  1. We would have steamrolled Michigan back in 97'. However, let's not forget why there was a split title. The title was ours until we travelled to Columbia, MO. This game even though we won in OT dropped us from #1 to #3. Then a couple weeks later, we barely squeaked out a three point victory against unranked non-bowl eligible CU.

While most of us can agree we would have rolled Michigan back then, we were extremely lucky to get a share of the title. I'm guessing the only reason we received a share was because of TO's announcing his retirement and the lobbying by Scott Frost.

Don't forget Jason Peter's challenge for Michigan to play Nebraska at his home in NJ. I think he even gave the address.

  2.

    OK

Hypothetically, You are the AD. Dr. Evil has just kidnapped your chick and you have ONE year to win the NC. Which of the four do you hire Right Now.

That's a good way of putting the question.

I'd probably take Riley in that situation. Although it was with the Canadian Football League, he's at least won a championship as a head coach, something none of the other three have done.

I believe Solich was a few fumbles away from a NC in 99.

  3. I honestly dont see this happening next year. Man it felt good watching that game against ucla. I just think that these guys are way to stuck in their way to change philosophy next season. Recruiting a pocket passer qb also tells me that a strong running game isn't in the cards next year. We will talk about the bowl game all offseason and then when week 5 rolls around we're all guna be like "what the f**k? Why are we throwing it 65% of th e time?"

I really hope im wrong. But I think langsdorf gets goose bumps watching a strong passing attack--the way most husker fans feel watching a power running game. I think in his mind, he wants to show Nebraska fans how it can work and be all great and everything. But the truth is we don't want to watch Usc/Oregon/ucla hiding in Nebraska uniforms. We want NEBRASKA to play in Nebraska uniforms. Blue collar football that we can be Damn proud of. You know, the way we all felt after the foster farms bowl

I for one don't care how we get our yards/scores. UCLA was the perfect opponent to execute a run first mentality. Due to injury and other reasons, they were horrible at defending the run. If our recruits are better suited to the pass, then we should focus on that. If TA is our QB next year, we have to be a run first offense or we will once again take him out of his comfort zone and set him up for disaster. Having said all of this, I think in the long run we can get more (and better) recruits that fit a power run system than a west coast variant.

  4.

    So.... Who picked UCLA?

    SxutOh.jpg

Since I started doing this, this is the most lopsided set of picks against Nebraska that I can recall.

Not to be negative but why would anyone in their right mind pick Nebraska? Or even UCLA by less than a couple touchdowns. I hope we do well but hope isn't worth much these days. All indications are that it should be an ugly lopsided victory for the Bruins......unless they just aren't motivated to be there.

I completely agree and was of the same opinion in the Michigan State game. I didn't think we had a prayer. Beating UCLA would not surprise me. On the other hand, losing the game wouldn't surprise me either.

You don't think "hating Frank & Bo and Loving Callahan" is a bit too strong for pretty much anyone in this spirited conversation?

    No.

    But you're free to disagree.

I cant recall more than one person liking Bill Callahan more than Frank Solich.

Go to bigredboard. Luckily, the Internet figured out a way to quarantine them.

Bigredboard doesn't accept new members and hasn't since they purged anyone who didn't hate Tom Osborne and refused to toe the line. That's been years now. There is very little a guest can view, almost all of their posts are hidden from the public. They have at least 3 layers of hidden forums and that's only counting if you are a member. (lol)

All of your "bigredboard" comparisons are pretty silly, probably time to drop it.

Do you know what quarantine means? You must, cuz you just described it.

If you do indeed know what a quarantine is, why do you insist on people going to bigredboard?

I didn't mean for him to join. I meant that is where he could go to find the people that he thought were so scarce.

You can't even do that, it's all hidden from view unless you are a member.

    sigh.

It was more of a figurative comment to say "Here's where they are."

As to viewing if you're not a member, there are other ways.

So basically, you are only telling people that to be a jerk?

No. Did you follow the conversation at all? Your earlier confusion about what I said led to this whole derailment.

He said he only knew of one person that hated Frank and loved Bill. I pointed him to a whole board full of them.

