  1. I want to see:

the evolution of the passing game. Our passing game was laughable last year, and supposedly we're going to make big strides this year. I want to see receivers getting open and catching the ball.

the skill position freshman at work - Heard, Abdullah, Turner, Green, or whatever combination they don't decide to redshirt.

a comfortable, poised, and uninjured Martinez. I want to see that he can throw it away when it's not there, that he can run out of bounds instead of take a linebacker head on, that he doesn't have to make spectacular, hero moves if the play breaks down.

O-line consistency - no sacks, limited penalties.

    No turnovers.

And overall, a coherent, fast-paced, clear offensive vision. I want to see the aggression, the upscale tempo, and the simplicity we've been hearing about for months.

I'm not too worried about the defense.

  2. I would LOVE if ND joined the conference. Love them or hate them, they are a juggernaut in terms of marketing and money. They open up the NYC market. They are a marquee name. Anyone playing them gets national exposure. The list goes on.

  3. Possible teams for Big 10 expansion: Missouri, Pitt, Notre Dame (I REALLY hope we get this one if the SEC picks up OU and aTm, not to mention probably Clemson), and possibly VT or WVU. I'd prefer all these teams over Syracuse, Rutgers, etc.

  4. Pitt is a decent pickup for the big 10, Notre Dame would be the best pickup of any team in the country except Texas (in terms of money/market). Any chance we'd pick up Virginia Tech, or would they be more of an SEC team? West Virginia? Missouri is a decent pickup as well.

  5. I hope we get this guy just so we can call him the "Shelby Sensation." And then, every time he tackles someone, he can yell "You're f'ing' out!"

Well for starters I found out they call him 'Jon Jon' in his neck of the woods.

I take it you're not an Eastbound and Down fan...

  6. Does anyone think this may be because Brion Carnes has moved to number 2 in the depth chart? Cody had to know he'd ride behind Martinez coming into this season, seems to me like this might be because he got moved back another spot. Best of luck to him, I really respected his attitude and effort no matter how it paid off. Good luck.

  7. I'd much rather we utilize the talent we have in whatever way we can. If he doesn't work out, then he doesn't work out, but it's better than letting athletic talent rot on the sidelines. I really like what I am hearing about Beck so far, and I'm glad the guy is experimenting with different things and attempting to get playmakers on the field.

  8. I wonder if a possible reason for Brown to coach RBs is his recruiting ability. We won't be getting many high profile receivers no matter how good he is, because of the type of QBs we have and the offense we run. But since we are moving toward a run-heavy system, why not get a guy who recruits well and coaches well at that position?

  9. The Rivers School played Pingree in the Norm Walker Bowl yesterday at Gillette Stadium. But this isn’t about that football game. This is about how the boys at Rivers got to that game, and how on the way they learned as much about life as they did about football. Rivers has never been considered a football power in the Independent School League, which consists of some of the most elite prep schools in New England.

But last year, they hired a young coach named Rich Fisher, who brought in a sophisticated system that challenged his players as much cerebrally as it did athletically. The Rivers playbook is as thick as “War and Peace.’’ It has 62 plays and 45 formations and motions.

  10. In “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” Robert Redford and Paul Newman, playing the titular characters, peered down into the canyon to watch the superposse – yes, precisely that - on their tail. They couldn't exactly make them out, although they sure as hell wanted to. Who are those guys?

It's not quite that dramatic for Nebraska media and fans as we await the official announcement of Bo Pelini's revamped coaching staff. Half of it, after all, didn't change.

But half of it did, and let's face it: Who are these guys?

  11. While I'll admit these hires don't have the "wow" factor, I've seen enough of Bo's genius on the defensive side of the ball with "no-name" position coaches to trust him in hiring the right people to fix the offense. Our offensive problems the past two years are not Bo's fault (other than failing to address the problem, which he has now done) and I trust his ability to coach and to turn a football team around. Given the miracle he worked on defense in only one year, I'm taking the wait-and-see approach on these offensive hirings. He isn't stupid, and while we might not be able to pull the hottest assistants from other schools, we could surely hire someone with a more impressive history than Fisher, for instance. This tells me that Bo believes these guys are the best for the job.
