  1. This question can be answered two ways. I think the better running back, in the long run, will be Burkhead. But, I think Helu is going to have a better season if you solely compare their yards by season end.

helu has one bad season because he has one nagging injury that the coaches wouldn't just bench him...does anyone not remember this guys monster sophomore year...even injury riddled last year(one nagging injury) he still put up big yards and had big plays(saved the kansas game with a big run)...i know rex is the new big thing, got to meet him and it was awesome, but i think helu will show what we all thought he would be last year

I think people forget how good Helu is. Rex is the "new toy" and immediately became a crowd favorite. Its easy to cheer for a guy like Rex. He is a coaches dream and exactly what parents would want their sons to be. Hes a hard worker, has great character, and very dedicated on and off the field. All this said ON THE FIELD Helu is a better player. I think Rex is more of a "grinder" and Nebraska fans have a soft spot in their heart for this kind of a guy. Im SURE Rex has improved a lot but IMO Helu is still a better RB. I simply go back to the VT and OU games and no other back we had performed CLOSE to that level. I think Burkheads best game at Colorado was good but nowhere near the level that Roy Helu is at.

I honestly expect their years to be similar.Rex will get some wildcat carries and catch more passes than Helu. I expect Roy to average more ypc(from behind center anyway). They will split it 55-45 to me(Helu 55%) with a goal to keep both healthy.Hopefully that works. Roy will outrush him while I honestly think Rex gets to close games out.

  2. Lol I feel you on this one, shyndy. He's gotta be smoking something if he thinks Washington is that much better than our backs. Mizzou's "First B12N team to run the spread" mystique is gone, and Washington isn't gonna gashing our D this year. Take that to the bank.

    :rollin

    Hi dudeguyy,

Nice to meet you. My name is Fro Daddy. I see that you are new to football. I can help you with info on MU if you ever need it. And you can ask you Husker brethren about things that happened previous to last year...

    Here are some fun facts:

-Mu's Rushing Avg against NU since going to the spread in 05 - 198 yrds a game

-Since going to the spread Mu has never had less than 119 yards against NE

-Since going to the spread Mu is 3-1 against NE

-NE hasnt won in Columbia since 2001.

-In Bo Bo's two games agaisnt MU his D has given up 235 yrds passing and 221 yrds rushing per game (and that includes his 2003 #1 ranked D at the time, cause your new, you wouldnt have know that)

OH!! I almost forgot. Somethings "mystique" or novelty usually would wear off by the second time you have seen it. This will be the 5 time. So....not sure where you were going with that...Opps! I forgot, your new to football.

1 more point for you since I sure you wont know this, But...MU beat NE before Daniel, Maclin, Coffman, Moore, Hood, ect...

So pretending like now that those guys are gone, its "back to normal" wont do you any good. Maybe since your new to football you could ask the older folks about when they said that same things when Brad Smith, Justin Gage, Dwayne Blakely, Damian Nash, Atiyyah Ellison, ect... all left MU. How'd that turn out for you again... <_<

:laughpound BTW I am a smart arse and this post was done in fun :clap SO dont take it personal and go and get your panties in a bunch. ;) Its Thursday, one day closer to Friday and I am in a good mood so I though I would have some fun with you.

    :LOLtartar

STYLES MAKE FIGHTS.I think this comparison is an example of that.Just like a boxer can be tailor made for another and a terrible match for another its the same with football.

A guy like Q is a bigger guy his strengths wont be going sideline to sideline on a fast defense but running it down that defenses throat.Clemson had one of the 3 fastest defenses that we faced last year and while they were very fast they were a good match for Q...not so for Helu.Q is more a 1 cut downhill runner while Helu is probably a little better at getting outside.Against Clemson they were enrirely to fast to run outside on so Helu ended up being less effective PLUS he was injured/hurt also.

Its just like having a big CB on a big WR its a better matchup for the CB because PHYSICALLY he can match the strength of a big bodied WR where as a smaller CB MAY be the better CB he simply doesnt match up well with a bigger stronger guy.

JMHO its hard to judge these guys.Im sure Mizzu wouldnt trade Washington for Helu and I KNOW NU fans nor coaches would trade Helu for Washington. That said I honestly think most of the country will be suprised at how good Helu is this year.PERSONALLY I think Washington is more of a product of MUs system but that remains to be seen.IMO hes the benefit of teams worrying about Maclin,Coffman,Daniels etc.I think we will see just how good he is this year as well.Lets have this same conversation in November and see if anyones opinions change.

