  1. I know that I probably don't match the demographic of the majority of this forum, but I don't understand where everyone gets their taste from. Every time someone suggests a rap or hip-hop song for anything ranging from a tunnel walk to your own pre game grill out, music snobs come out of everywhere stating how awful the genre(s) is/are as if it's an innate fact. Then, I come on here, watch 1/3 of a video before turning it off for fear of my spine actually snapping because it was cringing that much, and everyone is giving this hunky-dory bull crap top marks.

  2.

For a guy who is so well respected around coaching and media circles, he knows NOBODY on the staff?

That struck me as odd, too. You'd think he'd have a pretty full Rolodex by now.

Yeah...I think he has been pretty isolated...but it still something that kind of bugs me a bit...

    1. Really well respected but might not know a lot of guys

    2. Might be bringing most/all of his old staff

    3. Offense is a hodgepodge/multiple

Not the end of the world but just things that kind of made me go "hmmmm"

He's been here a single day folks. Give him some time....he's got plenty of it.

Thats just it...he doesn't have plenty of time. He is starting recruiting today, he said...time is up.
Exactly. He doesn't have plenty of time, he needs to get to work yesterday.

I,agree with you about all of your concerns.

I was expecting him to win the press conference, but I wasn't impressed.

I said last night that this hire seemed very callahanesque, after hearing this press conference and everything about this guy, he seems more Doc Sadler to me.

Given the negativity you have had over this hire in general, your comments are not surprising.
It's funny that our previous staff got killed for having a Hodge podge offense with no identity, yet this guy gets a pass.

If he brings the majority of his staff from OSU, if his record is any indication of their ability, then we shouldn't expect much better than what we've had the past 15 years.

I think that those are real concerns.

I think what he was alluding to is changing the offense season to season to better fit the team; not necessarily having a ridiculous amount of formations and plays that they throw at defenses like a dart at a spinning board, aka, Beckfest.

  3. Reports are he and Frost are meeting this weekend, and Riley isn't bringing but 2-3 of his staff from OSU, including what many consider the BEST WR coach in college. I think the checkbook will be open for assistants. I am hoping he gets Frost, keeps Warren and Garrison, adds Oregeron. We will have some hellagood recruiters, and from what I've seen solid coaches/teachers as well.

    Link to these reports?

  4. I don't get the win at all costs stuff. This isn't the type of guy I really want to be associated with. Bo just didn't win (or even compete in) the games he needed to, but I'm proud that he went about it the right way. I guess I would rather win 9 doing it the right way than win more with some Hugh Freeze-type sleeze.

Before anyone puts you down, I want you to know I agree with you. The Callahan years were bad because of the losing, but they were awful because of the carelessness he had for the program, players and history. Bo was his own man, but he cared about these kids. He did things his way, but they were understandable. What's Brolema's excuse? He's just an areshole for no reason.

  5. Bielema's character another one of those few things you stand 100% by, saunders?

I'll admit, I'm not too familiar with the guy either.

But as I recall, you were never too fussed about Bo's sideline demeanor or leaked audio. So what's this about?

I'm not the person you were asking, but this guy gets under my skin. He whines about recruiting, especially when Meyer came to town; he runs up scores when able to, like throwing 80 yard touchdown passes when he's up 50 points; in a similar vein, going for 2 up 41-16; there was that time he said "I guess it's a good time to be a Badger fan" after the Penn State scandal broke; the time his wife tweeted "#karma" after Wisconsin got absolutely hosed by PAC refs; general douchey-ness.

  6. Forget about his personality for a second. This would be a great hire for a number of reasons.

    1. He's a damn good coach and he's proven that he can win in the Big Ten, and do it without elite recruits. He won 3 straight conference titles for a reason, beating Ohio State and their host of 5-stars on a routine basis.

    2. His style of play is a perfect fit. Can you imagine how many yards Abdullah would've rushed for behind his offensive lines? My god. That would be tremendous.

    3. Our woes against Wisconsin would almost surely end. We'd just be a better version of them.

    4. He's only 44. Could stay for a while.

Look, I'm not a fan of the man, personally, but if he wins games, and wins championships, that's really all I care about.

    1. I'm not doubting how good of a coach he is. I think he's very intelligent.

    2. My concern is, would Abdullah have even played? Bo and co. didn't have great recruiting classes but turned out good seasons. They found the diamonds in the rough. Abdullah is fantastic, one of the best, but a lot of his success is owed to the coaches who saw his potential.

