  1. would we even be having these discussions right now?

Was that the proverbial last straw?

Oh yes, absolutely. That's the ONLY reason Nebraska is joining the Big 10. Because one second got put on the clock in the Conference Championship Game. That is 100% the only reason whatsoever this is happening.

You're like the Amazing Kreskin. You just perceive things so clearly, it's like magic.

    Bravo! :clap

Kreskin. Where have I heard that before....

  2. Texas may still keep the league together. I think the whole pac10 was an ego thing. They'll sit down and think this over and realize adding say boise to the north would still be the easiest track to the bcs game and their tv contract....at least for now...

Boise will not go to the North and why should they? They've owned their cream puff conference for a better part of a decade and have received recognition on the national stage the last few years. They won't give that up to play in a conference where the games will be twice as tough to win.

  3. I agree as well. Total B.S.

The NCAA has no choice but to lower the boom this time because it has been so public. If it was just the Reggie Bush deal, a case could be made someone outside the program had undue influence on a player without the college's knowledge. But when you factor in the O.J. Mayo incident, then it becomes a trend that cannot be ignored. The college was well aware what was going on and chose to turn a blind eye to it.

  4. Ohio's far enough away from Iowa that I never really concerned myself with it before. I always thought Hayden Frye was a good coach and decent guy. Ferentz used to have my respect, but that's waned over time. Nonetheless, I think every state that touches Iowa makes fun of it.

I can agree with you there, muffler.

That Dauber always cracked me up too...

Killer I hate to be that guy.....but it was Hayden Fox on Coach

Yeah, but they do have a real life Dauber as their Defensive Coordinator.

  5. From the LA Times....

NCAA hands USC two-year bowl game ban, major scholarship reduction in football

The penalties come after a four-year investigation into allegations surrounding Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and former basketball star O.J. Mayo. The Trojans will lose more than 20 scholarships in football.

Former USC basketball player O.J. Mayo, left, and former football player Reggie Bush have been at the center of a four-year NCAA investigation that has resulted in a two-year bowl ban for the Trojans and a loss of scholarships. (Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times; Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)

A two-year bowl ban and a loss of more than 20 football scholarships are among the sanctions that the NCAA has dealt USC, a source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

The NCAA, the governing body for collegiate sports, informed USC of its decision after a four-year investigation regarding allegations centered on former football player Reggie Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo. The NCAA could make its decision public as early as today.

USC officials would not confirm that the school had received the NCAA's report.

  6. Looks like a lot of people fell for this one. It's craziness right now.

Let's all keep in mind that "ESPN reporting that a rumor is true" is very different from "Tom Osborne appearing on air in the flesh and announcing it."

You are correct, but these were the same kinds of denials that came out when it was reported that Steve Pedersen and Bill Callahan were fired, and when Bo was hired.

The language doesn't say that we have not agreed in principle to join the Big 10. What they say is that they have not voted on it. The vote is a formality based on discussion held ahead of time.

I deal with "plausible deniability" at my job every day. I am as skeptical as they come, but I will be stunned if 48 hours from now we're not headed to the Big 10.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a politician's non-denial denial. Pack the bags.

  7. Nobody that I've spoken with here in Wisconsin is painting Nebraska as the bad guy. Pretty much everyone here seems to understand that Texas is a vampire that will try to suck the life blood out of any conference it attaches itself to.

Can't wait for the pi$$ing match between UT and USC to see who's the biggest bully on the block. :snacks:

  8. Colorado, Syracuse penalized

    Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA's big boys have figured out how to beat up the little guys in the classroom, too.

    Spend more money.

The newest Academic Progress Rate, released Wednesday, showed seven of the 137 teams facing penalties come from BCS conferences and only two power conference schools -- Colorado and Syracuse -- were sanctioned in football, men's basketball or women's basketball. Both schools said they have already taken the scholarship losses and won't be affected next season....

Colorado was penalized one scholarship in men's basketball and four in football, while Syracuse lost two in men's basketball for falling below the NCAA's 925 cutline. Officials at both schools said they took away the scholarships last season after academically ineligible players left school....

A mathematical formula is then used to calculate a final team score with 1,000 points being perfect. Teams falling below 925 can face conditional scholarship losses. Teams consistently falling below 900 can be penalized more harshly.