  3. i just got the athlon magazine, and it has antonio bell ahead of both niles paul and mendoza......anyone think this is messed up

Mendoza not really. Paul yes I am a little surprised

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Tim Marlowe, Khiry Cooper and Antonio Bell all supplanted Chris Brooks, Niles Paul and Will Henry as the top WR's.

I'm sorry but thus far Niles Paul has been a huge disappoinment. Sure he has very good straight line speed but when it comes to cutting and changing directions he's average at best.

C'mon Niles...make me eat crow...prove you are the legit WR most other Husker fans think you are.

I could agree about Bell passing them but Id have to question Khiry Cooper AND Marlowe.Cooper basically missed the entire spring.Im a huge fan of his and think POTENTIALLY Cooper and Bell could be the best pair of WRs we have had. Both have good height, size and speed.I just wish Cooper could be here for spring but of course baseball gets most of his spring attention.Talent wise ...YES I agree Cooper could pass all three guys BUT we know how hard it GENERALLY is for our guys to get this system down.I just dont see how Cooper could pass them...even though IMO he is more talented than them.

Now as far as Marlowe I just think his job will GENERALLY be as a slot guy in our offense.I do think hes explosive and may have a couple plays designed for him but I doubt we will see him as an every down WR over either of these guys.IMO he MIGHT play when their is multiple WRs sets BUT if he were to surpass Paul I think that would that would put him in the top 2-3 guys...I dont see that.Top 6?maybe but not top 3.

  4. I believe we may have done a similar thread last offseason.

My choice: Anthony Blue. I think Blue bounces back from the knee injury and really makes some noise in the secondary this year! The guy is 5'10", 185, and prior to his knee injury, he ran the 200m in 21.17. Assuming he makes a full recovery, Blue has the height and speed to be a solid corner. Also, I just cant take another year of watching Anthony West give up the long ball, or any ball that is in the air for that matter.. <_<

    Your thoughts?

Im taking a CB as well but mine is Dennard. He has it al.The moment he puts it all together mentally is the moment he becomes a star.Heres my prediction.By seasons end he will have beaten out West and start at CB opposite Prince.

  5. Here's my "dream" formation, I'll call it Shotgun, Quads Right:

    .....................................TE...LT...LG...OC...RG...RT......................................................WR

    ........................................................................................WR.......WR.......WR

    ..........................................................QB

Now keep in mind it could be Quads Left and/or you could line the WR's up in any way you choose.

I wonder why this formation has never been used before?

    Doesn't Missouri use this?

I don't know. The only time I care about what Missery is doing is when they're playing Nebraska.

    :box

We couldnt match Clemsons speed either...

Okay, what Gator Bowl did you watch? :laughpound

I really did think Clemson was a lot faster than the Huskers. I just thought Clemson's QB was awful, their execution was bad and they could not move the ball in a consistent manner. You all deserved your win, but Clemson was the much faster team.

Exactly from top to bottom Clemson was a much faster team than Nebraska.Listen Im a huge fan but I know speed when I see it.Clemson was as fast as any team we played this year EXCEPT maybe OU.Just because we won the game doesnt mean they were not faster. That said of theams we lost to this year...MU,OU,VT and TT were all faster than us as a whole in fact Clemson was the only team that had more team speed that we beat this year.FACTS.

  6. I'm still suprised we didn't throw out a package like this against Missiouri (when we played them) or Oklahoma, in attempt to match their speed.

No offense but there wasnt an offensive set we could have used to match OUs speed...wasnt happening. That said it doesnt mean we couldnt have been effective against them.We couldnt match Clemsons speed either but we found a way to get the job done.Personally I think UF showed how to beat OU.Of course you need talent to do it.Spread em out with speed all over the field and then run at them using misdirection/option/power.

I think BP knows that and although some say it wont happen I still see us moving toward a UF style offense in the future. We must get some speed outside though in order to be truly effective in that style offense.

  7. No we cant do it.We dont have near the talent or speed across the board that those teams did.Our talent has been very over rated AND underveloped. Those days are gone now.The guys we get now will be coached up and developed to their fullest. That said we dont have the speed talent across the board as Florida,OU or OSU did in their second years.

