Its easy to say things like this when you win but I will definately be rooting for UDub the rest of the season- espeicially against USC!

Locker had a terrible day but we also knew we have potentially the best secondary in the country. This game put a serious dent in his Heisman chances but the guy is a player- he'll recover and learn from this.

Gotta say, i love the Huskies coaches. its going to be a tough road but i think they'll have the program back in the top 25 eventually.

I agree with you. The CU Rivalry was based off the, wanting too be as good as us. Iowa has been plenty good before us and at the same time. But doesn't have as many shinny trophies too show for it.

First of all, I agree with you and understand what you mean about being good "at the same time". but I thought it was only fair to point out that, historically speaking, CU ranks just a little higher on the all time wins chart than Iowa.

As the op i must interject my opinion. 1st off Caven is good people, and so is manhattan. Let me bring you guys up to speed. One thing i noticed about MOST about the big 10 is that they are respectfull. Hell after having what a 120 year marrage you need to learn to get along some time. Here is my theory on why we hat them. Its because they hate us. You think thats a joke. This is going to sound so arrogant i cant believe im spewing it out of my mouth. Its because we beat them. We beat them bad and we beat them often. Weve been beating 6 of them for a long time. So when they beat us they make such a HUGE deal about it they becoming annoying. In turn i supose we deserve it. Its easy to be cordual when you just handed Iowa State a 77-14 defeat. But when they beat you 9-7 they tend to go alittle overboard. Thats where that comes from.

an example of team's "going overboard" when beating Nebraska: CU in 2001? a great, huge win for them to be sure! they went on to win the Big 12 championship, got their deserved rings but what did they put on them? the score vs Nebraska.

IMO THAT is a perfect microcosm of how our "little" brothers in the Big 8 saw Nebraska in the 80s and 90s. To them, beating Nebraska was what winning national titles were to us.

On the flip side, who is the team that we didn't consistantly beat in all those years? Oklahoma.

obviously they didn't treat a win over Nebraska like they'd just won the MNC or something- although ironically the winner of that game truly did have a better shot at he real thing.

That's a long way to travel knowing your team likely won't win. Wouldn't mind inviting Idaho back to Memorial Stadium on a future schedule. This is the Idaho team I can root for.

Washington is also not as good as they were in '97 or '92. Not saying they're bad, they just aren't as good as those teams.

Still, I think there will be more enthusiasm going into this game. The team SHOULD NEVER take "lesser" teams like WKU/Idaho lightly, but I think that tends to happen even when you try to guard against it. UDub will have their full attention, especially being the first road game.

He has talked quite a bit about the Huskers from time to time, mostly positive but cautious regarding the offense.

I haven't been able to listen to Leech and Jack Arute on CFB Playbook but from the little i have been able to catch, this show sounds like it will be fun! Everyone knows Leech is worth a good sound byte or a hundred. He offers really interesting insight and is pretty blunt/honest, as one would expect.

I caught the end of him talking about Nebraska the other day but I didn't realize it was Leech until later. He had very good things to say about the fans, Pelini, etc. I've tried to find an online replay of the show but no luck.

I dont think it will get to be as bad as cu trust me i am frome colorado and have been to boulder and the fans are nuts. My cuz was down there for a game one time and they had their husker gear on and people were spitting on them and throwing boddles at them mind u they were walking down main street before the game. i am looking forward to the big ten, Iowa will be a great game no matter if the hawkeyes drop off and i dont see that happening with there coach there.

Used to go the the CU game every year it was in Boulder. The only problems we ever really had prior to the games was with the younger kids yelling vulgarities, etc. Though I've seen much worse from other teams' fans on YouTube. Walking down "main street" i never saw anything worse than some smart ass comments but usually meant in friendly bantor. Spent plenty of time at the beer garden and never had any problems there-- and the alcohol was flowing-a-plenty. Usually there were also plenty of tailgaters with a mix of red with black/gold together.

Inside the stadium was a different story unfortunately, especially in the late'90s/2000s-- the usual crap you hear about. We've had things thrown at us. Had some young kids sitting with us in 2005 who were treated pretty bad. "adults" talking smack to a 12-yr old girl. that's some Buff pride, i guess.

I hope Iowa fans have more respect for their program than to act like CU.

Oh, fans as bad as CU? At CU many of the problem fans were students. I don't think the students in Iowa City have quite the same mindset as those in Boulder.

