Thanks BRB. I have received a lot of info from UNL. Sometimes people who have been through it on this side have more practical info that's all I was hoping for.

I am close to making a decision to start an online MBA through UNL but I have some questions that I was hoping someone on the board could answer. I am looking for more of the logistics of doing the program. If I decide to start the program at least the beginning will be while I am in South Africa - I could end up in another overseas location or back in the States.

Are most of the "lectures" available to download and listen/watch later? Internet and power reliability are terrible here so I really can't expect to be able to stream data on demand. My hope is to utilize my 2 hours of daily commute to listen to the lectures. I know I may have to go back and listen to specific parts but I could at least get the gist of the lecture through my ride.

How much time is spent each week per class? With 2 hours of driving, 10 hour days, family, etc I don't have a ton of time free. I'm willing to sacrifice and I know there will never be a "good" time.

Being in ZA there there is a 7-8 hour time difference from Lincoln depending on the time of year. Are there any "required" live events that I would need to log into at odd hours of the night? I'm not opposed to this, hell I am used to waking up for Husker and Royals games but I usually try to push those to weekends.

If anyone else has general advice I am all ears. Thanks for the assistance.

Apparent Dirk hasn't had enough bad things to write about lately (/sarcasm) but this is an article he filed today. Not to trample on a man's grave (so to speak) but kinds of sheds lite on how Frank was recruiting and what direction we were headed.

 

You cant evaluate recruiting classes by results only. A recruiting class becomes great largely because of the instruction it receives. Clearly Nebraskas player development machine had dipped in the early 00s. And clearly it didnt help the class of 2000 when Bill Callahan overhauled the system before their redshirt senior seasons.

 

But heres the bottom line: Not one player from the class of 2000 earned first-team all-conference honors. Thats unprecedented in Husker history. Only T.J. Hollowell played in the NFL.

Richie was a friend of mine back in the day. Great physical specimen but you could tell it wasn't going to end well at NU for him. He seemed to lose his fire for football during his junior year of high school. There were also other issues. From what I hear many in the class were similar in that they peaked early and got offers based on hype. They also didn't have the benefit of great leaders beating them into shape.

Bush isn't going to TE. With Cethan and Snyder we will have enough productivity from TE. Assuming Cotton stays we will have a great blocker too. TE is about 5th on my concerns lists. 1. QB 2. OT 3. RB 4. WR 5. TE 6. C 7. OG.

I struggle to understand why people are so worried about our recruiting class ranking. When you look over the losses Bo had its hard to find too many that we were out classed in talent. As weird as that was to type after 40+ point losses its true. Most of the big losses came from scheme issues or not playing the most talented player. Look at Wisconsin this past year. Plenty of teams with far less talent than us contained their running game better than we did. We, for whatever reason, decided to protect against Wisky airing it out on us while Gordon ran by us time after time.

Riley also had a good track record of beating highly ranked teams. For whatever reason that was a major issue with Bo. Let's let him get his people in place and let them coach up the talent we already have.

If he wants it he could be here for 10+ years. If he is really successful (conf titles BCS wins) I see him doing that. If not then likely 5-8 and hang it up.

A few points here....

Chip Brown isn't a complete liar. He is just a mouthpiece for UT. So this could easily be something UT wants to get out to tarnish A&M or something that is actually true.

The other is the SEC does not play anyone outside of the southeast in the non-conference. They will play neutral site games in Dallas or Atlanta sometimes. Even other Power 5 teams in a home and home series as long as they are from the southeast (ACC usually is the benefactor). So this seems totally believable. The SEC is like most "tyrants". They are completely insecure. They want to think they are the best in the world but they are not willing to put that to the test because they might find out they aren't (as we have found out the last few days).

Almost all offenses that are successful are "option" of sorts. The zone read and most spread offenses focus on one player that they leave unblocked to make an option of.

What NU ran most of the Beck era was option and I never heard many people wanting to implement that across the nation. Hell even iso football utilizes some option with WR motion and end arounds off of it at times.

Ultimately there are countless offenses that will work, including Riley's style, it just depends on what the coach likes most and what talent he can get to support it.

When Ole Miss scheduled Boise State, at the time, here were their previous 3 seasons:

So Ole Miss wasn't shying away from competition. Sagarin puts Boise State at #40, which is going to be a better win than a lot of the Power 5 teams. But I digress, I'll let you continue.