IMHO anything close to what we did last year would be great.I think other than QB which is a huge spot we will be better all over.Especially on defense. If Lee can be anywhere close to as effective as Ganz was we will be a pretty good team.We could have a better team this year and a worse record though.VT,KU,MU,and CU all on the road as well as OU.Throw in TT and the schedule will much more difficult than last year.Id take 9-4 and be very happy this year. That said by seasons end I EXPECT us to be as good if not BETTER than ANY team in the Big 12 North(we was the best team last year at seasons end).Hopefully Lees inexperience doesnt cost us a game early. If it doesnt I think we have a chance to be a 9 maybe even 10 win team. But National Championship is a HUGE REACH.

  8. :yeah

Thats very true AND its also the reason BP/Wats wants NU to be able to line up and smash some teams with the run game.Right now everyone is basing and scheming their way to slow down these high powered spread offenses in the big 12.If a team finds a power rushing attack/spread hybrid that they can execute at a high level(see OU) teams lining up to stop the spread will be hard pressed to slow them downThats one reason I dont want NU to go to a full all out spread on offense. If you can somehow have some spread installed in your offense to go along with the power/option game it will be near impossible to stop by teams who BASICALLY are building their defenses around stopping spread offenses.Thats why you see BP /Wats tweaking our offense to the point that they can become a power running team as well as enough option to make teams have to practice for it.ADD that to the spread passing game and you will see an offense thats VERY hard to contain.Mobile QBs simply make it worse on defenses and BP knows that.

He has told Wats things that are very hard to defend as a DC and is having them implement it into our offensive philosophy.I think in about three years we will have an offense that is a combination of Florida and OUs .A hypbrid spread that features power running, options, the zone reads as well as the QB run game.IMHO it will give defense fits.Especially when you have versatile guys like Kyler Reed and McNeil at TE.These guys can be in line blockers as well as being split wide as receivers(think Gresham from OU).If you line up in nickel the bring them on line and run down your throats but if you play base you gotta have LBs who can run with Reed all day.I count count on 1 hand the number of teams who will have guys like that. This offense will have our TEs as walking mismatches.Very similar again to how OU uses Gresham and Florida uses Ingram and the big TE who killed OU in the NCG.

  9. 1. Beat down in Lubbock, 70-10, in 2004

    2. Firing a head coach who had better than a 75% winning percentage (Solich) in 2003.

    3. Offering the head coaching job to Houston Nutt, of all people, WHO THEN TURNED IT DOWN (ouch, that hurt!)

    4. Hiring Bill Callahan (the official beginning of the dark years).

    5. The beat down at the Rose Bowl (one could argue that this was the beginning of the dark years), that occurred in January 2002.

Bonus: The beat down at Colorado in 2001, which may well have precipitated numbers 5, 2, 4, and 1.

1.The beatdown in Boulder to CU was a clue in which way our program was headed. Many dismissed that as just a bad game but all the signs were there THEN that FS was in over his head as a HC at Nebraska.

2.The massive "undressing" that was TT in Lubbock in 2004.That whipping alone was the single molst hardest game I ever watched as a Husker fan.

3.Allowing KU to drop 76 on us 2 years ago. That was the omega of the BC era imo.Nothing he did after that could have saved his job.As much as I wanted FS to get fired BC was absolutely NOT the right person for the job.He was every bit as bad if not mor so than FS.

4.The USC game in 06 I think where our coaches basically played to NOT get blown out.I understand we were facing a more talented team. But the very game plan told the players that the coaches had NO CONFIDENCE in them beating USC.The coaches had lost that game before they even stepped on the field.

5.2002(entire season).Just watching the once proud program that I cheer for turn into a below average teamLosing to the likes of ISU and basically beoming just "ANOTHER" team.

  10. For anyone interested Steve Sipple was on 1620 yesterday giving his observations of the team based on attending last Friday's practice. You can check out the podcast. It is April 6th, Seg 7, Kevin with Steve Sipple:

    http://1620thezone.com/pages/727732.php

He spoke most highly of Helu, Castille and Suh.

Was there any mention of Okafor? All I heard when we recruited him was what a manchild he was and his greatness. Now, I hear absolutely nothing about him. Is he not panning out, or are there just that many that are better? Is there a chance he makes it into the rotation?