Colorado was one of 10 schools to be sanctioned in both sports, though the other nine all compete in the Football Championship Subdivision. And four of those 10 are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

The Buffaloes scored 920 in football and 897 in men's basketball.

"Naturally, the APR score for football is of great concern to both our academic and athletic leadership," Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano said in a statement. "It represents a challenge we are working to meet through our APR improvement plan, new academic support staff in athletics, and renewed focus in recruiting and engagement with our student-athletes."

Oh how the high and mighty have fallen. I'm sure the PAC 10 will have to review if they really want a bunch of dummies dragging their academic standards down. Maybe the Mountain West Conference is taking applications. :laughpound

  9. Whether it's William Tell using a crossbow to shoot an apple off his son's head, or Annie Oakley using a hand mirror to make a shot with a rifle slung over her shoulder, history is filled with legendary tales of amazing marksmanship. Now, HISTORY is tapping into these inspiring feats of sharp-shooting for its first-ever competition series, Top Shot, premiering Sunday, June 6, at 10/9c on HISTORY.

Sixteen of the nation's most skilled marksmen have been carefully selected to compete for the title. Some have professional shooting experience, some are amateurs--and all will showcase breathtaking timing, speed and accuracy in their quest to win the $100,000 prize package and the title of "Top Shot." The winner will ultimately have to be skilled in everything from muzzle-loading muskets and modern pistols to slingshots and throwing knives.

Each week, contenders will face both team and individual elimination challenges until one winner remains. Every challenge will focus on the weapons, technologies and techniques of different historical eras as high-speed HD cameras capture the skillful execution of each test in extreme slow-motion.

Contestants vying for "Top Shot" include professional shooters--like the first woman in the history of the Chicago Police Department to become "Top Gun" of her graduating class--and world-record holders, but there are also amateurs like a Wild West entertainer, a historical firearms collector and a radio gun show host. From a 22-year-old rifle prodigy to a 47-year-old retired city cop, they'll need skill, toughness and nerves of steel to claim the Top Shot title.

  10. You're all wrong. All the shows listed on here so far SUCK, except for The Simpsons. :thumbs

God are you frickin' kidding me? The Simpsons aren't even the best animated show, South Park & Family Guy blow that waste of a half hour outta the water.

This ranks right up there with the most incorrect statements of all time. Family Guy is absolutely, mindlessly, terrible. An absolute atrocity that is embraced by frat guys and junior high students.

    Typical family guy scene:

    Peter walks into his house.

Amelia Earhart is sitting on his couch.

<Everyone laughs because OHMYGOD!!!! Earhart is on his couch!!! HOWRANDOMANDHILARIOUS>

    Just awful.

  11. Hot off the ESPN Big 12 Blog.....

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After daylong discussions regarding the possible breakup of the Big 12, a scheduled news conference was abruptly canceled, fueling speculation that the 12 schools are far from agreement.

A short time earlier, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione had indicated the member schools did not reach the unity that many had hoped these meetings would achieve.

Perhaps also complicating the process was a report out of Texas on Thursday afternoon that the Pac-10 might invite six Big 12 schools to join and form two eight-team divisions. Some Big 12 and Pac-10 officials met informally several few weeks ago to discuss a possible scheduling and television alliance between the leagues.

Speculation of a possible breakup of the 14-year-old Big 12 exploded this spring when the Big Ten said it might expand and Nebraska and Missouri indicated interest.

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe and Texas president Bill Powers had been scheduled to brief reporters at the end of the day on Thursday, the third day of the league's spring meetings.

But after a separate meeting of the presidents ran an hour long, Beebe emerged to say -- as he was pursued by reporters into a waiting elevator -- that the news conference would be on Friday.

"The board is still in session. We won't conclude until tomorrow and we're not going to have any kind of comments about anything the board has been considering or acting upon until tomorrow."

    He refused to elaborate.

In Thursday's joint meeting of athletic directors and presidents, Oklahoma's Joe Castiglione said the ADs all gave their recommendation about whether the league should stay together.

Apparently, the unanimity that many members were hoping to forge proved elusive.

"We all had a chance to express our thoughts," Castiglione said when asked if any of the athletic directors indicated they might want to leave.