And 12 of those 13-14 games each year were against mighty Utah State and similar ilk. Bosie has long lived off of playing 1-2 teams each year. One reason I wasn't too high on Peterson for replacing Bo last year.

Let's see how jimbo does without winston. My guess is he is on the hot seat in about 5 years. Being in a terrible ACC helps

Reminds me of the stories from Urban in Florida. Star players were able to get away with murder (as in the saying, not like Aaron Hernandez). By the time Urban left there was near mutiny.

Jimbo will likely go down in similar fashion but will be regarded as a "great coach" because he has a championship.

One of the biggest problems I always had with Bo and his recruiting was how he seemed to stack certain positions while trying to go bare bones on others. At different times in the past seven years, we used a lot of scholarships on just QBs and RBs while pretty much neglecting OL and other positions.

My complaint as well.

Bo also seemed to honor his word too much. Take this year with Bussey. He honored his word with him even though he was taking trip after trip. It isn't even sure the Bussey would have stayed if Bo was still coaching. A real head coach will understand that they need to look out for the team. Who cares if someone else wants to be the "only" at whatever position. Tell them frankly and honestly that you will continue to recruit others because it is a position of need and you need as much talent as you can get. If a player doesn't want to compete against other players that should be a huge red flag about his make-up.

You Don't need scott frost. It's about the speed for Oregon.

 

Two schools in the country understand that speed is king (not size) Oregon and tcu. At one point one dr. Tom had the same realization.

You must be right, only 2 schools understand that speed is king. Surely Florida State, Bama, Auburn, Ohio State, Baylor, and several others have never thought of that.

What used to separate the SEC was the speed AND size of their Dline. Now that isn't the case. Everyone is getting bigger and faster DTs and DEs. Also the spread offense has broken the SEC defensive puzzle.

But speed ALONE is not a high priority for the superiority of Oregon. Talent, football sense, size combined with speed or speed combine with size, etc etc etc.

 

Riley and his staff need to get out there when recruiting opens up again and hit it hard over the next month. We need to win some recruiting battles if we hope to be competitive with the big boys.

Because with (what we are now finding out was) the worst coaching mentality in history we were 5 points away from beating MSU, at their crib at night. And we beat UM in their crib last year.

We have the talent. We just need the coaching to get us over the hump.

One plus side down the road is that it appears that Mike Riley is a better recruiter than Bo dreamed of.

 

 

 

 

I agree you run into Big Red fans all over the U.S. Great fan base!!! I do disagree with all the positive sunshine. It's too bad you've all put your faith in a lawyer who is the A.D. Coach Riley is a nice man. You can believe all you want, but I've watched his beavers play for several years. Lot's of penalties, breakdown in defense. This years squad had 9 seniors returning on defense. Take a look at where they finished on a national level on defense. Pathetic!!! Banker isn't the solution. I will give the Husker fan base props for always believing the future glory days are coming back. i just don't see it happening with a long term

The new Oregon State coach will win at OSU. Just stop getting your hopes all up about turning the progr around. We just fired a coach with 7 seasons of 9 wins and a high graduation rate. Bo didn't have his hand in the O as much but as we know he liked to force play calls (like the pass on 2nd and 1 vs Minn) or dictate starters (Taylor, M Pelini, et al).

 

Let's give Riley a chance... he already has more wins vs. top 10 opponents than NU does in this millenium. But save your remarks about how you can't recruit at Nebraska... blah blah.

Really, that's hard to argue? You know nothing about how these new coaches will perform. Won't you be ripping into them if we lose to BYU?

Banker vs Pap/Bo

Bray vs Els

Warren vs Warren (plus a year experience and no micromanagement. )

Cavanaugh vs Garrison or Barney (with Bo meddling with starters)

Read vs Els (special teams)

It seems that Riley's staff is both more experienced and organized better than Bo's was.

From what I have seen the only place we won't be better is at RB coach. But that's thr least important position (RBs either have talent or they don't for the most part) on the staff and should be a great recruiter. Brown didn't put as much into recruiting as he used to.

All that being said coaching improvements alone may not have measurable results. If we lose to BYU then I will place blame where it is deserved.