Brings back nightmares of people who created stupid red jet fighter JPGs depicting our new air attack on HP back when Callahan was hired...

how do we even know if Frost wants to coach here? he is just another young coach in his first gig.....wish him luck.

Because he was interested in doing it in the past... It's his home state and alma mater, who wouldn't want to come home to a blue blood?

He may still remember the boos from the student section?

i suspect opportunity will always trump going home.........unless there is an attractive, compelling rational.

I almost forgot...the team we were playing when the idiot students were booing Frost...Central Florida!

  7. If he still has speech issues from prior concussions, it sounds like he is not fully healed. As much as we want him to play (he looked great in the SG), we don't want him to get re-injured. Hopefully this kid heals 100% first, then maybe we can think about him in a real game. As far as the scholarship...I'd rather honor his spot even though it may hurt us. It's the Nebraska way.

Solich was fired to prevent being mediocre. We have had 12 consecutive seasons that were not as good as 2003. When do you think the Huskers will have a season as good or better than 2003?

Sorry to tell you, but Solich had already achieved mediocrity. Pederson tried to reverse that but he could not.

Solich was making moves to correct things. Remember he actually fired the DC & pulled in Pelini to be the DC in 2003. Solich was in the NC game in 2001. Yes, Miami kicked the crap out of NU that year, but this was a '01 Canes team that most consider a top 5 all-time team. Most on this board would put them only behind the '95 & '71 Husker teams.

IMO Perlman & Pederson were the direct downfall to NU football. They listened to the talking heads & made the decison that ended the offensive identity to NU football & it has never recovered.

    ^This times 1 million.

Agree. Firing Solich was the biggest mistake ever made in college football.

And yet he had trouble finding a job until a MAC school took a chance on him. Guess all those P5 AD's were fools.

My memory may be a bit foggy, but I remember several colleges who had interest in Solich who were higher profile than Ohio. Just about every writer and pundit was left scratching their head after the firing...

Army was the only one I remember, not a P5 school though, only the uninformed were left scratching

Your post does make it sound like Ohio was his only choice which is not accurate... What informed coaches, pundits and writers thought it was a good move?

  10.

Men and boys have had to deal with concussions since before homo was sapiens. Wrestling with your brother, getting knocked off the equipment at recess. Falling off horses. It happens. Men are still well adjusted and productive. Youth football is not as dangerous as the new docs would have you believe. Most kids go clear through the programs without ever having a concussion.

These are not a bunch of Jr. Seau's; God bless him.

Change the game without ruining it. From my perspective, its nearly ruined already with the current changes. Too much replay and plays are still getting called wrong. No real tough safety play. No hitting the quarterback. Lately someone here posted a game of the 92 Huskers. Go watch that game and then tell me that is not a better version of the game. Players playing more naturally, flying to the ball. Safeties going hard to the play.

You know back before so much agonizing replay, you got some calls, and some went against you, it evens out. The quality of officiating was just better when big brother was not watching over the shoulder. And this catch is not a catch business... Bizarro world. Welcome to 2015 McFly!

This is exactly the problem. That style of play is incredibly unsafe.

It's no use arguing about the impact of concussions, I'm not going to change any minds. Football is by far the most exciting sport in the world, and if you want it to continue you'd better get on board with keeping the players safe. That includes calling a penalty for a hit above the shoulders even if unintentional, calling a foul for hitting a defenseless player, etc.

That play Gerry got ejected for against Iowa? Properly called. Need to discourage players from doing that. What else could he have done on that play? Absolutely nothing. Give up the play and move on. Football has moved towards that and it SHOULD continue to move towards that. Keep the game as safe as possible even if you perceive it to be 'watered' down.

What Gerry did was not even remotely Chuck Cecil like... So how do you discourage people from doing something that could not have been prevented? You go to make plays and get a penalty as well as kicked out of the game...for what? A play where you could do absolutely nothing differently? I suppose he could not tackle ball carriers or just hesitate enough to let ball carriers go down by themselves? The play was not malicious and trying to cause injury. That in my book should not be flagged or cause an ejection.