I read a few things about him, but no links. Okafor is a barn burner, but one thing he was criticized for in high school was his inability to make cuts and read holes, something Helu does very well. My guess is that he has the physical tools, mostly, but the mental tools are what is keeping him back. Obviously something is up because Lester Ward is apparently the third back, and Ward wasn't as highly rated as Okafor was.

Yeah, I have heard he is the fastest back we have right now. BUT, if you ever watched his HS footage, all his long runs are pretty much straight down the field. His vision and cutting seems to be his weakness. Hopefully he will develop that a little bit at some point. Some guys never do. Ward was rated a ** in part because he had a hard time staying healthy his last couple of years of high school... if he had the chance to put it together and show what he could do, he pry would have been rated higher. Some players are just natural at finding lanes and making things happen (Helu - Who in many posters opinions when we signed him should have been moved to LB before he stepped on campus  )

Not sure how small Helu was but he was 206 pounds or so as a HS junior.I know he stated last year that he started out at 198 because of an injury but my guess is that he was initially heavier than that.I wouldnt consider a 205 pound junior(HS) at RB as small.I think Lucky weighed in at 202 as a junior and Id consider that to be about an average sized back.

  11. Wald wants to bring hard hits to secondary

By BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

    Tuesday, Mar 24, 2009 - 12:15:21 am CDT

The high school football coach in Alabama has been in the profession for 37 years. Mason Wald hit as hard as any of them, he says.

If you don’t want to take Buddy Anderson’s word for it, there’s evidence floating about in cyberspace, where highlight footage of Wald making wide receivers dizzy can be found.

And you better believe some Husker fans have found it. The sophomore safety hasn’t yet played a down in Nebraska’s secondary, but Wald’s high school highlights have already netted him a collection of fans among those who closely follow Husker recruiting.

The support is appreciated, but Wald also knows looking back won’t help him move forward. “That’s high school,” Wald said, “so it doesn’t even count anymore.”

Wald knows he’s about to take part in a challenging competition for playing time in Nebraska’s defensive back seven. Plenty of youthful promise can be found there, but now is the time to sort out exactly which young players are ready to cash in potential for playing time.

Having spent last season on special teams, Wald is anxious to show what he can do at strong safety, the spot from which he delivered all those hard knocks in high school.

“I like it,” Wald said of the heavy competition. “Whoever the best guy is should be the person out there. I don’t want to have no competition and play just because there’s nobody else to put in.”

What Wald thinks will help him is a year of game action on special teams, where he had six tackles. Wald was one of just five true freshmen who played last year, and two of those five (Sean Fisher and Cameron Meredith) played in just one game and received medical redshirts.

“I feel like I understand the speed of the game, the physicality of the game,” Wald said. “I’m definitely glad I (played). I don’t regret it at all. I wanted to play as a freshman. I feel like I can get my degree in four years.”

The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder from Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham, Ala., has always liked hitting.

Anderson, his high school coach, recalls a blow Wald delivered to seal a state quarterfinal game. A fourth-down pass across the middle looked like a sure completion. But Wald met the receiver just as the ball arrived.

Game over and a headache for the receiver.

“That’s just how I think it should be played,” Wald says. “It’s how I’ve always played football. It’s why you’re wearing pads.”

Earning playing time won’t be easy this year. Senior Larry Asante seems to have a firm grip on the starting job at strong safety, perhaps the only position in Nebraska’s back seven that appears to have a clear favorite.

But Wald is ready to push and maybe surprise. He has surprised before. After all, he wasn’t on many recruiting radar screens while he was in high school before a surprise offer from Nebraska.

“I got recruited real late,” Wald said. “I didn’t put myself out there. I didn’t really know how it works. I thought if you’re good, then they’ll just find out about you. But you kind of got to put yourself out there.”

Nebraska happened to be recruiting one of Wald’s teammates, Justin Rogers. Husker coaches heard about Wald.

The day they saw his highlight tape, they offered a scholarship.

Several months later, he was covering kicks in front of 85,000 fans.

It was cool, he said. Mind-boggling. “Definitely better than not playing at all.”

    :hellloooo Love it!

I love his attitude and the way he plays the game. That said his speed or lack there f may limit his PT as far as Safety goes.

  12. I find it interesting that so many people want more speed on defense, but the fastest LB on the team is a walk-on (May) so some of these same people don't think he'll be a starter or significant contributor. I think there's a reason those schollie LB's stayed redshirted - May and Holt are good players. I think May will end up in the 2 deep this fall at WLB with a definite chance to be the starter.