    3. I don't like this superiority complex a lot of Nebraska fans have with Iowa and Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a great program now. Getting a better coach doesn't automatically put us in a tier above them.

    4. This is actually worse in my opinion. I don't want to stare his jiggly self on the sidelines.

  7. Gerry is a SAFETY!!!! Keep him there. He is playing great there, and let continue that success for another 2 1/2 years.

Right?! I can't believe people would want to move one of our best players out of position (where he makes plays) because we're lacking in another area.

  8.

I learned this team continues to improve. Michigan State may be on a higher level than us, but that's only because they started higher. We're getting there, and there's reason to believe we'll get to the top of this conference this year.

IF we stop losing guys to injury.

    #Excuses
Pretty legitimate actually. If you lose key players or at least a large number of players and expect to win a championship, you're delusional.

I think you missed the sarcasm.

I thought I might. Went into it 50/50. This board can say some ridiculous stuff sometimes. Other times it can be funny. In other words:

We do some good things, but we also did some things that weren't so good.

Are people really going to water over what a kicker says? :ohnoes

Are people really getting worked up over what was started by a 6th string true freshman DB who is likely to redshirt?

6th string? Damn talk about depth. So what is that the scout practice scout team?

I have no idea what "string" he is. He doesn't have one, because he's a true freshman not playing. That was my point. Yeah, he's probably on the scout team this year. No idea why he's running his mouth, but, he's the one who started this whole thing.

At this point I barely care but I can't find what he originally said that sparked all this.
  11.

Gerry exposes how bad our linebackers are nearly every play. I wish I could find the play, but there was a draw or a read that was going right into Bandos gap, with him waiting. Gerry literally came from 12 yards deep and filled the hole while Bando looked stunned, still waiting for the ball carrier to get to him. That's ridiculous, play downhill for crying out loud.

    Scary.

Sounds like he could possibly bite on the play action if he's filling the running lanes so quickly.

We'll find out, but if he's making his reads correctly, there isn't anything to worry about.

  12.

Obviously AA is great. But this stat also says a lot about our OLine:

Abdullah finds the correct running lane.

He has 83 rushes in which first contact was not made until 5 yards past the line of scrimmage, tied with Washington’s Bishop Sankey for the most by any Power Five player.

Wait a minute....if I read this board, all I read is that he is constantly dodging defenders in the back field and has to fight for everything he gets all on his own.

All of our offensive lines technical and schematic abilities doesn't mean anything unless our guys turn defensive tackles into literal pancakes.

(Jokes aside, there have been times I've yelled at Kondolo, Price, and Moudy from my couch for missed assignments, but that's much more rare than the great blocks I've seen Lewis and Cotton make)

But I thought our OLine was the worst thing to happen ever?

  14. Anyway, if you guys have any other questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them.

Predictions? What's one thing Miami has to step their game up in to win this game? From what you know of Nebraska, does our defense have the capabilities to limit Duke Johnson?

  15. 1. QB. Something's just missing. Armstrong is decent. Not saying he's done a bad job, as he's 10-1. However, he misses quite a few throws by a significant margin. I honestly wish that Ryker Fife would get some meaningful action. I think his throw is much more natural than Tommy's. Not hating on Tommy. Just saying that we should keep both options open. Of course, Bo will never do that as he believes in giving starters every minute possible. Tommy will never be a great passer. That's just how it's going to be. He doesn't have the touch needed to do so, but no way would I play Fyfe more. I like Tommy and think he can win a conference championship for us at QB, but we need to run the ball for him to be effective. I truly feel that Stanton is better than Fyfe.

2 RB. Ameer is Ameer, so no need for analysis. I was somewhat surprised that Newby looked very ordinary last night. Not sure what to think of that. This may sound crazy, but I'm not that overly impressed with Cross and Newby. I'm just glad that Adam Taylor will be back next year. When we have Abdullah we are good enough, but I'd like to see Cross take some of Newby's carries.

    3. O-line. I'm a little concerned about this unit. They're not bad, but I was expecting more by now. In fairness, if we keep throwing on every other down, then these guys are never going to develop consistency. If I were Bo, I would select one series in the first half and tell his offense, "On this drive, we are not going to throw a single pass." This would let the line settle into a rhythm. Would probably help develop some attitude, as well. Also, seems like Zach Sterup is a step down for us at tackle. It may be due to injury or not playing, but we weren't as good with him in. Also, seems like Pelini got used a few times last night at center. I think Cotton's penalties are overblown: that motion penalty against him in the first half was bunk: the Fresno player was completely in the neutral zone when Cotton flinched. Having said that, I haven't seen a whole lot of power out of our line. I want some aggression. Yes, we sprung a few big runs (which is great), but I'm more interested in consistency. I have been impressed with the pass blocking so far, but the run blocking hasn't been good. Plain and simple. I don't expect to pancake people all game but Fresno and Mcneese aren't good defenses.