So does that mean not everyone was united?

"Everybody expressed their thoughts," he said.

Castiglione and Oklahoma president David Boren have been adamant in their desire to keep the league intact.

"Each athletic director had a chance to convey their thoughts about the future of our conference, and that was great," Castiglione said. "A lot of passion about the Big 12 in that room, I can promise you that."

  12. yeah August birthday...he's right on the cutoff line for most schools

That's where I was. Started Kindergarten on my 5th birthday, moved down to UNL on my 18th birthday. I was one of the youngest kids in my class.

Same here. Graduated HS when I was 17 and turned 18 two months later (August).

    Ditto!

Graduated @ 17. Turned 18 two weeks later.

    Double ditto. Turned 18 (July)

  13. I'm not a big Obama fan, but I think this is step in the right direction. I dont know what the legality of this is, but it seems to be a step in the right direction. Link If anything the AZ law has forced the hand of government to do something.

It's just a window dressing PR stunt. A 1000 troops will make no difference.

Bush sent 6,000 ANG troops four years ago as a stop-gap measure to bide time to get border agents trained. The troops were basically employed as secretaries and glorified Jiffy Lube workers for the ICE motor pool.

Thanks for that sarge. I remember W sent some over there, but couldn't figure out how many, and I too thought they pretty much made coffee all day. If there was only some sort of wall type device we could build... hmmmm

Absolutely. I'm all for building a wall/strengthening border patrols. That seems like a no-brainer to me.

    You're preaching to the choir.

But the problem is that neither Republicans or Democrats on The Hill want to do anything about this. I take that back. Some of the ones who have been vocal about the problem have been branded by the media and other illegal immigrant proponents as racists.

Some Republicans would rather take a pass because Agriculture and Business like the cheap labor. Democrats take a pass because they want that 20-60 million strong future voting block after amnesty to keep them in power for generations.

I sympathize with illegals wanting better life for themselves and their families but this can't continue to go on unchecked. We are importing a new slavery class with little vocational skills and minute education. How does broadening the poverty class do anything for the US except increasing the demand for government subsidies? Why isn't the US government putting pressure on Mexico to improve conditions for their people instead of letting it's president lecture us about racial profiling in the People's House to a standing ovation by those who I will not mention for the sake of not getting a banhammer lowered?

The bolded isn't entirely true. The hispanic vote has gone more democratic lately because they feel that the democratic party is more sympathetic to their needs/less latent racism than the republican party. (I'm not saying I agree with that.) However, in general, hispanics probably trend more conservative. Mexico, for example, is about 87% Catholic. Those people will have some serious issues with the pro-choice democrats and other traditionally left talking points.

I will agree that Hispanics tend to be socially conservative but politically they are populists because most governments south of the border tend to lean more socialist than capitalist.

  15. Probe shows extent of Kansas scam

    Associated Press

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- There was no reason to suspect anything was wrong at the University of Kansas. The teams were winning, the stands were full, the donor money continued to roll in.

But behind the scenes, working side-by-side within the athletics department, a group of six employees had allegedly hatched a lucrative ticket-scalping scheme.

Details of the scam were outlined Wednesday in a report that found the "inappropriate" sale of at least $1 million worth of basketball and football tickets to brokers over the past five years, leaving school officials embarrassed.

"Being on the athletics side, the simplest way to try to describe this is that there was a curveball thrown and I missed it," athletic director Lew Perkins said. "I missed that curveball. It got by. We had the wrong people hired for the wrong the jobs.

The school said the findings, contained in a report done by a Wichita law firm, have been sent to federal investigators already looking into allegations of wrongdoing in the athletics department and the school's athletics fundraising arm, the Williams Educational Fund.

The investigation said five Kansas athletics staffers and a consultant -- all of them no longer employed by the school -- sold or used at least 17,609 men's basketball tickets, 2,181 football tickets and a number of parking passes and other passes for personal purposes. The report showed over $887,000 in basketball tickets and more than $122,000 worth of football tickets were involved.

And it may be higher than that.

Because investigators did not have subpoena power, the amounts could climb as high as $3 million once the federal probe is complete, according to Jack Focht, attorney for Foulston Siefkin. He said it's also possible the scam could have started much earlier since accurate records were only kept back to 2005.