Having speed is only one part of the deal.Tierre Green and Andrew Shanle were probably our fastest two DBs a couple years ago as well. What kind of football players are they? You need fast FOOTBALL PLAYERS to be successful.Nothing against May because he he looked pretty good in the limited time that I saw him but Ill be very suprised if he takes snaps from Whaley or Lawrence.Holt and May are good gap fillers who did good in the pinch but Id hate to face a schedule next year with either starting.

Again, that kind of sounds like you are saying if they are walk-ons, they should not play ahead of scholarship players. Because we have not even seen Whaley play yet, and from what I have seen of Lawrence, these two are just as good. I think we need to take in account how good Bo is at developing players, and forget about who is a walk-on, and who is on scholarship.

You make a good point about Whaley but word around camp is that Whaley is our best LB.YES BEST LB as a Rfr.Im not doubting may one bit but when Lawrence and May were both healthy Lawrence got the reps and May watched. We all know as you stated that Bo isnt scared to play walk ons so why would Lawrence play instead of May?Just maybe he is BETTER?Listen Im not tryingto bash these kids because the walk ons are needed and have their place in the program. But for guys thinking these guys will be starting for us for the most part will be disappointed.I never questioned his speed but as I said if all you had to do to be a great LB was being fast recruiting wouldnt be so hard.Just get the fastest guys you can find and line em up.

Now again I think May was pretty good with what little he played but I will tell you now he didnt play in front of Lawrence last year,he wont play in front of him next year.IMHO from all Ive heard and I beleive it Whaley will play ahead of both of them next year and be a starter. In fact when Glenn was suspended it was stated that Whaley had become our best LB by some in the know.Mays PT last year was because of injuries and Redshirting of guys like Fisher,Compton, and Whaley. Now if these guys stay healthy Im almost sure they will ALL be on the 2 deep.Throw in Dillard and Lawrence and their is 5 of 6.That leaves one spot and a goup of about 4-5 fighting for it PROVIDING incoming recruits Williams and Martin Rs(Martin wants to play though so we shall see).Anyways that leaves Stafford,May,Holt,L.Washington(if he doesnt move to RE),Williams, and Martin.Of all those guys it looks like 1 might make the 2 deep.Im guessing Holt but its still up in the air.I still think STs is where these guys will call home and make their mark o the program.

Dont want to discourage guys because we all like to hear the walk on to NFL feel good stories. They do happen sometimes but in most cases these guys are walk ons for a reason.

  13. Potential heresy alert: I would really question Bo's judgment if he offered this kid a scholarship.

    1. The kid will only have two years of eligibility so it make no sense to waste a scholarship on a kid who will sit on the bench for two years.

1.How do we know he would sit the bench. He would be on campus an entire year before having to take a snap.Thats longer than Zak Taylor and he was pretty good as a QB here.We cant assume he will sit the bench. Its possible BUT its just as possible that he comes in and starts over everyone else...remember Beck/Taylor?

    2. Even with Witt transferring out the Huskers still have: Lee, Green, Spano and possibly Martinez at QB.

Witt,Lee,Green,Martinez...which has proven himself as a solid starter?Neither and thats my point. If Lee was a proven identity Id say no TY but the thought of having a trues freshman or a RS freshman taking meaningful snaps scares me.At least Marve has faced live bullets. While his results have been mixed he HAS been there. With that OFFENSIVE offense that Miami runs I see why he had trouble though. Its a proven fact other than ND nobody does less with more talent than Miami. This is a win/win for us.If the guy is really good he can take over and play.If hes solid he can be a experienced back up.If he sucks he only cost us a ship for a short term.If hes a troublemaker and cant follow rules we give him the boot and he costs us nothing.IMHO this is a risk.reward type situation and on the surface it looks like the risk would be worth the reward.

BTW Did I mention this guy was Mr.Florida in the state his senior year. How bad can he be?

    :box

  15. What will this kids role be? He is a sprinting champion from high school, yet coaches thought he was big enough and violent enough to play linebacker during this last season. Word is that he one of the strongest pound for pound guys on the team.

Will we see him at LB again next year, and if so, will he see the field? maybe an awesome safety with that speed and strength since I see that as more of a need than LB on the depth chart?

