  1. As you guys know the walk on program at Nebraska has a long and storied history.

I just wanted to pass along that one of the youngest walk on letter winners in Nebraska Football history passed this week. Lyle Kopps from Bassett, Nebraska passed way this week at the age of 84. He played tackle and was only sixteen when he won the first of two letters before going into military service. He was an avid Husker football fan and at his funeral after the closing prayer they played the Husker fight song. The Methodist Church was packed full and as the fight song started everyone stood up and clapped to the fight song giving Lyle a Husker send off. As he was taken out of the church every one filed outside where speakers were set up - still playing the fight song and all of the Grand Children holding red and white balloons let them go as Lyle was put into the Hurst.

I just wanted to pass this along.

  2. I think (hope) Bo decides to let Carl work on the defense and take some interest in the offense. Either were going to be a power running team or run the spread but for crying out loud, let's make up our minds and recruit players that can run that system and stick to it.

Exactly create an identity as they have with the defense and stick to it!!! While I must say I have placed Watson's head on the chopping block I feel he should have one more year. Thats being said I hope between now and the bowl game he - Oz and Bo sit down and map out a plan for the offense.

With that gang we gotta move on and wait to see who and where we play in the bowl game! Hey at least we are going somewhere!!!! :cheers

  3. if ifs and buts were beers and sluts, we'd have us a hell of a party

LOL Exactly until Bo lays down the law and crates an identity for our offense now we are going to be stuck with this fart in a whirl wind play calling and poor execution on the offensive line which is the root of our offensive problems. I say Bo because ultimately he is the head coach and he has to sit Watson and the offensive coaches down and say hey boy's this is what we are gonna do for the bowl game and beyond. Whoever isn't on board - there is the door. I really feel we have the minds (coaches) and some degree of talent we just have to create an identity with the players we have.

Remember the ol days when we cussed TO and his play calling - we all know how that turned out and one last thing. At least we are winning and going to a bowl game - remember a few years ago?? We will get there we just gotta be patient and while games like last night test our patients - we will get there Husker fans!!!! I have faith :restore

  4. While I question Lee's arm strength I feel he is the victim of poor offensive game planning and execution. Nebraska needs to find an identity on offense and I feel it is doable with the players we have, the head man Bo Peleni himself needs to step in and be more hands on.

I remember back in the day we all cussed TO's play calling from time to time - remember those days!!??? LOL

Bottom line folks remember where we were just a few short years ago. Now we have a winning team and are going to a good bowl game - It could be worse.

  5. After having some time to stew on this loss if we fellow Husker Board members really look at the whole game it boils down to execution.

First and foremost is obviously the offence. While we all look to Watson as the problem we can also lay some blame at the feet of the head coach – yep that’s right Bo himself. He is the head coach and if there is a problem on the team he needs to address it. Bo is a fantastic defensive tactician and therefore that expertise would be an excellent tool to dissect an opponent’s defense and put together a scheme to be affective. Remember folks our defense is largely players that were here when Bo got here. Bo assembled a defensive coaching staff that has developed one of the most awesome defensive teams that has ever been at Nebraska. Except for Watson, the offensive staff was chosen by Bo – with as it has been debated TO’s input. So we get to the meat of the matter.

While Watson’s play calling is all over the board to say the least the foundation is the offensive line. Is our offensive coaching staff that poor that we can not scheme a blocking attack to run and pass? For pete’s sake we have the ball first and goal on the ten yard line and at any point in the game can not come up with three to four play’s to score. Thing is if you look back at the game except for some rare occasions our offensive line looked confused and just plain did not execute. Once again we can’t seem to catch a pass and our pass routs are awful. For some reason we can’t seem to run routs to get open and if they do the catch the ball out of bounds or drop the ball. For the bowl game I have but one wish and that is for Bo and the offensive staff to sit down and say OK guy’s this is what we are gonna do.

The last point I have on execution is while yes our offense was – well offensive lets remember that our punter only kicked the ball 31 yards on at least three occasions giving Texas a short field. We had a defensive back have – and correct me if I am wrong - two pass interference penalties, one of which let Texas get to the four yard line. Lastly when we needed a kick off in the end zone – we kick it out of bounds. As we all know had our offense given any signs of life we would be going to the Fiesta bowl but it did not. Bo PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take the time to be the great head coach you can be and work with the offense. I strongly believe we have enough talent to do better – we just have to hope the coaches can bring it out of the offense as they have with the defense.

    CREATE AN IDENTITY ON OFFENSE!!!!

  6. Let me ask you guys this - come September, 2008, is anyone really going to care that Pelini coached in this game nine months previously?

It may not seem like a good idea right now, but in the grand scheme of things I think this is a relatively harmless situation.

You are 100% right. But I remember in the press conference he was asked, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Will you coach in LSU's bowl game?" I think his reply was " AS of today I am the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and I start work as of today."

Somthing to that affect. Now since they wound up getting a shot at the national championship evedently put a way different spin on it. Also tells me MIles was fine to see him go but isn't to sure about not havig him there since the bowl game is for all of the marbles.