 

Then again, I'm not there in person like you. I just hope it doesn't get as bad as the CU/NU relationship.

I can't help but wonder if Iowa vs Nebraska will be something like NU/CU. There is a little history wtih Iowa but it does seem a little forced like CU. There was history with CU as well, that doesn't mean we ever warmed up to that "rivalry".

Randomly thinking of negative and postive comparisons between Iowa & CU...

Negative: As a Husker fan who lived in Colorado for most of my life, most people in Colorado don't care enough about CU so day to day as a Husker fan wasn't too difficult. I would venture to guess that there are far more Iowans that care about the Hawkeyes than Coloradoans care about the Buffs. more passion is good for a fan base but at the same time, a Husker fan in Iowa may actually have a tougher time than a Husker in CO.

Positive: I just can't see Ferentz mounting a Nebraska-is-the-devil red-letter-game campaign like good ol' Bill McCartney did. The Iowa football program is certainly above that.

Negative: For the few fans CU does have there is a severe infiority complex when it comes to NU. 1/2 national title vs 5 will do that i guess. I don't know too many Iowa fans but I hope that kind of thing doesn't reer is ugly head since Iowa apparenly has only one title in 1958.

I predict this will be a HUGE rivalry.... for those fans living in Iowa and Nebraska. The rest of the national Huskers will see Iowa as another tough Big 10 opponent.

Now Penn State on the other hand... that won't take much to truly earn the meaning of the word "rivalry"!

I'm going to *guess*, and that's all this is, Herbie may have dropped us b/c of the QB situation. and if that's the case, its fair IMO. At least at the very start of the season when polls change the most.

We went from having a veteran returning at QB, always an apparent plus... to having a startless freshman.

Now obviously TMart is equal to or better than Lee according to the coachs, but when so little is known this early in the season a veteran QB > Freshman.

Let's go back to our last national championship team in 1997. It was the second game of the year AT HOME, and we were down 17 - 14 at the half to Central Florida. (We won 38 - 24.)

 

The point is that you can have a national championship team, and while you might expect them to come out firing on all cylinders each and every game, you'll often be disappointed with the reality of the situation. 18 to 21 year-old kids, regardless of their talent level, are subject to emotional ups and downs that affect their play. These aren't NFL professionals.

 

I'd venture a guess that you can pick any championship team's season and you'll find games in which you would think that they should have performed a lot better than what they did.

I thought about that UCF game as well. Culpepper played great that day and I think it put him on the national radar against a good Blackshirt squad. Even on offense, the home crowd tried to boo Scott Frost off the field.

I would also point to Pacific in 1995. It was a 49-7 win but despite the score the reaction to the game was "what went wrong?". they knew they only had to show up and they seemed to lacked intensity in that game.

Its not an excuse. It happens even to the best teams but it Shouldn't. I'm confident they will hear about it from the coaches and it won't happen again.

Maybe best for another topic but this brings up a general issue. I guess I don't mind playing 1 crap team in the "preseason" as a way to work out some kinks but this year is just bad. three low end teams (no disrespect to Idaho)?

I know Nebraska can schedule anyone and have the fans show up no matter what, but Pederson took creampuffing to a new (KSU-like) level with the 2008-10 schedules.

How do you prevent a lack of intensity when most of their early games are like that? Hopefully Idaho isn't a trap game.

It makes it harder to "FINISH" when you might lose interest by halftime each week.

I figured it was a national show, 5 minute interview but it was the Nebraska Sports Network coaches show-- in full from what i could tell. They even played the local commercials so I got to hear about increasing yields and soy beans, too.

I love the retro Herbie logo! I still have a hat (from when it wasn't "retro") but have been looking for a shirt with the ol' logo. I guess they must be popular b/c everytime I come across one I want, its only available in S or XL+

It killed me when Peddy beefed up Herbie. This is the Herbie I grew up knowing and loving.

If we're talking about the outfits and not the actual logo:

1990s Herbie looked MUCH better with the "94" or "95" football uni on but this was the only picture I could find. I always think of this one celebrating with Dwayne Harris after the safety in the '94 Orange Bowl. And for the record, he was pretty "beefed up", too.

Then they ($Bill Byrne?) replaced it with this.

If you are going to keep the same concept, why change it at all? He lost the beefed up arms and looked like a lypo-suction Herbie-- he lost weight but still had his fat clothes. Not to mention the expression went from I'm-going-to-kick-your-ass-and-enjoy-it to a clown. Which oddly enough fits what happened to the team in 2002 but that's another story.

