sure your smart and all or is it because you have a Master Degree in BS? Either way Tom has a Doctorate so he trumps you IMO

  17. I don't think ESPN has rigged this but I do think that the number of votes now is probably so high (and with only two coaches in the running) that even 100 votes won't affect the percentages. We just need to keep voting, en masse, and T.O. will come out the winner. No doubt some Alabama-computer-guru has developed a hacker-like program to continually vote for Bryant over and over... and over... and over. We need the same! But we will do it the right way, with actual votes by people!

Bryant is narrowing the lead. 41-46% KEEP the votes a coming.

  18. holy sh#t, i am getting nervous. i just don't think T.O. can make BC change and that is the only way the bastard will change, under duress.

i think he is way too proud to knuckle under to T.O. , way too proud.

25th can't come quick enough, but i will be pissed if he gives BC another year! chuckleshuffle:box

I don't think TO can give BC another chane without his own credibility coming into questioning. Listen all the possible candidates mentioned are way better than BC because they are all into college football. They understand what to do unlike BC. Since BC hasn't fired any of his staff yet, he won't no matter what TO says and therefore BC can't stay.

IMO either way this shakes out won't cause Tom to worry about his credibility. He will do what he thinks is best for the school, the program, the Coaches and the players before he ever gives a wit about himself except for keeping his word that the decision will be made after the season.

  19. :lol::lol:

knapplc, enough. If you can't post without the personal attacks, either find a new board or don't post at all.

If you think calling someone "clueless" is a personal attack worthy of a warning, you should see what's been posted about me - by Freemason, among others - in my brief time here. I didn't see anyone coming to my defense then.

I shall not call anyone clueless again, however. Point taken.

I agree with you FreeMason was out of line as well. Course he did have more tackles than you. :) Hey life should be fun. Be Happy all. Some Husker fans didn't wake up today. Hope all of you will for sometime.

Yes, we both need to tone it down. I agree with that. I'm not looking for AR to give me a free pass, I'm just thinking the playing field should be level.

But I did make my little "pledge," and I plan on sticking to it. No more Mr. Mean Guy from me. Like you said, NM - this should be fun. We are all Husker Fans, so no more bickering for me.

Friend we are all in this together. Didn't seem to me that you had to take Juniors crap anymore than mine. We all get a little carried away sometimes but I think calmer heads are needed to make rational decisions don't you Junior? :)

After all your Dad probably would of beaten my Dad up...but being the good Minister my Dad was you'd be the one paying in hell. J/K

My dad's not a minister - but he has been an Elder in our church for 20+ years. Our dads would probably meet and suddenly break into a Bible study. :)

Yeah I'm sure they would and then after carefully relating all the "Facts" in the Bible the real fight would begin. :rollin

  20. If Callahan is replaced I would be more than overjoyed to see Mr. Gill back. Ther eis no other Husker I admire more than him. Except it being Tom and Bob (uhh not the radio hosts)

He would bring with him experience, ability and desire. He is as fine a person for young men to emulate. Clear headed and believes in a higher authority in making his path in life.

Tom had no Head Coaching experience when he started. I think Turner has more than enough experience and I also feel he would surround himself with the capable Coaching staff around him to make it work.

Anyone who has ever seen Turner around young recruits knows he will talk more than the NFL, and more than winning. I know that hurts some. Since to some winning is everything, nothing else matters no matter what it takes.

Turner getting the Husker Head Coaching would be his pinnacle of success. I can see him here forever. Not sure I can say that about anyone else.