In 2003, a year the Huskers only lost three games, Steve Pederson fired Frank Solich, and stated that he would not let the huskers slip into mediocrity. Since then, the Huskers have lost more than three games every year. When will the Huskers return to the same level as the year Solich was fired, and when will the Huskers exceed the 2003 season results? I predict three losses for the Huskers in 2019, and less than three losses in 2020. I see the current staff at Nebraska for two additional years, then a new AD finally hires a coach that believes in an attacking D and a strong running game based on homegrown linemen. In 2018, a new staff makes improvements, and in finally returns to a three loss season in 2019. The improvement continues with a single loss season in 2020 which ends with a BCS bowl win.

Wow, sad thing is this took some time to think about. I didnt agree with the Callahan hire, but solich needed to go. So let's get over that 13 year gripe. Second of all, who really gives a rats behind what offense we run. If a coach came in here and threw the ball 70 times and won a national championship or two no one would care we only ran the ball 10 times a game. Who cares, Just win

    Sorry don't agree...

  14.

The Miami-NU game was 33-10 with 11 minutes left in the game. It could have/should have been even more than that but Kaaya threw a boneheaded INT in the end zone at the beginning of the 4th quarter. By all intents and purposes, it was a blowout.

I give credit to NU for playing hard, and making a miraculous comeback to send it to OT. But, it shouldn't have even gotten to OT. Miami's idiocracy, with a coach who would be fired a month later, was the reason NU got back in the game.

    So.....let me get this straight.

If we make mistakes that allows Miami to score 33 points it's because Miami. If we make a come back and score 33 points to tie it, it's simply because Miami made find mistakes and we still suck.

Well ... that's pretty much what a lot of people said about the Michigan State game last year - in reverse of course.

^This. The scoreboard did not reflect it, but we were being blown out in that game...

  15.

There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out in this game.

I think that UCLA will have no problem piling up points against NU's D. I think Rosen picks Banker's D apart. The only way NU keeps it close is if the offense keeps scoring with them, like NU did against Michigan State.
There's no basis for thinking we'll get blown out. Thinking we'll lose, yes.

Right. No basis whatsoever to think the Huskers will get blown out. Just like back in August when there was no basis whatsoever to think the Huskers would have a losing season.

How do you figure? We hadn't played a game yet with the new staff.

We haven't been blown out this year. We could get blown out by UCLA but nothing that has happened this season indicates that will happen.

The Miami game was a blowout for 3 quarters, and then they went brain dead, and let NU back in it.

Purdue was also a blowout, until NU put up some late points in the 4th quarter. It's a fallacy to say that NU wasn't blown out in any games this year.

Until is a pretty important word, eh? The Miami game went to OT. Anyone who says that game was a blow out is a moron.

The Miami game WAS a blowout. Penalties and Miami's undisciplined play let us back in the game. To say otherwise is just being delusional. I see that you are accepting that the Purdue game was a blowout.

  16.

I didn't realize MSU had a first year coach. No, we will probably never have 50-75% of a four year cycle in top 10 recruiting classes. Instead of continually rotating coaches, we need to be implementing a staff with a plan and mimicking what MSU is doing. Dantonio is in his 9th season at MSU. TO was the last coach we had that made it that long. Of the four playoff teams, all HCs have been at their respective programs at least eight years. With the exception of Solich, the coaches we let go needed to be let go. But, dang it at some time we need to pick a guy and stick with him.

At least we agree on it being a mistake that we fired Solich.

I disagree that NU's path to consistent success lies along the road that MSU has taken.

What exactly is our path to consistent success? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say having four different coaches in the past 15 years isn't the correct path. For various reasons, we will not be able to recruit top 10 or probably even top 15 recruiting classes year in and year out. There are several programs that will out recruit us year in and year out.

One of the reasons we were able to keep it rolling for so long under TO was because rarely did we lose someone from the staff. We need to pick a staff and stick with them.

100% agree that part of our winning ways were due to the same stable staff. Another was we ran a different style of offense where we were not competing against other schools for the best recruits. We did not need the best QB or receivers. No matter what though, you do need stars on both lines... What ever happened to the local pipeline of O-line talent?

  17.

On offense, two of our recent quarterbacks....Armstrong and Martinez....each turned the ball over too much.

I'm not a fan of Riley's offense. 40+ pass attempts per game is going to lend itself to interceptions.....not to mention the frustrations of incompletions on 3rd and short.