I would love the '90s Herbie but if you don't like the current dark-haried outfit, keep in mind we still have this guy in the stands:

Choice for Nebraska:

A program in a state with a population of less than 2M being left to the whims of others and possibly ending up in a conference with KSU, ISU, Kansas and Baylor-- after the Texas Six (Pac 10) and Missouri (Big 10) leave.

Or

Force our own destiny and head to the Big Ten and all that it brings. etc, etc, etc.

If the above translates to it being "about money", then i guess, damn straight was about money. Moving to a mansion vs being left at the doorstep of a homeless shelter? Yeah, I guess a choice like that does involve money.

Its incredibly simple minded to think the choice was just money vs more money. If that was really, truly all this was based on then frankly it wouldn't have been worth it to Nebraska or the Big 10 to make the move.

And that isn't even touching on the important issue of how much better we fit culturally amongst our new partners.

Simple mindedness at play here. As others have said, he's just pissed because NW has been shoved down yet another rung on the conference totum poll.

Even more, Solich was not intended to be hired in the first place. Bill Byrne was never going to hire Solich and was looking at other coaches, namely Bob Stoops and Mack Brown. But that's an another story in itself.

Assuming the "story in itself" were true. Neither Stoops or Brown make very good Nebraska coaches IMO. At NU, Mack absolutely does not get the superior talent he has at his finger tips in Texas. I will give him credit for managing that talent (which isn't always easy), but at Nebraska I don't think he wins without the fertile recruiting ground.

Same with Stoops, I don't know that he would have done well here either. He did a great job saving the sinking ship that was OU at the time and did it with Blake's recruits. Nebraska wasn't nearly as stocked in 2003/04 as OU was when Stoops came aboard.

I don't know who would have been a good coach to continue after Osborne. but anyway we seem to have found our guy now. Whatever trials we had to go through to get to this point.

Intersting you would bring that up, i hadn't heard that before.

It reminds of things that were said about Solich with recruiting. I remember reading an article from the Denver Post about a prominant CU player (I'm sorry I forget who) who wanted to go to the Huskers but said Solich didn't even know his name and there was this attitude like "We're big bad Nebraska, who are you again?"

Martin Rucker said similar things, as Mike's brother that guy should have been an easy recruit. Instead he helped Missouri kick our ass a couple times.

The only reason Solich had 9 wins in his last year was because of Bo's defense. I don't know about you guys, but I remember seeing a crappy offense being propped up by a good defense.

 

I think firing Solich was probably the right move, but hiring Callahan was the worst decision ever.

In retrospect Callahan was obviously not the right hire. but we could have done MUCH worse considering how many people were saying thanks but no thanks to SP.

SP had gotten desperate enough to go after Houston Nutt! Complain about BC not knowin the "Nebraska Way" all you want but Nutt would have been our RichRod, NCAA sanctions and all.

We have had some low points to humble us the last few years but just the rumors that Nebraska was looking at Nutt... at the time Callahan seemed like a lucky break compared to that douche.

I'll admit, I don't usually watch whatever network he's usually on (ESPN?) but he showed up on one of my local (AZ) stations tonight for an hour long college sports preseason show after the regular nightly news.

 

They started discussing conference expansion and he went on to state that Nebraska left just because we "couldn't be the Big Dawg anymore" and the last second loss to Texas in the conference championship was the straw that broke the camel's back..or something to that effect.

 

Has he been spouting this drivel nationally?

You mean every sports writer outside of Nebraska but still inside Big 12 territories? because most of the national media and the local types outside of that region certainly haven't been putting it that way. at least not from what I've come across. Let Kansas/Oklahoma/Texas/Missouri choose whatever version makes them happy.

I know "the media hates us" has been a mantra of ours but that apparent Husker hating non-Big 12 media has been putting the Huskers in the top 10 and in national title talk. That's higher than many Husker fans have been willing to put the team without getting slapped with a few of these:

I didn't know he was hurt so much last fall. I hope he stay's healthy so he can back too work and maybe raise his draft stock a bit.

I remember watching him play in a Colorado HS basketball championship game on Altitude TV after he'd committed to us. Looked like a man among boys on the court and just a mean, Ugly SOB. I've loved him ever since!

We have a knack for putting DLinemen in the NFL-- Pierre will certainly be among them eventually.