Good read... but take it with a HUGE grain of salt. Can't tell you how many times we hear big names from scout team. Sometimes they pan out and sometimes they don't. It would be great is Foster materializes. The O line seems to be one place that we have never been able to amass 5 above average starters and keep them healthy.

People can't really just absolve Papuchis of responsibility can they? It seems silly. Yes, this was Bo's scheme. Yes, Bo called the plays defensively. Still, Papuchis has been a part of this thing for years. With the title of DC, I would expect he was doing a lot of assisting with all of these things.

 

Are you really serious? Have you ever worked for a bad manager that is a control freak? Pap was/is very new to the business and Bo is about the only name on his resume. So being defiant and trying to force things that he wanted would have only put him on the unemployment line.

Let's just wait for Saturday with an open mind. There are two potential outcomes for this game for NU... either they play lifeless and get blown out worse than Wisconsin OR they play with renewed passion and they play an inspired game. I'm betting the former but maybe Bo was really holding the coaches and players back by his poor managerial skills.

It's hard not to get excited about his staff. They seem to be above average in recruiting (not quite Callahan-esq) and have a track record of developing talent. I'm not sure we have had that combination since TO.

Honestly I don't even have to wait a year for the results, I know this staff will bring in better talent for their system than the last staff. I don't know how many stories I have heard about people sending in videos or letting the last staff know highly ranked players were interested but not even a call. It was like the last staff too offense to people providing videos like "they knew more than the staff". When Daishon Neal was rumored to want to visit Oregon, the new staff called him within hours. The last staff exemplified the persona of Nebraska. Out of date, afraid of the big cities, only wanting people that want to be here. The new staff already understands you have to sell kids on everything. Most of the last staff had to recruit against Oregon being only 40 miles away. They now move to Nebraska where they don't really have an equal (in terms of tradition, fan support, recent record, etc) within 250 miles (and possibly 500 - I need to see where that puts us compared to Oklahoma).

My best friend played and roomed with Mark at SIU. Went out with Mark a few times. He taught me how to bite the top of a beer can off. Also witnessed him order (and eat) 16 mc chicken sandwiches after a night of drinking.

 

On a side note, he promised me a corvette if he made the pros... Wonder if this counts?

I reread my post and realized it may come off like Mark isn't professional. 1. My stories of him are from college. 2. Kid was loyal as hell. He picked me out of a crowd the second time I was there and we picked up like I never left. His mentality was he sold out for his teammates. Since I was my friends former teammate he sold out for me too. 3. Heart of a champion.

The only thing that kept him at 1aa was his height. His brothers had 3-4" on him and played Pac 12 ball.

It's really hard to see a scenario that we are competitive let alone have the upper hand in the game.

But sometimes playing loose after a playing for a control freak will let the players find new abilities.

Let's remember Josh is what 22? He spent the last 5 years with someone who told him everyone else was against him. I bet he is skeptical and hurt. Kids today voice their internal thoughts on social media. That's what happened here and I'm fine with that. Whether NU's PR team initiated the apology or Josh did, Josh still posted it on twitter. That's evidence of a big step in a young adults life. Let's step back and acknowledge a player who bleeds scarlet and cream who is growing as a person.

Wasn't Brown wanting to retire last year and TO talked him into staying to help Bo? I bet Brown is done to work on his foundation. Warren has shown great recruiting ties to the south and solid coaching experience. He also only had one year with Bo and wasn't a "Bo guy" so I wouldn't worry about him poisoning the team.

Most importantly let MR hire who he wants. No TO forcing Shawn Watson and Ted Gilmore or Steve Pedersen forcing Brown on a coach. If he wants Frost or Ogeron or Muschamp or Pelini fine. If he wants some high school coach from Idaho that's cool too. He has shown he isn't afraid to hire smart coaches who challenge his thoughts which is an upgrade (if only in that area) than the last administration.

Football scoop and others rely on firms to leak info. SE isn't into publicity for no reason. He sees no value in rumors of every turn in a search getting out. He wanted to pick his guy because he knew his job relies on it. Since he was the only on (or one of the few) that knew then the media types had nothing to gossip about.

Then enter Bert. He saw an opportunity for more money. Knew Arkansas didn't want to go through another search so he had them by the balls. Good way to make an extra million or two. In the he said he said game of coaching offers Arkansas couldn't afford to search again.
