  1. I've been a member of this website only a short time, but in that time, I distinctly recall reading how Callahan treated NU players like meat, as if he didn't know them, and, most importantly, as if he didn't respect them as players. He showed no loyalty, as I seem to heva read several times in the Lincoln newspaper. Now, many of you are complaining that Bo has neither the right nor the reason to go with LSU to the national championship. Well, before you form an opinion on that, remember this: LSU players are young men who worked as hard as any NU player. And just as you asked Callahan to respect Nebraska traditions and the very people who played for NU and left their hearts on the field in Memorial Stadium (which Callahan didn't seem to do), so too should you expect your new coach to respect the players who have worked for him at LSU. Think about it: Bo walks into some new recruit's home and when they ask why he went with LSU to the NC game and he's wearing a championship ring, then he's also showing that young man what dedication and loyalty is all about. And that one very quality, loyalty, or the lack of, is something I heard many, many people complian about every time I attended a recent game at Memorial Stadium. So, you go ahead and coach LSU in the NC game, Bo: the lesson you teach will be invaluable.
  2. My Husker friends: Take care about how much stock you place in anything ESPN columnist Pat Forde says: He was a sportswriter for the Louisville Courier Journal before going to ESPN (where I live) and was forbidden for almost a year from writing any columns in the paper because he made certain errors in reporting that almost cost him his job. The editor of the paper refused to let him submit sorts editorials because of his mistake, that's how serious it was. He's a small town idiot who wants to run with the big boys. He's arrogant, opinionated, and small time. He and Mark May have a lot in common: they both stick their over-sized feet in their twice-as-over-sized-mouths hoping someone, anyone, will, listen. Maybe that's why Trev Alberts, who I respect LOADS more than Mark May, isn't on ESPN anymore. So, if Forde says Pellini is the next coach, be careful before you believe it.
  3. According to ESPN, Wanstedt was given a one year extension on his contarct either yesterday or this morning...interesting. It's one of those things, with the Queen Pud coming back to Pitt that makes you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
  4. Okay, let me see if I have this correct...Pederson returns to Pitt after doing his best to destroy a storied program such as NU? Those idiots north of the Mason-Dixon line actually rehired that freak AFTER everything he did to Nebraska? GIVE ME A BREAK! I was born and raised in Virginia and came to enjoy and respect Nebraska football after I married a Lincoln girl who showed me what tradition in football is all about. I will say this about those "Damn Yankees:" they desreve Pederson for all they did to my beloved Old Dominion 1861-1865 and for what he did to NU. Please, don't get me wrong: Nebraska might not be my home state, but I have come to love the state. My wife's grandmother lived in Springview and the long drive from Lincoln to there was simply beautiful, particularly in the fall. I find Nebraska to be a beautiful state with a great deal to offer. As a history teacher, I appreciate the fact that people, many who were from the south as I am, traveled across the country long, long ago, and settled a land that was harsh. They sacrificed, they worked together, and they came to love and to depend on their neighbors. In most respect, neighbors became family, or something very close to family as it became ever so clear that in order to survive, everyone would need to help out. Despite the hardships, people continued to settle in Nebraska from very state in the Union and from any number of nations across the globe. They made it work and in the process they forged a way of life that became special and unique. They created a brand of people who worked hard, that expected YOU to work hard too, to pitch in, and who also gave when a neighbor needed it. Every chance was given and every opportunity was willingly and cheerfully provided to succeed, but if you cheated those who braved the Indian wars, the ever-changing weather, or, perhaps, most importantly, a friend or family member, then the people who settled Nebraska made it clear that you had just lost your last opportunity to ever again take advantage of the very person (or people, community, or family) who had reached out to help you. For those who left but returned, a hardy and heartfelt welcome was provided, just as it is today when I, an easterner by birth, visit my inlaws in Lincoln. Later, again through hard work, perseverance, and, above all, dedication, the same people, and their sons and grandsons created a special university with a special football team where only the best was accepted. That, my midwestern friends, is why I stand amazed, yet happy, in a sense, that Pittsburgh rehired Pederson. He was NEVER the best, he was NEVER a real fit, and he although he called himself a son of the NEbraska, he NEVER had a true sense of what Nebraska football means to the good people of the Cornhusker State. If he had any real inkling of tradition or home pride, then why leave and go back to the north? Why not stay and prove to the people fo Nebraska that he was sorry for what he did not only to the school but to one of the best teams ever in college football? Why not stay and somehow, someway, atone for his mistakes? Nebraskans, I am sure, would have forgiven him after a while (my wife has certainly forgiven me for the stupid mistakes I've made!). Pederson cheated you, Nebraska, and you have every right to be angry. He cheated family. So, here's to you University of Pittsburgh: You can have that converted Yankee back.