The thing that will really be tough is if they lose on a defensive play and the stigma tha may follow.

  7. I feel in the Pelini case coming to Nebraska and in all cases it doesn't matter if it is LSU, Nebraska, Georigia who or whereever there is no accountablility for thier actions. If it does not work out and they lose and lose horribly, they will not be around to answer for what went wrong. " Sorry I guy's I 'd like to stay around and help ya but I have another gig and I gotta go.

If you take another job somewhere else - thanks for the memories and we will see ya.

I understand loyalty to players and all of that and I know the players in these instances always want their coach to lead them one more time but coaches especially on the college level are suppose to be teachers and how often have we been told "Ya can't have your cake and eat it too" These coaches want to go be a head coach and coach at a different school - then go and be done with it.

I wonder if this wasn't the National Championship game, would he still want to go back for the last game?

  8. Something else I would liek to add if I may.

We gotta move forward and support the choice that was made. Are there going to be mistakes and bumps along the way, heck yeah, but I feel we have someone as a head coach that isn't afraid to make a change if somehting isn't working the way it needs to. Time will tell.

Lets just let our new coach and who ever he hires breath a little bit and see what happens.

Something to think about is Pelini appears to not only inspire his players but who's to say he can't bring his staff to a new level as well.

  9. Maybe is was not so much Dr. Tom telling Pelini who to hire as much as Pelini discussing the people he would look at for his staff. Maybe Pelini said, I liked working with Brown or Cotton or Gill or whoever and discussed how these people would work in his staff.

When Dr. Tom talked to Grobe, maybe he said here is my staff and Dr. Tom just asked about other coaches that might hasve ties to Nebraska in the past and Grobe did not know these guys or did not want to take that path.

I do no believe that Dr. Tom told Pelini who to hire, though he might have had some input based on Pelini asking for input. Grobe is not a bad guy for not having that mentality and he did not get the job...no harm and nothing against him.

After all, Brown did say that Pelini told him back in 03 that if he was the new Head coach he wanted Brown on his staff. Pelini is following through with things he talked about back then...I am excitied to see the changes and I truely hope this tunrs out good for Coach Pelini and the team. I believe it will.

This was my thought as well. When Bo was here four years ago I think he saw what he liked in some of the personel that was here and wants to bring them back.

I have no doubt how ever if someone isn't getting the job done the will be replaced.

You have to admit, pre Callahan the Huskers were a complete team and for the most part, and I know there were some exceptions, they supported one another. Not to say they don't now , but I think it was more of a brotherhood rather something you have to do because it is your team mate type of thing. Unless you have been a part of an organization like that it is hard to explain.

  10. We are off to a fantastic start...Pelini said all the right things...and having his family show up dressed in Husker Red...nice touch. I do wish that he would have had his baggy sweatshirt on though....I like the image.

I bet we'll see alot of his Red/gray Husker baggy sweatshirt!!!!!

    I can hardly wait!

We need to pack Memorial Stadium for the Spring game! :bonez:bonez:bonez:bonez:bonez:bonez:bonez:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:restore:restore:restore:restore:restore:restore:restore:restore WOOHOO!

From '83 through the '94 season I wore the same baggy gray Husker sweatshirt. It got to be a bit ragged but it got to be a thing with me. It has been retired to my mantle inbetween pictures of Corey S. scoring against Miami and Tommie's TD run against Florida. With Bo comming to town I may take it out of retirement for a game or two next year.

Might want ta wash it first ok !!! :sarcasm

  11. But after a 21-14 win Saturday over Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference title game and losses later by then-No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia, LSU jumped to the second spot in the BCS standings Sunday.

It will play Ohio State Jan. 7 the national title in New Orleans.

Interesting. After the interview either Dave Weber or Ross Jerstrom commented that now that LSU is number 2 and could be playing for the national championship, Bo is mulling over whether to go back and coach it. Would NU allow him to do that? I think it would be a nice thing for him to be able to do but I'm wondering if his workload here is so large that he won't have time to do it? What do you all think?

I say no for two reasons.

    1) LSU has a month to prepare for the game against Ohio St. If Less Miles is any kind of leader he should be able to plug in one of the other defensive coach's and do fine. Remember 4 years agao Frank didn't get a Mulligan so to speak and the Huskers came out fine.

    2) He answered the question point blank at the press conference that he was here and ready to start work. Just cause things changed don't mean you can go back now. I thought he gained a lot of cedibility at the press conference, he will lose a bunch if he goes back on it now. They knew on the flight back what the scores were. They also knew there was a possibility that they might be back in the NC hunt. If he wanted to coach in that game he should have waited to come here or talked to TO before the press conference. I can't see TO allowing him to coach.

What really got me jazzed up was when he said he was here ready to go to work today. I understand him building that defence and whating to coach in that game but you have to ask your self if LSU knew by winning that game they were in the NC game would we have had a press conference today?