This is one kid i think is going to make a huge impact before his time is done. He is one of the few freshman to see the field last year, and it wasn't on special teams.

I predict he will start on defense some time before his senior year.

With the influx of talent at the LB spot from the RS class and this past class I doubt that May starts as a LB at NU.I do however expect him to play a huge role as a special teams guy over the next 3 years.Guys like him and Holt and Thorrell were decent stop gap guys who got quality pt because the coaches decided to RS the majority of their incoming freshman. With those guys playing now Im not sure you will ever see them start at anything other than special teams. One guy mentioned special packages on defense which is possible but thats about it imo.

These guys are solid walk on types who could fill in during the pinch but I think thats about as much as I would expext from them. When you add guys like Fisher,Compton,Whaley,Williams, and Martin at LB.As well as guys like Osborne,Smith,Green,Washington,Middleton,Martinez and Dennard(even though he played last year),and Gomes at DB Id say it will be hard for those guys to ever start at NU.That doesnt mean its not possible but I think injuries would have to pile up at some positions for these guys to ever START at NU.

Id be completely satisfied if guys like may Holt and Thorrel became mainstays on special teams. They obviously have the heart as well as the size, speed and work ethic to help the team in that capacity. These guys could be very valuable members of the team if THAT became their main jobs.Think about how guys like Thenarse,Rigoni and an old name like Lance "bullethead" Gray were factors on special teams. If these guys could become THOSE types of special teams players Id be thrilled. You have to take pride in it and approach with intensity and aggressiveness.THATs what made those other guys great Special teams players. After next year Ricky Thenarse will be gone and we could use some guys to take those type roles.Especially guys who may not become starters.Id love to see Mason Wald in this same capacity as well as Ricky for this last year.

  16. I personaly did not expect Witt to start, but I'm a little disapointed to see him go. If for no other reason than the added competition his skill set would have provided in the spring.

As for Witt sabotaging Green with false signals, I have a hard time buying this. Their in the middle of winter conditioning. All the QB drills would be informal at this point. Could it be true, sure. But the skeptic in me really doubts this story. <_<

One thing I'm not suprised about is the inevitable "now Green has an even better chance to start" posts. So let me be the first to say, NO Green is no closer to starting now than he was last week. He is not going to magicaly learn the playbook over night. And his throwing mechanics aren't going to turn into Peyton Manning's either. It's good that the fan base is excited about Green. But we all need to temper our expectations a bit. (or ALOT in some cases!) He has a lot of work ahead of him.

To me the most intriging angle in all this may be the opprotunity that Taylor Martinez has to get in the QB mix. Granted he still has a hell of a hill to climb with Green, and his fall enrollment. But if Taylor really wants to play QB, this maybe exactly what he needed to get his foot in the door.

Well I hate to do this but I must. You state in one sentence that we should all temper our expectations about Cody Green. That I can agree on.

You then say he has no better chance at starting now than he did last week. That is flat out NOT TRUE.Regardless of what you say or think if its 1 less person to compete against then EVERYONES chances improve.

Then you say Green isnt going to magically learn the playbook and his mechanice wont turn into Peyton mannings either.BUT turn right around and say you are intriqued by Martinez getting his shot in the QB mix...Now heres my problem.Have you seen Martinez's mechanincs? He makes Green LOOK LIKE Manning. He has terrible mechanics.Next Green will have sooo uch trouble learning the playbook? So I gues the same doesnt apply to Martinez huh? Finally you say this was just what Martinez needed to get his foot in the door BUT...Green has no better chance at starting than before? How can that be?You cany have it both ways dude.It helps martinez chances but Greens stays the same?Thats what you are saying.

Now I dont know if this was done on purpose or not but you show a huge bias against green for whatever reason.Like I said I hated to say this but go back and read your post again and see how someone could come to the conclusion I did.

  17. There is a log jam and if he's the least mobile then why sit if you can go somewhere else and play that will suit your ability.

Common sense tells me if Witt thought he had a good shot at starting next year there is no way he would leave.Maybe if after the spring game and he was behind then I can see it but now?I think either Wats have let him know which direction the offense is going and he doesnt feel he fits it IMO.I just dont see the returning frontrunner (SUPPOSEDLY)leaving before ever competing for the number 1 job.I have to trust we are moving away from the less mobile type guys and more and more toward the zone read guy with abilities to beat you both ways.I still think when Wats leaves in a couple years you will see a Florida type offense.