    4. Wide receiver. Wow, Hovey made us a lot better in short order. With Hovey, Westerkamp, and Bell, we are suddenly a good unit. Moore has dropped too many balls. Kid has talent but needs to work on not using his body so much. I would like to see Allen get more looks. Overall, once we get Burtch and Reilly back this unit is even better. Westerkamp is a stud, of course.

    5. Tight end. Still hard to believe that Beck has used our tight ends as much as our fullbacks before last night. Nice to see them back. But, will they remain? Probably not. Beck seems to forget things that work. Don't hate Beck, just that he gets so caught up in trying to fool other teams that he forgets that simple plays can go for big gains. We have tried to throw at them more but Tommy seems to want to over throw them. Carter needs to be used as a true weapon going forward.

    6. D-line. Best part of entire team. Totally pleased. However, I felt like I was watching a China doll last night when Randy Gregory played. I kept feeling like he'd get injured at any moment. Agreed, this unit will only get better as the year goes along too. Scary that all 4 starters are 3 sophs and a Jr. Then if we get Moss back next season as well. LOOKOUT. I still think Randy is the best player in the nation. I look for his 14' coming out better next week vs MIA.

    7. Secondary. These guys have total attitude and are tough. If we could put half their attitude into the O-line, we'd be awesome. Attitude is great, but lets get a damn turnover.

    8. Linebackers. If I could use a food to describe them, it would be vanilla ice cream. No overt power or aggression from them, but no dumb plays. I knew losing Rose would be a big loss. Anderson hasn't stood out as much as I thought he would this year so far. Roach needs some more snaps along with Love.

    9. Special teams. Very solid all around last night. Kick coverages were GREAT. That bodes well for us. Rebecca DeMornay was fabulous on kick returns last night. Visions of a freshman Bobby Newcomb. #DPE Well, we scored on a punt. Enough said there.

    10. Coaching. I'm not wowwed by our coaching, but not upset. Not sure how to feel about this. I feel about the same at this point in the year. I'd like to use a few more blitzes besides the corner on D. Offense needs to sustain some drives.

I'd like some turnovers, too, and I think they'll come once our dline is going in full gear. A few fumbles by the QB or a rushed throw are usually the most common cause for turnovers. That being said, I don't think Nebraska forces a whole lot. Gerry and Cooper are both downhill players, interceptions aren't at the forefront of their minds. Also, with us playing man so much, I don't see Josh Mitchell being able to steal any "up-in-the-air" passes. He's a great corner, just small. Slightly worrisome, but in my opinion, this is the best I've seen the secondary play in a while. The only guy I had gripes with (in the secondary) was Kalu. Guy is super aggressive and doesn't whiff, but he's lost on D right now. He's only a freshman with time to develop, but right now he reminds me of Courtney Osborne.

  16. Second half we seemed more sharp. Dont know if it was execution or frasno just starting to pack it in. But in the first half, if you took away the two long touchdowns we only had 130 yards. Thats not to impresive.

"If you take away the good things, there bad things."

  17. I think it would be better this way because of the timing. Sure, it would have been nice to put McNeese away with ease, but I would say, with Miami upcoming, the energy the Huskers get coming off a good win is more important. Not to mention, in my opinion Fresno would have their hands full with McNeese.

  18. Honestly, this is all great to hear. In the game thread I saw a few people saying "TAKE HIM OUT" and things of that nature. I'm happy to see people recognize he's not really apart of our offensive struggles.

  19. I don't post often on hear but I noticed something that bothered me. I didn't get to watch most of the game (it was the lady's birthday) so I only got bits and pieces of what my friend was messaging. He told me about Cotton's penalties and it was confirmed (overwhelmingly) by the folks on this board. I decided this morning with my free time to finally sit and watch the game. I gotta say, besides the penalties, Cotton played better than any other lineman.

He absolutely mauls linebackers in space. He and Lewis form a wall on pass protection. He's definately the best pulling lineman we have, and you could make an argument that he's the best overall lineman we have.

I'm only mentioning this because he was getting A LOT of hate on here. He was screwing up badly at the end, but without him, we might not have been in that position anyways.