On defense, the Riley pass defense is not going to get many interceptions, so better hope it can cause a fumble or two. Pelini pass defenses could usually be counted on for some interceptions.

I think Pelini had the right idea with Martinez at quarterback.....it's just a shame he was so turnover prone.

Is that really any worse than a run getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on 3rd and short?
    Yes
    BS.
There are screams coming from virtually every direction.....fans and media......for Riley's offense to establish the running game, especially on short distance 3rd downs.
Why would you want to do the smart thing and run on 3rd or 4th and 1 when you can hurl a 30-40 yd fade route down the field instead?

I just watched Alabama convert a 4th and 2 with a roll out play action pass to the flats. Play calling wasn't the issue vs. Iowa. Tommy had Cethan Carter (TE) wide open on the play. Tommy's lack of vision and ability to check down prevented us from converting on that 4th down. He just made a terrible decision and everyone knows it.

A good offensive coordinator knows how to put an offense in position to succeed. I wonder if ANY play we needed a yard or two if Cross or Jano would have been a more viable option than ANY pass play?
Not with the offensive line we had.
That's because the coaches prefer pass protection. Jerald Foster is our best run blocking O-lineman, and he didn't sniff the field.
No, they prefer well rounded players that can do it all,not just run block. Foster will see the field next fall though.
They prefer guys who are better at pass blocking over run blocking. They also don't rotate because that's their philosophy from their NFL days, not because of any supposed lack of talent.
    Uncle Milt didn't rotate either.

    He subbed

not anymore than Cav. More players played because we won by bigger margins and the second, third and sometimes the forth string played.

What you are claiming is just flat out wrong. Go and watch some of the old big bowl games where the game was not yet decided. You will definitely see more rotation on the O-line than you do today.

  18. Because the talking point of the past few weeks has been "Bo is gone, let's move on.." (Yet inexplicably there are four threads where you can argue which Bo Pelini era player was your favorite), I thought we could all lay our bold, smoking hot, renewable energy takes on where we all see the Riley era taking us in the near to semi-far future.

    I'll go first!!!!

After the 2020 we will have seen:

    -zero 4+ loss seasons

    -2 11+ win seasons.

    -3 CCG's

    -1-2 conf championships

-1 season where there's playoff discussion.

I hope your eyes aren't flash burnt by those white hot takes.

-put your uv protection on and make your takes be strong.

Hahahahahahaha really? We have the potential to drop another for a total of 8 losses. How on earth do we NOT lose 4+ next year? I love your optimism. I predict 0 CCG, and 0 conf championships and 0 playoff discussion with this current staff. 11+ wins? Nope.

  19.

I'm currently blessed with living in the Bay Area. I've flown the aerial coverage for games at Levi's. It's a nice venue, but not very well protected from the elements. After sunset it's been pretty chili the last few weeks, although I suppose that is relative. The last 7 years here have made me soft. I'm supposing most fans will be local in nature, but if you are making the trip don't expect it to be very warm. I'm trying to make arrangements to go to my first bowl game! Although I'm not stoked about our record, this is a great chance for me to take my CA born son to a Husker game so I'm stoked. I'm doing my best to raise a new husker fan in California.

    how chili is chili?
Mid 40's to mid 50's after sunset, but it feels a lot colder due to the moisture in the air.

Edit: reading that back I hear my dad's voice in my head "Oh bite me! It's 19 degrees here!"

I had a friend who lived in the Bay Area and she said SF cold is a weird damp cold-you don't get warmed up for a long time.

Sounds a lot like Seattle. 40's there was colder than it is in Nebraska.

  20.

Riley will get 4 years minumium, the offense is trending up, the defense is trending up, penalties are trending down, recruiting is trending up, no blowout losses, competitive in all games. The future is really looking very good.

Purdue was a blowout, penalties and the O against Iowa were both awful

Penalties were ok that were penalities, The Offense was pretty damn good overall. 10 points was a blowout? What did you call all of those games under our former coach??? interesting!

Miami blew a 23 point lead against us. We were down to Purdue by 26 points at one point in the game. Let that sink in for a bit... Turnovers are way up FYI. I do like your optimism with this coaching staff though.