  5. Here's an idea my wife, a Lincoln native, NU alum, and life-long NU fan came up with. As a former football coach, it makes sense to me. So, before anyone laughs, give my following comments some serious thought...My wife suggested that NU go after Bill Cowher, the former Pittsburgh Steeler coach. BUT, and hang with me here, NU also lures Turner Gill away from Buffalo and the two combine to, first, bring back the winning record to NU, and, secondly, they also bring back that unexplainable yet ever so prevalent entity known as the Husker tradition. Cowher could be hired for a maximum of three - four years with the understanding that after that time, Turner Gill takes over as the new head coach. Think about it: Would Cowher let Kansas or anyone else off the hook? No, I doubt he would. Would Cowher have allowed Colorado to come back from an 11 point deficit? Nope. But at the same time, Cowher could also be the one person who gets the Blackshirt defense where it once was because we all know Cowher takes crap off no one. He'd fire up the new Blackshirts, the REVAMPED Blackshirts, and anyone who faces the NU defense will have to hear war stories from their friends, fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, etc. about how the NEW Blackshirts sure look like those of old. Cowher could bring in someone such as Tom Rathman to help out with the BS Defense in the role of Defensive Coach. At the same time, Turner Gill would work with the offense and while he might bring back the option offense, he could also install newer and more contemporary plays that are specifically designed to counter the various forms of offenses in use by any number of schools around the nation. That way, when other big time schools such as USC returns to Lincoln (and after NU becomes again the power it once was, then big-time schools would HAVE to come to Lincoln or schedule NU for a home game) then they do so facing a defense and an offense that will put it to them in any number of ways. Gill could possibly bring in Scott Frost or Eric Crouch to help with the offense. By doing so, you've got a return to Nebraska tradtion which the fan base so desperately seeks. After Cowher leaves, and Gill assumes the head position, then what's left but a return to national prominence as well as a return to post-season games which are BCS games rather than the watered-down bowl games we see now that are really more of a consolation prize than they are true, meaningful bowl games? Additionally, after Cowher's departure, almost the entire staff would be former NU players who surely WOULD NOT allow anyone to wear the NU jersey who doesn't understand and apprecciate what it means to play in Memorial Stadium. New recruits would be amazed to see Bill Cowher, Turner Gill, Eric Crouch, and any number of former Husker greats in their living rooms, as would their fathers if they know anything at all about NU football. I know all this sounds far fetched, but think back: so was the hiring of Bill Callahan far-fethced for that matter. I'll anxiously look for replies to this message...
  6. GEEZ!! I watched the video and found myself both fired up and relieved! Why relieved? That's because I'm glad it wasn't ME who had to line up against the Black Shirts of old...Those guys were MANIACS! I believe I would have crapped my pants if I'd have to face the Black Shirts! I'm a Husker fan by marriage: I married a Lincoln girl and she turned me on to Big Red football. Even though I'm from the east coast, I gotta admit Nebraska football is something else. Hang in there, everyone...it won't be long until Nebraska fans are watching the Huskers in post-season play again, and I'm talking about one of those bowl games that are played AFTER New Years and the game is for the National Championship. Hey, I believe!