  18. I'm not gonna lie; this past season I remember yelling at the top of my lungs at halftime, "THIS IS F*CKING BAYLOR!!! WTF!!!"

I got drunk watching that game...seemed like I couldn't put the beer down because I was a little nervous. I do think they will be better this year, but so will we so no worries! lol

Bo DID do a good job of halftime adjustments to stop Baylor in the second half BUT I have to be honest here. That Baylor team was faster and more athletic than our team...at least on offense anyways. Now dont get me wrong I think our defense is where we EVENTUALLY will win that game but Baylor has some horses on offense .If Griffith is an accurate passer they will be hard to stop.I think we win but closer than most think.31ish to 24ish.

  19. We should be adequate at WR next year. Kinnie should add immediate depth, but we'll need the core group of Gilleylan, Holt, and Paul to really step up.

As for this year's recruiting class, don't count out a couple of speedy slot type walk-ons in Kildow and Failla. They may be small and coming off of injuries, but they were two of the most explosive players in the state their junior years.

unfortunately being the most explosive players in the state of nebraska doesnt make these guys anything more than what they are...walkons.I have nothing against them but I will not count on walk ons to be our explosive athletes.Anything these guys do will be EXTRA.We had better start recruiting some smaller speedier guys at WR or our offense will always be somewhat handcuffed.Im not even sure if the guys have to be big time 4 an5 star type guys but they must be fast and able toget YAC.Deep threats are needed in the worst way and as of right now we have none.

  20. I'm bored, still snowed in and have nothing better to do, so I'll give you my opinion.

Granted this is where I think they will be in August, not in the spring. In the spring I don't know how much movement you will see with guys trying to acclimated to new positions and so many guys going from scout to playing with the big boys. Hoping a few step up and standout, but guessing that is like throwing darts in the dark.

another tough one but I agree with Reed.Since we missed on a DE this year besides Ankrah I was hoping Fisher would move down to DE anyway. He could hold 250 pounds ez on his frame. Then RS L.Washington and move him to DE as well..that would be depth along with Yancy.jmo.

    -----------------------

Probably need to explain a few of these --

Can we not just combine the physical traits of Lee with the mind of Witt and get a Big 12 OPOY type candidate?

No use in naming a starter between Helu and Castille. Both are gonna get starter like carries. If I had to pick one though, it would be Helu.

Do not have a FB because I want the coaching staff to prove to me that they will actually use one legitimately.

I'm still skeptical anyone will step up at WR and overtake the guys in front. Khiry could do it, but he's missing time. Steven Osborne is another.

It's Mike McNeill, Ben Cotton and then everyone else at TE.

DJ Jones needs to step up big, otherwise our depth at guard will be scary.VERY TRUE but I think KSU transfer Meyer may play some gaurd

The battle between Baker and Crick may be the most interesting battle once the summer starts. Baker may still not be completely physically ready yet in the spring. But by the summer, watch out.

Other than QB Crick vs Baker is battle of the camp...I agree Crick comes out on top

BUCK will also be interesting. Kyler can be a terror and Fisher can be good as well. Having a fear that Fisher may get to big and too stiff for LB.

Yup,hoping Fisher moves down to DE

Hagg is gonna be the nickel corner. Would almost prefer that either he or West move to FS. Think they both are better suited there, Hagg especially. Hagg could likely push Thenarse for the top job if it happened.

Hoping Dennard gets he deserved chance to shine.

Sorry O'Hanlon. Too many blown coverages last year on your part and the lack of physical abilities will probably push you down a spot on the DC.

I agree but I think Hagg is TOO valuable as a nickel to move him now.He knows all the defenses and doesnt have to relearn the spot. That NB is as important as any on the D and Hagg has it down.Id leave him where hes at.

No to Henery pulling double duty. Dead leg is bound to happen if we let him do it.

Mangieri is a very, very good LS.

Need to get Marlowe's speed on the field. Could be a good slot guy this year as well. Prince just needs the ball in his hands, period.

Thats about it . for me.

  21. I've read a lot of debating about the NU-KU game deciding the North next season. For the most part I agree with that sentiment. I think Mizzou is going to take a major step backwards, and Colorado has to prove they can beat a decent team on the road. The Hawks or Huskers will most certainly be preseason 1 and 2 next Summer. That makes the NU-KU game in Lawrence the possible North Title game.