I'm not a fan of the move, but if they have enough of the Big Ten AD's agreeing with it, then I'd consider that it can't be too bad of a plan, whatever they have in mind.

A team is something you get passionate about. A favorite team chooses you more than you choose a team, right? Watch some videos from all the team's you're down to and see if any of them really grab you.

Maybe even wait and watch whatever games you can this season and see if any of them really take hold.

Obviously I'd love for you to pick the Huskers(!) but this is not a decision to be forced!

Sure Ahman Green played when we had LP, but there were not 3 others including LP in front of AG. Keep his shirt for the time being. If we need him, play him. If not I would hate to see him waste a year to play a couple snaps against WKU and Idaho.

Actually LP, Clinton Childs, and Damon Benning were all ahead of Green. Green did get some PT early in the season during blowouts, which was fortunate because LP got suspended and then first Childs and then Benning were injured.

 

That being said, Chase Rome is in a different position. I'd like to see him redshirt unless he's ubergood or injuries happen.

Jay Sims wasn't too shabby either. '95 had a whole stable of RBs and iirc, after LP was gone, all the backs that year were from Omaha.

As for Rome, I think good arguments can be made for both sides. I'm going to take the easy way on the argument and just say that I trust the coaches, whatever decision they make.

Then in 4 or 5 years we can all look back and 2nd guess it with our 20/20 hindsight.

I'm assuming Bo thinks the kid can keep clean or he wouldn't waste his time. We're not exactly stacked at TE but we're also not so desperate that we'd take someone who could potentially be a bad influence on the team.

He may have wore out his welcome with UW and good for them for kicking him off the team for violating rules. he has a 2nd chance in a new place and hopefully he'll make the most of it as he will no doubt be on a very short leash.

A small part of me wonders if he came here just to be able to stick it to Washington next year.

I really hope that's not his motivation. I'm an outsider making a lot of assumptions about his situation but if it was something as straight forward as failing a drug test for MJ, then that is his fault. not any mistreatment from UW that deserves some kind of payback. if that is the case he would need to realize his own mistakes instead of blaming others or he won't last long with Bo either.

As for on the field. I'm really excited about his size in the videos, especially considering what Wats was able to do with TE's at CU. although its nice that he was 4* 5* in HS, that doesn't mean a whole lot now. Can he keep clean? can he learn the offense? Can he contribute? Lets see what he can do in the Big 10 in '11!

Just curious, how many of those guys in 1994 were still in the NFL a decade later? I believe we had four, Collins, Brady, Engram, and an O-lineman for Pittsburgh whose name escapes me.

Wiegert, Schlesinger and Minter for sure. Williams, Stai, Colman and Graham played for years, probably not 10 years. Erstad, oops, wrong sport. What's that really got to do with college football? Ask anybody, ANYBODY who knows college football, who was the better college QB, Frazier or Collins, and they will all say Frazier. Everyone knew that Frazier wasn't even the best chance for an NFL QB on the team. Who knows, Berringer might have been our 4th to go 10 years in the NFL.

I'm sorry but when comparing teams, IMO the NFL excuse is an admittance that the argument has been lost when you have to go that far off base. Miami 2001 people LOVE this argument, which is why i'm sick of it. Where do I begin?

How many NFL teams had a comparable offense to what Nebraska was running in the '90s? We had WR's that were great for the type of offense NU ran but certainly would never have fit in anywhere in an NFL offense.

According to this argument, a player like Tommie Frazier has ZERO value. That alone shows what a fallacy it is.

Husker offensive lineman Aaron Taylor's size didn't fit in the NFL and he wasn't drafted until the 7th round and didn't make it in the league. According to the NFL argument, Taylor being good enough to win the Outland Trophy doesn't mean jack.

Miami in 1994 had some guys that turned out to be decent NFLers: you know like Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis.

In 2005 Nebraska had 3 defensive players drafted in the top 40 picks. But that doesn't change the fact that sucked in 2004.

It also doesn't account for vital factors like coaches. An NFL argument means guys like Paterno and Osborne are given equal weight (ie none) as a guy like Larry Coker.

Shady? I must have missed that one. or are we editing history now? He had a rep as one of the best recruiters in the country but I don't remember anyone, for or against Nebraska, accusing Blake of being "shady".

I do recall allegations from Sooner fans of his destroying recruiting info in anger after he was fired. but that has nothing to do with what he's being accused of at UNC.

Because Tom Osborne retired. and no one could run that offense the way he did.