Living down here in the Kansas City area, I know a lot of KU fans. Nearly everyone of them think KU will beat NU simply because the Huskers are breaking in a new QB. That thought seems to be prevailing on this board as well. A lot of KU fans are making that argument. Wishfull thinking is fun. They could be right. Nobody really knows how well the Husker offense will perform next season.

However, anyone who honestly thinks that's the case needs to one important thing into perspective:

NU and KU play in mid-November. If Nebraska's QB situation isn't settled by then it's unlikely the Huskers will still be in contention for the North.

If the winner of that game does indeed decide the North, then that's good news for the Huskers. Huh, how do you figure? Please allow me to elaborate.

Right now KU has 3 distinct strengths going into that game:

    1. Memorial Stadium in Lawrence is now a very tough place to play. The crowds there are great, and there is enough electricity there to fuel momentum.

    Agreed.

    2. Todd Reesing is a man in an 8th grader's body. The kid is a stud. I actually have a man-crush on him, but I'm not a pedophile..... or gay for that matter.

    agreed.

    3. Desmond Briscoe will be the best offensive player on the field for either team. He's a difference maker and in a close game, he can change the outcome.

Not sure if hes the best but hes definitely a differencemaker.Personally I like Roy Helu and Reesing as the best. Why because Briscoe as all WRs are at the mercy of there QBs.If we get to Reesing itll be harder for Briscoe to be effective.Reesing and Helu can touch it every play if needed. Not sure Brisco can.but I agreed he is a game changer and must be accounted for

Here's where Nebraska could really hurt the HAWKS:

KU's offensive line was dominated by NU's interior D-Line last season. All indications show that should continue. Even guys like Crick and Moore had their way with the KU o-line. That o-line will have 3 new interior starters. Experience won't be an issue by mid-November. That's foolish to suggest. But it's also foolish to suggest those guys will be able to perform at higher level than the previous KU seniors did against Suh and company. Oh, btw, how good will Suh be by November '09?

    - NU will easily control the line of scrimmage, and Reesing will be running for his life again. Expect Allen and Turner to dominate the KU tackles again as well.

    agreed.

KU had no running game against NU this past season. In fact, by the last half of the season, nobody ran on NU, including Clemson's 250 rushing yards a game attack with two NFL running backs. The KU and Clemson running games are completely different, so that doesn't mean much.

agreed but clemsons QB sucked hog ballz .As you said Reesing is a beastBUT our defense will be MUCH improved ALL over

However, results do matter. Will KU try to revamp their running game this off-season? Sure they will, but with a new o-line and the same scheme it's unlikely they will run the football against the Huskers. NU will control the line of scrimmage, and the added speed and depth dimension in the linebacking corps lends more weight to the no KU running game argument.

I still think they struggle to run on us.

NU's secondary has nothing but experience and more depth returning. It will be tested by the KU receiving corp. Meier, Briscoe, and Reesing are scary. However, with no running game and very little pass protection, it will be tough for KU to execute the passing game.

    agreed

So in a nutshell, NU will won KU next season. I tend to agree as well but reserve the right to change my mind depending on how our QB play is which I expect it to be solid.

  22. Kinda like Niles Paul. Oh well, if the kid can contribute and the coaches and the player agree, then let him play. It's a judgement call on behalf of the coaches. Pelini was saved by the fact Meredith and Fisher were hurt and are able to get medicals.

Meredith and Fisher were...to quote Jim Rome "allegedly" hurt and are able to get medicals :LOLtartar

  23. Rock Chalk, I bet KU wins in a close one. We really need to beat Tech, becasue I think we lose to OU at home and @ Texas. Ironically, we could win this game and have too many losses to take the North. I think we get it though, I think NU is good, not great next year.

SWimple one for me...the team with the better OL/DL will win this game. Its the same reason we beat KU this past year and imo its why we will beat them this year. The DL/OL stength can hide many deficiencies in offenses OR defenses UNTIL they get up to par elsewhere. Our DL hid our weaknesses at DB and LB for the most part UNTIL our guys "kinda" got better.I think this year our DL/LB/DBs will all be improved as will our OL thus giving our less experienced spots...WR and QB a chance to grow into their own.Our RB and TE will allow us time for our WRs and Bs to get better .Thus my opinion that we win because OL/DL.
